<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>In October 2011, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton went to <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2011/10/live-bill-clintons-decade-of-difference-party-at-hollywood-bowl.html">a party at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California, for her husband's 65th birthday</a>.</p><p>She came prepared with "talking points" for the star-studded bash that were written by her chief of staff, Cheryl Mills. </p><p>Mills provided Clinton with a bullet-pointed memo that suggested what he should say if she met talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.</p><p>"Should you see her and end up in conversation, it would be ideal for you to share the following points," Mills wrote to Clinton. </p><p>Mills said she spoke with DeGeneres' manager about a plan the State Department's Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator came up with to have the host promote HIV and AIDS awareness. She provided Clinton with a memo titled, "Talking Points for Secretary Clinton: Hollywood Bowl Party and Ellen DeGeneres." </p><p>"Spoke with Ellen DeGeneres' manager, David McGuire, today about Ellen serving as a Special Envoy for Global HIV/AID Awareness," Mills wrote. "OGAC is developing a concept paper for consideration, but David agreed that there will be some sort of arrangement for Ellen to ' promote both your speech and World AIDS Day through social media or perhaps you phoning into her show at some point."  </p><p>The message was sent by Mills on October 14, 2011, the day before the party, which was also a charity benefit for the Clinton family foundation. It was included in <a href="https://foia.state.gov/Search/Results.aspx?collection=Clinton_Email_September_Release">the new batch of emails from Clinton's private server</a> that were released by the State Department on Wednesday.</p><p>Mills sent three "talking points" for Clinton to use if she met DeGeneres:</p><ul><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"I'm very excited about the possibility of your using your incredible platform to help us raise awareness about eliminating HIV/AIDS."</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"I'm giving a speech in two weeks where I'm going to call upon the world to join the U.S. in creating an AIDS Free Generation."</span></li><li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Thanks to the science, we are truly on the cusp of making this happen. And if you could help us raise awareness about this historic opportunity, it would be terrific." </span></li></ul><p>After the party, Clinton responded to Mills and said she spoke with DeGeneres.</p><p>"She said she would do whatever we asked and so full speed ahead!" Hillary Clinton had 'talking points' prepared in case she ran into Ellen DeGeneres at a Hollywood party

<p class="source"><span>NBC</span></p><p class="caption">Charlie Sheen on the "Today" show.</p>They're calling it the "Sheen Effect."<p>The week actor Charlie Sheen went on NBC's "Today" show Tuesday to confirm rumors that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/charlie-sheen-confirms-hes-hiv-positive-on-today-show-2015-11">he was HIV-positive</a>, sales of at-home test kits for the virus rose 95%.</p><p>That's according to <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11121-017-0792-2">a new study</a> from researchers at the University of Southern California and San Diego State University, which also found that the kits continued to sell at higher rates than expected for a month after the announcement.</p><p>While they can't say for sure that Sheen's disclosure <em>caused</em> the rise in sales of the test kits, the bump they observed was record-setting.</p><p>"In total, there were 8,225 more sales than expected around Sheen's disclosure, surpassing World AIDS Day by a factor of about 7," the researchers <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs11121-017-0792-2">write in their paper</a>.</p><p>In November 2015, Sheen appeared on NBC's "Today" show to disclose his positive status.</p><p>"I'm here to admit that I am HIV-positive," he said.</p><p>Sheen's physician, UCLA assistant professor of clinical medicine Robert Huizenga, also appeared on the show at the time, generating some confusion when he said that Sheen's HIV was "undetectable" in his blood - a proclamation that led some to believe the actor had been "cured." In reality, Sheen's HIV had simply been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/charlie-sheen-has-hiv-not-aids-2015-11">reduced to an undetectable level</a> thanks to treatment with a powerful three-drug cocktail known as antiretroviral therapy (ART).</p><p>As far as current reports are concerned, Sheen does not have AIDS, a condition that can develop when the HIV virus has dramatically suppressed the immune system to the point where someone is highly susceptible to infections and rare types of cancer.</p><p>Sheen maintained at the time that he told all of his partners of his HIV status, adding that many threatened to blackmail him for a sum totaling "into the millions."</p><p>The actor said in 2015 he learned he had HIV in 2011 after suffering from extreme migraines and "sweating the bed." Thinking he might have a brain tumor, he was hospitalized. But after numerous tests, doctors confirmed he had HIV. One of the reasons HIV can go long periods before being diagnosed is that its <a href="https://www.aids.gov/hiv-aids-basics/hiv-aids-101/signs-and-symptoms/">earliest symptoms</a> can mirror those of the flu - many people experience a fever, muscle aches, sore throat, and swollen glands.</p><p>The only way to know for sure whether you have HIV is to <a href="https://locator.aids.gov/">get tested</a>.</p><p>While there are plenty of <a href="https://locator.aids.gov/">places to get tested for free</a>, fear, stigma, and other socioeconomic barriers can prevent many from doing so. Today, one in eight of the 1.2 million Americans living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/statistics/overview/ataglance.html">does not know</a> they are positive.</p><p>For their study, the researchers analyzed two years of sales data for HIV test kit <a href="http://www.oraquick.com/">OraQuick</a>, the only fast-acting at-home kit available in the US. They then compared those sales data against data from the same time period in years before and after.</p><p>What they found was astounding: Not only had sales increased 95% the week of Sheen's disclosure, they also stayed relatively high for the four following weeks.</p><p>It's well-known that celebrities influence our behavior. Yet when it comes to health, it's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-gwyneth-paltrow-eats-every-day-2016-3">often not for the better</a>. <p>Apple will likely get a huge influx of shoppers to its stores and online if previous years' Black Friday events are any guide.</p>
<p>Some seem to think the UK will get price reductions rather than gift cards. <a href="http://www.whathifi.com/news/apple-black-friday-uk-deals-2014#">This website claims </a>discounts are expected on iPads, iPods, MacBooks, and accessories.</p>
<p>Apple has already announced its US deals (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-black-friday-deals-are-here-2014-11">see them all here</a>), which see purchases rewarded with gift cards. If you buy an iPhone, for example, you'll get a $50 voucher. But the company hasn't yet released its UK bargains.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/best-black-friday-2014-apple-deals-and-amazon-sales-online-150537965.html">Yahoo Finance also believes</a> Apple might bring actual prices down, and also notes iTunes online gift cards, worth more than £25 and <a href="https://www.giftcloud.com/uk">bought from Giftcloud</a>, will be reduced from November 28 until December 1. But everything else is purely speculation; nothing is confirmed. The only certainty at this stage is Apple's <a href="http://www.apple.com/uk/">work with World AIDS Day</a>. </span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/iphone/black-friday-2014-uk-apple-deals-amazon-deals-tech-live-blog-3490877/">As Macworld points out</a>, last year Apple offered savings of £31 on the iPad Air, while £15 was taken off the iPad Mini price. MacBook Pro models were cheaper by £81, and iPods were also discounted. </p>

<p>The Black Friday shopping phenomenon arrived in the UK in 2010, when <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/money/2010/nov/22/amazon-attempts-black-friday-discounts-uk">Amazon first promoted Black Friday discounts </a>to shoppers. Black Friday in the US is the day after Thanksgiving, a day that almost all Americans have off from work - and many use it to begin their Christmas shopping.</p>
<p>Black Friday is essentially meaningless in the UK, except that American retailers have figured out that it is a good time to officially get the British Christmas shopping season started. Here Is Where Apple's Black Friday Deals Will Be In The UK

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>The Washington Post, via Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Larry Speakes.</p></div><p></p></div></div>December 1 is World AIDS Day, as proclaimed by President Barack Obama.</p><p>"Together, we can forge a future in which no person - here in America or anywhere in our world - knows the pain or stigma caused by HIV/AIDS," Obama said in his proclamation letter.</p><p>In 2013, Obama announced $100 million in re-prioritized funding over the next three years to launch a new HIV Cure Initiative, along with up to $5 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.</p><p>Along with President George W. Bush, who established the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief in 2003, the efforts of the past two US presidents mark a stunningly quick evolution on the disease.</p><p>To see how fast US policy has evolved on the issue, just go back to October 1982, which appears to be the first time AIDS was mentioned in a White House press briefing. White House reporters, and Reagan administration press secretary Larry Speakes, <a href="http://www.worldcat.org/wcpa/servlet/DCARead?standardNo=0393050270&amp;standardNoType=1&amp;excerpt=true" target="_blank">laughed off the CDC's own announcement</a> that there were more than 600 reported cases of AIDS in the US.</p><p>Here's <a href="http://channingkennedy.com/post/68730638203/october-15-1982-white-house-press-briefing" target="_blank">the transcript</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Q: Larry, does the President have any reaction to the announcement - the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, that AIDS is now an epidemic and have over 600 cases?<br />MR. SPEAKES: What's AIDS?<br />Q: Over a third of them have died. It's known as "gay plague." (Laughter.) No, it is. I mean it's a pretty serious thing that one in every three people that get this have died. And I wondered if the President is aware of it?<br />MR. SPEAKES: I don't have it. Do you? (Laughter.)<br />Q: No, I don't.<br />MR. SPEAKES: You didn't answer my question.<br />Q: Well, I just wondered, does the President-<br />MR. SPEAKES: How do you know? (Laughter.)<br />Q: In other words, the White House looks on this as a great joke?<br />MR. SPEAKES: No, I don't know anything about it, Lester.<br />Q: Does the President, does anybody in the White House know about this epidemic, Larry?<br />MR. SPEAKES: I don't think so. SPEAKES: I hope so.<br />Q: It's too late.</p><p>About a month earlier, the CDC had used the term "AIDS" <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00001163.htm" target="_blank">for the first time</a>. Less than a year later, in May 1983, Congress passed the first bill that contained funding targeted for AIDS research and treatment - $12 million in funding was allotted to agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services.</p>

<p><strong>5. <a href="http://digiday.com/publishers/gamergates-new-approach-attack-gawkers-ad-tech/">GamerGate supporters are now trying to hurt tech website Gawker's ad revenue by approaching the ad tech companies it uses, according to Digiday.</a></strong> A GamerGate subreddit contains a lengthy tutorial, urging supports to petition Gawker's ad tech partners including Criteo and Datalogix to stop working with the website. Gawker became a primary target of GamerGate's boycott last month <a href="http://digiday.com/brands/gamergate-experiences-mixed-success/">after one of its writers, Sam Biddle,  tweeted</a> that GamerGate "nerds" deserve to be "constantly shamed and degraded into submission."</p>

<p>Its stores were some of the more dangerous during the Black Friday melee, but buying from the retailer online is probably okay. </p>
<p>Tesco has got a Samsung Galaxy Note, 8", 16GB, white, for £149. Overall its got up to £20 off technology and electrical, with an eCoupon service specifically for Cyber Monday. </p>

<p>The automotive company has a "web exclusive" reel of deals for December 1. Deals include various models of satnavs, such as the Garmin Nuvi or TomTom Go, for £69.99 and £99.99 respectively. </p>
<p>It's also got plenty of other tech devices reduced, including bluetooth headsets and car stereos. </p>

<p>Much like Black Friday, Cyber Monday is big at the computer giant. It's black tag event is still going online and some of the prices are pretty epic. There's a Dolce Gusto coffee machine for £29 (Was £99.99), and a 42" LG Smart LED TV reduced to £279. </p>

<p>Weirdly, Cyber Monday is part of M&amp;S' "4 Magical Days" offers, where more than 6,000 deals offer for up to 30% off. There's not a huge amount of tech, but there are a few things to check out. </p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Kenneth Cole, an American fashion designer known for shoes and accessories, recently posted a billboard on gun control and mental illness that rubbed the American Psychiatric Association <a href="http://psychiatry.org/news-room/apa-blogs/apa-blog/2015/09/kenneth-cole-billboard-fuels-harmful-stigma">the wrong way</a>.</span></p><p>The billboard reads "Over 40M Americans suffer from mental illness. Some can access care… All can access guns." It's signed by Kenneth Cole and features the hashtags #gunreform and #areyouputtinguson. It is prominently displayed over Manhattan's West Side Highway.</p><p>It's not clear why Cole decided to weigh in on gun violence now, though the billboard did come shortly after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hillary-clinton-virginia-shooting-gun-control-2015-8">two TV journalists were gunned down on air</a>. Regardless of what prompted Cole's billboard, the APA is upset at his apparent suggestion that the mentally ill are to blame for gun violence in America.&#xa0;</p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Renee Binder, president of the APA, says in a statement that linking the mentally ill to gun violence "is a disappointing misrepresentation of the facts and only serves to further stigmatize those suffering from mental illness."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The vast majority of mentally ill people are not violent. <strong>Most violent acts are committed by people who are not mentally ill</strong>," she added. "In fact, people with mental illness are more than twice as likely to be the victims of violence as the general public. The numbers simply do not bear out what Mr. Cole is implying on his billboard."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div></div></span></p><p>There is some research that backs up Binder's assertion that mental illness isn't behind most violent acts.</p><p>Jeffrey Swanson, a medical sociologist and Duke University professor, analyzed 10,000 people (both mentally ill and not) and&#xa0;surveyed them on violent acts they encountered over a year,&#xa0;as&#xa0;Maria Konnikova explains in&#xa0;<a href="http://www.newyorker.com/science/maria-konnikova/almost-link-mental-health-gun-violence">The New Yorker</a>. Violence could have included minor incidents like shoving or more serious ones like armed robbery.</p><p>His study found mental illness could explain only 4% of the incidents of violence, and that violence was more closely associated with being male, low-income, or an abuser of alcohol or drugs than it was with being mentally ill. Cole's apparent attempt to link mental illness and violence has spurred a lot of tweets opposing the billboard, like this one:&#xa0;</p><p>Still, Konnikova did acknowledge in her New Yorker article that mentally ill people do pose a violent risk to <em>themselves.</em>&#xa0;Perhaps for this reason, the Global Mental Health Program (GMHP) at Columbia University <a href="http://www.cugmhp.org/kenneth-cole-ad-campaign/">actually praised Cole's billboard</a>&#xa0;and his "mission-driven advertising."</p><p><span>"His company, which is known for&#xa0;featuring advertisements centered on a poignant or memorable quote, has a new advertisement that takes aim at the fact that Americans today have greater accessibility to guns than to vital, often life-saving, mental health services," GMHP noted.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>More from the GMHP:&#xa0;</span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>In the absence of universal access to these services, there is increased concern that some of the individuals suffering from the most serious forms of psychopathology, whom may be at greater risk of harming themselves or others, may go undiagnosed and untreated. &#xa0;At the same time, these same individuals face relatively few obstacles when it comes to obtaining a firearm. &#xa0;</span></span></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>In rare cases, these compounding factors have contributed to the spate of high-profile shootings that have claimed numerous lives at schools, movie theaters, and other public spaces across the country. What is far more common - but far less likely to make headline news - is when an individual struggling with an illness such as Depression or Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) uses a firearm to take their own life.</span></span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Cole has long supported various social causes, and it's not the first time that his message has rubbed some people the wrong way.&#xa0;In 2005 he launched a campaign for World AIDS Day, designing T-shirts that said "We All Have AIDS" and "I Have AIDS," likening them to the Stars of David Jews had to wear in WWII. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"There is a legend of the Danish king, Christian X, who, during World War II, when Hitler insisted all Jews publicly wear a yellow Star of David, would wear the star himself, hence making it difficult to differentiate who was Jewish. This is kind of like that, hopefully," </span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/01/fashion/thursdaystyles/from-kenneth-cole-a-new-solidarity.html">he said</a>, according to The New York Times.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">He also got significant backlash for a tweet about Syria, when America was debating its engagement in the Syrian civil war in 2013. Kenneth Cole's latest 'mission-driven' ad about guns has some people enraged

While the product hasn’t hit the market yet, Pee Safe has smartly started building a voice on social media. <br /><br />In its first-ever social media post after the launch announcement, Pee Safe’s Domina took a dig at its rival Durex.
