Sharing salary information is considered taboo in India, and 61 per cent of professionals are more comfortable sharing their pay details with family members rather than with co-workers or friends, a LinkedIn report said on Thursday. Just one in 10 professionals said they would discuss their salaries with coworkers they trust (13 per cent) and peers they trust in other companies (9 per cent). According to LinkedIn's <keyword id="9245189" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Workforce-Confidence-Index" source="Orion">Workforce Confidence Index</keyword>, India's overall workforce confidence has dwindled slightly. "This is due to a volatile perception towards jobs, finances, and career progress in these times of global uncertainty," said the report. Despite a dip in overall confidence, India's workforce remains optimistic about navigating these challenges as seven in 10 professionals say they are confident about reaching the next level in their field, their work experience and education and chances of their income increasing. "Professionals are still not comfortable to have conversations about pay in the workplace," said Nirajita Banerjee, India Managing Editor, LinkedIn News. Family and friends remain India's closest confidantes when it comes to sharing the size of their paychecks. However, "the current generation of young professionals are more willing to share pay information with their coworkers and industry peers as compared to other generations", Banerjee noted. In fact, Gen Z professionals are found most likely to share their pay across their whole network as compared to any other age group. Around 72 per cent of Gen Z and 64 per cent of millennials in India say they are comfortable sharing their pay information with family members, while 43 per cent of Gen Z and 30 per cent of millennials are also willing to confide in their close friends. "Gen Z are keen to influence change and eager to lead these conversations in the workplace, Banerjee added. About 45 per cent of professionals in India say pay discussions among peers are discouraged at their workplace. Further, 36 per cent of professionals in India also say they feel anxious sharing their pay information with anyone. 61% professionals tell their families what they earn, not co-workers or friends: survey

New Delhi, The Indian services sector expanded at the strongest rate in 12 years in February supported by <keyword id="16692020" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="favourable-demand-conditions" source="Orion">favourable demand conditions</keyword> and new business gains, a monthly survey said on Friday. The seasonally adjusted <keyword id="14109905" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sp-global-india-services-pmi" source="Orion">S&amp;P Global India Services PMI</keyword> Business Activity Index rose from 57.2 in January to 59.4 in February -- its highest level in 12 years. For the 19th straight month, the headline figure was above the neutral 50 threshold. In Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion while a score below 50 denotes contraction. "The service sector more than regained the growth momentum lost in January, posting the sharpest expansion in output for 12 years as demand resilience and competitive pricing policies underpinned the joint-best upturn in sales over the same period," said Pollyanna De Lima, Economics Associate Director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. On the prices front, there was substantial moderation in cost pressures as input prices increased at the slowest pace in nearly two-and-a-half years and output charge inflation softened to a 12-month low. New orders placed with service providers rose further in February, with several firms suggesting that competitive pricing boosted sales, the survey said. Still, capacity pressures remained mild and jobs rose only marginally, it added. "Despite the strong upturn in new business intakes, service providers noted only mild pressure on their capacities and, as a result, a large proportion of firms left payroll numbers unchanged," Lima said, adding that hiring growth was also dampened by a lack of confidence in the business environment. The degree of optimism recorded in February was the lowest for seven months and below the historical trend as some companies doubted demand would remain this resilient. Others displayed concerns surrounding fierce competition for new work. Meanwhile, the S&amp;P Global India Composite PMI Output Index -- which measures combined services and manufacturing output -- rose from 57.5 in January to 59 in February, highlighting a sharp and stronger rate of expansion. "Services firms also recorded a faster upturn in new business than their manufacturing counterparts. At the composite level, sales expanded at the joint-quickest rate in 11 years," the survey said. The S&amp;P Global India Services PMI is compiled by S&amp;P Global from responses to questionnaires sent to a panel of around 400 service sector companies. The panel is stratified by detailed sector and company workforce size, based on contributions to GDP. Data collection began in December 2005.

While a lot of them will also pay ‘attention’ to their resumes. As more Indian employees work from home, it will allow them to acquire new skills. The report says that over 60% of all the job seekers, employees and self-employed professionals will increase time spent in <keyword id="23248" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-learning">online learning</keyword> over the next two weeks. “Based on the inaugural findings of the Workforce Confidence Index, it is reassuring to see a majority of India’s workforce remain confident about long-term outlook, and determined in the short-term to upskill, pivot, and adapt. It has a lot to due with a <keyword id="637029" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="labor-shortage">labor shortage</keyword> and inflation, which are making it difficult for restaurants to compensate for all the business they lost during the pandemic."The worst of COVID for the restaurant business is right now," Christopher Bates, a master sommelier and founder of <a href="https://flxhospitality.com/">FLX Hospitality</a>, which operates five restaurants in New York's Finger Lakes region, told Insider.Restaurants typically catch up on bills in April before heading into the busy season of summer, he explained. But that's when most restaurants shut down last year. While restaurants fortunate enough to not shutter permanently have gradually returned over the past 18 months, Bates said, they're now under pressure to capture revenue before the pending slow season of winter."But we can't catch all revenue available because our industry doesn't have the workforce to do that," he said. Consequently, they've been closing their doors earlier than usual. "We're currently sitting in the six months where we need to make up for three winters and two years' worth of business, but we don't have the ability to be open for as many meals or hours necessary to do that."<h2>A labor shortage means higher wages and fewer hours</h2>A record 5.6% of <keyword id="2102016" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="restaurant-workers">restaurant workers</keyword> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-workers-are-quitting-at-record-rates-2021-6">quit in April</a>. That number is more than twice the rate of the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> as a whole, not counting farming jobs, according to Gordon Haskett Research Advisors.In April, a record high of 1.34 million of the sector's jobs were open, per the Bureau of Labor Staistics. A Joblist survey found that a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-hospitality-workers-restaurant-hotels-pay-wages-joblist-survey-2021-7">third of former hospitality workers</a> won't return to the industry because they want higher pay, better benefits, and a new work environment. It's working. Unable to keep locations staffed at pre-pandemic levels, restaurants are competing for workers with sign-on bonuses, perks, and higher wages. Wages among food and beverage small businesses have been accelerating at the fastest pace among all business in hard-hit service sectors, per platform data from payroll and benefits provider <a href="https://gusto.com/">Gusto</a>. They've risen 21% since the beginning of the year, from an average of $12.92 an hour in January 2021 to $15.66 an hour in June of 2021.While some have blamed the labor shortage on unemployment benefits, Bates says that's misleading, calling the shortage "a much broader issue" due to everything from childcare to "the inconsistency of the hospitality industry and the way it's been built for over the last 100 years."<h2>Inflation is causing restaurants to hike prices</h2>Operating on fewer hours and shelling out more for workers has left restaurants looking for ways to make up for lost revenue. Plus, food prices are on the rise."We don't want to cut product costs and impact the quality or experience, and at the same time we're paying considerably more for labor than we ever have," Bates said. "Between product costs and increased labor costs, the only way to offset this is to adjust prices where it's feasible."The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/beef-pork-prices-rising-inflation-when-food-costs-could-fall-2021-7">cost of food</a> away from home (such as food ordered at restuarants) rose by 0.7% last month, <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.t02.htm">based on </a><a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm">BLS' Consumer Price Index</a> released this week, and is 4.2% higher than a year earlier. A note from JP Morgan suggested that could be the result of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-market-outlook-wage-growth-leisure-hospitality-quits-economic-data-2021-6">wage increases for hospitality workers</a>, which is getting passed on to menu prices. Between pay cuts and a jobs crisis, nearly half of India’s workforce feels financially stretched, a survey shows

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Inflation has come down from pandemic highs, but one economist isn't expecting a return to 2%.</li><li>Rate cuts and other changes in the economy point to 3%+ long-term inflation, says Steven Blitz.</li></ul>For the last decade or so, the Federal Reserve's magic number for inflation has been 2%.The central bank has been aiming to keep the long-run inflation rate at this level to maintain stable prices and a healthy economy.And after the runaway prices of the pandemic era, it seems like the Fed is drawing closer to its 2% goal: the inflation rate was 2.4% for the 12-month period ending in September.However, don't count on a return to the 2% era, said Steven Blitz, chief economist at business intelligence firm GlobalData. Blitz believes the economy is on track for higher, not lower, long-term inflation."I think inflation is going to settle around 3%, 3.5%," Blitz told Business Insider in an interview. "There is now a higher base inflation rate than there was before COVID for a number of reasons."The Fed's rate-cutting campaign is certainly a contributing factor to higher future inflation, in Blitz's opinion. In the past, runaway inflation has only returned to 2% after the Fed engineered a hard landing that slowed consumer spending and wage growth, Blitz said. Financial historian <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-fed-powell-mistake-1970s-runaway-stagflation-unemployment-interest-rates-2024-10">Mark Higgins</a> points out that when the Fed cut rates too quickly in the 1960s, inflation spiked and contributed to stagflation in the 1970s.But there are other factors contributing to an increased long-term inflation rate, many of which Blitz tracked even before the pandemic.Debt levels are creeping up, generating an inflationary effect by increasing demand and prices for goods. In terms of consumer and business debt, after the Great Financial Crisis, households and businesses focused on deleveraging their balance sheets, but this trend started reversing after the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2018, Blitz said. Reduced taxes incentivized spending and also increased the national debt. A higher national debt balance can erode confidence in the dollar, further increasing inflation.Changing demographics in the workplace are also driving increasing debt and higher long-term inflation, according to Blitz.The workforce is getting younger as Gen Z employees enter the market and baby boomers and Gen X employees retire, resulting in growing spending power from Gen Z.As millennials age and gain more income, they're entering their prime homebuying years."They're in that part of their life where they normally leverage their balance sheets to take in physical assets," Blitz said. And as more millennials start families and have children, their expenditures will only continue to increase. These demographic changes will stoke consumer demand and, subsequently, inflation.And lastly, inflation is creeping up thanks to changes in international trade, Blitz said. Import penetration, or the amount of foreign goods flowing into the US, is reaching a plateau. Importing cheap goods from overseas has a disinflationary effect by decreasing prices paid by consumers.Blitz believes import penetration in the US is near or has already reached peak levels, meaning that the deflationary impacts of international trade will be muted in the future. With trends such as nearshoring and reshoring driving companies to move their operations closer to domestic markets, import penetration could certainly decline.In Blitz's perspective, all of these factors add up to an inflation rate exceeding 2% going forward.<h2 id="42586d83-d9bb-4112-b404-1a3b9311f18b">Investing for higher inflation</h2>Investors could start seeing persistent inflation take hold within the next year, according to Blitz. The September jobs report is already one early sign of sticky inflation, especially wage inflation, in his opinion.There are a few ways that investors can prepare their portfolios.In a high-interest-rate environment, bonds are less attractive, Blitz said. Bonds suffer from inflation risk because inflation eats into interest rate payments, reducing their real yield. Higher inflation also pushes up yields as investors demand higher compensation, reducing the value of the assets.Instead, look towards the stock market, he said. While increased inflation might hurt the stock market overall, there are some pockets of equities that will benefit. Technology and value stocks typically perform well in the wake of higher inflation, according to Blitz.In a high-inflation environment, companies look to put their capital into more durable investments as the dollar depreciates. Blitz believes the chip industry in particular is an inflation-resilient choice because they supply assets critical to many supply chains.High inflation can be a boon to value stocks because it boosts businesses' margins."In a lower inflation environment, it's harder to grow revenue off of the nominal growth of the economy," Blitz said. That results in outperformance from growth stocks, which investors anticipate will increase profits at a substantially higher pace relative to the rest of the market.In a 3% to 3.5% inflation environment, there's more opportunity for overlooked value stocks to appreciate. High-quality value stocks with stable margins will actually receive a lift from rising prices, especially if they have good cost management, Blitz said.Those looking to increase their exposure to these areas of the stock market can do so through funds such as the iShares Semiconductor ETF (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/ishares-semiconductor-etf-us4642875235?miRedirects=1">SOXX</a>) and the Vanguard Value Index Fund ETF (<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/etfs/vanguard-value-index-fund-etf-shares-us9229087443?miRedirects=1">VTV</a>).

I'm of the opinion that if you don't have a referral, it's almost impossible to find a job," he added.While the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-economy-goldman-unemployment-jobs-report-nonfarm-payrolls-rates-2024-10">US job market is improving</a>, experts say tech graduates are still struggling — and will continue to for a while.James O'Brien, a computer science professor at the University of California, Berkeley, told BI that he's observed a<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-degrees-job-berkeley-professor-ai-ubi-2024-10"> shrinking in the tech job market</a> that he doesn't expect to ever improve.A tech degree used to guarantee graduates at least one great job offer, but now many students are struggling to find work, he said.O'Brien puts a lot of the blame on AI and its effect on the labor market, especially lower-level jobs. "Even at the higher level, it makes people more efficient, so you tend to need fewer people," he said."It's like a perfect storm of this new technology, offshoring, and remote employment," he said. "I think our students are aware that the job market is changing."<h2 id="c8ab97f1-addf-468a-b580-fe17972f1b67">Graduate struggles</h2>Research from ADP, a payroll services company, has found that hiring for some tech jobs is declining, especially for software developers and engineers.ADP tracked employees at 6,500 companies, including over 75,000 software developers, from January 2018 and January 2024.The research found that while developer employment increased from January 2018 to November 2019, it has been falling ever since. The research found employment of software developers dropped sharply in January 2022 and, despite some fluctuation, has been falling since 2020.It doesn't help that tech degrees have traditionally been thought of as a surefire way to secure employment. According to data from the Federal Reserve released in February 2024, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/college-labor-market#--:explore:outcomes-by-major">computer science graduates</a> have an unemployment rate of 4.3%, higher than philosophy graduates."Hiring has definitely slowed this year," Kory Kantenga, LinkedIn's head of economics for the Americas, told BI. "Interest rates started coming up, and hiring started slowing down, and hiring has been on this gradual slowdown since about spring 2022."He said industries like tech, which have benefited from years of very low interest rates, were the most heavily impacted by the economic shift."Slowdowns hit entry-level workers the hardest, and it takes a while for them to recover," he said. "If companies are thinking about cost cutting, they're just going to leverage experienced workers to do some of the entry-level work until they can get some more entry-level workers in the door."<h2 id="bc06e95b-beaa-41f7-a806-58f4bfa6410d">'I joke about what my degree is even worth'</h2>Alec Wolyniec, a software developer with five years of experience, said he's noticed a sharp difference in opportunities over the last few years.He said interviewing in 2020 as a junior engineer was significantly easier than interviewing in 2024 as a mid-level candidate. Wolyniec graduated from Emory University in 2017 with a degree in computer science — and he's seen job opportunities dry up ever since."While I enjoyed computer science I did it more as a practical thing because I felt it would be a solid career path," he said. "Now I end up joking about what my degree is even worth."Wolyniec said by 2023, it had become dramatically harder to get a job in tech. He said he started to hear nothing back from jobs he applied to."That was kind of a shock," he said. "I also wasn't getting messages from recruiters on LinkedIn most weeks like I was before."<h2 id="5c910307-61f4-4abd-bd6a-09643efe2a5c">Layoff streak</h2>After two years of brutal tech layoffs, demand for tech workers has still not returned to pre-pandemic levels.According <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/global-labor-market-remains-sluggish-amidst-policy-ctevc/?trackingId=%2B5%2B5nGu3Sd%2BVg59O4eGFHA%3D%3D">to LinkedIn data, </a>the number of applicants per single job listed on the site in the technology, information, and media industry has increased from five to seven over the last two years.While hiring in the tech sector has stabilized since last summer, it has still not returned to pre-pandemic levels, per LinkedIn. According to data provided by the job site, there has been a 19% decrease in hiring for "information technology" roles since the summer of 2018.The tech industry has also been experiencing record layoffs, which have flooded the market with more qualified employees searching for new roles.In 2022, the tech industry laid off 263,000 workers, a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/199999/worldwide-tech-layoffs-covid-19/#:~:text=However%2C%20as%20lockdowns%20ended%2C%20economic,by%20trhe%20end%20of%202022.">record number of layoffs</a> for the sector. According to the layoff tracker, as of October 2024, 457 tech companies had laid off 139,534 workers this year.Alex Hernandez, a tech recruiter and former Twitter employee, attributes the decline in job opportunities to increased automation, a reevaluation of workforce needs post-pandemic, and tech companies' emphasis on efficiency."While certain areas, like data science and AI, have seen growth, other sectors have experienced contractions," he told BI."Tech layoffs, particularly in 2023, have created a ripple effect. "Initially, they led to a surplus of talent in the market, which increased competition for open roles. However, these layoffs have also caused companies to reassess their hiring strategies, focusing on roles with immediate return on investment," Hernandez added.<h2 id="0d2a4f88-603b-4e9d-acdf-6d8d7d334de0">AI anxiety</h2>Some think the recent rise in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-coding-tools-junior-software-developers-microsoft-github-copilot-chatgpt-2024-10">AI is also playing a role in entry-level employment.</a>"Many tasks that used to require junior developers or data analysts are being automated, meaning that entry-level roles are becoming more technical and demanding," Hernandez said.While some grads say they are worried about the effect AI automation might be having on their employment options, the data still isn't clear on how many entry-level jobs are actually being eaten by the new tech."It's certainly possible that AI could be playing a role in what's happening in the labor market, but I think it's too soon to make that call," Kantenga said. "But there just isn't a lot of bites right now to say that AI is eliminating roles for entry-level workers."There is also a vibe problem among job hunters. According to LinkedIn's workforce confidence index, worker confidence in finding and holding a job is at a four-year low, with Gen Z workers feeling particularly uncertain about their jobs.<h2 id="083a61d2-737d-49d7-b767-ad7bb43360ee">Gen Z feels overwhelmed </h2>Changes in the way we work may also be making things difficult for new graduates.LinkedIn's research found that 73% of Gen Z professionals globally feel overwhelmed by the rapid pace of workplace changes, and 55% of Gen Z workers are worried about being left behind because of how quickly their jobs and work are changing.Chris Abbass, CEO and founder of tech recruiting platform Talentful, says the rise of remote work is also making it more difficult for companies to train graduate employees."Since a lot of companies have moved to WFH, it's increasingly difficult to get new graduates with no work experience to ramp up and be productive in a new role," he said."Graduates need a lot of coaching and training for the first three to six months in a role, and this is very hard remotely. Companies are not investing in other ways to do this and are opting to avoid the risk and go with experienced hires," he added.

According to the HP Work Relationship Index, 50 per cent of Indian knowledge workers show a sense of workplace contentment against only 27 per cent of the global workforce reporting a healthy relationship with work. "We're seeing a major change in what matters most to India's workforce. They're seeking job satisfaction through flexibility, mental well-being, effective leadership, and the right tools," said Gurpreet Singh Brar, Vice President, HP India market. The study surveyed over 15,600 respondents, including knowledge workers, IT decision-makers, and business leaders in 12 countries, with a sample size of over 1,300 respondents in India. The survey pinpointed six key drivers of a thriving work relationship -- fulfilment, leadership, people-centricity, skills, tools, and workspace. According to the study, India particularly excels in fulfilment and skills aspects. As the landscape of <keyword id="4350888" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="work-relationships" source="Orion">work relationships</keyword> is changing rapidly in India, 78 per cent of knowledge workers reported increased expectations regarding their relationship with work in the past 2-3 years. Moreover, the report said that only two in five knowledge workers feel confident that their company can give them the right tools to support hybrid work. About 80 per cent mentioned that they believe in the importance of encouraging open emotional communication within the workplace. Business leaders also agreed, with 76 per cent saying emotional intelligence is vital for leadership success and a strong 90 per cent think showing empathy matters. However, a significant gap exists as nearly half (47 per cent) of knowledge workers feel their company's leaders aren't meeting their emotional expectations.

The billionaire has been facing headwinds on multiple fronts. Since the year started, Musk's fortune, which is largely based on his Tesla holdings, has dropped $40.5 billion, or 17.7%, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/billionaires/profiles/elon-r-musk/">Bloomberg Billionaires Index</a>.Thus far, Musk's purchase of Twitter doesn't appear to be going according to plan. In Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion while a score below 50 denotes contraction. "India's service sector posted a remarkable performance in April, with demand strength backing the strongest increases in new business and output in just under 13 years. Whereas some companies lifted headcounts due to rising output needs, the vast majority left them unchanged amid sufficient workers for current requirements. "One area of weakness highlighted in the latest results was the labour market. Despite the substantial pick-up in sales growth and improved business sentiment towards the outlook, the increase in employment seen in April was negligible and failed to gain meaningful traction," Lima said. Going ahead, marketing efforts, plans to price competitively and an increased focus on customer relations boosted business confidence in April. "Close to 22 per cent of companies forecast growth of business activity over the course of the coming 12 months, compared with 2 per cent that anticipate a reduction," the survey said. Meanwhile, the S&amp;P Global India Composite PMI Output Index -- which measures combined services and manufacturing output -- rose from 58.4 in March to 61.6 in April, its highest mark since July 2010. Despite the substantial upturn in sales, job creation across the private sector remained mild. Rates of expansion were broadly similar at manufacturing firms and their service counterparts. At the composite level, input costs rose at the fastest pace since January and charge inflation reached a four-month high.
