There are endless zoom calls, bosses overworking them because really where else can they go in a lockdown and to top it all – pay cuts and the fear that if they speak up now, there’s a threat to their job. “One big issue is there is no segregation between personal life and office life now. We are expected to be available all the time, including weekends, simply because the employer assumes that we are at home all the time due to the ongoing situation,” said an employee at a law firm. Endless meetings and work hours In India, employees are working way beyond 48 hours a week – crossing International Labour Organization’s norms of working. According to the labour standards. “the general standard is 48 regular hours of work per week, with a maximum of eight hours per day.” says the ILO website. In April, Microsoft Teams saw 200 million meeting participants in a single day and as of April 29 a new daily record of 4.1 billion meeting minutes in one day. Understanding the stress and anxiety of employees, tech giant Google in May announced a company holiday to let employees relax. “One of the bigger challenges for a distributed workforce is collaboration. It helps to have core working hours for scheduling all work-related virtual meetings and interactions. This gives employees clarity and helps set boundaries,” said Anuradha Bharat, Head, People Operations at Razorpay. Taking cognizance of the piling number of meetings on employees, gaming unicorn DreamSports which runs Dream11 has announced ‘no meeting Thursdays’ to allow one day a week that are meeting-free for straight 4 hours. The startup has also extended the lunch break from 60 minutes to 90 minutes. “Since the onset of COVID19, there has been a drastic change in lifestyle clubbed with a global economic slowdown. This has led to anxiety and insecurity among people everywhere. To ensure the mental and physical wellbeing of our employees, Dream Sports introduced various programs and activities to build positivity and boost their morale,” said Kevin Freitas, CHRO, Dream Sports. The reason? It wants teams to work together, co-exist and especially new hires who have never seen ‘office’ to learn from their colleagues. It looks like employees are half-way there too, and miss being a part of teams. “Collaborating with their teams, socializing and bonding with colleagues, and having in-person meetings with clients are among the top reasons why employees want to go back to the office,” says a report by Awfis and Savills India. The generation that’s most eager to come to office are the GenZs and millennials. Over half of them surveyed prefer an ‘only office’ working model. This preference among the younger workforce might be linked to the significance they place on interpersonal interactions in the workplace, the report says. “Despite the common belief that the younger workforce seeks remote isolation, our research uncovers a significant desire for the indispensable impact of human interaction in a physical workplace. In a digital age, it is heartening to observe the enduring significance of the physical office as a center for fostering creativity, innovation, and shared learning experiences,” said Sumit Lakhani, deputy CEO of Awfis, a co-working space network. GenX Plus respondents, i.e. those over 50 years of age, veered towards hybrid or office-dominated work models as they crave for flexibility, the report adds. Metro office want them back In the survey, 66% respondents said that they have been mandated to go to office. But half of them also said that they prefer it that way. The location of the office also matters when it comes to calling people back-to-office. In Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, 71% of employees are required to work exclusively from the office in contrast to 63% in other cities. “In the top three cities, the only-office model is more prevalent, indicating a higher emphasis on in-office work. Other cities are more likely to adopt only-remote and remote-dominant hybrid work models, highlighting a greater preference for remote work or a mix of remote and office work,” the report added. Reverse migration and commutes The shift from work-from-home to back-to-office is riddled with challenges. Not only has a lot of the workforce shifted to their hometowns, a few have gotten used to managing work and personal life – a habit that would be hard to shake off. While going back-to-office will relieve people from the fatigue of working from home, it also means dealing with early morning traffic and more. As many as 31% of respondents considered commuting to work as their biggest concern, while 26% of respondents considered the high cost of living to be their primary challenge. For 16% of them, relocating from their hometown is a challenge. And, for 15% poor work-life balance to be a reason to not return to office. The higher costs are pinching Gen Zs the most as they face the after-effects of reverse migration. Gen-Xers say that poor-work life balance as a reason, early millennials believe that inability to focus will creep in as they work from office only.

The onset of the Covid-19 <keyword id="43587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pandemic" source="Orion">pandemic</keyword> made working from home the new normal for many job roles. According to <keyword id="218117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="naukri-com" source="Orion">Naukri.com</keyword>, the job platform has seen 93,000 permanent and temporary remote jobs being listed since July last year. Of these, 22 per cent jobs were for permanent remote roles only. In the last six months, Naukri.com has seen 32 lakh job searches for permanent and temporary remote jobs, by Indian job seekers. Of these, about 57 per cent of searches were made for permanent remote jobs during the same time, with the highest search that is, over 3.5 lakh being reported only in the month of December 2021. "There is a foundational change in how recruiters are setting up organisational structures," said Pawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer, Naukri.com, in a statement. "While uncertainty prevails due to the pandemic, more and more recruiters are acknowledging the benefits of work from anywhere like access to talent and more inclusion and are now beginning to make permanent changes to the human resource and infrastructure requirements at a corporate level," he added. In general, both large and small companies have posted all three types of jobs i.e. regular jobs, temporary work-from-home and totally remote jobs. Data reflects that IT Software, Software Services, ITeS and Recruitment/Staffing sectors are posting more permanently remote jobs. Some of the companies posting both temporary and permanent remote jobs are Amazon, Tech Mahindra, HCL, PWC, Trigent, Flipkart, Siemens, Deloitte, Oracle, Zensar, TCS, Capgemini etc, the report said. Increasing number of Indians now prefer to permanently work from home since pandemic, says a report

The absence of transportation costs and reimbursements has helped companies save money during the lockdown. Rao added that Infosys has hired 5,000 employees in the last quarter through lateral hiring. “There is a general freeze on hiring, overall we will continue to look for talent in niche areas. In Q1 itself 4,000+ lateral hiring. The trend will continue going forward as well based on the needs,” he said. Most recently, job search engine <a href="https://www.flexjobs.com/blog/post/flexjobs-mha-survey-flexible-work-improves-mental-health/">FlexJobs</a> conducted a survey of 800 employees across the US to assess how workers are faring with their mental health amid the coronavirus pandemic.The survey was conducted at the end of August and found that nearly half of respondents with flexible work options — 48% — reported their work-life balance is very good or excellent. Just 36% of workers without flexible work options said the same.Roughly 54% of those respondents with flexible working conditions found that they had the emotional support necessary to manage the stress that accompanied the job, while just 45% of those without flexible working conditions reported the same.Above all, the majority of workers were not interested in returning to an office post-pandemic. Roughly 66% of all respondents, or two-thirds of workers, said they would prefer to work remotely full-time following the pandemic. The other 33%, or one-third of respondents, said they would prefer a combination of working in an office and working from home. Less than 2% of respondents said they would prefer to be in an office full-time.Separately, a pre-pandemic survey of 1,200 conducted by videoconferencing company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/study-says-remote-workers-are-happier-stay-in-jobs-longer-2019-9">Owl Labs</a> found that 91% of respondents said remote work had improved their work-life balance, while 79% said it had increased their productivity and focus, and 78% said it had provided them with less stress.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/54-percent-adults-want-mainly-work-remote-after-pandemic-study-2020-5">An IBM</a> study confirmed such findings. And it no doubt drives <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-asking-employees-to-work-from-home-due-to-coronavirus-2020">more major companies</a> to commit to working from home indefinitely as a business <keyword id="6363690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Strategy">strategy</keyword>. But other studies have found that remote work ultimately blurs the line between work and life, erasing any notion of work-life balance.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-study-meetings-shorter-hours-longer-during-pandemic-2020-7">Microsoft analyzed the remote work habits of 350 of its own employees</a> in July, and found that employees were spending 10% more time in meetings each week. And it's not just meeting time that skyrocketed — total working time did, too. The analysis found that Microsoft employees were typically working through lunch breaks and well into the night. The number of instant messages sent between 6:00 p.m. and midnight increased by 52% amid the pandemic, according to the analysis.Other studies found similar evidence of remote work increasing working hours. A <a href="https://businessfacilities.com/2020/03/u-s-employees-working-more-hours-during-covid-19-pandemic/">Business Facilities study</a> found that US working hours increased 40% in March, adding three extra hours per day. No other country saw an increase so dramatic due to the pandemic.Meanwhile, a separate study conducted by consulting firm <a href="https://www.eaglehillconsulting.com/about-us/news/announcements/nearly-half-of-u-s-employees-feel-burnt-out-with-one-in-four-attributing-stress-to-the-covid-19-pandemic/">Eagle Hill</a> found that 45% of workers were already feeling burnout in April. Roughly 45% of workers cited workload as the root cause, while another 35% cited trying to establish a new sense of work-life balance.What to make of this apparent contradiction? With so many Americans reporting that they would rather continue working remotely anyway, they may consider blurring the line between their personal and professional lives to be less stressful than the old way of working. Or perhaps the stress of any job these days — no matter how demanding it is — is better than the alternative of unemployment.Whatever the truth is, the world of remote work is a strange new one, and it may become normal if it lasts for much longer — with all the attendant stress and relief that may bring to the typical American worker.
