<keyword id="42456" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ICICI">ICICI</keyword> MD&amp;CEO <keyword id="45875" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chanda-Kochhar">Chanda Kochhar</keyword> received the <keyword id="278446" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Woodrow-Wilson">Woodrow Wilson</keyword> Award for Global Corporate Citizenship from the <keyword id="128074" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Woodrow-Wilson-Centre">Woodrow Wilson Centre</keyword> in Washington DC.<br /><br />She is the first Indian woman to receive the award, which has been received by former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Infosys founder Narayana Murthy.<br /><br />The award was conferred for demonstrating a commitment to the common good - beyond the bottom line. <br /><br />This is not the first time when Kochhar has received a prestigious award. Time and again, her efforts have been recognised for her role in shaping the retail banking sector in India as well as her contributions to various forums in India and globally.<br /><br />Kochhar received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Carleton University, Canada in 2014. She was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 2011.<br /><br />Kochhar, who began her career with erstwhile ICICI Limited in 1984, was elevated as Managing Director &amp; CEO of ICICI Bank in 2009. She was instrumental in establishing ICICI Bank during the 1990s, and subsequently headed the infrastructure finance and corporate banking business in ICICI Limited. <br /><br /> During 2006-2007, she led the bank’s corporate and international banking businesses. <br /> Terrorist groups, such as <keyword id="44984" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Al-Qaeda">Al-Qaeda</keyword>, have expanded their online presence with the help of social media platforms like <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>, <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>, <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> and <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword>, posing new challenges for the security agencies, a report released by the Woodrow Wilson Centre’s DC Commons Lab said.<br />

"All terrorist organisations are using many online platforms," said Gabriel Weimann, a professor of Communication and author of the report. "From the point of view of the terrorists, social media provides an important advantage of anonymity," he said. These social media platform are now used as tools for recruitment, propaganda, fundraising and imparting training on how to make a bomb.<br />

Back in 1998, only 12 terrorist-linked websites were present, but now the number has swelled to about 10,000, said Weimann. Moreover, they have even created forums and chat rooms, he added.<br />

Weimann said that the groups "never invented anything" online, but have misused the online freedom to create tools such as an online magazine <em><keyword id="6393492" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="inspire">Inspire</keyword>, </em>which is used to recruit terrorists.<br />

The Russian, Prussian, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian empires collapsed, the British and French divided the Middle East, and the U.S. fully entered onto the world stage.</p>
<p>By 1916 the U.S., though still nominally neutral, had become the world's largest economy, and gradually become the major banker of Allied operations. Historian Adam Tooze, in his book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Deluge-America-Remaking-1916-1931/dp/0670024929/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1404853110&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=the+deluge">The Deluge</a>," argues that the U.S. was the economic force behind the Allies.</p>
<p>Wall Street firms helped bankroll both the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Passchendaele, according to Tooze. These battles helped to turn the tide of the war even before actual U.S. military involvement. </p>
<p>When the Americans did enter the war in 1917, the U.S. achieved a level of worldwide influence that it had never had before. America's crucial economic assistance to the Allies, followed by its eventually decisive military role, allowed the U.S. to play an important part in dictating the war's resolution. </p>
<p>"By 1918 the U.S. president, Woodrow Wilson, was in a position to dictate peace to the world; with, as its centre piece, his idealistic plan for a League of Nations," Ben Shephard of <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/jun/01/the-deluge-the-great-war-remaking-global-order-review-bold-analysis-adam-tooze">The Guardian</a> notes. Although the U.S. insisted on the League's formation, Congress never actually ratified the peace treaty or joined the League, hampering its overall effectiveness. </p>
<p>Aside from the formation of the League of Nations, and its key part in drafting the Treaty of Versailles, the U.S. further cemented its presence on the world stage with the signing of the <a href="http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/636484/Washington-Conference">Washington Naval Treaty of 1922</a>. The U.S.-initiated treaty attempted to work out security agreements between the U.S., Japan, Great Britain, and France in the Pacific.  </p>
<p>The U.S.'s brokered peace efforts ultimately proved fruitless. The U.S. withdrew into a period of <a href="https://history.state.gov/milestones/1937-1945/american-isolationism">isolationism</a> in the 1930s as the world quickly headed towards World War II. Tooze, however, believes that the ascendancy of the U.S. into the world stage is the culmination of America's involvement in the first world war - which began with its financial support for the Allies, before a single American soldier joined the fight in Europe.</p>

On Monday, State Department spokesman John Kirby noted that Iran had arrested some protesters who ransacked the embassy, undercutting the Saudi claim that Iran's government had an implicit hand in the embassy attack.</span></p><p><span>This comment, and the administration's overall response to the spat, has led some experts to wonder whose side the White House is really on.</span></p><p><span>Tony Badran, a Middle East expert at the Foundation for <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Defense">Defense</keyword> of Democracies, said he believes the Obama administration has set </span><span>a </span><span>"very dangerous precedent" not only by failing to express support for its ally, but also by framing the conflict as a Sunni-Shia religious war.</span></p><p><span>Indeed, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said on Monday that the conflict "breaks down along sectarian lines." He said the US had raised "direct concerns" to Saudi officials in advance "<span>about the potential damaging consequences of following through on the execution" of al-Nimr.</span></span></p><p><span>"Unfortunately, the concerns that we expressed to the Saudis have precipitated the kinds of consequences that we were concerned about," Earnest said.</span><span><br /></span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Mehdi Ghasemi/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Flames and smoke rise from Saudi Arabia's embassy during a demonstration in Tehran January 2, 2016. Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi Embassy in Tehran early on Sunday morning as Shi'ite Muslim Iran reacted with fury to Saudi Arabia's execution of a prominent Shi'ite cleric.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p>But this rhetoric, Badran said, only adds fuel to Iran's argument that the execution of al-Nimr "was a deliberate provocation" against Iran and its Shia allies - which, in turn, implies that Iran is a legitimate representative of the region's Shi'ite Muslims.</p><p>"The White House is therefore sending a new message to Saudi Arabia," Badran added. "'Provoke at your peril.'"</p><p>That message, Badran said, is sent in conjunction with the Obama administration's vision for a new Middle East order - one <span>in which Iran plays a central, if not leading, role. That vision, Badran believes, stems from Obama's desire to preserve a nuclear deal that will be the cornerstone of his foreign-policy legacy.</span></p><p><span>"Attacks on Saudi diplomats are attacks on the US order in the Middle East," Badran said, referring to Saudi Arabia's long-time status as a major US ally. "By not stepping up to defend that order, the US has essentially given Iran permission to try and tear it down."</span></p><p> </p><p>Aaron David Miller, a former Middle East negotiator who is a vice president at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, echoed this sentiment <a href="http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2016-01-05/obama-s-middle-east-balancing-act-tilts-toward-iran">in an interview with Bloomberg View</a>.</p><p>"The Iranians hold the Obama legacy in their hands," said Miller, who worked in the State Department for more than two decades. The poster reads, "Innocent blood on your hands, Al-Saud".</p></div><p></p></div></div><span></span></p><p><span>Other analysts have suggested that Iran's rising influence in the region led an increasingly isolated Saudi Arabia to push back against Iran and its allies, partly explaining the decision to execute al-Nimr.</span></p><p><span><span>"The key source of Saudi anxiety is Iran," the political-risk firm Eurasia Group noted in its 2016 analysis of the top risks to the world. "Soon to be free of sanctions, Iran's economy will strengthen, and its government will have more money to spend in support of regional clients."</span></span></p><p>But Badran said the US maintaining that functional relationship is key to the success of what he termed as the administration's "misguided approach to Syria," <span>which aims to minimize US involvement in the conflict while recognizing Iran as a legitimate stakeholder in the country's future. </span></p><p><span>That policy was articulated most clearly in November when Russian officials, with the US' blessing, invited Iran to Vienna to participate in peace talks over Syria for the first time since the war erupted in 2011. </span></p><p>The invitation was "in line with Obama's long-held perception of Syria as an Iranian sphere of influence, and his desire to legitimize Iran as a regional interlocutor of the US," Badran said at the time.
