Partnering with entities like Patanjali, Flipkart, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the initiative also focuses on branding and marketing these products, ostensibly connecting women with credit lines and MUDRA loans for financial support. Almost an year on, the scheme is all set to get some well-deserved boost in the Budget 2024 to be presented on July 23. Speaking to after the inauguration of the new Agriculture Development Research and Training Centre at Killa under the Gomati district of Tripura, Nath said, "The central government has launched the scheme called drone Didi which is especially for women. Soon after the scheme was launched, a state committee was constituted. As per the recommendations of the committee, drones will be sent to the agriculture sub-divisions." According to Nath, the appointment of trainers has already been done who will impart training to the SHG members. "The trainers are already recruited. We hope within the next two months drones will reach each of the 47 agri-subdivisions," he added. The Minister also announced that a special scheme has been undertaken to appoint "Krishi Sakhis (Friends of Farmers)" who provide agriculture-related solutions to the farmers in the rural areas. "One sakhi (friend) will be appointed for one rural local body such as Gram panchayats and Village Committees. We have forwarded the proposal to the central government. If we get the approval, the process of appointing Sakhis will be started immediately." On the agricultural infrastructure he inaugurated, Nath said, "We are setting up new infrastructure in all agri subdivisions. This is a new training center set up for the farmers of the area. It was not until her most recent pregnancy that she also started to use an AI chatbot on the fem-tech app Soula, which she said helped with reducing depressive symptoms and reassuring her about her mental health."It tells me: 'Welcome back, LeRonika. Your reactions are natural,'" said Francis, who is based in New Iberia, Louisiana.The AI chatbot called "Dua" also sent her some videos that she could watch about self-hugging, a practice that could reduce stress levels."I feel like Dua is there more than anything. It really showed me: OK, this is what you could do. Make sure you make time for yourself, too, because that's important as well," said Francis.Soula was co-founded by Natallia Miranchuk and Andrei Kulik, who conceptualized a 24/7 AI doula that could close the gap in mental health support for mothers during pregnancy and postpartum periods. "A human could talk about all their experience and what they've seen and give referrals. While there's Medicaid coverage for doulas in several states, not all private health insurance plans cover these expenses. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0266613821003120">Long wait times and socioeconomic inequality</a> also contribute to increased levels of stress and lack of healthcare usage among mothers and pregnant people."Traditionally, it's been something that's been available only to folks with a lot of money and a lot of resources. The people that benefit the most from doula care are those that might not trust the healthcare system," said Dr. Devon Rupley, an attending physician and OB/GYN specialist at NYC Health. For $22 per hour, she helped improve the chatbot by using it "hand-in-hand" during her pregnancies, adding in her expertise.While asking questions on Google could yield more informational responses, Pacheco said mothers would want something that provided "more of that reassurance that Google wouldn't."For Armani Grant, a Soula user who became pregnant at 18, Google felt overwhelming. The chatbot allowed her to ask questions that she wouldn't feel comfortable asking her mother. Pacheco said many women she's worked with reported similar experiences."They might even feel incompetent to ask the question, which no woman should ever feel, but with my history of working with people, they definitely tend to revert to: I'm sorry, I'm asking this question for some reason, and that might just be because of the societal pressure that more medicalized doctors have put on people that they don't give the time and day to us," Pacheco said.The app isn't meant to completely replace a doula. Moreover, retention rates of AI healthcare chatbots can be low, said Johannes Eichstaedt, a computational social scientist and assistant professor of psychology at Stanford University. The high dropout rates for healthcare apps are "an elephant in the room," he said.At the same time, Pacheco said AI bots can help "calm nerves" and fill the gaps when patients feel they are "bothering" their healthcare providers."AI isn't like a healthcare provider to give you guidance, but it's supposed to be there to give you a little bit more comfort," Pacheco said.

Similarly, in the tribal regions of Chhattisgarh, a collective effort by local community leaders has revitalized traditional agricultural practices. The community has reintroduced indigenous crops like millets and pulses, which are more resilient to the changing climate and require fewer resources to cultivate. These crops are rich in essential nutrients and have historically been part of the local diet. The community's efforts have not only preserved these traditional foods but also improved the nutritional status of the population, particularly children and women. Stunted, wasted, and underweight are key indicators of malnutrition in children aged 0-5 years. The research highlighted that while government programs and interventions are essential, the involvement and initiative of the community are critical to the success and sustainability of these efforts. One of the key findings of the study was that communities with active local participation in nutrition-related activities, such as kitchen gardening and the cultivation of traditional crops, had a higher intake of diverse and nutritious food. The research, which employed a mix of focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and home observations, reveals how collective and individual contexts -- ranging from socio-cultural norms to economic challenges -- influence dietary practices across different communities like the brick-kiln workers, fishers, and salt pan workers among others. This was particularly evident in regions where women played a central role in these initiatives. The study also noted that these communities were more resilient to food insecurity and were better able to cope with economic and environmental challenges. For example, the study looked into the lives of salt pan workers in Jodhpur who prioritize their children's nutrition despite financial hardships. They ensure that their children never go hungry, even if it means offering biscuits or bread-milk. It suggested that while government initiatives provide the necessary framework and resources, real change happens when communities take ownership of these programmes and adapt them to their local contexts. To enhance the effectiveness of nutritional interventions for pregnant women and children under five, several key recommendations emerge from the study. First, there is a critical need to strengthen the role of ASHA and Anganwadi workers, who are often the primary source of health information in many communities. By providing these workers with advanced training that equips them to offer tailored advice based on the specific socio-cultural and economic contexts of the families they serve, the reach and impact of nutritional programs can be significantly increased. Subsidies for essential complementary foods are another vital measure to address the financial barriers that many families face. These subsidies would ensure that even in economically disadvantaged households, children receive the necessary nutrients during crucial developmental stages, the study recommended. Additionally, promoting a blend of legacy knowledge with modern nutritional insights can lead to more culturally acceptable and effective practices. Health education programs that respect and incorporate local beliefs while introducing scientifically backed practices are likely to be more successful in achieving sustainable behavioral change. Support for maternal health is also paramount. Implementing programs that provide additional food or rest for pregnant women, particularly during the last trimester, can have a positive impact on both maternal and child health outcomes. These programs should be designed with an understanding of local familial structures and dynamics, ensuring that they are accessible and acceptable within the community. Community-based nutritional programs should be developed to emphasize the importance of child nutrition and encourage collective action. Workshops and informational sessions led by trusted community members or healthcare professionals can play a crucial role in disseminating knowledge and encouraging healthy practices. Finally, improving access to fresh and nutritious food, particularly in remote or economically disadvantaged areas, is essential. Most were Asian, like me, and professionals: lawyers, engineers, and artists.The other women really understood what it was like to go through the gaslighting and manipulation that we all went through. They helped me in moments of doubt, fear, anger, and sadness. And they felt those emotions right along with me.With their support, I started to heal. I saw doctors to care for my physical and mental health and even went on medication to help with depression and anxiety for a time. I talked to lawyers, but they informed me that my ex technically hadn't broken any laws. I worked with a therapist because the biggest breach of trust I had was with myself. I wanted to know why I was such easy prey for him.<h2 id="f8c47a5f-70da-4729-a068-a5881209e7ec">These relationships are the silver lining to my cheating ex</h2>My relationship with two of the women developed into a deep friendship beyond the short messages I exchanged with the others. In the year since this happened, they've provided me with so much encouragement. We all cheer each other on when it comes to healing, dating, and just living life.Our relationship has never felt competitive but has always felt the complete opposite: supportive.I've dated a bit since my ex, but for better or worse, it's easier for me to say no to people now. I'm not in a serious relationship, but I'm working on rebuilding my confidence and practicing self-compassion and love. Luckily, I have two new friends who can understand exactly what I'm going through. I'm so grateful I crossed paths with them, even under very disturbing circumstances.

We've learned that waiting for confidence to come first is literally squashing our professional ambitions like a bug.New situations should feel awkward, especially in social situations where there is a risk of embarrassment or rejection. Not only that, it's healthy and even useful to feel self-doubt if that feeling raises your effort, motivates you to prepare more, and inspires you to reach higher and grow faster. <a href="https://hbr.org/2022/12/choose-courage-over-confidence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">In an article for "Harvard Business Review," advisor and author Christine Hunter Arscott reveals</a> that despite this pattern of self-doubt in women, many women continue to thrive. The vast majority of successful women leaders she interviewed and coached have built vibrant and fulfilling careers even while looking their self-doubt square in the face."What these women also had in common is courage in the absence of confidence — a trait that is often weaponized against women and used to explain why they fail to achieve career goals," Arscott explains. Qualities like vulnerability, warmth, empathy, and humility have taken center stage in professional development conversations, and developing these skills can be uncomfortable and challenging for many people, especially men.My client Oliver, a senior director at a marketing agency, told me about a time his direct report, Sienna, came to him wanting to talk about challenges she was having in her personal life that were affecting her work. As someone who came from a "stiff-upper-lip" British upbringing where emotional issues were rarely discussed, Oliver knew pursuing these types of conversations was an uncomfortable growth edge for him."I was trying to find the right words, but I was flailing," he shared. "I couldn't shake the feeling that leaders were supposed to be better at this. I definitely felt like an imposter."Ultimately, he stayed with the conversation and told Sienna a version of what he told me: (1) he wished he had the right words, (2) <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-leaders-can-build-emotional-intelligence-2021-2">he was learning how to better manage emotional conversations</a>, and (3) he felt awkward about all of it, but his intentions were good and he was going to try his best. It turns out that was all Sienna needed to hear to feel heard and supported. The conversation never got to a moment of deep disclosure, and it never quite veered into true vulnerability, but simply owning up to his feelings of awkwardness created a bonding moment in their professional relationship.For Oliver, being willing to acknowledge and <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-stop-being-awkward-in-conversation-2023-6">embrace feelings of awkwardness</a> at work led to greater confidence as a leader and built a stronger professional relationship with a valued team member. Imposter syndrome and self-doubt can actually help you build confidence — and even be healthy

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Women often see a big advantage to doing independent work instead of having a permanent job.</li><li>A survey from the freelance platform Fiverr found women prize flexibility and working from home.</li></ul>Women often see a clear advantage to independent work over traditional permanent employment.That's according to a recent report from Fiverr, the freelance-service marketplace.Women are more likely than men to have taken up independent work because they want more flexibility in their schedule (39% compared with 22% of men), prefer to work from home (41% compared with 31% of men), and want to avoid an unpleasant or toxic work environment (26% compared with 15% of men)."The freelance economy brings many opportunities for women. By the nature of freelancing, it provides a wide range of flexibility and autonomy — from managing their own hours, setting their own rates, and being their own boss," <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=f7ad12fcde120b47e740681bc4252116974f9ae1402f70564b888ab1201a1272&amp;postID=6489d33cd81c4d141c327034&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fgali-arnon-71964010%2F%3ForiginalSubdomain%3Dil" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gali Arnon</a>, Fiverr's chief marketing officer, told Insider in an email. "Women who enter the freelance lifestyle can lead more sustainable and secure livelihoods as opposed to being under a single employer," Arnon said. The freelance market is growing, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-make-money-on-fiverr-build-million-freelance-business-2022-8">Insider has reported</a>. In fact, 39% of the US workforce took on freelance jobs in 2022 and, this year, searches across marketing, social media, and consulting are trending on Fiverr, a representative from the platform said.Fiverr's survey, released in April, found that despite economic uncertainty, the independent workforce saw a continued increase in revenue. Around 48% made more money from their independent work in 2022, up from 40% reporting an increase in 2021. Professional services, whether they be legal, accounting, or consulting, make up a significant portion of the independent professional workforce in the US, Arnon said. The survey found women are more likely to provide professional services (58% compared with 43% of men) and creative services (24% compared with 18% of men), but less likely to provide technical services (19% compared with 39% of men).Arnon said women who start companies can "leverage their own experiences to create businesses that tap into new and diverse markets or develop creative enterprises that can serve the needs of overlooked communities." A 34-year-old woman from Alabama quoted in the survey said steering her own ship helps put her at ease. "I don't have to endure toxic coworkers and management. I don't have to work 60 hours a week and feel unappreciated," she said.<h2>Emerging opportunities in areas such as AI</h2>Fiverr has seen an "exponential increase in supply and demand for AI services," Arnon said, and with the rise of generative artificial intelligence and tools like ChatGPT, she added, " I hope that women take hold of this opportunity and begin cultivating AI skills and businesses around AI services."The survey found that participants providing technical services were the most likely to feel financially secure working independently. Of course, starting a business can be tricky, and Arnon noted the top three roadblocks women run into when starting companies are inequitable access, opportunity, and compensation. "Women still bear the brunt of hurdles throughout their professional development," Arnon said. And "self-empowerment through freelancing can expand their horizons and take full control of their own professional lives."Overall, the freelance community is thriving, with nearly three in four independent workers continuing to be highly satisfied — giving a six or seven rating on a seven-point scale — with their work, and the work-life balance that comes with being their own boss, the survey found. Arnon said that by 2028, half of the US workforce could be freelancing. "Women will only continue to drive that exponential growth in the coming years, with more and more accomplished professionals opting into independent work instead of the traditional 9-5," she said.To gather its findings, Fiverr worked with Rockbridge Associates to analyze tens of millions of tax returns from annual US census data to explore the size, growth, and skills of independent professionals across more than two dozen of the largest metropolitan areas for freelance, knowledge-based work. The report included responses from 738 completed surveys from an online research panel in March and focused on three industries: creative services, skilled technical services, and skilled professional services. A 60-year-old woman in Virginia quoted in the survey saw independent work as a way to achieve freedom and bring in more money. "I have more flexibility in scheduling the hours I work. I have more satisfaction in completing my goals. I can give myself a raise each year," she said.

Women are jumping at the chance to be their own boss

In that time, there were two major recessions in the US: the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dot-com-bubble-burst-20th-anniversary-experts-coronavirus-tech-crash-2020-3">dot-com bubble burst</a> and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/what-caused-the-great-recession">Great Recession of 2008</a>.Despite economic instability, her company remained strong. "It didn't really affect us in a negative way," she said.Elting cofounded TransPerfect in 1992 while earning her MBA at New York University. She's one of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/book-recommendations-richest-women-entrepreneurs-america-2020-10">America's richest self-made women</a>, according to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/profile/liz-elting/?list=self-made-women&amp;sh=1bb55d4721a4">Forbes</a>, which estimated her net worth in June to be $370 million. In 2018, she <a href="https://delawarebusinesstimes.com/news/judge-approves-sale-translation-company-co-founder/">sold her company shares for $385 million</a> to her TransPerfect cofounder, Phil Shawe.There's growing concern among experts that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/are-we-in-a-recession">another recession is on the horizon</a>. The Federal Reserve recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-aggressively-hikes-interest-rates-fight-inflation-amplifying-recession-concerns-2022-11">hiked interest rates</a> for the fourth time to offset inflation, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-news-today-75-basis-point-rate-hike-expected-2022-10">stock prices have dropped</a>, and Americans have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-likely-economic-downturn-inflation-household-finances-worsening-spending-slowdown-2022-10">spending their savings</a>. Some analysts have speculated that the <a href="https://fortune.com/2022/10/18/when-will-economy-enter-recession-fitch-early-1990s-2023/">next recession could mimic the downturn in 1990 and 1991</a>.Elting attributed TransPerfect's resilience to what she called a "culture of frugality." As entrepreneurs plan for a recession, here are Elting's tips for staying frugal and minimizing risk.<h2>Diversify your clients to mitigate risk</h2>TransPerfect started as a translation service that worked with clients in a variety of industries, including the legal, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, and mining industries. That meant it never relied on the success of any one market.Additionally, Elting said, each client represented no more than 2% of the company's business. This helped TransPerfect diversify its risk — if one client canceled a contract, it wasn't a significant financial loss.She advised entrepreneurs to take this approach if they want to continue generating consistent revenue during economic crises."Make sure no one client accounts for too much of your business," she said. "In the early days, that big client will take you to the next level, but by the same token, make sure you're not relying on a small number of clients."<h2>Don't spend money you don't have</h2>Elting said that no matter TransPerfect's stage of growth — from a startup with just a few employees to a global organization with international offices — every major expense was meticulously planned.For example, she waited two years to hire any employees and did so only once the company reached $500,000 in annual revenue."We waited longer than some companies do," she said. "When we didn't have a lot of clients, when we were small and just starting out, we made sure we didn't spend money we didn't have."The company established financial goals as markers of its growth. For example, one employee started at a new location with a monthly sales goal they had to meet before they could hire another employee. Then those two employees had to meet a monthly sales goal to hire another employee, and so on.Elting advised entrepreneurs to take this frugal approach as they expand. "Don't spend money you don't have — or if you're spending it, be very careful about what you spend it on," she said.<h2>Reinvest profits into sales and marketing</h2>Lastly, Elting suggested that entrepreneurs who are eager to scale reinvest their profits first into sales and marketing since those are the departments that will bring in new clients and ultimately generate revenue.She added that while other expenses like research and development are important, they should be secondary."It's easy to overspend," she said. "That's the No. 1 reason companies go out of business. They run out of cash."

One of the US's richest self-made women explains how her company established a 'culture of frugality' that withstood the Great Recession

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Over the last three years, I've been taking Spanish lessons from my teacher, Camila. </li><li>Though she's 40 years younger than I am, we have a lot in common. </li></ul>I always look forward to my weekly classes with <a target="_blank" href=" https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/learning/best-online-apps-courses-to-learn-new-language">my Spanish tutor</a>, Camila. We sit opposite each other in the kitchen of the home in Guanajuato, Mexico, where my husband Barry and I live part of the year, drinking tea and conversing in Spanish. We discuss modismos (slang), the subtleties of advanced grammar, pronunciation, and anything else that comes up. When I make a mistake, she notes it on her portable whiteboard and clarifies it later.When we bought our house 18 years ago, I already spoke intermediate-level Spanish, having visited Mexico and other Latin American countries where I took classes off and on. But knowing we'd be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-moving-living-mexico-what-expats-should-stop-doing-2024-1">living in Mexico</a>, and not just visiting, I made a decision: I wanted to become fluent, and ever since then, I've studied consistently with one Spanish teacher or another.After three years of working together, Camila and I are still going strong. Despite the fact that she's 34 and single while I'm 72 and married, we have a lot in common.<h2>We've gotten to know each other during my lessons</h2>During our sessions, we discuss everything, including family, relationships, friendships, our childhoods, gender, travel, books, Mexican culture, my writing, spirituality, and our professional lives.Our careers actually follow parallel lines. I also send her my watercolors on WhatsApp, especially the ones with a cat, since Camila loves her two kittens. She's always interested to hear about the places <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/6-things-to-ask-partner-before-vacationing-with-them-2023-8">my husband and I travel to</a>, and is eager to see our photos. Although she hasn't traveled outside Mexico, she's very aware of other cultures, having taught students ranging in age from 25 to 85 from all over the US, Canada, Japan, and occasionally Europe.While I have twin stepdaughters and grandchildren, neither of us are biological parents. She thinks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-childless-want-husband-family-2023-11">she might want to be a mom</a>, and I think she'd make an excellent one, for the same reason she's such a popular teacher: she's patient, respectful, and a good listener who gives clear, helpful feedback.I once asked Camila if her parents had ever pressured her to marry or have children. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The boom of weight loss drugs is helping more and more people successfully lose body fat.</li><li>Many of these people are discovering new, more confident versions of themselves.</li></ul>Since she started taking <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/how-weight-loss-meds-injections-compare-costs-results-side-effects">semaglutide</a>, and later tirzepatide, last fall, Elizabeth Wood has been through the usual stages that patients can expect on these buzzy new weight loss drugs.She's lost 125 pounds, her appetite is now almost non-existent, and she's stopped buying junk food.A side effect that she didn't expect, however, is that she's arguing with her husband less."We don't have as many petty arguments just because my mood is so improved," she told Business Insider.Weight loss and relationships have always been subtly intertwined. When trying to stick to a<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/weight-loss-work-out-eat-calorie-deficit-not-losing-fat-2022-4"> calorie deficit</a> or meal plan, having the support of those around you can be make or break. Some partners don't like losing their eating or drinking buddy and having indulgent date nights replaced by wholesome hikes, so they may find themselves subconsciously sabotaging their efforts, or consciously cajoling them to give up.But with the boom of appetite-suppressing weight loss drugs like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/buy-compounded-semaglutide-online-risks-wegovy-ozempic-2023-1">semaglutide</a> (marketed as Wegovy but commonly referred to as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/ozempic-celebrities-denied-semaglutide-wegovy-weight-loss-drugs-khloe-kardashian-2023-3">Ozempic</a>) and tirzepatide (Zepbound or Mounjaro), this tension has taken on a whole new dimension. People are navigating lives with new priorities, and<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/pros-cons-ozempic-semaglutide-before-after-2023-4"> drastically smaller appetites</a> and bodies, and their partners are being taken along for the ride.<h2>Losing weight, gaining confidence</h2>Patients can lose more than 20% of their body weight on these life-altering drugs known as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/body-image-distortion-after-weight-loss-common-glp-1-drugs-2023-11">GPL-1 agonists</a>, which are prescribed alongside exercise and healthy diets, although — as was the case for Wood — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/ozempic-alternatives-bariatric-surgery-medication-weight-loss-semaglutide-2023-4">quitting highly processed fast food</a> isn't difficult when you can no longer stomach it.For the 26-year-old who lives in St. Louis, Missouri, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/pros-cons-ozempic-semaglutide-before-after-2023-4">post-GLP-1</a> version of herself is more confident, with a better mood and a higher sex drive."Because I'm happier, things are just better all around," Wood, who has been with her husband Geoff for 12 years and married for nearly two, said.<div type="image" title="Elizabeth Wood and her husband Geoff." height="1631" width="2174" msid="106132936" hostid="261"></div>Dr. Beverly Tchang, an assistant professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College who works with weight loss patients dealing with relationship challenges, told BI that she has seen many people on these drugs, whether single or in a relationship, develop more confidence.In fact, a 2022 study on 1,441 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/treatments/what-is-bariatric-surgery">bariatric surgery</a> patients found that single people who underwent the weight-loss treatment were more than twice as likely to get married within five years. Married people who had the surgery were more than twice as likely to get divorced.The study's lead author Wendy King, a professor of epidemiology at Pitt Public Health, said relationships were a motivating factor for people signing up to take part in her research — in the hopes that the surgery would boost their chances of finding a relationship or improving their existing one.GLP-1s seem to have done that for Wood, who says her newfound confidence means she's now more keen to go on dates with her husband.Ashley Dunham, another <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/ozempic-medication-helping-with-pcos-lose-weight-semaglutide-2023-4">GLP-1 patient</a>, has been given the boost she needed to go out with her girlfriends again. She lost about 105 pounds over 16 months on semaglutide after she started taking it in the summer of 2022."I don't feel embarrassed of how I look when we go out and take group pictures," the 32-year-old, who lives in Jacksonville, Florida, told BI. "So I have been prioritizing time with my friends without our husbands and kids and doing things for myself that I probably before felt a little bit too selfless to do."Dunham said she is experiencing "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pretty-privilege-in-corporate-america-perks-2023-12?r=US&amp;IR=T">skinny privilege</a>" for the first time in years and has more self-worth: "I don't feel guilty for showing up and existing in spaces that I didn't feel like I traditionally belonged."<div type="image" title="Ashley Dunham before and after losing weight." height="1773" width="1773" msid="106132937" hostid="261"></div><h2>Weight loss drugs can lessen desire for food — and sex</h2>Not only do the women's differing social priorities reflect how GLP-1s can affect patients in a variety of ways, their opposing sex drives do, too. Wood didn't notice her libido reduce on the drugs "at all," similarly to patients in the 2022 bariatric surgery study where those who lost the most weight were more likely to feel an increase in sexual desire. But Dunham's desire for sex and food are "pretty much on par."This chimes with previous reporting by Insider on how these drugs that work on the brain's reward circuits can affect desire for not only food and sex but alcohol — so much so that they could one day be used as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/semaglutide-alcohol-addiction-alcoholism-treatment-weight-loss-drug-2022-10">treatment for addiction.</a>"You know you need it and you know you want it, but it's just not there," Dunham said of her desire for sex. "Some days it feels like a mental task instead of a physical and emotional one." With one small-scale study on men without weight issues finding next to no difference in sexual desire after four weeks on GLP-1s, more research on this topic is needed."As much as I love my husband and we've been together for over a decade, it has nothing to do with him and everything to do with me," she said.<div type="image" title="Dunham married her husband Bryan five years ago." height="769" width="1025" msid="106132938" hostid="261"></div><h2>Tempted to try tirzepatide</h2>Either way, Dunham's husband is supportive of her taking semaglutide, not least because restaurants now invite the couple out for complimentary meals since she's shared her GLP-1 journey on TikTok and she's become an influencer. Plus, he likes her new look. If anything, he's more concerned about himself.Both Dunham and Wood said their husbands have been considering taking weight loss medication themselves after seeing their wives' success."The most interesting part of our relationship now is that he just lives off of my leftovers," Dunham said. "I always make the joke, I've lost all this weight, and you've put on a little bit more because you're eating all of the food that I can't eat anymore.""He is very tempted to try it," Wood, said. "He's lost a little bit of weight just based off of my diet, because I'm not cooking the same foods as I was before."<div type="image" title="Elizabeth Wood before and after losing weight." height="1649" width="1319" msid="106132939" hostid="261"></div>Tchang said that when one half of a couple loses weight, it can prompt the other to question their own lifestyle."A spouse might be watching you lose weight and wondering, 'What am I doing wrong? What is she doing right?' And there could be complex dynamics developing there," Tchang said. "We talk to our patients about all of these issues, both before we start the medication, but during the medication as well, and we try to sort out with them, does this still feel like the right direction for you?"For some, the new spotlight on each other's bodies can become uncomfortable.<h2>Weight loss drugs as a life-long commitment</h2>Barry Tacktill, 51, and his wife, Debbie Schubert, both started taking <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/mounjaro-vs-ozempic-side-effects-2023-5">Ozempic</a> in February. While she quit due to the side effects, which can include nausea, diarrhea, and constipation, Tacktill stuck with it and had lost 41 pounds by July, the WSJ reported.Doctors widely consider the<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/semaglutide-take-for-life-or-weight-comes-back-doctor-2022-12"> weight-loss drugs a life-long commitment</a>, and it's common for the pounds to pile back on once a patient reaches their goal weight and stops taking them. For some, the unpleasant side effects or the over<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/eli-lilly-mounjaro-zepbound-approved-weight-loss-stronger-than-wegovy-2023-11"> $1,000</a>-a-month price tag can become too much. All this can put strain on a relationship.Tacktill told the publication that Schubert had made hurtful comments, telling him he may regain the weight and that he "still has a belly," leading him to think his wife may resent him. Schubert said she was sorry to have hurt his feelings and is happy he looks and feels better.As for Wood and Dunham, neither of whom experienced long-term, unpleasant side effects on the drugs, they're working out how to navigate their new lives with GLP-1s likely as a new constant, at least for the foreseeable future."It's been fun to just rediscover how many other activities there are out there that have nothing to do with food and everything to do with making memories," Dunham said.
