Nearly six years after the brutal Nirbhaya gangrape that shook the nation and made unflattering headlines across the world, Indian women continue to be vulnerable on the streets and on trains. In a report by IndiaSpend in 2017, India recorded a sharp 36 percent spike in crimes against women passengers reported on Indian trains, according to <a href="http://164.100.158.235/question/annex/243/Au1584.docx" target="_blank">data </a>submitted by the railway ministry to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. It seems that the Indian Railways' Northeastern division has decided to counter the rising spate of brutalities and make its trains safer for women by installing panic buttons in coaches. The North Eastern Railways (NER) also plans to deploy women police personnel on suburban trains travelling during the night and to recruit women in the Railway Police Force (RPF), according to Sanjay Yadav, the chief press officer of the NER. The proposed panic buttons will accessible throughout the coach and will be directly connected to the guards' compartment. “These buttons, placed at convenient spots for the easy reach of women travelers above the electric switches, when pressed will denote the coach where there is emergency and the railway staff present in the train will be informed to promptly attend to the emergency,” Yadav said. At present, the only options women have is a stop-chain in coaches or a helpline number, via call or message, when faced with uncomfortable situations during their journey. Yadav also said that some other measures – colour-coding the coaches marked for women, installation of CCTV cameras with live feed to the authorities, and installation of wire mesh on windows – were also proposed and that the work on these proposals is “going on”. The panic button in coaches, however, may become a reality this year itself, Yadav said.

Few months back, there was an incident in Delhi, where a female passenger was harassed by a cab driver throughout her ride in central and south Delhi and it took four SOS calls from her before help reached her. It wasn’t about lack of intent that led to the delay but inability to get her exact location and bring it to attention of the cops.

 The reality is that majority of the citizens; women in particular, feel unsafe using public transport in Delhi. With changing mindsets, and a push for citizens to adopt means such as <keyword id="6524998" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cab-aggregators">cab aggregators</keyword>, ride sharing, and car-pooling for their commutes, the need for personal safety measures for women get amplified. 
 
Poor personal safety for women in public areas is a problem. A recent <a href="http://in.breakthrough.tv/askingforit" target="_blank">survey</a> by Breakthrough, a global human rights organization, revealed that sexual harassment in public spaces was an everyday occurrence for more than 90% of women and girls. 
 
According to a 2013 UN study, 99 percent of women in countries such as Egypt say they’ve been harassed, and much of this physical and verbal harassment happens on public transport. 
 
While efficiency and convenience have been well factored into ride sharing and car-pooling efforts, the efforts by car aggregators on security concerns of sharing ride with strangers have still not been addressed comprehensively and firmly. 
 
Steps towards a reliable safety and security system 
 
From our experience, the need of the hour is a prompt, reliable and fool-proof safety and security assistance, which is beyond simply raising an alarm. 
Providing this service is not rocket science but it requires connectivity, a strong tech-backed, trustworthy and capable service. 
 
While it may be true that nearly of the half the crimes are solved by police authorities in NCR and the criminals are brought to books, it may be in some cases the crime could have been averted, if the affected party had access to prompt action and someone who could help. 
 
There are private enterprises that have risen on occasions and are attempting to fill the gap. 
 
Thanks to smartphones, there are a lot of apps that act as an alerting mechanism to family members when one’s security and safety is under threat. 
 
These are great communication mechanisms but in times of panic, the best of us may lose judgment of what may be the right thing to do. At such a time, we need the assistance of someone trained, who is well versed in handling a broad range of threatening situations, from fire-fighting to providing CPR to dispersing mobs to being well versed in combat situations, or as the situation demands. Loved ones though alerted may be ill-equipped to handle these situations. 
 
We go through crisis on a daily basis and if a personal safety and immediate assistance service can make a difference to even one life, it would inevitably create goodwill and help in change the perspective on personal safety and security. 
 
Start with the basics. There should be an ease of reach through an app or a helpline, an embedded GPS that would help determine the victim’s location (again something that was amiss in the incident cited above). 
 
A command and control center, which is able to guide callers until live help in the form of a trained responders team reaches, can also be of great help. It is also important to partner them with government authorities, police, hospitals that are able to help in such situations. Why personal safety measures are critical in the age of cab aggregators

Mumbai, Dec 26 () Around a third of urban Indians (29 per cent) feel safety for women should be the country's focus in 2020, a survey has revealed.
 Less than half of this number feel the economic condition (12 per cent) and job market (11 per cent) should receive attention in the new year, according to the survey by the UK-headquartered online market research and data analytics firm YouGov.
 Data for this survey was collected online by YouGov Omnibus among around 1,011 respondents in India between December 10-13, 2019 using YouGov's panel of over 8 million people worldwide.
 Not only do people feel women safety needs prominence, close to half of the people (45 per cent) said it did not improve in 2019.
 Although both men and women felt this equally (43 per cent men and 48 per cent women), there was a difference of opinion amongst the age groups, it said.
 A higher number of Gen X (52 per cent) felt that measures for women safety did not show any advancement in 2019 as compared to the millennials (40 per cent), it added.
 Moreover, many felt that economic conditions (39 per cent), political situations (35 per cent) and job scenario in the country (35 per cent) did not see any improvement in 2019.
 However, over a third (35 per cent) said technological developments witnessed a positive shift in the past year.
 Looking back at the past year, YouGov data showed that although happenings from the sports and entertainment world remained in the public eye throughout 2019, politics took precedence over them and the top three highlights of the year belonged to this area.
 When asked what according to them was the most important political event of 2019, the revoking of Article 35A emerged on top (with 28 per cent saying it was the most important event).
 Similarly, for the most important cultural and sports events, 'the Ambani wedding' and 'FRIENDS' 25th Anniversary' and 'India's performance in ICC World Cup 2019' came on top, respectively.
 However, when asked to choose the highlight of 2019 from a combined list of 20 of these political, cultural and sports events, a quarter (24 per cent) chose the revoking of Article 35A as the spotlight event.
 This was followed by the Ayodhya case hearing (18 per cent) and Bharatiya Janata Party's victory in the general elections (17 per cent), it added.
 Looking ahead at 2020, one in five (19 per cent) Indians said the country's space project Chandrayaan 3 will be the biggest event of the new year.
 Another 16 per cent think the T20 World cup will be a highlighting event, with a higher number of male than female respondents (20 per cent vs 11 per cent) saying this.
 Some even thought the slow GDP growth (14 per cent), Nasa's Mars exploration program (12 per cent), India's smart city mission 2.0 (10 per cent) and the Delhi State Elections (9 per cent) will take centre stage in the new year.
 A smaller proportion felt global events such as 2020 Tokyo Olympics (9 per cent) and the US Presidential Elections (8 per cent) will be the defining moments of 2020. SM ABM

 A bunch of 12 to 14-year old girls of <keyword id="6361831" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="dharavi">Dharavi</keyword>, who have been fondly nicknamed the ‘<keyword id="3315631" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dharavi-coders">Dharavi coders</keyword>,’ are driving change with the help of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=technology&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">technology</a>. 
 
An initiative which was started by filmmaker Nawneet Ranjan in 2014, who permanently moved to Mumbai from San Francisco after being moved by the lack of inspiration or ambition in the lives of the girls who lived in these slums and who witnessed daily occurings of starvation, injustices and domestic violence. 
 
He vowed to do something about it and decided to instill in them the ability of dream and have oodles of confidence by introducing them to computers. As a part of Dharavi Diary of 2014, a slum innovation project that he began, he ensured that the girls were taught coding through the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Learning Program. 
 
Later, they also used an open source app development tool, MIT App Inventor, to create their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=apps&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">apps</a>. 
 The initiative has paid off tremendously as the girls have developed a bunch of <keyword id="6354741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apps">apps</keyword> that tackle most of the everyday problems faced by the residents living in the slums. 
 
For instance, they innovated an app called Paani which alerts the slum residents when it is their turn to collect water from the community tap, making the lives of the slum dwellers a whole lot easier as they didn’t have to waste time standing long hours in a queue every day. 
 
 
 
That’s not all. They also have an app focusing on women safety. Called, Women Fight Back, the app has a distress alarm, location mapping, SMS alert and a feature that helps one select emergency contact numbers. 
 
Some of the girls have built another app that intends to make Education simpler. Instead of the traditional teaching in classrooms route, the app teaches subjects like Science, English and Math through experiential activities such as taking photographs of objects to learn what it is called. 
 
They haven’t stopped there. 
 
Another app teaches kids the importance of segregating waste and waste management in general. It also gives ideas to recycle items to create new products. 
 
What started as a small project with just 15 girls has today become a project which ahs roped in 200 students, including boys- giving the children of Dharavi an opportunity to dream. That too in just two years. 
 
A recent fire in the slum in January however caused serious damage and led to the children losing their mobiles, laptops apart from everyday essentials like blankets, clothes, books, utensils and beds. 
 It’s time these young <keyword id="3315632" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="tech-developers">tech developers</keyword> need help. Nawneet Ranjan himself is urging people to.

She was riding as a passenger in a silver Toyota when Isaacs passed her on the interstate in Kentucky and called the police, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-hand-gestures-domestic-abuse-rescue-teen-in-kentucky-2021-11?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">Insider previously reported</a>.61-year-old James Herbert Brick was arrested by authorities on the same day. Brick, who was traveling with the teenager at the time she was found, was later charged with unlawful imprisonment and possession of content showing sexual activity by a minor, the Laurel County Sheriff's Office said in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/laurelcountysheriff/posts/256143486545841">statement on their Facebook page on November 5</a>.According to this statement, Isaacs called 911 after he "noticed a female passenger in the vehicle making hand gestures that are known on the social media platform <keyword id="11894125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tiktok" source="Orion">TikTok</keyword>." It stated that "the complainant advised 911 that the female appeared to be in distress." On November 8, Deputy Laurel County Sheriff Gilbert Acciardo <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyfswEFXJX8&amp;ab_channel=FOX5LasVegasegas">said in a televised statement</a> that the people in the car behind Brick saw the girl's hand gestures "and within recognizing that signal they notified 911."
