New Delhi: <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">Foreign investors</keyword> pulled out a massive Rs 94,000 crore (around USD 11.2 billion) from the Indian <keyword id="19925636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-market" source="keywords">stock market</keyword> in October, making it the worst-ever month in terms of outflows, triggered by the elevated valuation of domestic equities and attractive valuations of <keyword id="20295104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chinese-stocks" source="keywords">Chinese stocks</keyword>. Before this, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) withdrew Rs 61,973 crore from equities in March 2020. The latest outflow came after a nine-month high investment of Rs 57,724 crore in September 2024. Since June, FPIs have consistently bought equities after withdrawing Rs 34,252 crore in April-May. Overall, FPIs have been net buyers in 2024, except for January, April and May, data with the depositories showed. Looking ahead, the trajectory of global events like geopolitical developments, interest rate movements, progress in the Chinese economy and the outcome of the US Presidential election will play a crucial role in shaping future foreign investment in <keyword id="20014814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-equities" source="keywords">Indian equities</keyword>, Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director, Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India, said. On the domestic front, key indicators like inflation trajectory, corporate earnings, and the impact of festive season demand will also be closely watched by FPIs as they assess opportunities in the Indian market, he added. According to the data, FPIs recorded a net outflow of Rs 94,017 crore in October. The intensity of net outflows could be gauged from the fact that except for one day, FPIs were net sellers throughout the month, bringing their total investment for 2024 down to Rs 6,593 crore. This relentless selling resulted in about an 8 per cent decline in benchmark indices from their peaks. Several factors contributed towards this massive withdrawal of foreign capital from the Indian equity markets in October. The major among them is the elevated valuations of Indian equities. This has triggered a shift in investments towards China, where valuations are currently more attractive. Additionally, a series of stimulus measures, aimed at bolstering Chinese economic growth has made Chinese equities increasingly appealing to global investors, Srivastava said. Despite the massive FPI selling in financials, this sector is resilient since the valuations are fair and every selling is being absorbed by DIIs and individual investors, particularly HNIs, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services, said. In addition, FPIs pulled out Rs 4,406 crore from the debt general limit and invested Rs 100 crore from the debt Voluntary Retention Route (VRR) during the period under review. So far this year, FPIs invested Rs 1.06 lakh crore in the debt market.

It has been edited for length and clarity.By the time my son was in seventh grade, he was struggling with an addiction to technology. As a psychologist, I had questioned in the past whether phones and computers could truly be addictive. But when I saw my son experiencing withdrawal symptoms and lying to get more screen time, I realized they could be — and it was happening right in my house.Once I realized my son had a serious challenge, my wife and I made a plan to limit his use of technology, which included <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kid-screen-addiction-child-psychologist-parent-tips-2024-9">locking up all devices in the house at night</a>. But we faced another challenge: school.At my son's school, like most these days, all students had laptops. There are a lot of benefits to using <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parenting-screen-time-tech-free-school-2024-5">technology in the classroom</a>, but for some kids, like my son, having a computer isn't an advantage.<h2 id="6204326c-79c5-4249-9b7c-e15f5d84b906">We started with an open conversation with the school</h2>I knew I wanted my son to have less access to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-technology-is-shaping-the-future-of-education-2017-12">technology at school</a>. But I also realized that by removing the thing that was challenging (the computer), I was creating a whole set of new challenges. Since I'm not in the classroom, I probably didn't even know what some of those unintended consequences were.My wife and I didn't know what the right answer was and didn't claim to, so we asked for a meeting with the school. My son has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-adult-adhd-autism-diagnosis-changed-life-neurodivergent-2023-12">autism and ADHD</a>, so he has an individualized education program (IEP). That gave us a big advantage because the school had to listen to our concerns. Plus, we already had an established means of communicating with them and trust with my son's educational team.<h2 id="268895a0-ca6e-4701-8f44-b4586ba9427b">We realized we needed a fluid approach</h2>At home, we could simply lock up computers and phones when our son had reached his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/broke-parenting-rules-allowed-unlimited-screen-time-2024-2">screen time limit</a>. For school, we knew it wouldn't necessarily be as simple.Instead, we came to his teachers with a statement: We want to limit his access to his computer as much as possible while still supporting his learning. We asked what sorts of other systems we could implement within that framework. The details varied from class to class.<h2 id="318d14a9-c34a-4d8b-adbe-91924dac3017">We went back to paper and pencil</h2>Whenever possible, my son did his assignments with paper and pencil. For math problems or essay writing, this was fine. Yet we soon found there were assignments he simply couldn't <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/students-caught-using-chatgpt-ai-assignment-teachers-debate-2024-9">do without a computer</a> — like watching a given video and writing a response.In those situations, my son got access to his computer, with monitoring. For most of the day, his computer stayed in the resource teacher's room, and he only got it when he absolutely needed it.<h2 id="071fcc00-5e80-434d-9d3b-5992a6ebccd8">Implementing this was hard, but worth it</h2>I knew reducing the reliance on tech at school wouldn't be easy, yet I was still surprised at just how difficult it was. We had a huge advantage: because of my son's IEP, we had a resource teacher we could always reach out to. Even so, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-screen-time-expert-limits-kids-screen-time-use-2023-2">limiting computer time</a> required an enormous amount of communication with teachers, as well as adjusting on the fly based on the type of assignments my son had and how he was managing his tech addiction at a given time.Today, my son is doing a lot better with his recovery from tech addiction. He's in ninth grade now, and he has shown he can be trusted to use computers responsibly. Because of that, we haven't had to talk with his high school teachers about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/how-much-screen-time-is-too-much">limiting technology</a>. We may need to in the future though.As a professional, it is a bit concerning to me how hard it was to ease off technology use in school. There are an increasing number of kids who are addicted to technology, like my son. At the same time, we're making these same devices a key ingredient of learning. It's a very complex problem, and it will take us some time as a society to figure out how to solve it. In the meantime, a lot falls on parents and teachers to find the right answer for individual kids.

I'm a child psychologist, and I asked my son's teachers to limit his use of technology at school. Here's what happened.

July's here, and as we inch closer to the budget, which is set to be presented around the latter half of July, there is much talk about how it will affect our pockets. Reports suggest the government is considering raising the <keyword id="20429578" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="standard-deduction" source="keywords">standard deduction</keyword> threshold from existing Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000, amidst other things. The most common wish for a salaried employee is to reduce the income tax rates across all slabs, but at the moment, this seems unlikely. That aside, we decode the common man's wish list and what they look forward to in terms of <keyword id="22225988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-taxes" source="keywords">income taxes</keyword> as the Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> drafts the budget. <h2>Wish 1: Raise the standard deduction to Rs 1 lakh</h2>A standard deduction is a fixed amount that you can deduct from your taxable income right away, to reduce your overall tax liability. You do not need to furnish any proofs for this amount. Currently, this stands at Rs 50,000, under both old and new tax regimes. Raising this threshold to Rs 1,00,000 will mean more disposable income in your hands. And as per the policy experts, this is the most likely change that we can expect under the new budget. <h2>Wish 2: Increase the <keyword id="20228341" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="basic-exemption-limit" source="keywords">basic exemption limit</keyword> in new tax regime</h2>As per EY's pre-budget expectation report, an increase in the basic exemption limit from the present Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 5,00,000 would immensely benefit the common man. Earlier, this limit was set at Rs 2,50,000. Note that unless you specifically opt for the old regime, the new tax regime is considered as your default choice starting 2023. If your annual income is equal to, or falls below this basic exemption limit, you do not have to pay any income tax. <h2>Wish 3: Increase tax-free limit of LTCG gains </h2>At present, if you sell any equity mutual fund unit or share after more than 12 months of holding it, you'll have to pay a 10% long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax. However, within one financial year, long-term capital gains below Rs 1,00,000 are tax-exempt. As EY's report notes, raising this extant tax-free limit to Rs 2 lakh would be beneficial, especially in boosting long-term investing sentiment in the country. But will this come true? Only Nirmala Sitharaman knows! <h2>Wish 4: Consider some tier-2 cities as metros for HRA exemption </h2>Residents of Gurugram, Noida, Bengaluru, listen up! HRA, or House rent allowance is a crucial component of our salary, and hence, our tax planning as well. You can get HRA exemption on the lowest amount amidst these 3: 1. Actual HRA received 2. 50% of salary for metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai) 3. 40% of salary for non-metro cities 4. Rent paid- 10% of salary But its no secret that residents of nearby cities like Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, or rapidly developing urban hubs like Pune, Ahmedabad, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Thane bear the brunt of sky-high residential rents that takes a huge toll on their monthly income. Yet, they cannot claim 50% of their salary for HRA exemption. Since these cities has been classified as a non-metro, residents can claim a maximum of 40% of their salary as exemption. In case rent exceeds Rs 1,00,000 annually, you are also required to furnish the PAN details of landlord, along with a formal rental agreement. Consider this. You live in Delhi, and have an annual income of Rs 10,00,000. For HRA purposes, you can claim exemption of up to Rs 5,00,000, since Delhi is considered a metro. But, if you live in Ghaziabad, or Noida, the limit available to you sharply falls down to Rs 4,00,000. This budget, as reports note, considering these cities as metros for tax purposes would provide some relief to the common man's pocket. Per a recent report by ANAROCK research, the top 7 cities in the country (Mumbai metropolitan region, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR, Chennai and Kolkata) saw an average price rise between 13-39% on a yearly basis. In fact, it was Hyderabad recorded the highest yearly price rise in residential property last quarter, jumping by as much as 39%. <h2>Wish 5 : Enhance exemption limits under the old regime</h2>The list is endless, but so are our wishes! Experts are also suggesting an enhancement in the existing limit for deduction towards interest on housing loan for self-occupied house. From its present limit of Rs 2 lakh, it should be taken to Rs 3 lakh. Also, the Rs 2-lakh cap on set off of house property loss against other heads in the same year should be done away with. For senior citizens, there should also be greater clarity on how funds received from <keyword id="19919089" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nps" source="keywords">NPS</keyword> (National Pension System) via the systematic lumpsum withdrawal plan should be taxed. Well, we can only hope some, if not all of these wishes come true when finance minister presents the union budget in the parliament this month.

Moody's withdraws rating of Kalyan Jewellers

This led both private equity giants to <a href="https://www.breit.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/33/2022/12/Notice-to-Stockholders-December-1-2022.pdf">pause redemptions</a> after monthly and quarterly withdrawal limits were reached.Investors in and outside of the funds took notice, as has, apparently, the SEC. The regulatory agency reached out to both Blackstone and Starwood this month to assess the market impact and specific circumstances of the pauses, according to Bloomberg, which cited multiple anonymous sources. The agency was looking into how the firms served redemptions to their clients, and if any affiliates of the two companies sold their shares before the clients, according to one of the sources. The inquiries are not indications that either firm is under investigation or committed any wrongdoing, the report said.Representatives for Blackstone and the SEC declined to comment to Insider. A spokesperson for Starwood did not return requests for comment on Friday.<h2>Individual investors deal a blow to Blackstone's stock</h2>Blackstone launched the Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust, known in the industry as BREIT, in 2017 as a way to cater to rich individuals — beyond the firm's typical large institutional client — who were in search of better returns in what was then a near-zero-interest rate world. By the assets that flowed into the fund, it was a success. It has amassed $68 billion, and last year the firm looked to replicate the fund for private-credit investors with the Blackstone Private Credit Fund, known as BCRED.But this year has brought challenges as the real estate market sours and more investors are turning bearish. Bill Katz, a research analyst at Credit Suisse who tracks Blackstone, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackstone-rare-sell-rating-bcred-breit-2022-11">raised concern over the funds' growth</a> in a report to clients and downgraded the stock to the equivalent of a "sell" rating. Blackstone shares are down 21% in the past month, compared with a 3% drop for the S&amp;P 500.In recent statements to Insider, a Blackstone representative said BREIT returns have been strong. The fund has posted a return of 8.4% so far this year and a three-year annualized return of 14.9%, according to its <a href="https://www.breit.com/performance/">website</a>, representing respectable performance to some analysts."In response to BREIT redemption limits, our experts agree that the fund is delivering on its mandate from both a performance and liquidity perspective," Morgan Stanley research analysts said in a report to clients on Friday.

The decision of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to withdraw Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes from circulation will not have any major impact on <keyword id="47316" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-demand" source="Orion">gold demand</keyword> and also on the <keyword id="109488" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rupee-value" source="Orion">rupee value</keyword>, an expert said on Saturday. According to the expert, the number of Rs 2,000 denomination notes in circulation (or stocked in lockers) is not huge. "The number of Rs 2,000 currency notes in circulation is not large. This is not like <keyword id="3315394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="demonetisation" source="Orion">demonetisation</keyword> of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes that happened in 2016," Hareesh V., Head of Commodities Research, Geojit Financial Services told IANS. According to Hareesh, there are other investment avenues and further, there is a limit for using hard cash to purchase gold. "The RBI decision will also not have any bearing on the gold/silver futures," he said. The RBI on Friday said Rs 2,000 denomination notes to the value of Rs 3.62 lakh crore were in circulation on March 31, 2023. Hareesh said even if people decide to convert their Rs 2,000 into US dollars, there will not be any major impact on the value of the Indian rupee. "As witnessed during demonetisation, we expect the deposit accretion of banks could improve marginally in the near term. This will ease the pressure on deposit rate hikes and could also result in moderation in short-term interest rates," Karthik Srinivasan, Senior Vice President Financial Sector Ratings, ICRA said. The request was sent outside regular working hours.<h2>Lawmakers, donors, and students have criticized Harvard's response</h2>The collection of student organizations quickly faced backlash after they released their statement on October 8 blaming Israel for the attacks by Hamas. Business leaders including hedge-fund manager <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-ackman-harvard-release-names-students-blaming-israel-violence-hamas-2023-10">Bill Ackman</a> have asked for a list of the names of the organizatons' members so that they can avoid hiring them.
