<ul><li>Earnings season will begin next week with the results of major IT companies -- TCS on April 11 and Infosys on April 13.</li><li>Digital transformation deals continue to boost IT sector’s growth along with rupee depreciation in the recent months benefiting the sector.</li><li>However, profit margins of these companies are expected to be under pressure because of increase in employee salaries and record hiring.</li></ul>The March quarter earnings season will begin next week with the results of major information technology (IT) companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on April 11 and Infosys on April 13. Most analysts believe March is a seasonally weak quarter for IT companies and they expect moderate earnings growth amid margin pressures. The profit margins of IT companies are expected to be under pressure because of increase in employee salaries and record hiring. “Sequential growth for Indian IT will be moderate in March 2022 quarter and in line with historical seasonal trends. Margins will remain under pressure resulting from elevated wage increases, onsite as well as offshore,” said Kotak Institutional Equities. The entire IT sector is struggling to retain employees including top five companies. There could be moderate risk to demand as fallout of the Russia-Ukraine imbroglio starts impacting key economies. Nonetheless, we believe double-digit growth is feasible for many,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Higher employee cost and shortage of skilled talent will remain the key challenges in the short term for IT companies. Profit margins of IT companies must be under pressure for January-March quarter due to record hiring and salary hikes

<ul><li><keyword id="10862" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> — the fourth largest IT services company in India — is planning to promote its 5,000 employees, thanks to the increasing attrition rate during the second quarter. </li><li>The company also rolled out a retention bonus of nearly ₹100,000 to its fresh campus hires. It also offered bonuses to employees with upto three years of experience. </li><li>Wipro added nearly 6,603 employees during the second quarter, taking the headcount to 181,453 from 174,850 in the last quarter. </li><li>The software major reported a net profit of ₹25.5 billion for the second quarter of 2019-20 fiscal. </li></ul>Wipro — the fourth largest IT services company in India — is planning to promote 5,000 of its employees, to check its increasing attrition rate. The technology giant recorded an attrition rate of 17% for the quarter ending in September. “Attrition (rate) has been a good story for us as compared to others. We have given salary hikes and now are looking at a huge number of promotions in the coming quarter. Around 5,000 people in the experience range of five to eight years will get promoted," Saurabh Govil, HR head, Wipro <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/wipro-plans-to-promote-around-5-000-employees-to-check-attrition-119102100017_1.html">told </a>Business Standard. The company also rolled out retention bonus of nearly ₹100,000 to its fresh campus hires and those with upto three years of experience. “Junior-level attrition is slightly higher than the company average. However, it is lower among performers as they get higher bonuses, incentives and salary hikes," Govil added. While auto and textile sectors face troubled waters leading to job losses, the IT sector seems to be rebounding with a positive hiring sentiment. Wipro added nearly 6,603 employees during the second quarter, taking the headcount to 181,453 from 174,850 in the last quarter. The three IT giants — <keyword id="6357150" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs">TCS</keyword>, Wipro and <keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> — collectively hired 28,157 employees in the quarter ending September. This is a 59% jump from that of the June quarter, which recorded a net hiring of 16,687 employees, Businessline <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/tcs-infosys-wipro-hire-28000-employees-september-quarter/story/385196.html">reported</a>. Wipro is also planning to hire more consultants so as to drive sales in the coming quarters. “We are hiring more people in this consulting space. It is paying us back, well," he said. Wipro is giving promotions and bonuses to check growing attrition

Shares of IT services major Wipro fell 3.50 per cent on Wednesday after the company posted a 2.17 per cent dip in consolidated net profit for December 2019 quarter.
 The scrip declined 3.50 per cent to close at Rs 248.15 on the BSE. During the day, it dropped 4 per cent to Rs 246.65.
 At the NSE, shares dipped 3.49 per cent to close at Rs 248.20.
 In terms of volume, 3.66 lakh shares of the company were traded on the BSE during the day, while over 1 crore shares changed hands on the NSE. 
 The company declared its October-December quarter earnings post market hours on Tuesday.
 It posted a 2.17 per cent dip in consolidated net profit at Rs 2,455.9 crore for December 2019 quarter and estimated up to 2 per cent revenue growth for the fourth quarter.
 Wipro's net profit, attributable to shareholders, in the year-ago period was at Rs 2,510.4 crore.
 Its revenue from operations grew 2.7 per cent to Rs 15,470.5 crore during the period under review from Rs 15,059.5 crore in the same quarter last year (as per Ind-AS). 
 Wipro, which gets bulk of its topline from IT services, said it expects revenues from that unit to be in the range of USD 2,095 million to USD 2,137 million in the March quarter. 
 This translates into a sequential growth of flat to 2 per cent. SUM

Cybersecurity has been a central concern for many companies as the number of malware attacks during the lockdown have been on the rise. <ul><li>IT major Wipro’s first quarter net profits grew by 12.6% at ₹23.9 billion as compared to that of the same quarter last year, which was at ₹21.2 billion </li><li>The company’s revenues for the first quarter of 2019-20 grew by 5.3% to ₹147.2 billion as compared to last year’s first quarter revenues at ₹139.8 billion. </li><li>However, the operating margins for the IT services segment had a flat growth at 18.4%, growing by a mere 0.8%. </li></ul>IT major Wipro’s first quarter net profits grew by 12.6% to ₹23.9 billion as compared to that of the same quarter last year. This was better than the 11% profit growth clocked by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys’ 5%. Wipro said it expects its IT services revenue will grow, at best, 2% in the following three months ending September, similar to that of Infosys. Infosys had projected a total growth 8.5% to 10% for the full year ending March 2020, which would imply a compounded quarterly growth 1.6% to 1.9%, according to a BOBCAPS research report. TCS to hinted at a double-digit growth for the year. Wipro’s revenue for the first quarter of 2019-20 grew by 5.3% to ₹147.2 billion but the margin in the IT services segment flattened at 18.4%. “We had a slower start to the year, we however remain focused on our operations and continue to invest in talent and capabilities for the future,” said Jatin Dalal, Chief Financial Officer of Wipro. New deals All three major IT service providers from India have bagged new clients helping their outlook going forward. “Our efforts on client mining have resulted in an addition of three customers in more than $100 million bucket. We will continue to build differentiated capabilities to drive business transformation for our customers by investing in our big bets,” said Abidali Z. Neemuchwala, CEO and Executive Director at Wipro. TCS and Infosys too, announced big signings last week along with their quarterly numbers. TCS bagged new deals worth $5.7 billion in the last quarter while Infosys set a new record for itself with new deals worth $2.7 billion. However, the good news for investors is that Wipro plans to continue with its proposed buyback offer of 323 billion shares, which was approved by the board in April, after a green light from market regulator SEBI. The final shareholder approval came in on June 21. Investors may have been worried that the company may rollback the plan after the government decided to impose a 20% tax on share buyback because companies were using share buybacks to give money back to shareholders instead of dividends, which are also taxable in India.
