According to a <a href="https://krebsonsecurity.com/2019/04/experts-breach-at-it-outsourcing-giant-wipro/">report</a> by KrebsOnSecurity, a phishing attacks on Wipro Ltd’s computer systems used employee accounts to again access to customer information. And, at least 11 other companies were attacked as well according to evidence found in file folders on the back-end infrastructure of the intrusion. But, the exact objective of the attacks is still unclear. The company <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/wipro-confirms-data-breach-ahead-of-its-q4-results-today-1555397106230.html">confirmed</a> the report, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/wipro-hit-by-advanced-phishing-attack/articleshow/68915021.cms">released</a> a security patch and has hired its own independent forensics firms to help with the investigation. But, Wipro Ltd has refrained from sharing any details about how many customers’ data and employees’ accounts were left vulnerable.

 Wipro Ltd system were apparently being used as ‘jumping-off’ points for digital fishing expeditions gaining access to Wipro Ltd systems. The employees of those systems have since been quarantined and Wipro Ltd claims that the malware attack should not have any ‘material impact’ on its financials. To know or not to know? While it has been established that Wipro Ltd did not know about the breach some time in advance, the ongoing debate is whether they knew about it a week or months in advance. KrebsOnSecurity asserts that the phishing attack was a multi-month process from a state-sponsored attackers. Wirpo’s COO Bhanumurthy BM, on the other hand, claims that the alerts were only detected a week ago.

Wipro confirms phishing attack on its system — 11 other companies unknown

Bengaluru, June 8 (IANS) In an effort to help customers accelerate their Cloud journey, Wipro on Monday announced a collaboration with IBM to assist its customers embrace a seamless and secure Hybrid Cloud by launching a Wipro IBM Novus Lounge here. Through this alliance, Wipro will develop hybrid cloud offerings to help businesses migrate, manage and transform mission-critical workloads and applications, with security across public or private cloud and on-premises IT environments. Pune, May 10 () IT Services firm Tech Mahindra hasbeen issued a notice by the office of the Labour Commissioner,Pune, in Maharashtra on a complaint that the company hadreduced salaries of its employees to maintain "profitability'in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.A similar notice was issued earlier this month toanother IT firm, Wipro Technologies Ltd, on a complaintalleging that the firm was benching its employees.National Information Technology Employees Senate(NITES), an organisation working for the welfare and benefitsof employees in IT industry, had approached the LabourCommissioner's Office, claiming that they have receivedcomplaints from employees of Tech Mahindra, Pune, regardingthe reduction in salaries to maintain the "profitability ofthe business" under the COVID-19 pandemic."The company had also notified its employees throughan email on May 6 that the shift allowance, which is betweenRs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per employee, will be stopped from May1," the complaint letter from NITES reads.The application further claimed that because of thisdecision, payment of over 13,000 employees of Tech Mahindra isreduced.The NITES sought appropriate legal action against TechMahindra stating that the firm has violated the Maharashtragovernment's directions, rules and regulations.In a notice issued on the same date, officials in theLabour Commissioner's Office directed the firm to go throughthe state government's resolution dated March 31, 2020, andtake appropriate steps and release the salaries for March andApril and to inform the labour commissioner's office.The notice, signed by Nikhil Walke, Assistant LabourCommissioner, asked the firm not to terminate employees orreduce the salaries, and further stated that otherwise legalaction will be taken.Tech Mahindra Spokesperson said, "The shift allowancepaid for hardship due to travel to work at odd hours and otherout of pocket expenses, continues to be paid to all TechMahindra associates, who are coming to the office or are atclient locations as per policy."Our focus remains to ensure the well-being of ourassociates, customers and partner eco-system while maintainingbusiness continuity".Meanwhile, in its notice dated May 1 to WiproTechnologies Ltd on an NITES complaint that the company wasbenching its employees, the Pune Labour Commissioner Officeasked the IT firm to respond and not terminate any employees.Harpreet Saluja, general secretary, NITES, said theyhad approached the labour commissioner's office after theyreceived complaints from employees of WIPRO BPO, located inHinjewadi regarding employees being put on the bench tomaintain profitability."The company also notified the employees on April 23that they are on the bench with immediate effect. Because ofthis (the decision of the company) the pay and jobs of morethan 300 employees are at risk," the complaint reads.A statement from Wipro Limited stated that thespeculation related to the workforce is unfounded and has nobasis."Wipro categorically denies these rumours. There areno salary cuts for employees who are in between projects andare awaiting new assignments. Also, the company wants toreiterate that there are no retrenchment plans. Pune:Labour office notice to Tech Mahindra on alleged pay cuts

BANGALORE: <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>’s <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> in new technologies and platforms have generated more than ten times returns since <keyword id="197349" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rishad-Premji">Rishad Premji</keyword> has taken over as head of strategy at the nation’s third largest software exporter. 
 Rishad, son of <keyword id="6364480" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chairman">chairman</keyword> Azim <keyword id="6420349" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Premji">Premji</keyword>, has led the company to also invest in two startups, the valuation of one of them has more than tripled in just 12 months. 
 
“These investments have helped different business units keep up with growth numbers and helped drive growth and we believe we have generated over 10x returns over the last three years (considering if we had to buy these technologies now),” said an executive from Wipro’s strategy division. 
 
The executive declined to share details of the investment, but said it could be millions of dollars over the past 36 months. 
 
The company plans to invest more in innovative ideas through a $100 million corporate venture fund. Rishad Premji has been named to spearhead that venture. 
 
Some experts say the returns on corporate venture funds aren’t usually as high as that of independent venture funds, which makes this performance of Wipro “extremely good”. 
 “Certainly, a 10 times return is extremely good from the perspective of financial returns of either independent or corporate venturing funds,” said Josh Lerner, professor of <keyword id="48051" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-banking">investment banking</keyword> and head of the Entrepreneurial Management unit at <keyword id="70846" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-Business-School">Harvard Business School</keyword>. 
 
Wipro declined to provide details of its investment. “Any data points that are being talked about or written are all speculation and cannot be relied upon,” it said in a statement. 
 Rishad Premji joined Wipro in 2007 as business head of the vertical that provides services to the banking and <keyword id="6354241" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Financial-Services">financial services</keyword> sectors. He was elevated to the current role of head of strategy four years later. Under his watch, Wipro has backed companies in technologies that are called disruptive because they are capable of disrupting the existing market, as well as picking stakes in US-based startups focused in data analytics and machine-to-machine learning. 
 
He has been assisted by Anil Raibagi, head of mergers and acquisitions. 
 
Wipro’s $5-million (about Rs 30 crore at current exchange rate) investment in US-based Axeda in June 2013 underlines the team’s successful bets. When Wipro first made an investment to pick a stake of close to 8%, Axeda was valued at $50 million. In July this year, Nasdaqlisted PTC acquired Axeda for $170 million in cash, taking the value of Wipro’s ownership to more than three times its initial investment. 
 
PTC and Axeda declined to comment whether Wipro will exit the investment. Wipro said any decision will be taken once the transaction is concluded. 
 
“Since he (Rishad Premji) took charge, the strategy team (which includes Wipro’s M&amp;A division) has been more proactive than being very reactive,” said an executive directly familiar with the changes. “Initially, we (Wipro) were dependent on investment bankers to make the pitch on what the company should invest in. After he joined, investment banks just give the names and in some case we don’t even require them, as internally we evaluate which companies we should invest.” 
 
On partnerships, Anurag Srivastava, who is overseeing the firm’s youngest business unit called Change the Business, has helped Wipro partner with at least 30 startups since 2011. One such partnership of Wipro is with Pingar, a New Zealand-based text analytics company. 
 
Over the last 12 months, Pingar has been helping Wipro’s existing and new clients on “auto-tagging and classification capabilities across multiple enterprise content management solutions”. 
 
“Typically, corporate venture funds have both strategic and financial goals. Strategic goals may be identifying potential acquisition targets, getting a window on new technologies, or paving the way for joint ventures,” said Lerner of HBS. “These strategic returns can often be very important, but are more difficult to measure, especially for outsiders.”

"Developed as part of the first phase of Project lnthanon, the solution will enable de-centralised interbank real-time gross settlement (RTGS) using wholesale Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) to prove that the technology can perform key functionalities of payment and enhance efficiency," Wipro's statement on May 7 said. Project lnthanon is an initiative led by the <keyword id="338583" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank-of-Thailand">Bank of Thailand</keyword>, launched in August 2018. The first phase focussed on rolling out a payment infrastructure, followed by the blockchain initiatives. " The prototype has demonstrated the merits of blockchain technology adoption for making interbank payments more efficient," Krishnakumar N Menon, Vice President and Blockchain Theme Leader, Wipro said. In April 2018, the Reserve Bank of India revealed its plan to issue a digital currency, CBDC, while forcing a bunch of cryptocurrency exchanges operating in the country to shut shop. Wipro bets big on convergence of 5G and edge computing in India

BP, world's leading oil and gas company, has refurbished its outsourcing strategy. As a result, it has revamped its multi-million dollar contract with Wipro, as reported by ET. 
 
BP, in its capacity as one of the supermajors, spends around $1 billion on technology per year, and is a large customer of India's information technology industry, which stands at $146-billion. BP, however, has now decided to reduce the number of outsourcing companies that it hands out its business to. 
 
Wipro, on the other hand, currently gets well over $100 million of its annual business from the British company, and with a revamped contract, is likely to get at least $100 million more business over the next 2-3 years. 
 
"BP has decided to consolidate the number of vendors it does business with - for them at this point it makes sense to go with 2-3 vendors, rather than 5-6 different vendors, given the current pressures on technology spending," said one of the sources. "As a result, some vendors such as Wipro, IBM and Infosys have gained, while others have lost out," the person continued. 
 
BP spokesperson said, "BP continuously reviews how we source our IT services. Currently, there is a focus on 5 strategic suppliers: Infosys, Wipro, IBM, HP, and T-Systems."

Wipro to get at least $100 million more with renewed BP contract

In a bid to address evolving customer needs in a rapidly changing technology landscape, India’s third largest software exporter, <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, overhauled its internal training framework and launched technical programmes over the past one year. 
 
The company is re-skilling its staff in newer areas of technology, especially digital, with a focus on commoditised service lines. 
 
Wipro CEO TK Kurien, who undertook the revamping of the framework, also wants to create a leaner and multi-skilled taskforce. 
For this, Wipro also launched at least three technical training programmes over the past year. 
 
The three new programmes - ACME (All-round Capability Model of Excellence), UpScale and Cutting Edge - are part of a drive to skill in multiple areas, in contrast to the past in which impetus was mostly on learning one skill well. 
 
Wipro's head of talent transformation Vishwas Santurkar told Economic Times that ACME had five dimensions of skills. “Technology is one obviously. Second is domain. The third dimension is functional areas. The quality processes, especially with Agile methodology coming in, the Agile methodologies and those areas is a fourth dimension which we feel is very important for an employee to learn. And the fifth is behavioural skills," Santurkar, a vice president at Wipro, told the financial daily. 
 Wipro's efforts comes at a time when its rivals like <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> are also revamping training framework to re-skill its employees on a large scale so that top talent is identified and separated from the rest to work on the toughest and most challenging new-age customer projects. 
 
During a meeting with analysts in March, Kurien had informed that the company was putting a new incentive scheme in place, under which incentives would be linked to incremental revenue and would also make it compulsory for account managers to cross-sell at least three of the company's five service offerings for them to earn variable pay. 
 
Meanwhile, another programme-The Upscale- was launched to lay emphasis on learning new skills, in addition to an employee's existing area of specialisation. 
 
"UpScale looks at what are the surround skills in your core skill area which an employee can take up. And the whole idea was that you have one core skill in which you have deep knowledge. On top of that, you take up another two skills," Santurkar told ET. 
 
The third programme, Cutting Edge, is a new digital strategy under which company's top technical talent and highly skilled programmers are identified and will be rewarded and incentivised differently from the rest of the organisation. 
 
"Cutting Edge is meant for seasoned developers. It is by invitation. People can't just get into the programme. People have to nominate themselves. And then we evaluate what the person has done and whether they have the ability to get into a skill like this," said Santurkar. 
 
As India’s traditional IT Fortune 500 customers are being challenged by digital firms like Amazon and Facebook, they are undertaking large-scale technology transformations. 
 
Customers such as retailer Target are pressurising vendors such as Infosys and Wipro, and asking for highly-skilled technical staff that is capable of solving complex, new-age technology problems. 
 
"I think we are facing the highest levels of disruption in our history. If we don't change and adapt, we won't be around a few years from now," said Navneet Kapoor, managing director of Target India in a recent interview. 
 
Meanwhile, Santurkar told ET that the Cutting Edge programme would be scaled up further this year as part of Wipro's digital push. Other new training initiatives that Wipro has created are Digital Architecture Academy and also a separate academy that focuses on Open Source. 
 
"The objective of the Digital Architecture Academy, is to train the existing architects on the digital technologies and how to architect systems for the digital world. Be it cloud, or be it analytics, any of these areas," Santurkar told ET.

TCS, Infosys, and Wipro hired 2.33 lakh employees in FY22 to tame high attrition

Bengaluru, June 12 (IANS) With the aim of driving business continuity for its customers, IT major Wipro on Friday said it will integrate a host of services offered by Citrix Systems and Microsoft to create high-performance virtual compute environments that leverage the power of Cloud architecture and next-generation digital workspace technology. Wipro VirtuaDesk, Wipro's Desktop as a Service solution and Wipro's Digital Workspace solution will join forces with Citrix and Microsoft. The combined solution will allow for rapid and easy deployment of secure and reliable digital workspaces, including application suites, Wipro said, adding that this will let clients accommodate increased calls for remote work, which in many cases is a mandate. "The collaboration is a testament of our strength and our joint resolve to enhance the value we can create for our customers," Satish Y, Vice President, Cloud &amp; Infrastructure services, Wipro Limited, said in a statement. "We intend to bring together our strong complementary capabilities on virtualisation tools and platforms, desktop and application integration and managed services, to help mitigate the impact of the pandemic." Citrix provides a range of digital workspace solutions designed to ensure that business operations can continue, whatever the disruption. Wipro said it will leverage many of these solutions, including Citrix Workspaces, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, Citrix Gateway and Citrix Analytics to help customers enable remote work and drive seamless productivity, while giving employees the flexibility to work from anywhere in a safe, secure and reliable manner. Microsoft brings a set of technologies to enable rapid implementation of Cloud Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutions. Wipro will integrate Azure Active Directory, multi factor authentication, Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) for securing the desktop from external threats, FS Logix profiles for user profile management and Office 365 integration to non-persistent desktops. Wipro partners with Citrix, Microsoft on digital workspaces
