After last quarter’s massive dip, Wipro adds 7,000 employees with plans to continue hiring in Q2

The company added 30,000 people to its roster between July to September. Wipro to promote 80% of its eligible staff in the next three months — increments will be in line with last year

It was only last year that <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, country’s third largest software exporter, had rolled out an ambitious pilot exercise across the company. Under the program, the company had ditched the traditional "bell-curve" appraisal system for a majority of its employees. 
 
Now, Wipro is implementing a new evaluation system which would stress more on frequent, quarterly feedbacks, which were earlier a one-time process that happened annually. 
 
"Traditionally, we've looked at elements including bell curves, building differentiation, categorization, etc. We wanted to make the process of giving feedback more frequent and our performance management system to be an ongoing coaching based process rather than just a one-time annual exercise," said Saurabh Govil, chief HRO at Wipro. 
 
The IT industry of the country is valued at $160-billion as of now, and is undergoing the biggest transitional period in its history. 
 Wipro’s rivals, <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> and <keyword id="28126" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HCL">HCL</keyword>, are undergoing the process of ditching the "bell curve" appraisal, but Wipro has become the first IT services company which has had a full appraisal cycle without applying the bell curve. 
 
"Last year, we rolled out a pilot of our revised performance appraisal system. In the first phase of the pilot we did away with the bell curve for 80 per cent of the workforce," said Govil. 
 
As part of the new appraisal system, Wipro will allocate performance-linked compensation budgets to its managers. This would empower managers to take individual decisions related to employee appraisals. In the previous system, however, managers had to be conventional with the bell-curve bandwidth. 
 
"We felt that managers are taking much more ownership, and being more accountable in the revised performance managed system. We found them saying - it's my decision and it is not something that is being prescribed to me. And this exercise has also ushered in more transparency as it is based on a rating based on their goals and objectives for the year," said Govil. 
 
In the second phase of the pilot program, Wipro is thinking of rolling out this exercise for most managerial-level employees, and would cover the remaining 20% of employees.

Wipro becomes the first Indian IT company to totally overhaul its appraisal system

Wipro fears it may lose its employees to competitors as there is an explosion of IT jobs

Matching the IT industry standards, India's third largest <keyword id="142326" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="software-exporter">software exporter</keyword> Wipro announced average salary hike of 7%. The hike is in line with its rivals <keyword id="6357585" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tata-Consultancy-Services">Tata Consultancy Services</keyword> (<keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword>) and <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>' announcements earlier this year. 
 

	TCS announced average salary hike of about 8% for its employees in India, while India’s second largest software exporter Infosys rolled out average wage increase of 6.5% in March, reports the Economic Times. "The <keyword id="102005" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Wipro-Ltd-">Wipro Ltd.</keyword> has announced a salary increase for eligible employees, effective June 1, 2015. The average salary hike would be 7% for offshore employees and 2% for onsite employees, respectively, with high performers being rewarded with substantially higher increases in their compensation," said Saurabh Govil, global head - Human Resources, Wipro Limited. 
	 

	Wipro also raised the fixed pay salary component at the junior and mid-management levels. The <keyword id="6368235" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="IT-services">IT services</keyword> segment of Wipro has a headcount of 158,217, as of March 31, 2015. 
	 

	The company said, earlier, that it would give double-digit salary hikes to top performers. 
	 

	According to experts, employees in the IT sector are expected to get a 8%-10% average salary hike this year, but a top performer who has the right mix of technology and domain skills can expect more than double the average hike, going up to about 25% or even higher in some cases.

It also offered bonuses to employees with upto three years of experience. </li><li>Wipro added nearly 6,603 employees during the second quarter, taking the headcount to 181,453 from 174,850 in the last quarter. </li><li>The software major reported a net profit of ₹25.5 billion for the second quarter of 2019-20 fiscal. </li></ul>Wipro — the fourth largest IT services company in India — is planning to promote 5,000 of its employees, to check its increasing attrition rate. The technology giant recorded an attrition rate of 17% for the quarter ending in September. “Attrition (rate) has been a good story for us as compared to others. We have given salary hikes and now are looking at a huge number of promotions in the coming quarter. Wipro is giving promotions and bonuses to check growing attrition

While Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys have started gearing up on the expectations of a rise in attrition, Wipro has added about 12,000 employees in the June quarter alone. It is the highest ever in a decade. The company’s IT services workforce crossed the milestone of 200,000 taking the overall headcount to 209,890. Wipro has added more than 12,000 employees, which is 80% of what it had added in FY21 and highest in the last decade, said Thierry Delaporte, chief executive (CEO) and managing director (MD) of Wipro. Like its peers, Wipro is also expecting the attrition rate to go up and hence it has been hiring aggressively. In fact, it will roll out 30,000 offers for freshers to join in FY22. “Attrition, as I had called out last quarter itself, will see an uptick, which is very much in line with the demand environment in the industry,” said Saurabh Govil, president and chief human resources officer at Wipro. <div type="image" title="Wipro attrition" height="900" width="1200" msid="84445950" hostid="261"></div> He mentioned that 80% of the organisation will go through three promotion cycles in 12 months- December 2020, June 2021 and again in December 2021. Besides, the company has been conducting several employee training activities and distributing bonuses to retain its employees. “We had called out last quarter that we will do a skill based bonuses [sic]… Apart from that, to augment the supply chain, we are doing unprecedented hiring in terms of freshers into the organisation. We will be onboarding 6,000 freshers in September quarter, which is the highest every Wipro has done. And we will be rolling out more than 30,000 offers this year for freshers to join us next year,” added Govil. Wipro delivered exceptional results in the June quarter with its acquisition of Capco finally making it onto the books. The company reported 12.2% sequential growth in revenue, out of which 4.9% came organically, while the rest came from Capco, said Jatin Dalal, chief financial officer at Wipro at a press conference held after the announcement of June quarter financial results. Wipro's hiring at highest in a decade to hedge against employees leaving

The company is looking to onboard 10,000 employees over the next year in the US amid the uncertainty around H-1B visa regulations. Over the last five years, TCS has hired around 21,500 employees in the country in its efforts to localise. Wipro, which recently saw a change in leadership with Thierry Delaporte at the helm, did not disclose any exact numbers but does have ‘robust’ hiring plans for the second half of the current fiscal. “Very robust hiring this quarter, both laterally and campuses. We continue to see the same momentum going forward,” said the company’s CHRO Saurabh Govil during the second-quarter earnings call. He added that given the company’s current growth momentum, hiring — laterally and via campuses — is an important part of managing that growth. This includes hiring across geographies, including India and in the new business areas, especially cloud and cybersecurity, where the demand lies. India’s IT sector is among the first to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Hiring freshers, rather than laterally, allows companies to pick up talent that’s relatively cheaper. It’s also easier to train fresh minds in-house for specific skills, especially because they are in short supply in the market.
