 Another name that has appeared is of <keyword id="1671644" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Winsome-Group">Winsome Group</keyword>, which are now a distant memory. 
 
In 2013, two Winsome Group companies, a diamond house, defaulted with 14 banks and created a debt of Rs 6, 800 crore with local lenders. 
Now, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cbi" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">CBI</a> is investigating the long forgotten matter and even lenders are resorting to name and shame some of the former and present independent directors of Winsome Diamonds &amp; Jewellery and another group company, Forever, to get their money back. 
 
Even <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=punjab+national+bank" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Punjab National Bank</a>, with exposure of Rs 1, 800 crore, has sprung into action and has sent out letters to three people asking them to help in arranging repayment. 
 
Failing to do so, banks will declare them as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=wilful+defaulters" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">'wilful defaulters'</a> and even publish their names and photographs in newspapers. 
 
They are Harimohan Namdev, a practising company secretary; Madan Khurjekar, a former banker; and Urvashi Saxena, who was a senior official with the income-tax department. Among them, Namdev is still on the board of Winsome. 
 
As per a report in Economic Times, three of them said they have replied back to the PNB, saying that as per <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=RBI" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Reserve Bank of India</a> rules independent directors cannot be declared '<keyword id="1467083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="wilful-defaulters">wilful defaulters</keyword>' for a company's failure to repay loans. 
 
A wilful defaulter is a person who will barred from getting any loans from banks in the future and from taking up post on boards of listed companies.

Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine said his party 'blew the timing' on the infrastructure and social spending bills, contributing to the party's loss in VA governor race

Indian banks have technically written off a staggering amount of Rs 68,607 crore due from 50 top wilful defaulters, including absconding diamantaire Mehul Choksi, according to a reply under RTI from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Prominent RTI activist Saket Gokhale had filed an RTI query with the RBI seeking details of the 50 top wilful defaulters and their current loan status till February 16. "I filed this RTI because Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur had refused to reply to this starred question asked in the Parliament by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in the last Budget Session on February 16," Gokhale told IANS. Disclosing what the government didn't, the RBI's Central Public Information Officer <keyword id="135505" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abhay-Kumar">Abhay Kumar</keyword> provided the replies on Saturday (April 24), with several startling revelations in the 'diamond-studded list', said Gokhale. The RBI said that this amount (Rs 68,607 crore) comprising outstanding and the amounts technically/prudentially written off till September 30, 2019. An inadvertent error had crept in a previous version of the report, which has now been now corrected. "The apex bank also declined to provide the relevant information on overseas borrowers citing a Supreme Court judgement of December 16, 2015," Gokhale told IANS. Topping the list is Choksi's scam-hit company, Gitanjali Gems Limited, which owed Rs.5,492 crore, besides other group companies, Gili India Ltd and Nakshatra Brands Ltd, which had taken loans of Rs 1,447 crore and Rs 1,109 crore, respectively. Choksi is currently a citizen of Antigua &amp; Barbados Isles, while his nephew and another absconder diamond trader <keyword id="740578" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirav">Nirav</keyword> Modi is in London. The second in the list is REI Agro Ltd., with an amount of Rs 4,314 crore, and its directors <keyword id="9131601" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sandip-jhujhunwala">Sandip Jhujhunwala</keyword> and <keyword id="984138" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Jhunjhunwala">Sanjay Jhunjhunwala</keyword> who are already under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) since over a year. The next on the list in the Rs 4,000-crore bracket is absconding diamantaire Jatin Mehta's Winsome Diamonds &amp; Jewellery owing Rs 4,076 crore and which is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation for various bank frands. In the Rs 2,000-crore category, there is the Kanpur-based writing instruments giant, Rotomac Global Pvt. Ltd., part of the famed Kothari group, which owed Rs 2,850 crore. The others in this category include: Kudos Chemie, Punjab (Rs.2,326 crore), Baba Ramdev and Balkrishna's group company Ruchi Soya Industries Ltd., Indore (Rs.2,212 crore), and <keyword id="265518" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zoom-Developers">Zoom Developers</keyword> Pvt. Ltd., Gwalior (Rs.2,012 crore). There are 18 companies in the Rs.1K-segment with some prominent names like Harish R. Mehta's Ahmedabad-based Forever Precious Jewellery &amp; Diamonds Pvt. Ltd. (Rs.,1962 crore), and absconder liquor baron Vijay Mallya's defunct <keyword id="6373962" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kingfisher-airlines">Kingfisher Airlines</keyword> Ltd. (Rs 1,943 crore). Another 25 companies fall in the sub-1K-crore category with outstandings ranging from Rs 605 crore to Rs 984 crore, either individually or as group companies. Six among the 50 top wilful defaulters are connected with the glittering diamond and/or gold jewellery industries. "A majority of them have defaulted prominent nationalist banks over the past several years and many of them are either absconding or facing action by various probe agencies and some are under litigation," Gokhale said. Flight attendants learn the double-ear slap, the eye-poke, and the groin-kick. They learn tricks to swiftly disarm passengers with sharp weapons, and how to use items readily available aboard a plane for defense.The moves are designed to de-escalate and quickly subdue passengers because in the words of former<a href="https://www.afacwa.org/security_training"> trainer Scott Armstrong</a>, "you don't want to get into a long, drawn-out fight."This is, as they say, not a drill. Just last week, the training was famously put to good use, when a female passenger on an American Airlines flight to North Carolina attacked and bit several flight attendants and tried to open the plane's door mid-flight. Resourceful flight attendants grabbed a roll of duct-tape, and the woman arrived at her destination, subdued and bound tightly to her chair. It might not have been standard protocol but it was effective and American Airlines later <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/tiktok-video-shows-woman-american-093719603.html">applauded</a> its crew. It's not just your imagination; there really has been an extraordinary amount of mayhem in the skies recently. Last month, an off-duty attendant on a Delta flight to Los Angeles from Atlanta <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/12/us/delta-flight-diverted-oklahoma-city-fbi.html">overpowered flight attendants</a> and took charge of the PA system. Passengers had to step in to help<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9IUUs2CCG0"> subdue him</a>. A video of a woman attacking a Southwest flight attendant and<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/05/28/southwest-video-punch-flight-attendant/"> knocking out two of her teeth</a> before another passenger stepped in to help recently went viral.The annual flight attendant training, which the Transportation Security Authority (TSA) started in 2004 and paused due to Covid19, resumes at a time of record-breaking reports of delays due to passenger misbehavior on commercial flights. <div type="image" title="Three flight attendants restrain fellow flight attendants in a training drill." height="2021" width="3000" msid="84503612" hostid="261"></div>During a year when many travelers stayed home due to Covid-19, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) <a href="https://www.faa.gov/data_research/passengers_cargo/unruly_passengers/">says</a> it has received 3,420 reports of "unruly passenger" incidents on planes as of July 13. More than three quarters of those incidents have been related to passengers refusing to abide by the federal <keyword id="9589570" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mask-mandate">mask mandate</keyword>. With five months left in the year, the average number of reports has already been surpassed roughly threefold, and the FAA has set up a new special task force to investigate. There are also more firearms being discovered during routine x-ray screenings of carry-on luggage, according to the TSA. As of mid-July, roughly 3,000 weapons have been intercepted so far in 2021, and 85% of them were loaded, the TSA told Insider in an email. In a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GU1g25tJWeU">town hall</a> posted on YouTube, she said that flight attendants have become "literal punching bags" for the public and that many had left their jobs. "This should send a message to the public that these events are serious and flight attendants are there to ensure the safety and security of everyone in the plane," Nelson told the press. Nelson's group says it received over 5,000 responses to its fact-finding<a href="https://www.afacwa.org/unruly_passenger_survey"> survey</a> on unruly passengers. According to an AFA spokesperson, more flight attendants than ever have been requesting support and advice from the union. <h2>What can be done?</h2>And yet, in the face of all of this, the options that are available to airlines are limited.There are not necessarily enough federal air marshals - officials who dress in civilian clothes and are tasked with protecting against the most extreme in-flight scenarios - to be aboard every flight, and their responsibilities have never covered keeping the peace for fellow travelers. The FAA has previously kept this information private but, a spokesperson explained, figured the details might make people think twice before acting out on a plane.Also, the FAA has chosen to get creative. Passengers deciding to bring alcohol aboard flights was another common thread to the incidents. That policy will be reviewed in September, when the mask mandate is set to expire, and there is some discussion of making it permanent. As a result, in-flight misbehavior has become increasingly expensive. Under zero-tolerance, the FAA has handed down a whopping $682,000 in fines year-to-date against 84 passengers, many over<a href="https://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=26140"> $10,000</a>. The steepest fine proposed so far this year was $52,500 for a Delta Airlines passenger who, last December, tried to open the cockpit door, <keyword id="6359886" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="assault">assault</keyword>ed a flight attendant, and was subdued and cuffed with the help of passengers. The woman, who was flying from Honolulu to Seattle, then freed herself of the cuffs to assault the flight attendant a second time, and was met by law enforcement upon arrival.Another <a href="https://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=26300">fine </a>of $21,500 went to a Frontier Airlines passenger who argued about the mask policy, drank alcohol not served by the airline, and argued with a nearby passenger before striking the passenger in the head. And a woman in Indianapolis was fined $18,500 because she argued with the captain of the plane, and punched a nearby passenger in the back of the head, while the passenger was holding an infant. Because of the enormous caseload, the task force has not yet processed fines for the incident involving the flight attendant who lost teeth.

We need it gone."<h2>Millions of Americans face 'economically devastating' bills and costs</h2>This week, the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) <a href="https://www.epi.org/blog/unemployment-filing-failures-new-survey-confirms-that-millions-of-jobless-were-unable-to-file-an-unemployment-insurance-claim/">announced</a> that although some 26 million Americans have filed for <keyword id="6358907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="unemployment">unemployment</keyword> benefits since the crisis began — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-weekly-jobless-claims-unemployment-filings-labor-market-recession-coronavirus-2020-4">a number that rose to 30 million since its study was published</a> — that number drastically understates the economic devastation in the US.In <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-pandemic-job-losses-14-million-unable-to-apply-unemployment-2020-4">a survey published on Tuesday</a>, the think tank found that up to 13.9 million other Americans were eligible for the benefits. Will 2014 spell doom for the last white House Democrat in the Deep South?
THE best political ad of the 2012 election involved Congressman John Barrow and his favourite guns.
A Democrat who represents a conservative part of Georgia, Mr Barrow used his 30-second spot to woo two very different groups of voters, both numerous in his district: government-loathing rural whites, and blacks seeking protection against injustice. "Long before I was born, my grandfather used this little Smith &amp; Wesson here to help stop a lynching," Mr Barrow begins mildly, holding an antique revolver.
That "To Kill a Mockingbird" moment behind him, his tone grows steely. Brandishing his father's rifle, he boasts of an endorsement by the National Rifle Association. These are my guns now, he declares. "And ain't nobody going to take them away."
Thanks to tireless constituent services and a centrist record (recently he has voted about half the time with House Republican leaders), Mr Barrow has been elected five times. He is a stalwart of the Blue Dog coalition of conservative Democrats. He is also his party's last white House member in the Deep South.
Naturally, his survival annoys the Republican Party. Twice over the past decade Mr Barrow's district, Georgia's 12th, has been redrawn by Republicans to make it whiter, more rural and more conservative. In the 2008 and 2012 presidential votes his district rejected Barack Obama by double-digit margins. Still, Mr Barrow clung on.
<h3>Last moderate standing</h3>
<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>This November will mark his hardest election to date: his first mid-term contest since the 2011 gerrymandering of his district without Mr Obama on the ballot to pull young, black and cash-strapped Democrats to the polls.
Given that Republicans in his district call him "about as conservative as he can be and still be a Democrat", his fate will reveal something larger, too: whether voters mean it when they praise aisle-crossing pragmatism, or whether--increasingly--they see <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> as a zero-sum contest between two national parties, which the other team must lose.
A recent Saturday saw Mr Barrow join a festival parade in Reidsville, a small town surrounded by fields of cotton and sweet onions. While helpers threw candy to watching children, Mr Barrow, 58, jogged between groups of citizens who do not always have much in common.
The parade's theme was "Celebrating Diversity". In addition to wailing fire engines, school cheerleaders and an army band, the "Sons of Confederate Veterans" were there: a group steeped in an angrily conservative brand of nostalgia.
Mr Barrow bounded over, offered a comic tale about a civil-war unit from his home county manned by doddery old men, then thanked the scowling Confederates for showing up. The congressman then strode over to a pro-diversity group, whose truck was filled with winsome children and bore a banner reading: "A Rainbow Wouldn't Be A Rainbow If It Was Missing A Single Color". He thanked them for coming, too.
Mr Barrow greeted black residents of a public-housing project and hugged policemen. He flirted with old ladies, admired classic cars, thanked Reidsville's mayor for "standing by me", and commiserated with a man shouting about seeing him in TV ads. ("I wish it was otherwise," Mr Barrow called back. "Good to see you in person.")
Mr Barrow's Republican opponent, Rick Allen, who owns a building firm, is a more conventional campaigner. He has cast Mr Barrow as a Washington insider and liberal enabler of the Obama agenda. Canvassing car-park picnickers before a college-football game in Statesboro, Mr Allen urged them to "put a small-business man in the United States Congress".
Outrageously, he attacked Mr Barrow for repeatedly moving house--neglecting to mention that he was forced to by Republicans who redrew the map of his district to exclude him. At times Mr Allen sounds cross about Mr Barrow's refusal to give up. Noting that he had met only Republicans grilling meat outside the game, he told supporters: "You are my kind of people," before grumbling about his rival: "He's the last Blue Dog Democrat, can you believe it?"
Other locals can believe it. True, some call Mr Barrow "deceitful", accusing him of being both for and against such laws as Obamacare. But more call him "a good guy" whose defeat--if it comes--will be a verdict on national politics.
Bill Werkheiser, a Republican running for a state legislator's seat near Reidsville, expresses heartfelt regret that, if Mr Barrow only voted "five times in 20" with the Democrats, that is enough to damn him in today's hyper-partisan climate. He ventures that Mr Barrow "is so well-liked" that if he followed other Georgia Democrats and switched party, he would sweep all rivals aside.

Asked why he does not become a Republican, Mr Barrow offers well-polished swipes at both parties, adding that a change of partisan label "wouldn't change the way I vote". His sunny affability slips only twice--once when asked about the lynching his grandfather stopped. His great-great-uncle, a university professor, heard of trouble at the local stockade, he explains.
The professor took a copy of the state legal code for protection. Mr Barrow's grandfather felt a gun might help, too. At that point the congressman (whose father, a judge, presided over school desegregation cases) begins to muse about the past, and moments of lawlessness shrouded in silence. Even Mark Twain feared to publish an essay on lynching in his lifetime, he notes grimly.
Another flash of passion is prompted by asking why he is the last white House Democrat in the Deep South. There are still plenty of moderate Georgians who vote "across racial lines", Mr Barrow says. But such folk have been scattered across congressional districts drawn to maximise partisan purity. Both parties are guilty of gerrymandering, he concedes: it is like "an arms race".
Mr Barrow has some cheery new ads in 2014. Snuggling a pet in one, he says he wouldn't "wish Washington on a dog". Another boasts of a clinic that he secured for veterans. In person he cannot quite conceal his dismay. Voters of the centre are being disenfranchised, he sorrows. He is right. This may not save him.
