Four tigers and three lions have tested COVID-19 positive at the Bronx Zoo in New York, authorities announced, weeks after a <keyword id="67270" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Malayan-Tiger">Malayan tiger</keyword> at the facility was confirmed positive and six other big cats were said to be exhibiting similar symptoms. The first big cat, a four-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia, developed a dry cough and loss of appetite in late March, while Nadia's sister Azul, two Amur tigers, and three African lions also showed the same symptoms. "We can confirm that the three other tigers in Tiger Mountain and the three African lions that exhibited a cough have also tested positive for COVID-19," the zoo said in a statement on Wednesday. The test was done by using a faecal sample so that the animals did not have to be placed under anesthesia, as with the Malayan tiger. "The faecal tests confirmed our suspicion that all seven cats had the infection, and also determined that one tiger at Tiger Mountain that never developed a cough was also positive for the disease," it added. The wildlife centre said that "all eight cats continue to do well. They are behaving normally, eating well, and their coughing is greatly reduced". "We tested the tigers and lions out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about COVID-19 will contribute to the world's continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus," said the zoo officials. "The testing of these cats was done in veterinary laboratories and resources used did not take from those being used for human testing," they added. It is still believed that the animals were infected by an asymptomatic staff member who had contact with the animals before developing symptoms. As of Wednesday, two pet cats in New York state have tested positive for COVID-19, becoming the first domestic animal cases detected in the US. Both animals live in different areas of New York state, the current epicentre of the pandemic not only in the US but worldwide. Los Angeles, Apr 8 () Exploitation of wildlife by humans through hunting, trade, and habitat degradation leads to close contact between the animals and humans, increasing the risk of spillover of viruses like the novel coronavirus which causes COVID-19, according to a study. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, provides new evidence for assessing spillover risk in animal species and highlights how the processes that create wildlife population declines also enable the transmission of animal viruses to humans. "Spillover of viruses from animals is a direct result of our actions involving wildlife and their habitat," said lead author Christine Kreuder Johnson, from the University of California, Davis in the US. "The consequence is they're sharing their viruses with us. These actions simultaneously threaten species survival and increase the risk of spillover. In an unfortunate convergence of many factors, this brings about the kind of mess we're in now," Johnson said. The scientists assembled a large dataset of the 142 known viruses that spill over from animals to humans and the species that have been implicated as potential hosts. Using the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, they examined patterns in those species' abundance, extinction risks and underlying causes for species declines. The data show clear trends in spillover risk that highlight how people have interacted with animals throughout history, the researchers said. They found that domesticated animals, including livestock, have shared the highest number of viruses with humans, with eight times more zoonotic viruses compared to wild mammalian species. This is likely a result of our frequent close interactions with these species for centuries, the researchers said. According to the study, wild animals that have increased in abundance and adapted well to human-dominated environments also share more viruses with people. These include some rodent, bat and primate species that live among people, near our homes, and around our farms and crops, making them high-risk for ongoing transmission of viruses to people, it found. The researchers noted that at the other end of the spectrum are threatened and endangered species. These are animals whose population declines were connected to hunting, wildlife trade and decreases in habitat quality, the said. These species were predicted to host twice as many zoonotic viruses compared to threatened species that had populations decreasing for other reasons, according to the researchers. Threatened and endangered species also tend to be highly managed and directly monitored by humans trying to bring about their population recovery, which also puts them into greater contact with people, they said. Bats repeatedly have been implicated as a source of "high consequence" pathogens, including SARS, Nipah virus, Marburg virus and ebolaviruses, the study noted. SARSAR

Wildlife trade, habitat degradation driving virus spillover: Study

The camera trap was originally set up by Linda Kerley of the Zoological Society of London and Jonathan Slaght of the <keyword id="6360144" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Wildlife">Wildlife</keyword> Conservation Society to photograph Siberian tigers.
In December 2011 the camera trap captured three images, spanning a period of 2 seconds, of an adult golden eagle grabbing onto the back of a six- to seven-month-old sika deer. Full-grown golden eagles can <a href="http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7096.html" target="_blank">weigh up to 14 pounds</a>, while the study's authors estimate that the deer weighed between 88 and 110 pounds. 
A fourth image shows the deer's carcass, found by Kerley two weeks after the incident when she was checking up on the camera. The deer appeared to have fallen during the attack and died in the same place. All that remained was the hide and skeleton indicating that other scavengers had dropped by to pick at the body.

There are many documented accounts of golden eagles attacking and killing large mammals, including other species of deer, livestock, mountain goats, and even a brown bear cub, according to the study.
But this is the first time, in more than a decade of studying deer deaths in Russia, that Kerley has seen any deer killed by a golden eagle. 
The authors point out that this is not a common occurrence and there is no evidence that these attacks have an impact on Russia's deer population. But the photos are amazing.

Dr. Susan Chomba, Director of Vital Landscapes at the World Resources Institute spoke with Catherine Boudreau, senior sustainability reporter at Insider, about biodiversity loss in the past decade. Chomba said, "This is hugely driven by, of course, human factors. Nachmany said, "I think between the micro and the macro, between the rhinoceros and the fungi, we need to remember that there are critical services that we don't even know how they are interconnected to each other."<h2>Biodiversity's climate change connection</h2>Chomba said that people often make policy based on a "siloed approach." In terms of climate change she said, "It's really affecting a lot of actors outside the policy environment, like the private sector actors in the energy sector, in the industrial, in the input side on the agriculture side, and of course transport."Nachmany agreed and added that humans love to think in terms of solutions. Nachmany said, "When it comes to biodiversity it is important to think of needs instead of solutions. If we think about what are human needs: humans need shelter, humansneed food, humans need a temperature range that is livable in. And all of those, the solutions that address both climate change and biodiversity conservation are the same solutions."<h2>Finance and Biodiversity</h2>Nachmany noted that the financial sector is trending towards a better understanding of sustainable investment. She said, "Without a livable planet, no investment is safe. We're seeing movement in very strange places, like large investor coalitions that all of a sudden care about nature positive investments."Chomba noted that people who can pay are the ones who are benefitting from biodiverse populations. Referring to the Congo Basin she said, "What we are seeing recently, and especially in a country like DRC, is the government last year decided to issue concessions to at least 27 concessions basically for any kind of use. Anybody who is willing to pay for the concessions gets the rights to use these lands." The Congo is home to critically endangered species and protected indigenous communities. Chomba said, "I think the case of DRC has really tested the global finance mechanisms and the global commitments to protection of biodiversity, to protection of carbon that is already in these ecosystems and to the protection of indigenous people."Catherine Boudreau:really glad that you mentioned finance because what I've been thinking about a lot is how as a society we don't really put a price on nature, even though it does have so much value to communities, to businesses, to governments. So as a result, there aren't always the best financial incentives to protect it when maybe there's more money to be made in other industries, whether it's oil or timber.Nature adds value to communities, businesses, and goverenments society doesn't necessarily put a price on nature. On how to tackle biodiversity and the harm to vulnerable populations Chomba said, "The problem is, we don't have strong governance to access that that decentralized power and authority and decision making to these communities more. We still tend to have a lot of centralized regime in terms of how we manage our biodiversity, and that's a key issue."

The movement has attracted a cast of unlikely characters, including venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and convicted fraudster Martin Shkreli."EA and e/acc are mostly the same people," Emmett Shear, the former interim CEO of OpenAI, said in an interview with <a target="_blank" href="https://meridian.mercury.com/emmett-shear-part-one">Meridian</a>. "We have no affinity for biological humans or even the human mind structure. We are posthumanists in the sense that we recognize the supremacy of higher forms of free energy accumulation over lesser forms of free energy accumulation. We aim to accelerate this process to preserve the light of technocapital."Basically, AI overlords are a necessity to preserve capitalism, and we need to get on creating them quickly.In the site's first blog post, written by anonymous e/acc proponents @zestular, @creatine_cycle, @bayeslord, and @BasedBeffJezos — who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/emilybaker-white/2023/12/01/who-is-basedbeffjezos-the-leader-of-effective-accelerationism-eacc/?sh=764557747a13">Forbes</a> later confirmed is Guillaume Verdon, a former Google engineer who later founded the AI startup Extropic — reads "We haven't seen anything yet."While e/accs say they have no love for biological humans, they still describe their movement as "pro-human" — but to them, it's technology that will save us, not ourselves.E/accs are generally reluctant to indulge even the most earnest questions about safety concerns about AI development. In response to questions from Business Insider, Shkreli <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/wagieeacc/status/1734412908879114439">warned</a> fellow accelerationists in a post on X not to talk to the press, calling it "the least e/acc thing you can do."<h2>Investing in a post-humanist future</h2>Making "sentience more varied," as the e/acc blog states, is the inevitable outcome of unrestrained AI development. And business is booming.Tan is positioned as one of tech's top investors, according to<a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/lists/midas-seed/?sh=7e67b5115524"> Forbes' Midas Seed List,</a> and through Y Combinator, has invested in more than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ycombinator.com/companies/industry/ai">100 different AI startups</a>.Billionaire Andreessen, who has written and released a <a target="_blank" href="https://a16z.com/the-techno-optimist-manifesto/">5,000-word manifesto</a> detailing his support of rapidly developing AI, has also invested heavily in the industry — including OpenAI, per<a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexkonrad/2023/11/17/openai-investors-blindsided-by-sam-altmans-firing/?sh=59a639603fc9"> Forbes</a>.Shkreli, who has "e/acc" proudly written next to his<a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/wagieeacc?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor"> username</a> on X, established an AI business called <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/formerly-barred-from-pharma-industry-entrepreneur-develops-ai-tool-using-chatgpt-to-cut-down-hospital-runs/articleshow/99662101.cms">Dr. Gupta</a> following his release from prison for securities fraud. "And it's really heartbreaking."<h2>'It is like thinking that squirrels can control humanity.'</h2>For e/accs, the world is simple: AI will solve our problems because we want it to, and we're the ones programming it. Opportunity is endless, and at the end of the AI rainbow is a singularity worth more than gold.A public proponent of Effective Accelerationism who spoke to Business Insider said that the movement wants people who can allocate capital to the e/acc cause and further their goals. He was granted anonymity to talk frankly about the movement without risk to his professional relationships, but his identity is known to Business Insider.He said proponents believe engineers will only invest in an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/techno-optimism-silicon-valley-controversial-new-philosophy-marc-andreessen-2023-10">evolution of AI</a> that would benefit humans — but AI safety experts just don't see it that way; the e/acc movement has been heavily criticized [by cyber security experts. One researcher called it "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/10/technology/ai-acceleration.html#:~:text=Effective%20Accelerationism%20(often%20shortened%20to,barred%20pursuit%20of%20technological%20progress.">a dangerous unaccountable ideology</a> inspired by replacing humanity with AI." Another said that the movement has "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/emilybaker-white/2023/12/01/who-is-basedbeffjezos-the-leader-of-effective-accelerationism-eacc/">no social vision</a>."It's also a naive way of thinking about superintelligence, Roman Yampolskiy, the director of the Cyber Security Laboratory at the University of Louisville, told Business Insider."No one, even in e/acc, will suggest that they have a working superintelligence control mechanism or even a prototype for one," Yampolskiy said. "Why would anyone think that it is possible to indefinitely control a superintelligent (god-like) machine? But, as Yampolskiy pointed out to Business Insider, many e/accs are not scientists and are not AI safety researchers. This is his wheelhouse — not theirs.<h2>'Either we stop, or we all die.'</h2>While well-developed AI has the power to help screen for cancer, increase accessibility for disabled people, conserve wildlife, combat world hunger, and even aid in the climate crisis, critics of the e/acc movement argue the current practical applications of the technology would become immediately irrelevant should AI begin thinking for itself and determining its own goals for humanity's best interest without humans to control it.But as e/accs seek to defy the warnings of safety researchers, what about the rest of us?E/accs want to reshape society radically, alter how we work and interact, and redefine what it means to be alive, but the general public doesn't have much of a say in AI — or enough money to have a voice.Yampolskiy said that the attention this movement has garnered among the uber-rich is troubling and "even more worrisome if you look closely; you realize that these people are not representative of humanity, our belief and values, they themselves are not value-aligned with humans."His vision is diametrically opposed to that of the e/accs: Pause the development of AI."Either we stop before we get to superhuman AI, or we all die.
