I was the general manager of Sheepscot General Store, a very special spot on five acres of land with a vegetable farm. Sadly, my last day at the store was March 18. Sheepscot is a small operation, so I wore a lot of hats during my six years at the store. It was my job to make sure everything ran smoothly, from employee management to accounts payable and receivable. A large part of my role was rooted in community work and event planning. Building trust with the customers was so fulfilling for me and was definitely my favorite part of the job. <h2>My boss at the time was pregnant and trying to mitigate exposure, so I was asked to leave. </h2>I pose more of a risk because of my partner's exposure to others. The store remained open but went to mostly online orders and curbside pickup. Initially, it was very difficult for me because I live in the town and would drive by and see the activity at the store. It was hard to feel as though I was no longer leading my team. I felt as though my troops were in the trenches and I wasn't with them. <h2>Things were okay when we were getting the extra <keyword id="6358907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="unemployment">unemployment</keyword>, and I was actually able to pay off some of my debt. </h2>Obviously, I'm not going places right now, and I haven't been frivolous, so that's helped. Now that unemployment has been cut to $346 a week, I can barely contribute to both the household bills and the cost of food. I've always been someone who's contributed. Thankfully, my two children are grown and on their own and I'm married, so there's another income coming in.Honestly, I've been grateful for the rest. It's been about a decade since I've stopped to think about myself. A lot of this time has been trying to take the word "should" out of my vocabulary.I'm taking on projects that I never had time for in the past, like raising chickens and creating a garden of my own. I now have nine laying hens and meat birds. The hens are lovely and follow me around the yard while I sing to them. There are so many beautiful places to see in Maine. On difficult days, I take car rides with my best friend to nowhere, listening to Americana music, and we sometimes cry. After that, I'm able to be productive again. <h2>Society tells you that you're not useful if you're not constantly productive, and I beat myself up a lot if I don't cross things off the list.</h2>I don't sleep well, so I get up early every morning to get things accomplished. My way of contributing right now is helping my partner get set to go to work. My quiet time comes after, when I drink coffee, chat with a few friends on the phone, and then head outside to take care of the chickens. I'll usually have more coffee with them and spend some time in the garden. <h2>I'm feeling quite a bit of trepidation right now because this time of rest is coming to an end and I need to go and find a job. </h2>When I was first let go, I didn't take a lot of time to look for employment, but I'm starting to search now with a very fine-tooth comb. I know that a majority of what's out there right now is either not going to fulfill me or pay me what I need to make. The idea of reinventing myself isn't new. About 10 years ago, I had a successful wholesale food business. We tried to expand right before the economy crashed in 2008 and ended up losing everything. I had to completely start over, so this is somewhat familiar. The difference is that I'm just not willing to lower myself this time around. I've done that before and I'm not willing to do it again.

Though the <keyword id="6354780" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> government has not not -- so far -- imposed a blanket lockdown, many small eateries and food and beverage (F&amp;B) outlets still open have been hit hard. The Bengaluru hotel Association has 1,500 members representing 1,021 eateries, 365 cafs and bakeries, and 115 fine-dining places. Venkatesh Raghu, a new entrant in the F&amp;B space at Jayanagar through Amande, a patisserie, said he is facing unexpected hardships. "A lot of demand for our products comes from the malls. They have since refused to buy our products due to the lockdown. Since we are in B2B and B2C business, we are unable to supply anything, resulting in heavy losses," Raghu told IANS. As part of the partial lockdown, all malls and theatres in the city are shut till March 31, disrupting the whole suppliers-buyers-customers chain. "I run a restaurant and need to pay staff salaries, rentals, electric bills; so this lockdown will really impact our working capital. I really hope things will recover soon once the outbreak subsides," Raghu hoped. Rajesh, 40, a kirana store owner at Kodathi near Sarjapura Road, said his regular customers, the daily-wagers, have stopped buying from him. "Many daily wage labourers are my regular customers. Nowadays, they are missing, resulting in decreased sales," Rajesh told IANS. Similarly, Pixel, a food court in Forum Shantiniketan mall at Whitefield is getting rid of its perishable raw material as the mall would be shut till the month-end. "We can keep dry non-perishable raw material for longer. But we are getting rid of whatever perishable raw material is left with us. We cannot keep it for long," an official working at the food court told IANS. He said that the food court is emptying all frozen ingredients like chicken, meat, pork, vegetables, and other items used by different restaurants at the food court. "Whatever raw material we can salvage, we are sending it to the airport KFC and other restaurants as these are still open for business. With regards to the frozen food, we check expiry dates and discard them accordingly," he added. Pixel houses restaurants such as Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), Burgerking, Dominoes, a Thai concept restaurant, Tiffin Express, Taste of India, Marhaba, Krispy Kreme and others. "Most of Pixel's more than 100 employees have already returned to their hometowns. It would not be easy to find food and other essentials due to the shutdown till March 31," he said. However, amid the coronavirus gloom, there is good news: The food court is paying full salaries to all its employees. Subbaraju Penmatsa, managing director of Prost Brewpub, a microbrewery at Mahadevapura, told IANS that business had dropped by 80 per cent since February. "Due to the fear, we also faced 50 per cent party cancellations from corporates to avoid social gatherings. Right now, we are investing time to train our staff," said Penmatsa. According to Kshitij Neelakantan, co-founder of Naagin, a hot spicy Indian sauce, COVID-19 has impacted the whole food industry, starting from farmers to large multi-national companies like Nestle and Unilever. Meanwhile, food vendors and small restaurants on Bengaluru outskirts near Sarjapura are still operating, with their regular clientele continuing to patronise them despite the lockdown.

After waiting for about a week, the woman finally filed a complaint at the Whitefield police station in Bengaluru on June 3. She accused the man for luring her into having sex by promising a committed relationship. The man was immediately put behind bars since it is illegal to have sex on the pretext of marriage, a law that was recently upheld by the Supreme Court <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-47959684">recently.</a> Earlier in April, the Supreme Court ruled that sex on the pretext of marriage is rape and a blow to the honour of a woman. She knows that she is going to have a very busy day. Today she plans to call almost 100 candidates as she needs to line up 25 interviews for day after. If she doesn’t, she has no hope of meeting her monthly target of 75 hires. This is not a one-off day. This has been happening to her ever since she joined. Priya hopes that one day someone will find a solution to her problem. 
 
Like Priya, most recruiters spend several hours calling candidates. This happens because there is no organized way to understand the real interest or suitability of the candidate to take up a particular job. Candidates who list themselves on popular portals get disproportionate attention from employers. They receive lots of job related calls. At the entry level, saying no to a job is almost like a taboo. So these candidates agree to attend the interview but finally do not turn up. Recruiters waste lot of time chasing these non-interested candidates. The uncertainty around whether the candidate will attend the interview makes the process expensive and unreliable. 
 
Behavioral analytics can potentially address this issue. The behavior of the candidate demonstrates the true intent of the candidate which may be very different from stated intent. Behavioral analytics can be used in two ways: 
 
1) Judging preference of the candidate based on past behavior and then using the preference to find the appropriate job 
 
If the candidate’s pattern of applying for jobs, attending interviews and browsing jobs is studied, it can throw light on her/his preferences with respect to role, industry and location. E.g. A candidate applies for MIS executive back office role in Whitefield area of Bangalore. The person then applies for another back-office role in MarthaHalli (near Whitefield). With these two data-points, one can conclude with some confidence that the person will consider a back-office job near Whitefield. However, even this data may not be sufficient. The candidate may have a minimum salary in mind. As the data becomes richer, the insights become stronger and more predictive. 
 
The behavior can also be used to predict a negative bias. If the person does not attend an interview for BPO job twice in a row even after confirming to the recruiter but attends interviews in other industries, then we can conclude that the candidate may not be interested in a BPO job. 
 
Behavioral analytics can be used to understand these tacit preferences and then drive effective match making using these preferences. 
 
2) Understanding ‘real’ interest in a particular job 
 
When the jobseeker applies for a job and enters the recruitment funnel, he has a certain level of interest for the job. But this is not sufficient. The interest and the energy has to be sustained throughout the recruitment process. A positive response by the jobseeker to a ‘call to action (CTA)’ is a good indication that the person is genuinely interested. When several of these CTAs are spaced out through the recruitment funnel, the recruiter understands the jobseeker interest at every stage. Some such actions are: Confirming intent to attend the interview by sending a sms, uploading a resume to update her / his profile 
 
The biggest challenge in this approach is the availability of reliable data. For a recruiter with a company, this data is hard to get as she is not exposed to the candidate’s interactions with other companies. Only an intermediary/marketplace can collect this data with a fair degree of accuracy. Even for intermediaries, this requires a complete change in mindset from looking at a snapshot to carefully collecting and collating data for job seekers. In a sense, the intermediary becomes the ‘credit bureau’ of employment space. 
 
Behavioral analytics has been creating waves in other sectors. It could be the next big disruption in the recruitment space that will hopefully make Priyas of the world happy.

However, the success of start-ups in the recent past has led to an incessant rise in the popularity of start-ups. However, the shortage of spaces in coming-of-age cities has always been a problem, to solve which, there was a need of <keyword id="358590" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Micro-Markets">micro markets</keyword>. 
 
And now, the growing demand for commercial space from start-ups in India has led to a 10% increase in the rentals of the hubs for these companies, as per the real estate services firm CBRE. 
 
"The cities that led the demand include Bengaluru and Gurgaon. By 2020, there will be 11,500 startups, employing over 250,000 people," Ram Chandnani, managing director-transaction services at CBRE South Asia, told ET. 
 
Out of the total demand for office market, nearly 10% is driven by ecommerce companies, which barely existed about two years ago. However, in 2015, these companies leased 4.3 million sq ft as compared to 0.54 million sq ft in 2014, said CBRE data. 
 
"At a time when quality supply is drying up in the market, the additional demand coming in from e-commerce has surely had a positive effect on the rental values of key ecommerce favourite micro markets like Mumbai's Eastern Suburbs, Whitefield in Bengaluru and NH8 in Gurgaon," Ramesh Nair, COO, business and international director at JLL India, told ET. 
 
The demand from e-commerce is generally directed towards quality Grade A spaces that provide large floor plates in the peripheral business districts of various cities. These cities include Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. 
 
"We have been seeing active interest from e-commerce companies, which are now an important segment of our overall portfolio. It is a small but interesting new area and we have been looking at different solutions to respond to this segment," Mike Holland, CEO of Embassy Office Parks, a JV between Embassy Group and Blackstone, told ET.

Rent for commercial start-ups spaces sees 10% rise because of high demand

Challenges like uneven roads, low spending capacity and lack of government support still act as hurdles to the electric vehicles becoming a mass market product. When it comes to manufacturing Electric Vehicles like scooters, start-ups like <keyword id="2622993" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="ather-energy">Ather Energy</keyword> learnt the hard way of how slow the process can get. The company announced its <keyword id="935733" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="made-in-india">Made-In-India</keyword> electric vehicle S-340 in February 2016 and anticipated roll out this year as it had a functional vehicle model to boast of. What they realized quickly is that the supporting infrastructure wasn’t ready and their initial goal of distribution in 2017 would get stalled due to inefficiencies in the manufacturing process. Another issue was the validation of the vehicle which can take a very long time. “We have gone through several iterations of the same working vehicle. We started fixing our supply chain as every unique part we make needs a vendor to produce it in bulk. Getting contracts in place and talking to hundreds of vendors has delayed production beyond our imagination. Our plant should now be ready for production in 2018 after which we will start shipping,” <keyword id="1442828" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tarun-mehta">Tarun Mehta</keyword>, CEO, Ather Energy told Business Insider. Ather Energy plant’s capacity is about 30,000 units and the company has put out an elaborate plan to retail the vehicles. Initially consumers will be provided with a lot of data, information and content and the company will target cities like <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> and Chennai where infrastructure and awareness for Electric Vehicles has slowly been building. “The government has been supportive of the electric vehicle mission and is making strong statements by passing legislations that support electric vehicle production. When we go to manufacturers and ask them to make new parts for electric vehicles, they realize that this is the future and are complaint to the new requirements,” says Mehta who has been supportive of the state’s encouragement in terms of subsidies. R&amp;D infrastructure and first Designing in India “As most of the auto industry will get affected in the next two decades due to the Electric Vehicle revolution, the government needs to encourage Original Equipment Manufacturers to invest in more Research and Development. We don’t have manufacturing companies for most of the components for electric vehicles like Lithium ion batteries which can be easily manufactured in the country,” Mehta laments that most of the cost occurs in importing the special batteries that aren’t manufactured in India. Ather Energy imports cells from abroad but the company designs, manufactures and distribute the battery packs in their factory in Whitefield, Bengaluru. Mehta predicts that in an individual electric scooter at scale the battery cost can go upto Rs. 40,000 out of which the government can save Rs. 15,000 by manufacturing it locally. The Lithium ion battery cells are a common requirement in most electric vehicles whether its from companies like <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> or Mahindra &amp; Mahindra. India currently imports 100% of Lithium-ion cells and M&amp;M has stated a potential loss of Rs. 200,000 per vehicle amounting towards a total of Rs. 30 million against supplying 150 e-Veritos, which is not a good sign. Lithium ion cells manufacturing can be really expensive for a start-up and it is a project that ideally the government can take up with foreign partners.Even if the government undertakes a small investment in Lithium ion cells, it can take away the <keyword id="6358355" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex">Forex</keyword> risk out completely as it will result in encouraging further investments. Running Electric Vehicles on Indian roads is mighty for start-ups like Ather Energy who are trying to Make-In-India

Speaking at the 'Invest Karnataka 2016' meet here, Ambani said the proposed centre, to be set up under Reliance Defence, will generate more than 1,500 highly skilled jobs and support government's plan for indigenous design, development and manufacturing of defence equipments. Reliance Group, he said has so far invested nearly Rs 5,000 crore in Karnataka across a wide array of sectors, from telecom to energy to entertainment to <keyword id="6354241" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Financial-Services">financial services</keyword> and now defence, and created nearly 5,000 jobs. 
 "But we are ready for much more. And I am here today to make a big commitment in that direction by announcing <keyword id="6418409" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dhirubhai-Ambani">Dhirubhai Ambani</keyword> Centre for Innovation and Research in Aerospace," he said. "We are proposing to set up a Global Centre of Aerospace Excellence here in Whitefield, Bengaluru." 
 
Stating that Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft and Sixth Generation technologies are already finding applications, he said the centre, the first-ever of its kind in the private sector in India, will be a world class facility for research, development and innovation in aerospace technology. 
"For India to emerge as a strong Military power, it is important that we cut down our dependencies for military hardware. It is even more important that we start developing and designing the cutting edge systems," he said. 
 
Ambani said the centre will also support the Government's "plan to accord the highest priority for Indigenous Design, Development and Manufacturing (IDDM) for Defence equipment." 
 
Last month, Ambani had announced setting up of a new naval shipbuilding acility with an initial investment of Rs 5,000 crore in Andhra Pradesh. 
 The facility, to be set up at Rambilli along the East Coast near Vizag, would also lead to creation of a multi-tier array of defence ancillaries with further <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> of Rs 5,000-10,000 crore and thousands of skilled jobs, he had said.

Reliance Group to set up Global centre for Aerospace Technology innovation in Bengaluru

Growing up with dyslexia (developmental reading disorder) and attention deficit disorder (ADD), Kopf would often get taken out of class to finish exams in a quiet room. When reading an essay, he would get a special machine that covered the bottom part of the book because he could only read one line at a time. He struggled to keep up with all the homework due dates.
It wasn't until he met a teacher named Mrs. Whitefield in high school that he was able to regain his confidence. She would sit for hours with him after school, reviewing his essays. Having that relationship with a teacher who was patient and really cared about him drastically improved his grades.
"When I first started the company, I thought to myself, if I could make the Ms. Whitefields of the world more efficient and help them as teachers, it could have an enormous impact on the education system," Kopf told Business Insider.
But it was only after he got into college that his vision for a classroom communication app really started to materialize. Overwhelmed with all the class syllabi and due dates, Kopf one day told his brother, David, he wished there was a way to get reminders before assignments were due. With very basic coding knowledge, David came up with a simple, Excel-based, SMS notification program that would send text messages before an exam or an assignment was due.
The program worked so well that Kopf was able to sign up roughly 2,000 students from his college by late 2010. He says students would constantly thank him for coming up with such a cool idea. But after two years, the growth stalled and the Kopf brothers realized it wasn't going anywhere. They decided to shut it down.
But they still believed in the idea of a classroom communication app. So they joined Imagine K12, a startup incubator focused on education tech. It was there where they learned the basic fundamentals of a successful business: build a simple product; talk to users; and solve someone's problem.
While David was busy learning how to code, locking himself in a room for 16 hours a day, Brett went out to meet teachers and hear what their real needs were. He would search for hundreds of teachers on Google and Twitter, and just try to learn what they were using in the classroom to communicate. He quickly realized things were very archaic. For example, some teachers were attaching a sticky note on the student's shoulder after school that said, "Homework's due tomorrow."
So they started with the basic idea of alerting students of homework or exams. At first, David wasn't completely sold on the idea. But after overhearing Brett's Skype call with a teacher one day, he was convinced. "Brett was holding a paper with three boxes, explaining if you press this, it does this. And the teachers would freak out! They were saying, 'Oh my god, if only you could do that...'" David told us.

Teachers can also send motivational messages, via text or a 15-second voice mail, and even run surveys to get instant feedback on things like a field trip. It creates a direct communication channel between the teachers, students, and parents, so everyone could help each other more effectively.
Since then the app's popularity has absolutely exploded. By September 2013, Remind had six million users with roughly 65 million messages being sent. Today, Remind claims to have 18 million users across the country, with at least 25% of all teachers in the US using its app. In August, it was adding 365,000 new users a day, making it one of the top 3 most downloaded apps in the iOS AppStore. It says more than 50,000 people are joining the app every day. Just this week, it had its one billionth message sent - all without any real marketing.
It's why some of the most powerful venture capitalists, including Social Capital's Chamath Palihapitiya and Kleiner Perkins' John Doerr, have invested in Remind. Just this September, Remind raised $40 million, raising its total funding to $59 million.
At first glance, Remind may seem like a simple product that anyone could copy. But there's a reason it's been so successful in the ed tech space, a historically tough industry to break into. There's an enormous amount of data science going on behind the scenes, based on constant feedback from teachers, parents, and students. In fact, Remind recently hired a bunch of data scientists from Facebook who played big roles during the social media's early growth days.
Kopf says Remind is not focused on making money at this point, as he'd rather see more growth and engagement. Eventually, he'll roll out premium features, but for now, he says he's just focused on his initial vision: connecting every student, teacher, and parent in the world to improve education.
"We live in a day where you can click a button and call Uber, or get a pizza delivered in two minutes. But if your kid is failing in school, you might not find out for three months," Kopf says. "And we want to solve that problem."
