"One would have to open WhatsApp on their smartphones and scan their fingerprint to initiate the web session of their PC," the report said on Thursday. The new way of logging into WhatsApp's web and desktop apps has some important advantages -- it's much more secure and a lot faster. It's not clear though if Face Unlock support will also be added in the future for devices that support 3D Face Unlocks. The current method of authentication involves using your phone's camera to scan an on-screen QR code to gain access to your account. In addition, WhatsApp is reportedly bringing a fix for a bug that caused the removal of recently used emojis after the app is updated. The feature has been spotted in WhatsApp 2.20.200.10 beta for Android updates. Passkeys were previously being tested by WhatsApp in its beta channel, but it's now coming to regular users. Android support will roll out over the coming weeks and months, according to the company. Passkeys can replace traditional passwords with your device's own authentication methods. Google last week prompted users to shun passwords on their accounts in favour of passkeys. Even India is considering new regulations that will allow it to ask technology companies like WhatsApp to break end-to-end encryption in an attempt to filter out ‘unlawful content’. Even that was subtly put to rest when WhatsApp’s data backup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/whatsapp-data-may-shift-to-the-cloud-but-may-no-longer-be-as-encrypted/articleshow/65475359.cms">shifted to cloud</a>, no longer necessitating end-to-end encryption of communication. In 2014, hackers working for the Chinese government and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/24/world/asia/hackers-took-fingerprints-of-5-6-million-us-workers-government-says.html">made off</a> with the personal data of more than 22 million Americans from the Office of Personnel Management — 5.6 million of those people had their fingerprints on file. Researchers at the Michigan State University were able to <a href="https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/machine-learning-masters-the-fingerprint-to-fool-biometric-systems/">print out</a> fake 3D fingerprints for less than $500. More tech-savvy researcher in Tokyo were able to <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2017/01/12/peace-sign-selfies-could-let-hackers-copy-fingerprints/">reconstruct a fingerprint</a> based on somebody posing with the ‘peace sign’ fingers on a photo taken from a distance of nine feet. Michigan State University’s Philip Bontrager told <a href="https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2018/machine-learning-masters-the-fingerprint-to-fool-biometric-systems/">USA Today</a>, “These experiments demonstrate the need for multi-factor authentication and should be a wake-up call for device manufacturers about the implications of artificial fingerprint attacks.” Facebook has been facing privacy issues since 2003 and is under pressure to prove its credibility as the world’s waits to see whether it upholds the standards set by Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Facebook’s trifles with privacy started out by leaking user data to online advertisers to help them understand their consumers — seemingly innocent in retrospect. Here’s how to enable fingerprint lock on WhatsApp for Android

WABetainfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp in Beta, has spotted Expiring Media as part of WhatsApp for Android's new beta version 2.20.201.1. This upcoming WhatsApp feature is similar to that found in <keyword id="6358096" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="snapchat">Snapchat</keyword>, which was later copied by Instagram. When this feature will be enabled, users will have an option to set expiration when they share media files, the report said. Those who will receive any "Expiring Media" can only view them for a single time and once they exit the chat, they will disappear without any trace unlike "This message was deleted" message when the sender deletes messages. The feature will be visible only to admins of a group. For individual chats, the feature will offer various options that the user can select for the app to automatically delete messages. WhatsApp will also show a ‘timer' symbol on the profile picture when the feature is enabled in a specific chat. Currently, there is no word on when exactly the feature will arrive for users or whether or not users will be able to screenshot the same. Once available, the earlier ‘Expiring Message' feature which is also in Beta currently will come with a toggle on/off button and users can choose a stipulated time -- 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year -- for the messages to automatically disappear. Improved group privacy settings The group privacy settings were spotted in the beta version of WhatsApp early in the year. Recently, the app started rolling out this feature. The new group privacy setting allows users to select who can add them to groups. Users have the option to select between ‘Everyone’, ‘My Contacts’ and ‘My Contacts Except’. Audio picker WhatsApp rolled out the audio picker feature earlier this year that makes it easier to share multiple audio files at once. Users can also play the audio file before sending it to others. The update also introduced audio preview and image preview, allowing users to listen to the audio and view the album art of the file while selecting them. Group call button After introducing group calls earlier, WhatsApp this year added a dedicated group call button to group chats. This button allows users to pick up to four participants and directly place a group call from a group chat. Forwarded and Frequently Forwarded labels WhatsApp initially introduced a ‘Forwarded’ label to messages that were forwarded from one chat to another. Later, the company introduced the ‘Frequently Forwarded’ label that is added to a message that has been forwarded more than four times. The introduction of these labels from WhatsApp aims to fight fake news. There have been several cases where false information was shared on WhatsApp. Consecutive voice messages WhatsApp added consecutive voice message feature to both, Android and iOS versions of the app. This allows users to play consecutive voice messages automatically, instead of having to play each voice message manually. Private reply WhatsApp introduced the reply privately feature for groups. This allows users in groups to highlight a particular message in the group chat and reply privately to the sender of the message. Share WhatsApp status to Facebook As you may already know, WhatsApp is owned by Facebook. The app recently introduced a new feature that allows users to share their WhatsApp stories to Facebook Stories. Opi stickers Earlier this year, WhatsApp introduced a new Opi sticker pack designed by Colombian illustrator Oscar Ospina. The pack features a white colored bear expressing different emotions and includes as many as 30 stickers. Improved PiP mode WhatsApp also introduced an improved picture-in-picture mode for its app on Android and iOS. This allows users to play videos from YouTube, Facebook and Instagram even after switching chats. After a recent update, users can now also play Netflix trailers using the picture-in-picture mode. WhatsApp Business WhatsApp for Business was launched as a dedicated app to allow businesses to connect to their customers. It is available in India, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, the UK, and the US and is expected to rollout to other countries soon. All features added to the messaging app this year

In order to link WhatsApp Web or <keyword id="154909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Desktop">Desktop</keyword> to your WhatsApp account, you will now be asked to use your face or fingerprint unlock on your phone, before scanning a QR code from the phone to link your device. The new security update for linking devices will be rolling out, alongside a visual redesign to the WhatsApp Web page on phones, to users with compatible devices over the coming weeks. "We're putting even more security into WhatsApp Web and desktop, adding an additional layer of protection when you want to link your WhatsApp account to your computer," the company said in a statement. The move, said WhatsApp, will limit the chance that a housemate or office colleague can link devices to your WhatsApp account without you. "This builds on our existing security measures today, which pop up a notice in your phone whenever a Web/Desktop login occurs, and the ability to unlink devices from your phone at any time," the company noted. WhatsApp said the face and fingerprint authentication takes place on your device in a privacy preserving manner -- by design. "WhatsApp cannot access the biometric information stored by your device's operating system". The move comes at a time when WhatsApp is facing immense backlash in India over its upcoming privacy policy. In mid-January, it was found that WhatsApp on Desktop (Web) application was allegedly exposing personal mobile numbers via indexing on <keyword id="163945" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Search">Google Search</keyword>. Independent cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia had shared some screenshots with IANS showing indexing of personal mobile numbers of WhatsApp users via Web version on Google Search. Concerned at private group chat links being available on Google Search, WhatsApp had earlier said that it asked Google not to index such chats and advised users not to share group chat links on publicly accessible websites. The indexed WhatsApp group chat links have now been removed from Google. WhatsApp to add additional security layer for users to link account to computers

Google is moving towards a password-less future as it has started making passkeys the default option for personal Google accounts. The search giant had announced passkeys earlier this year. Passkeys will allow users to sign in using a fingerprint, a face scan or a screen lock PIN. Users will soon be asked to create and use passkeys when they sign in to their Google account. Passkeys may soon replace passwords - everything you need to know

App Lock adds another layer of security to private messages. The optional feature gives users "confidence to know that if a friend or family member needs to borrow your phone, they won't be able to access your chats". "Privacy is at the heart of Messenger - where you can be yourself with the people who matter most to you, whether that's through a message, video chat, call or a Messenger Room," said Jay Sullivan, Director of Product Management, Messenger Privacy and Safety. App Lock, present in the new Privacy settings section, will use device's privacy settings like fingerprint or face authentication to unlock the Messenger app. "Your touch or face ID is not transmitted to or stored by Facebook. The feature is available today on iPhone and iPad and will come to Android in the next few months," Sullivan said in a statement on Wednesday. Facebook said it is also working on new controls so Messenger users can decide who can message or call them directly, who goes to their requests folder, and who can't message or call them at all. This will be similar to the message controls on Instagram. "We're also exploring more ways to protect your privacy and safety when someone you don't know sends you a message," said Facebook. The social network will test a feature similar to what exists on Instagram and WhatsApp that blurs images in the message requests folder. This will give Messenger users the choice to view an image from someone they may not know before replying to the message or blocking or reporting the account. There are over 1.3 billion Messenger users globally and Messenger is expected to grow to 2.4 billion users by 2021.
