The seasonally adjusted S&amp;P Global India Services <keyword id="104215" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pmi" source="Orion">PMI</keyword> Business Activity Index fell to 54.3 in September, from 57.2 in August, highlighting the weakest rate of expansion since March. For the fourteenth straight month, the services sector witnessed an expansion in output. In Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion, while a score below 50 denotes contraction. "The Indian service sector has overcome many adversities in recent months, with the latest PMI data continuing to show a strong performance despite some loss of growth momentum in September," said <keyword id="2835710" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pollyanna-de-lima" source="Orion">Pollyanna De Lima</keyword>, Economics Associate Director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. The upturn was reportedly restricted by price pressures, an increasingly competitive environment and unfavourable public policies, the survey said. <keyword id="15735" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lima" source="Orion">Lima</keyword> further noted that the steep depreciation of the rupee seen towards the end of the month due to interest rate hikes in the US present additional challenges to the Indian economy. "Currency instability poses renewed inflation worries as imported items become more costly, and undoubtedly means that the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> will continue hiking interest rates to protect the rupee and contain price pressures," Lima said. On September 30, the monetary policy committee (<keyword id="6369693" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mpc" source="Orion">MPC</keyword>) of the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) raised the key lending rate or the repo rate to 5.90 per cent - the highest since April 2019. The MPC also decided to remain focused on the withdrawal of the accommodative policy stance to ensure that inflation remains within the target going forward, while supporting growth, RBI Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> said. According to Lima, an upturn in inflation could damage consumer spending, dampen business confidence and test the resilience of the Indian service sector in the coming months but, at least for September, service providers were strongly upbeat towards growth prospects. The survey further noted that weak external demand weighed on overall sales, with international orders declining further in September. Monthly contractions have been recorded in each month since the onset of COVID-19. The data highlighted a continued revival in business confidence, with sentiment at its highest level in over seven-and-a-half years. Service providers signalled a further increase in their operating expenses during September, owing to higher energy, food, labour and material costs. On the employment front, though capacity pressures moderated in September, efforts to clear pending workloads and ongoing expansions in sales supported another round of job creation. However, employment rose at a slower rate than in August, the survey said. Meanwhile, the S&amp;P Global India Composite PMI Output Index -- which measures combined services and manufacturing output -- slipped from 58.2 in August to 55.1 in September, pointing to the weakest rate of expansion since March. Private sector sales rose at the weakest pace in six months, amid softer increases in the manufacturing and services economies. The S&amp;P Global India Services PMI® is compiled by S&amp;P Global from responses to questionnaires sent to a panel of around 400 service sector companies. The panel is stratified by detailed sector and company workforce size, based on contributions to GDP. Data collection began in December 2005. "The construct of this collaboration is not meant to be exclusive," <keyword id="3056724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajit-Mohan">Ajit Mohan</keyword>, vice-president and managing director of Facebook India, told reporters via a concall after the US-based social media giant announced an investment of Rs 43,574 crore to buy a 9.99 per cent stake in Jio Platforms. The two sides "genuinely believe" there are exciting opportunities to work together and broaden the avenue for economic expansion, with first focus on small businesses, Mohan said. To a query on whether Facebook could also look at other partnerships on the retail side with companies, say, Amazon or Flipkart, Mohan said, "The platforms remain open... it is non-exclusive and it is not meant to keep anyone away." Elaborating on the deal, Anshuman Thakur, head of strategy, Reliance Jio, said, "At this point, we have identified merchant, SME (small and medium enterprise) commerce as something we can collaborate and we can benefit from what WhatApp already does very well... We will similarly find areas where the skill sets may be more complementary but this investment or partnership does not mean that we will not compete in the market." He added, "There will be things where we will be directly competing with each other also in the market, the entities are independent of each other in every respect." The deal does not, in any way, amend or change business models for the companies, he said. "We have our suite of products and services, the same way that Facebook has its own suite of products and services and we are going to make best use for our respective companies," Thakur added. Facebook will get a seat on board on Jio Platform Ltd, the company it is investing in, along with an observer seat. Once the investment comes in, Rs 15,000 crore will be retained in Jio Platforms Ltd while the rest will be used to redeem OCPS (optionally convertible preference shares) of <keyword id="6487" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries-Ltd">Reliance Industries Ltd</keyword>. "In that sense, the entire amount does go to reduce debt of the Group... Jio Platforms Ltd has been valued at an enterprise value of Rs 4.62 lakh crore. The debt in the company is around Rs 40,000 crore. With this investment, Rs 15000 crore will be retained in the company and balance will be used to redeem OCPS investments of RIL in this company," he said. Cryptography is detail-oriented and complicated, and often summaries can get important aspects wrong, but here goes: Messaging systems need to know if the person it's sending a message to is actually who he says he is. But WhatsApp decided that if one messenger changed his security key, then it would simply give the user a warning - instead of blocking him entirely like some secure messengers do, it would simply display a warning, like this:<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Whisper Systems</div></div></div> This decision led The Guardian to speculate that a government might be able to pull off "man-in-the-middle" attacks and hijack messages meant for another person. Marlinspike explains: Most end-to-end encrypted communication systems have something that resembles this type of verification, because otherwise an attacker who compromised the server could lie about a user's public key, and instead advertise a key which the attacker knows the corresponding private key for. This is called a "man in the middle" attack, or MITM, and is endemic to public key cryptography, not just WhatsApp.In fact, WhatsApp made a security choice based on usability, because it has 1 billion users, and shutting down people's conversations could be annoying for its users. Even worse, it could make the entire system less secure. Cryptographers have to make trade-offs all the time. Given the size and scope of WhatsApp's user base, we feel that their choice to display a non-blocking notification is appropriate. It provides transparent and cryptographically guaranteed confidence in the privacy of a user's communication, along with a simple user experience. The choice to make these notifications "blocking" would in some ways make things worse. That would leak information to the server about who has enabled safety number change notifications and who hasn't, effectively telling the server who it could MITM transparently and who it couldn't; something that WhatsApp considered very carefully.If you're worried about the privacy of your communications, WhatsApp remains a better choice than many of its alternatives, such as Telegraph. However, for users that want best-in-class, Open Whisper Systems' Signal messenger usually optimizes for security, not usability, and it remains whistleblower Edward Snowden's favorite messenger.WhatsApp provided the following comment to Business Insider:The Guardian's story on an alleged "backdoor" in WhatsApp is false.WhatsApp does not give governments a "backdoor" into its systems.WhatsApp would fight any government request to create a backdoor.Since April 2016, WhatsApp messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default. When you have turned this setting on, WhatsApp will notify you every time the person you're communicating with changes a key.Of course, if you are concerned that you're communicating with someone who isn't who they say they are, there are things you can do. If you have "Show Security Notifications" enabled and receive a notification of a key change, send an initial message and wait for the blue checkmarks. Google may seek to change this truth. The creator of the Android platform acquired an app-streaming service called Agawi in 2014, and recent statements obtained by <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/Google-s-War-Against-Apps">The Information</a> (paywall) indicate Google is working toward enabling apps that are streamed to mobile devices rather than apps that are housed on the devices themselves.<ul><li>For something like this to work, Google would have to create a portal through which consumers access these services, which could be housed within the Google Play store or launched as a standalone app. This would bring governance of online services back under Google's purview after much of it shifted to apps in the past few years.</li><li>This isn't an entirely new concept. Google's been toying around with an idea for playable demos that Google Now product chief Aparna Chennapragada calls the "progressive commitment model." This strategy would enable people to "date" apps before "marrying" them, which in normal terms means that users would have access to a "try before you buy [or download]" system. Agawi has been building out technology to create this capability, with a focus on cross-platform functionality. </li></ul>As for what Google has to gain from such a move, this would probably be a great move for consumers, a so-so move for developers, and a bad move for other tech platform giants. Users would save space on their devices and get to test out apps before investing their data allotments and money into an app they may not actually like, developers wouldn't be severely impacted as long as commerce models would be able to work through an app streaming portal, and platforms like Facebook and Apple would lose some of their own power.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>The biggest potential game-changer of such a model is the homogenization of OSs; If apps can be streamed from one location it may theoretically be easier for developers to create an app iteration that is compatible with several mobile OSs. More likely, the streaming app portal could be downloaded on devices running different OSs and act as a sort of virtual environment to run apps. Apple's iOS store, which just lost dominance in terms of number of apps available, would stand to lose the most (see chart).However, this idea is still premature. The ability to stream apps, particularly gaming apps with heavy graphics and functions, in their entirety is no easy task and won't become a perfect science in the near term. While streaming for a "try before you buy" model is feasible, uprooting the entire app ecosystem through a streaming portal is a long way off. Finding this article interesting? Using Wi-Fi networks and small cells to offload data requests from the main network (such as 4G) will become increasingly crucial in the years to come.<ul><li>While developed markets continue to roll out 4G/LTE networks, these advanced data networks aren't quite pervasive and it's still common for high volumes to severely congest networks. Offloading data from a 4G connection to Wi-Fi or small cells would free up the main network.</li></ul><ul><li>Emerging markets with high growth will have mobile data demands that outpace the ability for telecoms to develop infrastructure and deploy new networks. Wi-Fi will play a big hand in alleviating some of these connectivity issues.</li></ul>A greater reliance on Wi-Fi could challenge the business model used by telecoms and effectively further diminish already dipping average revenue per user (ARPU) incomes. By 2019 ARPU with be less than 80% of the value it was in 2013, according to Juniper's forecast. This is particularly notable in light of the large investments telecoms must make in spectrum purchases and infrastructure to better their existing 3G/4G networks and prepare for the impending entry of 5G, estimated to hit the commercial market in 2020.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>ANDROID ONE HAS BEEN A DISAPPOINTMENT: Back at the Google I/O developer conference in June 2014, Google officially unveiled the Android One project, a program in which Google would work hand-in-hand with low-cost smartphone manufacturers in emerging markets. The goal of the program is to provide manufacturers with hardware specifications that these companies can use to easily build the most cost-effective smartphone devices, which run the stock Android operating system, similar to the OS found on Google Nexus devices. But the program has failed to take off, mostly because manufacturers have been reluctant to continue participating in the program after mediocre sales, according to <a href="http://recode.net/2015/06/11/beset-with-failures-google-tries-to-breathe-new-life-into-android-one/" target="_blank">Re/Code</a>. There were 700,000 Android One handsets shipped in the first month of the program, and only 700,000 more in the subsequent five moths. Mostly, Google's strategy to target rising domestic manufacturers in emerging markets, like Micromax in India, backfired because Android One offered less profit on sales than other options and limited product differentiation to these fast-growing global players. Android One is Google's answer to the proliferation of devices that run a more bare-bones version of the Android mobile operating system, the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). These devices became popular in emerging markets where first-time smartphone users looked for a low-cost option. Widespread use of AOSP devices posed a significant threat to Google and its mobile services in 2014, and with the subdued performance of Android One, that threat may not be alleviated for some time. In the fourth quarter of 2014, AOSP devices took 22% of global smartphone shipments worldwide. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>MOBILE WEB STILL WINNING MOBILE NEWS CONSUMPTION: Following last month's Pew Research <a href="http://www.journalism.org/2015/04/29/state-of-the-news-media-2015/">report</a>that mobile devices accounted for the majority of traffic for most news sites, an exhaustive new <a href="http://www.digitalnewsreport.org/survey/2015/executive-summary-and-key-findings-2015/">report</a> from Reuters lends some color to how just how mobile news is being consumed. Two-thirds of all smartphone users in the 12 countries studied (US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Urban Brazil, Australia) use their smartphones to access the news every week. Here's how consumers access mobile news:<ul><li>The mobile web is still winning in mobile news consumption, with most respondents (except those in the UK) stating they more frequently read news in a mobile browser than within an app. This may indicate that consumers are finding news links in email and social media networks and clicking through to their locations in their mobile web browsers. New products from Facebook and Apple might change that by hosting news content within an app rather than redirecting readers to the mobile web. </li><li>News-specific apps are rarely used. Just 33% of survey respondents use a news app installed on their smartphones in a given week.</li><li>Consumers aren't using just smartphones. Large portions of consumers in most markets use more than one device to access news on a weekly basis. 45% of consumers in the US use 2 or more devices, 44% in the UK, and 59% in Denmark.Social networks and mobile messaging apps have a small but growing hand in news consumption. 41% of users access news from Facebook on an average week. ~12% do so on Twitter, and ~9% on WhatApp.</li></ul>Notably, for most countries search is the most common starting point for accessing news stories, and mobile notifications and alerts take a much smaller piece of that pie (see chart, below). Despite the comparatively small role mobile push notifications play in news discovery, their current share is the result of significant growth over the past year, from ~6% in 2014 to ~13% in 2015. It's likely that the importance of notifications in driving mobile news discovery will continue to increase as wrist-worn devices like the Apple Watch become more pervasive in the consumer market.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>CONSUMERS SPENDING MORE TIME IN APPS: The number of apps a smartphone user visits in a standard month is declining slightly as the average time spent in apps makes gains, according to new data from <a href="http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/news/2015/so-many-apps-so-much-more-time-for-entertainment.html">Nielsen</a>. iPhone and Android users over the age of 18 in the US spent an average of 30 hours or more per month in apps during the fourth quarter of 2014, but the number of apps the average mobile user accesses each month has plateaued at roughly 27.This development is important in the context of the recent movement toward "app unbundling," in which tech companies tend to package specific services into standalone apps to provide users with a more tailored experience.App unbundling may prove successful in emerging markets, where users look to more streamlined apps that take up less storage capacity and suck up less cellular data. But this US data shows that in developed markets, users seem to stick to a reliable pool of robust apps to complete their tasks.
