A day after <keyword id="22541950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="West-Bengal-potato-traders" source="keywords">West Bengal potato traders</keyword> called off their indefinite strike, dispatch of tubers from <keyword id="722255" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cold-storages" source="Orion">cold storages</keyword> surged by 30-35 per cent to fill the demand vacuum, officials said on Thursday. The traders' body said they would continue to adjust supplies in an effort to stabilise prices. "Since last night, around 8 lakh packets of 50kg each have been dispatched compared to the normal daily average of 6 lakh packets," said <keyword id="22541952" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Progressive-Potato-Traders-Association" source="Orion">Progressive Potato Traders' Association</keyword> secretary Lalu Mukherjee on Thursday. He assured the state government of adequate supply and asserted that traders would refrain from exporting the produce to other states for now, as the government has pledged to address local concerns first. Rabindranath Kole from the Traders Forum and a state task force member said, "The news of the strike withdrawal has led to some price reduction, but a significant decrease will be seen at the wholesale level, which hovered at Rs 34 per kg, once the produce hits the market in sufficient quantities." The <keyword id="477093" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="potato-traders" source="Orion">potato traders</keyword> went on strike on July 21 in protest against alleged harassment by the state government and local administrations in exporting the tuber to other states. "The strike had been withdrawn. Agriculture Marketing Minister Becharam Manna had assured us on behalf of the state government of an amicable solution," Mukherjee said on Wednesday. To mitigate the strike's impact, the West Bengal government had earlier decided to engage self-help groups (SHGs) to sell <keyword id="6399610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="potatoes" source="Orion">potatoes</keyword> at affordable prices. "Strike by the <keyword id="22905" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="potato" source="Orion">potato</keyword> traders has been withdrawn, and they have assured the government they will help reduce the prices of the tuber in the local market before exporting to other states," said Manna. According to Manna, cold storages and traders have assured the government of supplying potatoes at Rs 26 per kg at the cold storage level. This should help bring down the price to close to Rs 30 per kg for the non-premium Jyoti variety. "There is an assurance from cold storage units that they will supply potatoes at Rs 26 per kg. We will ensure that the supply is not disrupted," Manna added. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had recently directed officials to take steps to control the prices of vegetables, including potatoes. Task forces formed by the state government have been conducting raids in markets to prevent hoarding. The strike had spiked potato prices in retail markets between Rs 40 and Rs 45 per kg.

Potato dispatches from West Bengal's cold storages surge by 35% a day after traders withdraw strike

Kolkata, Potato prices, which soared by 30-40 per cent to Rs 24-25 for the 'Jyoti' variety in the last fortnight due to reasons like lower crop yield and shortage of labourers during Holi holidays, are expected to ease to Rs 20-21 a kg in a week, according to an official. 'Jyoti' and its variants are mass-selling varieties, while the premium 'Chandramukhi' variety rose to Rs 30. Local shopkeepers and markets attributed the price rise of potatoes to the upcoming <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections. It is commonly understood that during elections, traders have to contribute donations to political parties, which are then passed on to customers. Industry officials, however, ruled out this rationale. "I think from next week onward, the price of potatoes should gradually go down to Rs 20-21 a kg. There had been an acute shortage of labourers due to the Holi holidays, and there had been some loss of crops due to sudden rain, which led to the rise," West Bengal Vendors' Association president <keyword id="20012942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kamal-dey" source="keywords">Kamal Dey</keyword> told PTI. He said that the wholesale price in the Hooghly district market is Rs 16 a kg, and under no circumstances should the price be over Rs 22/kg in retail markets of Kolkata. De said that production in both Purba and Paschim <keyword id="20818097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bardhaman" source="keywords">Bardhaman</keyword> and <keyword id="21157466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="purba-medinipur" source="keywords">Purba Medinipur</keyword> districts faced low production due to untimely rain in December and then late blight disease. However, the crop in Hooghly was good, which helped offset the tentative production loss in Bengal to an estimated 10 per cent. Otherwise, production would have been lower by 20-30 per cent, he said. Dey said a lot of potatoes sold in the market as 'Jyoti' are hybrid and other varieties that look similar. According to the Department of Agriculture's first advance estimates of output, onion and potato production are expected to be lower in the 2023-24 crop year. National potato production for 2023-24 is expected to be around 58.99 million tonnes, slightly lower than the previous year's production of approximately 60.14 million tonnes, it said.

Potato prices in Bengal likely to ease to ₹20-21 per kilo this week

Mumbai, Jul 15 () Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) has said it is seeking approval from market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India to re-launch potato futures contracts. "There is a need (of hedging) in sensitive commodities like pulses and sugar etc... We may soon be launching potato contracts," said Rishi Nathani, head of business development at MCX, while commenting on industry demand for robust farm futures trade in a webinar on agricultural reforms. The exchange has applied to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for permission to re-launch the potato contracts, he stated. MCX had a successful potato futures contract, few years ago, but it lost liquidity over a period of time due to which Forward Markets Commission, then regulator of the commodity derivatives market, asked MCX to stop trade in the contract in September 2014. In the webinar on agricultural reforms, organised jointly by MCX and Indian Merchants' Chamber (IMC), food business major ITC stressed on necessity of a robust hedging platform to hedge price risks in number of commodities as the period of lockdown saw crude falling over 70 per cent, palm oil 30 per cent, and corn, wheat and potato too saw huge volatility hurting FMCG companies. MCX seeks Sebi approval to re-launch potato contracts

 <keyword id="43826" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Trinamool-Congress">Trinamool Congress</keyword> general secretary <keyword id="71546" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mukul-Roy">Mukul Roy</keyword> had earlier requested the potato traders withdraw the strike as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would be in North Bengal from September 1. 
 
The state government had imposed a condition that the potato traders could export 700 tonnes per day to other states only if they supplied 300 tonnes of tubers to the government at Rs 12 per kilo. 
 
The Pragatishil Aloo Byabsayee Samiti, which is the largest association of the state’s potato traders, had called for the strike. 
The state government had imposed a ban on the supply of potatoes to other states due to the strike.

Bengal’s Potato Traders End Strike; Resume Supply To Neighbouring States

Kolkata, Jun 11 () The West Bengal government on Thursday said it will provide students of state-run schools with masks and soaps along with other items as part of the midday meal scheme from July to help them protect themselves from coronavirus. These students are getting rice and potato during the lockdown and from next month they will also receive daal, soybean, mask and soap, Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters. These items will be handed over to guardians of students from their schools. The minister said the government will also provide free text books, exercise books and pencils to students in Amphan-affected areas of the state. Chatterjee also requested private schools not to hike tuition fees in this academic session as people are facing financial hardship because of the lockdown. "Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had yesterday urged you (private schools) not to hike your fees this academic session. I am only repeating what she said," he said. SUS NN NN

Bengal government to add mask, soap to mid-day meal items in COVID-19 time

Potatoes, probably the most bought vegetable in India, would be costlier this year as the potato prices are likely to go up this year. This has happened because of an expected drop in output which in turn is the result of unfavourable weather conditions in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, top two states producing potatoes. 
 
As per reports from a potato growers' association, West Bengal production is expected to be 13.6% less than last year, while in UP, it is expected to be less by 10%. 
 
It is high time that Indian farmers get a way out to battle the changes in weather patterns, particularly rainfall. Local governments and research institutes must help farmers come up with ways to be sure of appropriate crops even as the weather goes against their luck.

Fewer potatoes on your plates this year

It’s still some days left for RBI’s monetary policy review scheduled for 5th April, but the past few weeks have seen the prices of several essential food items rising. These prices were still for almost a year, which is why it has suddenly become difficult for the common man to deal with this sudden <keyword id="67286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food-inflation">food inflation</keyword>. 
 
While chilli and potato prices are doubled, maize, wheat and soya bean have seen a hike of 4 to 10% in the last one month. Similarly, palm oil, which until recently was at its lowest price in five years, has seen a price rise of 10% y-o-y. 
 
Sugar prices, on the other hand, have gone high by 28% in six months, registering the max hike. 
 
Analysts blame a fall in output caused by a decrease in crop area and unfavourable weather conditions for this price rise. "Globally, sugar prices will continue to go up due to the weather problems," Prerana Desai, vice-president (research) at Edelweiss Agri Value Chain, told ET. 
 
"The next crop in India is expected to be short unless there is a surprise from UP. The prices will continue to move up in the next 12 to 24 months." 
 
While February saw a fall in food inflation to 5.3% from 6.85% in January, it also brought retail inflation within RBI's target of 6%. 
 
As for potato, farmers and traders say that prices have risen 50% in the last one month because acreage fell in West Bengal and UP and also because the late blight disease damaged a majority of crop.

Sky rocketing prices of potato, chilli bring tears

<ul><li>Food inflation was the major driver of June CPI which hit a three-month high.</li><li>Tomato price inflation was at 64%, onions at 8.1%, and potato at 10.5% on a sequential basis.</li><li>Retail prices of pulses reported double-digit growth for the third consecutive month.</li><li>On a sequential basis, wheat and rice inflation also picked pace in June. </li></ul>India’s <keyword id="513422" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-inflation" source="Orion">retail inflation</keyword> is at a three-month high in June at 4.8%, but it may not have reached its peak yet. Many climate related factors have been playing havoc with food inflation, and with most of North India under floods and this will only add to the pinch on the pocket, economists have warned. “Nine states had inflation above the average while six had above 5% — UP, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Kerala, Bihar and Haryana. The recent floods and landslides in the North will tend to push up inflation further in these states on the food side — especially vegetables and fruits which can add another 0.2% to headline inflation,” said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda. Food inflation is a heavyweight in consumer price inflation (CPI), and drove it up in June, even as core inflation cooled as compared to the last month. “Food inflation was the major driver for higher headline inflation print; up by 218 basis points month-on-month versus 67 basis points in the last month due to a 12% hike in vegetables prices,” said a report by Phillip Capital. Price shock: Grains join tomatoes Vegetable prices however are on top of everyone’s minds, and it could get worse as prices of tomatoes refuse to inch down. In June, its prices went up by 64%. But other key vegetables like onion were high too at 8.1%, and potato at 10.5% – on a sequential basis. A report by SBI Ecowrap says that the past 10 years data shows that tomato price increase alone did not influence the overall CPI inflation much — except when it is accompanied by substantial increase in price of potato and onion. “We believe if tomato price increase without any substantial change in potato and onion then average inflation in Q2 FY24 will come near 5.8% yoy but if the TOP (tomato, onion, potato) inflation increases, then CPI might come around 6% yoy in Q2 FY24. Accordingly, average CPI for FY24 will vary between 5.2-5.4%,” says SBI Ecowrap. Grains are not too far behind either. Cereal and pulses inflation remained elevated in June at 12.7% y-o-y and 10.5% y-o-y, respectively. Retail prices of pulses, especially that of tur dal, have risen 24% y-o-y in June, reporting double-digit growth for the third consecutive month. Moreover, the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/india-sows-more-millets-and-less-rice-this-kharif-season/articleshow/101642365.cms"> sowing in rice and pulses is lower this Kharif season</a> due to delayed monsoons, and that doesn’t bode well for their prices which too are seeing upward pressure. “On a sequential basis, wheat and rice inflation also picked pace in June. Looking ahead, the sale of wheat and rice from the government’s buffer stock via Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) auctions could help cool retail prices of rice, wheat and atta. However, with regards to rice prices, deficient monsoons in West Bengal, a key rice-producing state, could impact sowing, putting upward pressure on prices,” said a report by CareEdge. Milk inflation moderated in June to 8.6% as compared to 8.9%. But it continues to remain sticky above 8%, reeling from the impact of a continued demand-supply mismatch and high fodder costs. “Milk prices could remain higher in the coming months, if unabating cereal inflation keeps cattle feed expensive,” CareEdge says. WPI is comforting, say experts RBI insisted in the last two monetary policy committee meeting updates that its decision to hold key interest rates is a pause not a pivot. Most experts had been hoping that it would go for rate cuts in the second half of the year, but the inflation picture is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/with-inflation-cooling-rbi-may-slash-interest-rates-by-50-bps-this-financial-year/articleshow/100531780.cms">putting cold water on their hopes</a>. “While food prices will create inflationary pressures in the upcoming months due to uneven distribution of monsoon and lower kharif sowing, RBI stance would not be solely contingent on seasonal food inflation,” said Phillip Capital. Even at 4.8%, inflation is within the tolerance band of RBI, which is 4-6%. “The RBI will keep a keen eye here and it is almost given that nothing will change in the policy next month. More caution will be expressed on the inflation front,” said Sabnavis. CareEdge however says that wholesale price inflation (WPI) has been contracting and that is offering some comfort. India’s WPI has been in a deflationary zone for the second month in a row in May, as prices contracted by 3.48%. “Deflation in WPI will have a lagged impact on CPI inflation going forward. Having said that, RBI would remain cautious and adopt a wait and watch mode. We reaffirm our view that RBI would maintain an extended pause in 2023,” said CareEdge.

Inflation to inch higher still? Incessant rains will add to woes, warn economists

Mapping storage facilities will help NABARD direct the right resources to expand capacities where there’s a need. Cold storage forms the most vital aspect of the post-harvest horticulture value chain, according to <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/cold-storage-capacity-expands-rs-21-000-crore-investment-lined-up-by-2023-119032200623_1.html">CRISIL</a>. According to government statistics, there are around 7,654 cold stage warehouses in the country with more than half of the capacity being used to store potatoes. The remaining 30% is made up of multi-commodity cold storage. The states of Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal make up nearly 55-60% of over cold storage as the biggest potato producers in the country. “In addition, we propose creating warehousing in line with warehouse development and regulatory authoring norms. Our government will provide viability gap funding for such warehouses in the bloc or thaluk,” she said. Nirmala Sitharaman wants NABARD to geo-tag cold storage facilities to make them more efficient

New Delhi, Feb. The <keyword id="6358021" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget">Budget</keyword> for 2021-22 extensively and comprehensively envisages <keyword id="9594937" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="several-initiatives">several initiatives</keyword> and areas of focus, aimed at enhancing India's overall competitiveness and manufacturing capacities, which would enable growth, diversification and technological enhancement of India's exports, <keyword id="8497279" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commerce-Secretary-Anup-Wadhawan">Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan</keyword> said on Wednesday. These cover both ease of doing business in the area of approvals and procedures, and the physical environment for <keyword id="6355120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment">investment</keyword>, targeting a plug and play eco-system for investors, he said. Briefing the media on the Budget 2021-22 initiatives, the <keyword id="84" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commerce">commerce</keyword> secretary said that one primary area of focus is the creation of a robust infrastructure, logistics and utilities environment for the manufacturing sector. Some of these measures include a scheme for Mega Investment Textiles Parks (MITRA), which will create world class infrastructure with plug and play facilities to enable the creation of global champions in the sector, benefiting from economies of scale and agglomeration. Seven Textile Parks will be established over three years. He said that further, steps like substantial investments in the development of modern fishing harbours and fish landing centres will be made in five major fishing harbours at Kochi, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip, and Petuaghat, along with a multipurpose Seaweed Park in Tamil Nadu, are proposed. These measures are expected to boost exports from the textiles and marine sector. Wadhawan said that for the promotion of exports from the agriculture sector, the "Operation Green" scheme of Ministry of Food Processing Industry, which is presently limited to onion, potatoes and tomatoes, has been increased to 22 perishable items. This would promote creation of infrastructure and value addition for horticulture products. Also, the Budget allocation for the schemes such as Agriculture Export Policy (AEP) and Transport and Marketing Assistance (TMA) has been enhanced, which will help in the implementation of AEP in States and boost agriculture exports. Speaking on the plantation sector, the Commerce secretary said that Rs. 1,000 crores have been provided in the Budget for the welfare of tea workers, especially women and their children. This will benefit around 10.75 lakh tea workers, including 6.23 lakh women workers engaged in the big tea estates of Assam and West Bengal. In addition, around 1.47 lakh small tea growers are also likely to be benefited. Wadhawan said that this Budget also promotes ease of doing business through rationalisation of procedures, easing of compliances and trade facilitation measures. The measures include certain changes in the provisions relating to ADD and CVD levies, mandatory filing of bills of entry before the end of day preceding the day of arrival of goods, he added. He further added that streamlining of the ADD / CVD provisions, including measures aimed at enforcing anti-absorption, will potentially enable a level playing for domestic industry through addressing unfair trade practices. The commerce Secretary said that the Budget has proposed rationalisation of customs duty structure with a thrust on both easy and competitive access to raw material and infant industry protection objectives to encourage exports, particularly of value-added products. This includes reduction in duties on critical raw-material such as iron and steel, copper scrap, naptha, nylon fibre and yarn, etc. To rationalise the duty structure of gold and silver, the rates have been reduced to 7.5% from 12.5% with Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess of 2.5 %. Budget 2021-22 will enhance India's manufacturing capacities and boost trade, says Commerce Secretary

Patna, Apr 16 () The Bihar government has reached out to at least 14.5 lakh migrants stranded in Delhi, Mumbai and other parts of the country, amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown, and provided them meals, dry ration and otheressential items, officials here said.The state government has also been doling out a special assistance of Rs 1,000 to distressed migrant workers after verification through the Direct Benefit Transfer system.Two days after a large number of labourers, many of them from the state, had gathered at the Bandra station in Mumbai, heeding rumours that arrangements were being made to send them home, the Bihar government took up the matter with Maharashtra, while also making efforts to establish contact with the anguished workers, Bihar Minister Sanjay Jha told on Thursday."The Bihar chief secretary spoke to his Maharashtra counterpart on the same day and sought help for the stranded migrants there," he said.Principal Secretary, Bihar State Disaster Management Department, Pratyaya Amrit, said a total of 14.56 lakh migrants have been provided relief so far in camps set up for the purpose in Delhi and Mumbai, and states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and West Bengal.The state government is supplementing the efforts of the local administration at these places, Amrit said.Applications for special assistance have poured in from at least eight states, including Haryana, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and Delhi.As part of the special assistance programme, launched by the government on April 6, about Rs 8 lakh has been debiteddirectly in the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, he said."In accordance with the instructions of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, we are trying to reach out to every single person who is contacting us over helpline numbers atthe CM's office, the disaster management department or the Bihar Resident Commissioner office in Delhi," Amrit said.Heart-wrenching images of jobless labourers and marginal workers walking back home, after suspension of transport services, were splashed on all TV channels andsocial media platforms, following the imposition of the nationwide lockdown in March end. Some of them were groundedmidway by the administration in other states.The chief minister had appealed to them to stay put wherever they were and promised that his government wouldprovide necessary assistance to them.The April 14 incident in Mumbai further laid bare the woes of the migrants, many of whom have lost daily wage jobs.Amrit, whose department is coordinating relief operations, said 14 camps are functioning in Mumbai itself.He also said that the government-funded relief operations in far-off places, including Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Sikkim, are being carried out withthe help of the Bihar Foundation's chapters and their affiliated organisations.The Bihar Foundation -- a forum for the state's diaspora -- has Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who also head the JD(U), as its patron and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi as its chairman.Jha, a close associate of Kumar, said the government has taken stock of the situation in the relief camps of Mumbaiand elsewhere, after Tuesday's unfortunate incident in Mumbai.At several places the workers are not receiving help from local authorities, he stated."We, at the party level, along with officials and their personal contacts, are trying to redress their problems," the state water resources minister said. This commitment is a part of our previously disclosed commitment to invest $5.5 billion in India and includes our plan to double our manufacturing capabilities locally in the next five years, to cater to the ever-increasing demand of our products among the consumers. In recent years, we have announced an investment of Rs 514 Crores in a new foods facility in Uttar Pradesh which will provide 1,500 direct/indirect jobs. We have also invested in increasing capacity at our existing foods plants in West Bengal and Maharashtra and have additionally proposed to set up a greenfield project in Assam. Q: What is the production capacity for the PepsiCo products, and has it reached pre-Covid levels?
