In a letter to chief secretaries and director generals of police on August 23, Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra drew their attention to the issue of incidents of <keyword id="22949902" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="violence-in-medical-institutions" source="keywords">violence in medical institutions</keyword> and the recent protests following the Kolkata incident. Taking suo-motu cognisance of the incident, the Supreme Court delivered orders on August 20 and 22, he said. In its August 22 order, the court inter-alia directed that "the Secretary in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare shall engage with the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police so as to ensure that the State Governments/UTs put into place certain basic minimum requirements pending the receipt of the report of the NTF to assuage the concerns of the doctors over their safety at their workplaces". The Supreme Court-appointed National Task Force (NTF) will formulate a protocol for ensuring the safety and security of doctors and other healthcare professionals. Chandra said, "It (the top court) has also directed that the state governments shall take remedial and appropriate action given the exigencies of the situation within a period of two weeks thereafter." "In this regard, the following are some of the immediate measures which can be considered to enhance the security and provide safer working environment for <keyword id="19896830" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthcare-workers" source="keywords">healthcare workers</keyword>," he said in the letter. The letter called for a provision to ensure the safe movement of resident doctors and nurses within different blocks, hostel buildings and other areas of a hospital during night duty hours. Besides, the letter said, there should be routine security patrolling on hospital premises at night, a 24/7 manned security control room and close liasioning with the nearest police station. Ganguly's foundation offers help to COVID-19 warriors

Kolkata, Jul 8 () West Bengal on Wednesday witnessed the highest single-day spike of 986 COVID-19 cases, taking the state's virus count to 24,823, the health department said in a bulletin. The state also reported 23 new fatalities, raising the death toll to 827, it added. Of the 23 deaths, six each are reported from Kolkata and North 24 Parganas district, followed by five from Howrah, two from Malda and one each from Hooghly, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur and Jalpaiguri, it added. The previous highest single-day spike was on Sunday when 895 cases were reported. Kolkata reported 366 new infections on Wednesday, the maximum in a day so far. Districts recording high incidence of cases include North 24 Parganas (223), Howrah (106) and South 24 Parganas (103). The number of active COVID-19 cases now stands at 7,705, the bulletin said, adding that 501 patients have recovered from the infection since Tuesday. BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) director Shanta Dutta were discharged from hospitals on Wednesday after they tested negative for the virus, health department sources said. Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attributed the surging coronavirus cases to the rise in the number of laboratories testing samples of suspected COVID-19 patients. "There are over 50 testing laboratories now and 9,000 to 10,000 tests are being conducted every day. Ten per cent of them testing positive is quite normal. Since the number of testing, tracing and tracking are increasing, the number of infections is also rising. "But there is nothing to be scared of. If you get yourself treated on time, there is nothing to worry about," she said. During a meeting with doctors of several state-run hospitals, the chief minister urged them to pay equal attention to non-COVID-19 patients also. Banerjee said junior doctors, who are worried about their career as COVID-19 has jeopardised the academic system, institutes, need not worry. "They will face no problem in their academic career. It's the responsibility of the government," she said. WB reports highest single-day spike of nearly 1,000 COVID-19 cases

Guwahati, Apr 27 () Over 390 students of Assam arrived here on Monday from the coaching hub of Kota in Rajasthan and have been kept under institutional quarantine, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.Sarma and his junior minister Pijush Hazarika received the students at the Sarusajai quarantine facility in the city after they arrived at 3 am by buses."After a long journey from Kota, 391 children are back with smiles and cheers. To ensure that they and their families remain safe, we are putting them into 14 days of quarantine," the health minister tweeted.The boys have been kept at the Sarusajai quarantine facility and the girls in three hotels.The students started their nearly 2,000-km journey from Kota in the west of India to Guwahati in the northeastern state of Assam on Thursday.Kota is a coaching hub where medical and engineering aspirants from different parts of the country go every year in large numbers to prepare for competitive exams.Quarantine has been made mandatory as the students are coming from Rajasthan which has been categorised a COVID-19 'Red Zone' and moreover, there is also the possibility of contracting the disease during the journey, Sarma had said. The state government facilitated the return of the students in 17 buses against a charge of Rs 7,000 per person.Swab tests will be conducted on the students on the fifth day and doctors will decide whether those testing negative can be discharged and allowed to spend the remaining nine days under home observation, Sarma had said earlier.The students, who have already been in quarantine in Kota, have not come into direct contact with any COVID-19 patient, he had said.
