Some took issue with the nominating guidelines for best international film, with <a href="https://twitter.com/ocmd73/status/1617909322457178118">one Twitter user writing</a> "the rules for that award are so stupid." Film critic <a href="https://twitter.com/isaacfeldberg/status/1617892335773446144">Isaac Feldberg said</a> the film's snub is "really frustrating.""Just a great work of art on every conceivable front," he added. "Decision to Leave" stars Park Hae-il ("Memories of Murder") as Hae-jun, a detective who gradually becomes infatuated with widow Seo-rae, played by Tang Wei ("Lust, Caution"), as he investigates the death of her husband. The film, which was released in June 2022 in South Korea, has <a href="https://www.vulture.com/article/decision-to-leave-movie-review-directed-by-park-chan-wook.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">garnered</a> <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/13/movies/decision-to-leave-review-park-chan-wook.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">praise</a> from critics for Tang's performance, <a href="https://variety.com/2022/film/reviews/decision-to-leave-review-park-chan-wook-1235275058/">the film's camerawork</a>, and its <a href="https://www.polygon.com/reviews/23402587/decision-to-leave-review-park-chan-wook">engrossing narrative</a>. In addition to Park picking up the best director award at Cannes in 2022, "Decision to Leave" was <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/2022-cannes-lineup-film-festival-1235128080/">also in competition</a> for the festival's Palme d'Or, <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/cannes-2022-awards-winners-1235155234/">which eventually went to Ruben Östlund's "Triangle of Sadness."</a> "Decision to Leave" also <a href="https://www.insider.com/golden-globes-2023-who-will-win-who-should-win-2023-1">earned a nod at the 2023 Golden Globes</a>, <a href="https://www.goldenglobes.com/winners-nominees/best-motion-picture-foreign-language">where it was nominated for the best picture — non-English lanauge film</a>, an award that eventually went to Argentina's "Argentina, 1985."As South Korea's official entry for the best international feature category at the 2023 Oscars, "Decision to Leave" <a href="https://aframe.oscars.org/news/post/2023-oscars-shortlists">was named to the award show's shortlist in December,</a> with <a href="https://variety.com/lists/2023-oscar-predictions/best-documentary-feature-2023/">some</a> <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/awards/story/2022-11-11/buzzmeter-oscars-2023-behold-the-buzz#internationalfeature" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outlets</a> <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/2023-oscar-nomination-predictions-1235302755/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">predicting</a> that it would be among the nominees. For a film with so much buzz — and critical acclaim — its snub clearly stings.

Park Chan-wook's 'Decision to Leave' is one of this year's biggest Oscar nomination snubs &mdash; and fans are furious

Between January 2013 and March 2014, Chinese direct acquisitions of commercial <keyword id="6354553" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="real-estate">real estate</keyword> (CRE) in the United States totaled US$5.8 billion – more than twice the cumulative amount invested in the previous eight years. China is now the second largest foreign investor after Canada, with an 8-percent share of the total cross-border investments in U.S. CRE. 
 In light of this, Reza Etedali co-chaired a sold-out <keyword id="852310" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="YPO">YPO</keyword> event, The Growing Wave of Chinese Investments in U.S. Real Estate, alongside Wei Chen on 29 April 2015 in Los Angeles. Etedali joined YPO in 2008 in California; Chen joined in 2009 in Tennessee. The event was a joint-effort by YPO’s Global Real Estate Industry Network and Doing Business With China Network. 
 
As CEO of REZA Investment Group, Etedali is responsible for a multibillion-dollar transaction track record as the premier retail real estate investment advisory firm. The group focuses resources on shopping centers and other retail investment opportunities with clients that run the gamut from major Chinese and American real estate investors and developers. 
 
Etedali’s and Chen’s experience was the foundation of the architecture of April’s event. Discussions revolved around sharing best practices and insights for raising Chinese capital, understanding current and future trends and discussing the cultural challenges inherent in East meets West deal making. 
 
Recognize Cultural Differences 
 
“There are significant cultural differences between the United States and China,” says Etedali. “Understanding these differences and building a solid and personal relationship with Chinese investors is key to making a deal work.” 
 
While cultural differences like communication and body language are frequently discussed, the more structural disparities that can affect a deal are often not. 
 
“America has a lot of systems in place that do not exist in China,” says Etedali. “In America you negotiate in the beginning and proceed to close. In China, sometimes the negotiating continues all the way until close.” 
 
 
 
Establish Personal Relationships 
 
The system of trust within the U.S. business structure is very different from that of China’s. 
 
“Typically when we open an escrow we don’t think about the person behind it,” Etedali explains. “In China, your business partner will ask, ‘Who is the individual you’re sending the money to? What’s their name? Do you have a relationship with them?’” 
 
One of the biggest lessons learned over the course of the event was the importance of building a relationship prior to negotiating terms. 
“In China, first you build a personal relationship and then you do business,” says Etedali. “First you take your potential clients out to dinner, have them over to your home. Once you know them personally and a connection is built, everything else happens easily. If you skip this part you’re in for a tough proposition.” 
 
Understand New Trends in Capital Flow 
 
Another major topic of discussion at the event was new trends in capital moving from China into the U.S. 
 
“The government is continuing to ease the flow of capital out China,” says Etedali. “The Chinese real estate market has significantly slowed and many investors – for diversification purposes and for higher returns – are now looking to United States.” 
 Recognizing that a balanced flow of capital going both in and out of a country creates a healthy <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>, the Chinese government has been removing many of the controls that used to be in place, encouraging money to leave China. 
 
“Since there has been so much capital going into China over the past few years the government wants to promote investment capital going from China to other countries,” says Etedali. “This will also ensure better relationship with other nations. 
 
The more buyers and investors you have in the property market the more stable the prices get. In the long term, more foreign investments create a stronger support for the values in U.S. The capital is more patient and can invest in development deals with more patient capital than what has previously been seen from U.S. investors.” 
 
While cultural differences are still seen as the greatest challenge when it comes to the U.S. doing business with China, overcoming these differences can give you incredible leverage. 
 
“Once you build a strong relationship, transactions are much easier to execute,” says Etedali.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Shares of upstream chip companies TSMC and ASML have surged on the back of Nvidia's gains.</li><li>TSMC's market cap briefly crossed $1 trillion on Monday.</li></ul>Tech giant <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-today-nvidia-stock-drives-nasdaq-record-closing-high-2024-7">Nvidia</a> has been riding the artificial intelligence wave that made it one of the <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nvidia-stock-bigger-than-apple-2nd-most-valuable-company-global-2024-6">world's most valuable companies.</a>Now, Nvidia's suppliers and upstream partners are riding on the hype, too.<a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tsm-stock">Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC,</a> ADR shares on the New York Stock Exchange briefly crossed the $1 trillion valuation mark on Monday after gaining as much as 4.8%. Chip giant TSMC crosses $1 trillion market cap, riding on the back of Nvidia's gains

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Injured passengers of the turbulence-hit Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 have been offered compensation.</li><li>The airline announced on Facebook that it's offering more than $10,000 to passengers with minor injuries.</li></ul>Singapore Airlines has offered injured passengers upwards of $10,000 in compensation after their flight hit severe turbulence and plunged 178 feet in under five seconds.In a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/singaporeair/posts/pfbid02oNEW6fAeqHD72YGJgGqDoG3ZCmJVNVW7RksyeRHYq9pcts96rCTRq4CbdkQ1NGm9l">Facebook post</a> on Tuesday, the carrier said that those who had sustained minor injuries on Flight SQ321 from London's Heathrow Airport to Singapore's Changi Airport were entitled to compensation.It added that passengers with more serious injuries requiring long-term medical care would receive larger offers."Passengers medically assessed as having sustained serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, and requesting financial assistance are offered an advance payment of US$25,000 to address their immediate needs," the carrier wrote in the Facebook post.The airline also offered a full airfare refund to all passengers on the flight, even those who were completely uninjured.The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet when it was thrust rapidly up and down for 62 seconds some 10 hours into the flight, per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mot.gov.sg/news/details/transport-safety-investigation-bureau-preliminary-investigation-findings-of-incident-involving-sq321">Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau</a>.The plane was then forced to divert to Bangkok.The turbulence on board SQ321 <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pictures-show-chaotic-aftermath-singapore-flight-debris-blood-on-ceiling-2024-5">was so bad</a> that it also <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-singapore-airlines-could-owe-turbulence-death-injuries-2024-5">injured over 100 other people</a> — making it one of the <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/serious-injuries-due-to-turbulence-are-extremely-rare-2024-5">worst turbulence incidents</a> in recent history.One passenger, Geoffrey Kitchen, a 73-year-old British national with a pre-existing heart condition, died of a suspected heart attack.On June 4, the airline wrote in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/singaporeair/posts/pfbid02ouMkCRGRRBrkS6ydcnva3fNPbyh5rG93mE8qCgitEdXjv5BjG3GV77xCStQoEatnl">Facebook post</a> that 20 passengers were still receiving medical care in the hospitals in Bangkok. A Singapore Airlines spokesperson told BI that as of 1 p.m. Singapore time on June 11, 11 passengers from the flight were still in Thai hospitals. Ade Tan and Amos Chan, a Singaporean couple on board the flight, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/honeymooning-couple-endured-60-seconds-of-hell-aboard-sq321-flight-2024-5">described the chaos and horror on board</a> when the plane plummeted."I must have been thrown off because when I next opened my eyes, I was actually on the aisle," Chan, 28, told BI's Kwan Wei Kevin Tan. "I had slammed into another passenger two rows behind us.""There were a lot of oxygen masks dropped from above where people had crashed into the ceilings. Many were injured, people had blood on their heads, and some were lying in the aisle as well," Tan, also 28, added.

Singapore Airlines has offered $10,000 to passengers who got hurt when their flight hit severe turbulence

Jennie Zeiher is a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-never-do-airport-lounges-frequent-flyer">frequent flyer</a>, but she was beginning to distrust the process.It was about 95 degrees Fahrenheit that day, June 10, in Athens, Greece, as she, her husband, and two sons <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flight-attendant-pet-peeves-passengers-gate-lice-boarding-crowds-2023-3">boarded their flight</a>.Zeiher recalls their pilot announcing over the speaker that the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-plane-stuck-on-tarmac-hours-child-bag-toilet-aisle-2023-8">tarmac-bound</a> Qatar Airways plane had an electrical issue.The doors were sealed, there was no air conditioning, and in the stiff, unmoving air, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-passengersheat-stroke-on-overheated-las-vegas-atlanta-flight-2023-7">the heat inside the plane mounted</a>.Hours passed.Zeiher and her 10-year-old son drank all their water. But there was more to it. By the end of June, five other tourists died on hikes in Greece's heat.<div type="image" title="tourists wearing hats carrying umbrellas on a sandy stone path high above a city" height="1500" width="2250" msid="112550807" hostid="261" sizebytes="287604"></div>The extreme temperatures turned a logistical airport mishap into a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arizona-heat-so-hot-almost-killed-teacher-heatstroke-burns-2023-9">potentially dangerous situation</a>.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heat-waves-are-dominating-summer-and-its-not-abnormal-anymore-2022-7">Summer has become a relentless barrage of heat waves</a>, but temperatures aren't the only hazard on the rise.The climate crisis amplifies some of the worst parts of flying — delays, bumpy rides, and possibly even <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airlines-united-delta-scrambling-fix-crisis-too-many-cheap-flights-2024-7">ticket costs</a>.Flying is still safe, and <a target="_blank" href="https://news.mit.edu/2024/study-flying-keeps-getting-safer-0807">it keeps getting safer</a>. Even so, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/north-america-lags-rest-world-air-travel-growth-iata-2024-4">air travel boom</a> means more people and planes are cruising through an increasingly extreme atmosphere.While the odds are low that you will get trapped on a hot plane or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-airlines-passenger-dies-after-severe-turbulence-2024-5">injured in violent turbulence</a>, more incidents like this are bound to happen. On several fronts, flying is getting worse.<h2>Turbulence is getting worse</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/turbulence-more-frequent-stronger-expert-aviation-explains-why-2024-7">Increasing turbulence</a> was aviation professionals' top climate-related safety concern in a 2020<a target="_blank" href="https://library.wmo.int/records/item/57199-outcomes-of-the-2020-survey-on-the-impacts-of-climate-change-and-variability-on-aviation"> survey</a> of more than 400 pilots, flight crew members, air traffic controllers, and other flight professionals worldwide by the World Meteorological Organization. One of the most dangerous types is clear-air turbulence, which is much harder to predict than turbulence from storms or mountains.<div type="image" title="QATAR plane lowering toward a blurry runway" height="1500" width="2278" msid="112550814" hostid="261" sizebytes="379102"></div>"It's clear blue skies, there's no storms anywhere, and there's just this invisible turbulence that, often, the first you know about it is when you're flying through it," said Paul Williams, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Reading in the UK who's been studying turbulence for about a decade.He's <a target="_blank" href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2023GL103814">found</a> that clear-air turbulence — especially the most severe instances of it — has already increased because rising temperatures bring more wind shear to the jet stream.In severe turbulence, an aircraft can be momentarily out of control, passengers lift out of their seats against their seatbelts, and walking down the aisle becomes impossible. That's what happened to doctors Ade Tan and Amos Chan during their honeymoon in May.The couple barely felt their plane starting to wobble before they were shooting toward the ceiling.<div type="image" title="A general view of the cabin of Singapore Airlines flight SQ321, which was hit by severe turbulence." height="3548" width="4728" msid="112550808" hostid="261" sizebytes="730154"></div>"The last thing I saw was Amos trying to put on his seatbelt, and the next thing I registered was that he was no longer in his seat," Tan<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/honeymooning-couple-endured-60-seconds-of-hell-aboard-sq321-flight-2024-5"> previously told BI</a>'s Kwan Wei Kevin Tan.Investigators later reported that Singapore Airlines flight SQ321<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-airlines-flight-turbulence-death-investigation-report-details-2024-5"> had dropped 178 feet in just four seconds</a> due to an exceptionally rough patch of turbulence.Tan said oxygen masks were dangling where passengers had crashed into ceiling panels, and people were lying in the aisles, some with blood on their heads. She tried to help Geoffrey Kitchen, a 73-year-old British passenger who ultimately died.A Bangkok hospital official later said in a news conference that over 100 of the 211 passengers sustained injuries. Tan said that she suffered a cervical spine fracture and spent a week in the hospital.<div type="image" title="man in hospital scrubs with head bandaging in a wheelchair with medical professionals standing around him in a hospital lobby" height="1500" width="2250" msid="112550817" hostid="261" sizebytes="175222"></div>Singapore Airlines did not respond to a request for comment, but the company previously <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/singaporeair/posts/singapore-airlines-sends-offers-of-compensation-to-sq321-passengerssingapore-air/867151658789515/">posted</a> on Facebook apologizing for the "traumatic experience" and saying it had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/singapore-airlines-offers-compensation-victims-injured-turbulence-hit-sq321-2024-6">offered $10,000 or upward of $25,000 in compensation</a> to injured passengers, depending on their injury.<h2>The skies could be even bumpier in the future</h2>The North Atlantic, where planes fly between North America and Europe, had 55% more severe clear-air turbulence in 2020 than in 1979, Williams found.By the 2060s, he <a target="_blank" href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2017GL074618">predicts</a> twice as much turbulence, or even three times as much.While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.faa.gov/travelers/fly_safe/turbulence">FAA data</a> doesn't show a rise in turbulence-related injuries — there are usually less than 20 a year on US airlines flying worldwide — Williams said the data may be misleading. It only counts serious injuries that require a person to be hospitalized for over 48 hours or have hemorrhaging, broken bones, or second or third-degree burns.<div type="image" title="six ambulances lined up in a parking lot beneath and air traffic control tower at night" height="1500" width="2250" msid="112550815" hostid="261" sizebytes="276356"></div>Even if nobody gets hurt, more turbulence can cause more wear and tear on aircraft."Even light turbulence is flexing the wings up and down and stressing the airframe," Williams said, adding, "That limits the life of the aircraft."More turbulence doesn't have to mean bumpier flights. Planes have more flexible wings than they used to, which reduces inflight jostling, and forecasting to help pilots avoid turbulence is improving.New onboard <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ancient-civilizations-that-were-hiding-in-plain-sight-2023-1">lidar technology</a> can also use a laser to reveal clear-air turbulence ahead. For now, it's large and expensive, but Williams hopes one day it'll be small and cheap enough for all passenger planes. It's unclear if that technology will catch up with turbulence from climate change.<h2>Worse weather brings more delays</h2>Some parts of our flying future aren't necessarily dangerous or scary. They're just frustrating — like delays, which will likely worsen in our warming world.Bad weather causes about 75% of air traffic delays in the US, according to the FAA, and mounting research indicates climate change is driving more severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, heat waves, wildfires, and hail in some places. In fact, heat alone could ground 23 times more passengers by 2050 — up to 185,000 people a year — a 2020 McKinsey <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mckinsey.com/~/media/mckinsey/business%20functions/sustainability/our%20insights/will%20infrastructure%20bend%20or%20break%20under%20climate%20stress/will-infrastructure-bend-or-break-under-climate-stress-case-study-old.pdf">report</a> projected.<div type="image" title="plane silhouette rising in an orange sky beside a large bright sun" height="1500" width="2250" msid="112550813" hostid="261" sizebytes="42478"></div>In some cases, extreme heat can melt runways, like it did <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jul/18/uk-transport-operators-say-worst-heatwave-problems-yet-to-come">at a UK airport</a> in 2022. A more common issue, though, is that extreme heat changes the calculus of takeoff. Planes must be lighter or have a longer runway to get enough lift in extremely hot air, which means that on especially hot days, airlines may have to ditch some cargo and, therefore, some <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://aviationweek.com/business-aviation/airports-fbos-suppliers/rising-temperatures-aircraft-payload-range-affects&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1723680874028451&amp;usg=AOvVaw3MPUhWiESTacjTr67H9iJV">revenue</a>.Then, there are cases like the Canadian wildfires in June 2023, which reduced visibility in the Northeast US so much that it delayed hundreds of flights.<div type="image" title="airplane nose emerges on smoky dark low visibility airport runway" height="1500" width="2249" msid="112550810" hostid="261" sizebytes="26472"></div>Changing weather patterns are already increasing flight delays in Europe, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iata.org/en/iata-repository/publications/economic-reports/weather-related-operational-disruptions-are-rising/">according</a> to the International Air Transport Association. The memo warns that these weather delays have "a cost impact" for airlines and travelers alike.Even if bad weather doesn't cause delays, it can cost money. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-airlines-are-struggling-despite-record-travel-demand-profits-revenue-2024-6">Airlines are already struggling to turn profits</a>. The climate crisis won't help. Think of the astronomical air conditioning required to cool an airport and the planes at its gates on a hot day.In its June global <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iata.org/en/iata-repository/publications/economic-reports/global-outlook-for-air-transport-june-2024-report/">outlook</a>, IATA wasn't shy about the issue: "The industry's profitability is still fragile, leaving meager buffers with which to absorb the rising costs of climate change and decarbonization."Airports are likely to pass their costs on to airlines by increasing their landing fees, "which then get passed on to passengers however airlines can do it," Robert W. Mann, an airline industry consultant and former airline executive, told BI.<h2>Buckle up and expect delays</h2>This all means that you should brace for flying to become more annoying and possibly even scary at times."Passengers will need to pack patience when they board aircraft" and heed instructions about wearing seatbelts, Veronica Cote, an associate professor of aviation science at Bridgewater State University and a former pilot, told BI in an email.Despite the complexity of aviation and the ever-changing atmosphere, Cote added, airlines still run "tens of thousands of operations daily safely."Even before the incident in Athens, Zeiher felt anxious while flying. She doesn't like the lack of control, and takeoffs scare her. She's even experienced extreme turbulence.Still, she's undeterred."I'll continue flying. I enjoy travel, so you have to," Zeiher said. Flying is about to become even more miserable

These reforms have not been without pain. They have, in part, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-economic-slowdown-in-11-charts-2014-3">contributed to slower economic growth</a>, and to a rise in defaults.
So, why have policymakers traded high growth for slower growth? What would happen if China abstained from any reforms? What if Beijing didn't try and curb lending, or shadow banking?
More liquidity and would probably lead to continued inefficient allocation of resources. It's likely that the property market would swell, China's excess capacity would worsen, and money would generally go into projects that were basically intended to drive GDP.
<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_left"><div class="image on-image">Societe Generale, Wei Yao</div></div>Banks can continue to roll over debt and continue to finance new projects with increasing amounts of credit. While this would stave off any pain at the moment, it would just push the problems further down the road and risk exacerbating them.
In recent years we've noticed that credit growth has far outpaced economic growth, prompting Societe Generale's Wei Yao to ask where all the money has gone. According to Yao, China is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/is-china-facing-a-minsky-moment-2013-6">facing its own Minsky moment </a>where periods of speculation and credit growth inflate assets can only to lead to a crisis. 
Runaway credit train
In a <a href="http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-01-02/china-s-runaway-train-is-running-out-of-track">Bloomberg View column</a>, Patrick Chovanec, chief strategist at Silvercrest Asset Management, wrote that "China's leaders are riding a runaway train that they don't quite know how to stop. And they're running out of track."
And when this does go sour, its impact will be felt beyond China.
"China's credit-fueled investment boom has been a driver of metals prices and machinery exports," wrote Chovanec. "China has become the world's largest automobile market, its largest oil importer, and its largest buyer of gold. Although foreign banks have relatively little direct exposure to Chinese financial markets, capital flows into and out of the mainland are potentially large enough to have a significant impact on asset classes not normally associated with China. A financial train wreck would send tremors through global markets."
The end result
"Japan's debt didn't start to rise at a similar speed until the mid-1980s," wrote Lombard Street Research's Diana Choyleva. "China's debt has surged sooner because its economy is much bigger than Japan's was."
She added that debt has grown much faster in the last five years than it did in Japan during the same stage of development. And the rate of debt increase is "as important, if not more important, in precipitating a crisis than the absolute level of debt."

"The world is just not big enough to let China continue to increase its income per capita and waste its savings on a vast scale for years to come," she said. "The financial crisis was the beginning of the end of China's export and investment-led growth model."
Choyleva warns that China's burgeoning debt has made it, so that its '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-bear-stearns-moment-may-strike-2014-3">Bear Stearns moment' may strike at any time.</a>
This would basically change the market's perception of inherent credit risk in the Chinese economy and cause a liquidity crunch. If China were to "mop up the mess while still wasting capital, it could be only 2-3 years before a major financial crisis hits the economy."
Alaistair Chan at Moody's told Business Insider that if China fails to push through reforms "the end result would be that the economy stagnates in a middle-income trap."
"Zero reform would mean that productivity growth would continue coming entirely from adding more capital to labour, rather than from improved efficiency. This method of growth is already hitting diminishing returns and if it continues then China's potential growth rate would fall sharply."
If reforms aren't pushed through, Standard Chartered's Stephen Green thinks inequality and corruption will rise as growth slows and it would leave China vulnerable to foreign and domestic shocks. "At the same time, more money and talent would leave for sunnier and clearer skies. Its not a pleasant thought - and the sense of crisis, and the need to avoid such a future, is partly whats driving Beijing these days."
Not everyone is as gloomy. Chan says "it should be noted that this won't necessarily result in a financial crisis or hard landing because if productivity is slow then the government won't need to pile on much debt/investment to boost employment."
Yao meanwhile is far more blunt on the subject. In the absence of reforms, "China could potentially face its own lost decade."

China's Economic Predicament: Why Pain Is Coming No Matter What

While she had interned at a pair of Silicon Valley tech companies, including the cloud storage provider Box, and had enjoyed the work, she figured she'd have a tough time getting a full-time job in the industry without a technical background.It turns out she had all the qualifications she needed. Xu's internship experiences attracted the attention of a Facebook recruiter, who reached out to her via LinkedIn. As the recruiter explained, Xu was a prime candidate for Facebook's <a href="http://fbrpms.com/#facebook-rpm-program-welcome">Rotational Product Manager</a> (RPM) program - a recruiting initiative the company started in 2011 that takes inexperienced and non-technical people and trains them to oversee development of different products at the company. Indeed Facebook designed the program specifically to find people like Xu, people whose different life experiences would allow them to see products in a different light than those steeped in technical knowledge."We see a lot of future leaders come out of this program," said Deb Liu, Facebook's Marketplace vice president.Despite some initial worries about whether it was a good fit for her, Xu decided to take Facebook's offer and entered the 18-month program in the summer of 2016. The company quickly put her to work on Instagram's comments team. Six months later, she was working on personalized learning software, an initiative which was later folded into the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, the philanthropic effort Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg started with his wife. Finally, Xu was assigned to the Facebook Marketplace team, where she ended up staying after the program concluded.And she did it all without those technical skills she was worried about lacking."Nobody has ever asked me to look at their code," she said. "I think a good product manager is just someone willing to be humble and learn." <h2>What is a product manager?</h2>For Liu, a product manager, or PM, is the "glue that helps people gather around a product."A good PM helps direct a technical team so its efforts make the most impact, ideally delivering not just the features customers want, but the ones they need."A great PM can see around corners," said Liu, who cofounded the RPM program in 2011. Because of that, it's handy for PMs to have skills outside of programming and engineering. Program managers that come from non-technical backgrounds can often spot opportunities and solve problems long before they get on the radar of their more technically-minded colleagues, she said. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">FacebookFacebook RPMs meet in a peer group. Because the career straddles the line between engineering and management, it can be hard to develop a resume specifically for the role. And getting started in it can be tough for anyone who's not already involved in product development. "It's one of those disciplines that's hard to get into if you don't know someone or haven't done it before," Liu said.That's why Facebook developed the RPM program. It's designed to introduce the career to people who might not otherwise have known it exists. The program is intended to help the company build up its base of talent from diverse backgrounds. When searching for candidates to be RPMs, Facebook is hoping to bring in people from different genders and a wide range of career and academic backgrounds. So far, 122 men and women have gone through the program. <h2>What is the Facebook RPM program?</h2>Facebook designed the RPM program to give candidates as much experience in product management in the shortest span of time. By design, RPMs change teams every six months during the year-and-half they're in the program.Once in the program, the candidates are full-time employees of the company, with standard benefits and salaries. At the end of their tours, the RPMs essentially become free agents, with the ability to join the teams and leaders they connected with during the program.For the duration of the program, the candidates report to one manager, who guides their progress even as they rotate between product teams. Those managers are sometimes getting trained on the job, too, noted RPM Program Manager Michelle Smith. They're often Facebook engineers or other employees who are tackling their first-ever managerial roles."It's amazing to have someone advocating for you," no matter where in the company you are, Smith said.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">FacebookFacebook Vice President Deb Liu speaks on a panel at the annual Grace Hopper Celebration</div></div></div>Facebook's teams have to opt in to participate in the RPM program, but most do, and program members are generally in high demand. Part of the reason for that is Facebook provided an incentive for teams to bring members on board: They don't have to include RPM participants in their allotted headcount. As part of the program, the RPM members meet in peer groups to help coach each other. Each participant is also assigned a mentor who's already completed the program.For many, the highlight of the program comes at the end of their first year after they've completed their first two rotations. At that point, they and the other members they started with plan a group trip abroad to research topics pertinent to their future <keyword id="6354910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Careers">careers</keyword> at Facebook. Xu's group traveled to South Korea, Indonesia, and Norway exploring the idea of "visual sharing." Xu spent time in South Korea learning about the country's fixation with selfie photos. She found out that many Koreans spend hours taking selfies, looking for the perfect photo. Xu took that insight back with her to Facebook, and it informs how she looks at how people share photos on the company's Marketplace. The point of the research trips is "breaking our own habits," Smith said.<h2>What's the outcome of RPM?</h2>The RPM program could be a useful model for how the tech industry - and <a href="https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2017/08/facebook-diversity-update-building-a-more-diverse-inclusive-workforce/">Facebook itself</a> - can address its longtime lack of diversity, when it comes to hiring women, African-Americans, and other underrepresented groups."This program Facebook is doing is an excellent one," said Elizabeth Ames, a senior vice president with AnitaB.org, an advocacy group for women in technology.Part of what she likes about it is that the program stands in stark contrast with the current approach at many tech companies. At those firms, even entry-level workers are expected to already be up-to-speed and ready to work on day one. "Everybody wants someone else to do their training," Ames said. By doing the training itself, Facebook stands to find more people like Xu who would never have considered a career in technology otherwise. The number of people who have gone through the program represents a tiny fraction of <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/273563/number-of-facebook-employees/">Facebook's current workforce of 25,000</a> employees, she noted.Facebook and the other tech firms need to rethink their broader hiring practices, she said. One big move they could make would be to start doing a better job of recruiting at schools other than those in the Ivy League, such as the state universities and community colleges, she said.Representatives of the social networking giant noted that the RPM program is just one of several steps it's taking to try to improve the diversity of its workforce. Another example is its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-rotational-engineering-program-interview-2017-6">Rotational Engineering Program</a>, which it launched in 2016. That program takes people that don't have traditional technical backgrounds and trains them to be software engineers.But Facebook is particularly happy with the success it's seen from the RPM program.
