We've previously reported on Auernheimer's <keyword id="6357115" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hacking">hacking</keyword>, in which he and a compatriot gained access to an AT&amp;T Web server, saved customer email addresses, and released them to Gawker.
Auernheimer plans to appeal; his lawyers argue that AT&amp;T's Web server was public and unsecured, and hence his sentence would criminalize visiting a website.
He'd previously told Business Insider he expected to go to jail: "I'm looking forward to it. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of trolling done from a prison cell. I can knock a good one on Western civilization just by writing letters."

This iPad Hacker Just Got 41 Months Of Jail Time

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Weevilicious.jpg">Wikimedia Commons/Weev</a>Andrew "<keyword id="1659957" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Weev">Weev</keyword>" Auernheimer in 2010</div>Andrew "Weev" Auernheimer, the hacker who called attention to AT&amp;T's poor security by releasing hundreds of thousands of iPad owners' email addresses, will be sentenced in a New Jersey court on Monday for computer crimes.
Despite facing as much as 10 years in jail, he is unrepentant, he made clear in a recent, profanity-laced phone interview with Business Insider.
"Just throw me in prison at this point," Auernheimer said.
In 2010, Auernheimer and a compatriot, Daniel Spitler, discovered that visiting an unsecured AT&amp;T Web server and entering a number associated with the customer's wireless account allowed him to obtain that customer's email address.
By altering the number and repeatedly querying the server, Auernheimer and Spitler were able to obtain hundreds of thousands of email addresses, which they then released to Gawker.
In 2011, Spitler <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/23/daniel-spitler-ipad-hack-email-address-theft_n_883240.html">pled guilty</a> to one count of conspiracy to obtain unauthorized access to computers and one count of identity theft, charges which carried as 12-18-month prison sentence.
Auernheimer, who estimates he and his supporters have spent $250,000 to $300,000 fighting his prosecution, wasn't willing to plea guilty, arguing that all he did was access a public Web server—an action which, if the prosecution's logic is followed, would make all Internet users criminals.
"I'm going to tell everyone in that court what they deserve," Auernheimer told us. "I'm not going to go, 'Oh, what I did is so terrible, I'm so sorry.'"
Asked to write a statement accepting responsibility prior to sentencing, Auernheimer instead <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/21/ipad-hack-statement-of-responsibility/">wrote a fiery letter of protest on TechCrunch</a>.
"I'm going to defend people's right to access public web APIs until the day I die," Auernheimer said. (An API, or application programming interface, is a way for one application to access data from another application—in this case, AT&amp;T's system for providing a user's email address.)
Auernheimer compared his prosecution to that of Aaron Swartz, the Reddit cofounder who recently committed suicide after learning that Assistant United States Attorney Stephen Heymann was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-was-aaron-swartz-harsly-prosecuted-2013-2">seeking jail time</a> in pursuing charges that Swartz illegally accessed MIT's network to download millions of academic articles from JSTOR.
"A sane society would lynch [Heymann] in the square—him and his boss, Carmen Ortiz," Auernheimer said.
And how does Auernheimer feel about his prosecutors?
For once, Auernheimer held back.
"I probably shouldn't comment on that," he said with a laugh.
As for jail? Auernheimer says he intends to continue "trolling," or performing stunts and other actions in hopes of provoking a response, even without regular access to a computer.
"I'm looking forward to it," Auernheimer said. "I'm sure there's going to be a lot of trolling done from a prison cell. I can knock a good one on Western civilization just by writing letters."

Infamous iPad Hacker Makes No Apologies As He Faces Jail Time

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><a href="http://video.cnbc.com/gallery/?video=3000270881">CNBC</a></div></div></div>Well-known hacker Andrew "Weev" Auernheimer, <a href="http://gawker.com/5559346/apples-worst-security-breach-114000-ipad-owners-exposed">who released thousands of iPad users' email addresses</a> to point out a flaw in AT&amp;T's servers, <a href="http://www.newrepublic.com/article/117477/andrew-weev-auernheimers-tro-llc-could-send-him-back-prison">is starting a hedge fund.</a>
His fund will be called "TRO LLC" (clever) and the primary strategy will be to short companies.
"The underlying theme is generating financial intelligence from the computer underground and internet communities," <a href="http://video.cnbc.com/gallery/?video=3000270881">he told CNBC</a>.
He continued: "And there's a number of strategies here, but short is definitely the most dramatic. And our primary strategy is to identify a company that has liabilities that no one knows about yet, and so far as information security and taking a leverage position in put options on their stock, and then releasing information on those outstanding liabilities to the public."
He's not going to be hacking companies, though.
"First we probe the public surface of a company. And second, we take a look and we actually watch hackers - foreign hackers like the Russian Business Network and find out what they're doing. There's another company in New York it's called Consumer Bell...and they do what we do, but for really old boring products - like finding food that has mold in it that makes children sick, when a car company that has a car that hurts people, the stock value droppings or when a software or cloud company has a similar problem, their stock is going to drop, too."
Auernheimer also told CNBC that he already has interested investors. The first offering will be in August. 
Auernheimer got out of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/weev-court-case-dismissed-2014-4">prison earlier this month</a> after his conviction was vacated. He had served 13 months after being sentenced to 41 months

An analysis <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2021/12/09/how-cryptocurrency-revolutionized-white-supremacist-movement#content-area">released Thursday by the nonprofit Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)</a> identified more than 600 cryptocurrency addresses used by white supremacists and other far-right extremists.The research says that figures who have championed white supremacist views — including Andrew Auernheimer, Andrew Anglin of The Daily Stormer website, and right-wing commentator Stefan Molyneux — were early investors in bitcoin and "turned a substantial profit from it.""The estimated tens of millions of dollars' worth of value extreme far-right figures generated represents a sum that would almost certainly be unavailable to them without cryptocurrency, and it gave them a chance to live comfortable lives while promoting hate and authoritarianism," according to the SPLC's analysis on its Hatewatch blog. The analysis goes on to say that "nothing is inherently criminal or extreme about" cryptocurrency and that "most of its users have no connections to the extreme far-right.""However, the far right's early embrace of cryptocurrency merits deeper analysis, due to the way they used it to expand their movement and to obscure funding sources," said Hatewatch's report.Molyneux, who runs the philosophy podcast <a href="https://www.freedomain.com/">"Freedomain"</a> on his website, was banned from YouTube along with the white nationalist Richard Spencer and the former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke in June 2020 as part of a crackdown on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-bans-stefan-molyneux-hate-speech-david-duke-richard-spencer-2020-6">channels that featured hate speech</a>. Molyneux's Twitter account was suspended a little over a week later, <a href="https://screenrant.com/twitter-suspends-stefan-molyneux/">Screen Rant reported</a>. In addition to cryptocurrency, Molyneux appears to make money through soliciting donations on his website, from fans of his purchasing membership to his virtual "Freedomain Community," and by selling books. Molyneux has 10 philosophy-themed books listed for his sale on his website.Aurenheimer, or "weev," became known online as an internet troll and 4chan personality before he later started writing articles containing white supremacist rhetoric for the neo-Nazi and far-right website the Daily Stormer, <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/andrew-%E2%80%9Cweev%E2%80%9D-auernheimer">according to the SPLC</a>. In February, Anglin wrote a post on the Daily Stormer website telling readers they can only donate to the website using the anonymous cryptocurrency Monero. White supremacists have made massive profits through bitcoin, new analysis suggests

It's also tracking neo-Nazi Andrew "weev" Auernheimer, white nationalist Richard Spencer, and his think tank the National Policy Institute, among others.One of bitcoin's most famous attributes is that it lets you move the currency anonymously - but in order to accept donations, places like Counter Currents have had to publicise their bitcoin addresses. That's allowed Bambenak to track what goes in and out of their accounts.Auernheimer, or weev, has reportedly received more than $1 million in bitcoin and, according to Mic, withdrawn $118,620 (£88,057) from his wallet between late August and December.One wallet apparently belonging to Auernheimer has contained a total of 194 bitcoin over a period of several years. At today's bitcoin value, that would add up to more than $3 million.According to the @Neonaziwallets bot, Counter Currents holds 5.79 bitcoin across its wallets, which equates to $91,156 (£67,566).Other white supremacists haven't done so well: Richard Spencer only has around $1,000 sitting in his wallet and has conducted few transactions over the last few months. And, her history revealed a friendship with infamous neo-Nazi Andrew Auernheimer, a hacker and internet troll known as "weev," who writes for The Daily Stormer.During the seven hours between the announcement of Norton's hire and her dismissal, she claimed to be at a movie and unable to respond to a growing mountain of criticism on Twitter.When she finally emerged, she announced she'd no longer have the job at the Times. The topics of the tweets span from the <a href="https://twitter.com/rabite/status/319485420192792576">breakfast</a> in Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) to <a href="https://twitter.com/rabite/status/319886566124302336">railing on </a>the <a href="https://ilt.eff.org/index.php/Computer_Fraud_and_Abuse_Act_(CFAA)">Computer Fraud and Abuse Act</a> (CFAA), which both he and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/gabriella-coleman/hackers-for-right-we-are-_b_2472307.html">fallen hacktivist</a> <keyword id="715627" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aaron-Swartz">Aaron Swartz</keyword> were prosecuted for violating.
The CFAA penalizes "the unauthorized access of a computer or someone who exceeds their authorized access," and has come <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/computer-fraud-and-abuse-act-reform-2013-1#ixzz2LwoaOMxl">under scrutiny</a> since Swartz <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/26-year-old-reddit-co-founder-aaron-swartz-has-died-2013-1">committed suicide</a> after two years of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-was-aaron-swartz-harsly-prosecuted-2013-2">aggressive prosecution</a>.
Privacy expert Jordan Kovnot <a href="http://www.wnyc.org/shows/newtechcity/2013/feb/12/computer-fraud-and-abuse-act-it-too-broad/">told WYNC</a> that the 1984 amendment is considered by researchers to be outdated, and the language of the <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> "can be interpreted very broadly by prosecutors."
It seems that Auernheimer's <a href="https://twitter.com/rabite/status/319876575912939520">criticisms</a> of the law — the <a href="http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-valley/technology/290103-draft-cybersecurity-bill-aims-to-stiffen-computer-hacking-law">new version of which</a> appears to be even stricter — are being amplified as he serves time for breaking it.

Irreverent Hacker's Jail Cell Amplifies His Activism

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">Wikimedia</div></div></div>Andrew "weev" Auernheimer, the hacker who notoriously released hundreds of thousands of iPad owners' email addresses in an effort to call out AT&amp;T's lax security, was previously serving 41 months in prison, but will now go free due to a <a href="http://pdfserver.amlaw.com/nlj/auernheimer-op-usca3.pdf">federal appeals court's decision</a>.
The Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled federal prosecutors wrongly filed the case against him in New Jersey so they could use a Garden State law to enhance the charges against him. 
In reality, the court pointed out, none of the alleged crimes he committed actually took place in New Jersey. 
"No protected computer was accessed and no data was obtained in New Jersey," the court ruled.
From the decision: 
To enhance the potential punishment from a misdemeanor to a felony the Government alleged that Auernheimer's CFAA [Computer Fraud and Abuse Act] violation occurred in furtherance of a violation of New Jersey's computer crime statute.
The Third Circuit said this was problematic because prosecutors could enhance Auernheimer's punishment if they could prove that he was conspiring to violate the CFAA "in furtherance of a state crime."

So found Ralf-Philipp Weinmann, a research associate at the University of Luxembourg's Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust, when he reported three Chrome vulnerabilities to <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>'s "bug bounty" program.
<a href="https://www.computerworld.com/s/author/9000163/Gregg+Keizer">Gregg Keizer</a> of Computer World, who noticed the record<a href="https://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9238753/Google_pays_record_31K_bounty_for_Chrome_bugs"> $31,336 payout</a> on Google's <a href="http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/2013/04/stable-channel-update-for-chrome-os.html">blog</a>, notes that "All three of the vulnerabilities were labeled 'High,' the second-most-serious ranking in Chrome's four-step scoring system."
He also notes that there are usually two responses from IT professionals who find exploits: contact the company and possibly get a reward — or go public with the vulnerability.
Those who go public say they do so to make these companies more honest and more motivated to find the exploits on their own.
Yet publicizing these exploits can lead to stiff penalties: Andrew 'Weev' Auernheimer is currently serving a two-year sentence for <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/07/andrew-weev-auernheimer-conviction_n_2245218.html">turning over</a> the details of an AT&amp;T exploit to a Gawker reporter.
There's an darker side too, of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/zero-day-confessions-of-an-internet-mercenary-reveal-shadowy-hacker-market-2013-1">shadowy corporations and mercenary hackers</a> around the globe who sell exploits to organizations that may or may not be engaged in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/red-october-cyber-espionage-campaign-2013-1">malevolent operations</a>.
