And for the soldiers posted there, the sub-zero temperatures and the treacherous terrain are the biggest mortal threats, with ordinary amenities like bathing something of a ‘luxury.’<br /><br />Now waterless bathing products developed by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi are being dispatched to the soldiers. These products can reportedly be used even in extreme weather conditions of under 60 degrees centigrade, <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/soldiers-in-siachen-won-t-have-to-wait-90-days-for-a-bath-anymore/story-mAfeR54TquULnVQL6M8OKJ.html">reported</a> the Hindustan Times. <br /><br />Water Scarcity remains one of the major challenges for soldiers who are located at checkpoints as high as 21,700 feet. Every soldier has to live without bathing for about three months of their stay. Other options like melting the ice aren’t feasible because it requires a lot of fuel. <br /><br />The products have already been tested and ordered by a Kolkata-based Eastern Command that keeps a check on India’s disputed border with China.<br /><br />At any given point of time, India deploys nearly 3,000 soldiers to serve at the Siachen glacier. In their three month stay at the glacier, they have to trek for nearly a month to watch out for enemy movement covering a stretch of 128 kms at some of the most distant points. Most of the checkpoints on the glacier are above 16,000 feet above sea level. <br /><br />While the Eastern Command has already ordered thousands of products, other troops in high-altitude areas including Siachen are likely to get these products sooner. <br /><br />With the latest waterless hygiene products, the soldiers will be able to bathe twice a week. Why bathing may no longer be a ‘luxury’ for Indian soldiers deployed at the Siachen glacier - the world’s highest battlefield

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Four years after the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation <a href="https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/Research/Research-activity/Current-projects/research-projects/NanoMembrane-Toilet">awarded $710,000</a> for the development of a revolutionary waterless toilet, the technology has \&#xa0;received a second financial boost.</p><p>The Nano Membrane Toilet, as developers at Cranfield University call it, now has an additional grant that is "substantially more" than all prior funding, according to a Cranfield spokesperson, who declined to provide the exact amount. Researchers will use the money to continue developing the lab prototype and begin field trials in Africa.</p><p>Their mission is an important one: Estimates suggest <a href="http://www.one.org/international/issues/water-and-sanitation/">more than 2.4 billion people</a> around the world still live in unsanitary conditions. Without access to clean running water, these at-risk communities face life-threatening sanitation-related diseases.</p><p>The waterless and easy-to-use Nano Membrane is meant to offset this scarcity.&#xa0;</p><p>Alison Parker, a lecturer in International Water and Sanitation at Cranfield Water <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> Institute, says her team's new design is meant to serve poor urban areas, as those will be easiest to accommodate.</p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>"The toilet will be used in dense urban areas where a number of factors make providing good sanitation very challenging," Parker told Business Insider in March, after receiving the $710,000, "but where it would be possible to facilitate visits from a maintenance technician."<p>Since the toilet requires maintenance every six months, Parker says her team won't move into remote areas until the technology&#xa0;proves itself in cities.</p><h2><span>How the toilet works</span></h2><p><span>After a person has done their business and closed the lid, the rotating toilet bowl turns 270 degrees to deposit the waste in a vat underneath. A scraper tool then wipes off any residual waste from the bowl.</span></p><p>The solid waste stays on the bottom while the liquid rises to the top.</p><p><div></div></p><p>Extremely thin fibers, known as nanofibers, are arranged in bundles inside the chamber. They help move the water vapor that exists as part of the liquid waste into a vertical tube in the rear of the toilet.</p><p>Next, water passes through specially designed bundles that help condense the vapor into actual water, which flows down through the tube and settles in a tank at the front of the toilet.</p><p>As for the solid waste that's left behind, a battery-powered mechanism lifts the remaining matter out of the toilet and into a separate holding chamber. There it's coated in a scent-suppressing wax and left to dry out.</p><p><div></div></p><p>Every week, a local technician visits the community to remove the solid waste and water, and replace the toilet's batteries if needed. Residents can then use the water for tending to their plants, cleaning their homes, cooking, and bathing. The solid waste ends up at a thermo-processing plant to be turned into energy for the community.</p><p>According to Parker, one toilet can accommodate <a href="http://www.trust.org/item/20160107184637-2c2nk/">up to 10 people</a> for no more than $0.05 per day, per user - in line with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's original criteria for the prize. Field testing will begin later this year, Parker says.</p><p><div></div></p><p>One challenge moving forward, <a href="http://www.fastcoexist.com/3026114/take-a-seat-on-this-gates-funded-future-toilet-that-will-change-how-we-think-about-poop">which other designs have run into</a>, is scalability.</p><p>While many designs work in theory, actually getting the toilets to the countries that need them isn't easy.</p><p>Local communities have to create jobs specifically so that the toilets are safely and effectively maintained, and that training process can take time. Some scientists <a href="http://www.fastcoexist.com/3026114/take-a-seat-on-this-gates-funded-future-toilet-that-will-change-how-we-think-about-poop">have spent years</a> working on their designs, and they still aren't perfect.</p><p>Parker admits the problem of toilet paper is still one the Nano Membrane Toilet has yet to resolve, as users have no choice but to toss the paper into a nearby waste bin.</p><p>In the future, the team hopes to devise a way for that paper to be burnt. India was the cradle of civilization, a riverine world that had its proud foundation in the Indus Valley. Indian culture is thus interwoven with water. The holy Ganges, the early dip, the bathing ritual---all early Hindu practices are water-shot.<br />

Yet the paradox is that the most fertile nation is today one of the most water-challenged countries in the world, “<a href="http://www.wri.org/blog/2015/02/3-maps-explain-india%E2%80%99s-growing-water-risks">from its deepest aquifers to its largest rivers</a>”.<br />
 <br />
<strong>How much is too much?</strong><br />
 <br /> A report by the <keyword id="6356505" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Resources-Institute">World Resources Institute</keyword> shows that more than 100 million people in India live in severely polluted areas. Out of 632 districts examined, only 59 districts had water safe enough to drink. The area that is the most severely polluted is Bagalkot, Karnataka.<br />
 <br />
The statistics mock the country. While 54% of India’s total area faces the threat of water scarcity, almost 600 million people are not able to get enough. In a total population of 1.2 billion according to the 2011 census, India has just 1,000 cubic meters of water per person today, as against the US supply of nearly 8,000 cubic metres per person. Any country with less than 1,700 cubic meters per person per year is considered water-stressed.<br />
<br />
Even the most fertile region, which is the source of not only food but also her civilization and the Vedic culture, is the excessively high-stressed Northwest India, which produces 50 per cent of the national rice supply and 85 per cent of its wheat. This area is also called India’s “breadbasket.” But the 550 wells in Northwestern India face the danger of declining groundwater levels by 58 per cent.<br />
But why exactly, has this all happened?<br />

<strong>Why the <keyword id="6355836" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="water-crisis">water crisis</keyword>?</strong><br />
 The reasons are obvious. Even as the population is expanding, water supply is reducing, with farmers over-extracting the resource. Especially after the Green Revolution, groundwater, rather than surface water, is being overused to irrigate crops.<br />
<br />
There is not enough investment in technology and infrastructure at all federal, state, and local levels. Due to lack of efficient planning, shooting corporate privatization, industrial and human pollution and finally corruption, the lifeline of a healthy community has been threatened, according to <a href="http://thewaterproject.org/water-in-crisis-india">The Water Project</a>.<br />
<br />
South, West and Central India, on the other hand, have a significantly lower water table than other regions.<br />
<br />
In Eastern India, the strange paradox of abundant groundwater, but lack of electricity, has made water inaccessible for irrigation. All over the country, faulty distribution of electricity has stressed out agricultural practices.<br />
<br />
When examined at a national level, it is clear that the groundwater levels come down continuously, as its 4,000 wells show a reduction of 54% of the water supply in the past seven years. Almost 16% of the water reduces by over 1 meter (3.2 feet) annually.<br />
<br />
Moreover, the groundwater is extremely polluted as chlorine, fluoride, iron, arsenic, nitrate, and/or electrical conductivity exceed the national standards. Most of the water in India is not even fit for drinking, and sometimes not even for bathing. The Clean Ganga campaign never proceeded beyond a launch in 1984, due to lack of maintenance of the facilities.<br />
<br />
<strong>Improving water supply?</strong><br />
How do we increase water creation and storage, then? In the cities, a poor and leaky distribution network has led to large-scale leakage as well as “unaccounted water.” But with adequate pricing, and the use of private firms to streamline distribution, reliable water supply can be improved and pricing can be reduced, as in Dharwad.<br />
<br />
In rural areas, while recharging and harvesting water is important, such techniques have limited advantages. It is important to utilize water for local storage. In the long run, dams can be used, apart from full groundwater recharge, water harvesting, and recycling, in order to prevent it from getting lost in the oceans.<br />
<br />
However, two opposing viewpoints lock horns over the issue of dams. One section says that a worrying aspect of storage dams is its record of disturbing biodiversity and the environment, submerging and displacing people and disrupting their lifestyles, cultures, social support systems and emotional attachment to certain areas. Hence, instead of big dams, they advocate watershed development, involving leveling land and tapping rainwater in small ponds and check dams in streams, which can increase soil moisture, recharge groundwater, and facilitate a second crop.<br />
<br />
On the other hand, many heavy technology-oriented nation builders feel that storage dams cannot be neglected, considering the swelling population and the need to overcome the national crisis. They point out that while the population is expected to grow astronomically, the target increase of agriculture by 4% every year is essential to expand 140 million hectares (mh) of net cultivated area in India, even though only about 60 mh of land is irrigated today.<br />
<br />
<strong>Some new steps</strong><br /> One optimistic feature of India’s water development is that certain issues have been addressed, at least. In India’s eleventh five-year plan (2007–12), according to The <keyword id="467755" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Bureau-of-Asian-Research">National Bureau of Asian Research</keyword> some 15 mh through watershed development, as well as NGO-led efforts have paved the way to the program’s success.<br />
<br /> For example, <keyword id="57766" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anna-Hazare">Anna Hazare</keyword> transformed Ralegan Siddhi village in Maharashtra through water harvesting and cooperation.<br /> Another NGO called <keyword id="290378" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tarun-Bharat-Sangh">Tarun Bharat Sangh</keyword> brought about community-based development through water harvesting and management in Rajasthan. Even Gujarat built over 100,000 check dams, which are said to be the main reason for Gujarat’s 8%-plus growth rate of agricultural GDP.<br />
<br />
With a lot of focus on water management in the 12<sup>th</sup> Five-Year plan, there seems to be some attention being given to aquifer mapping, watershed development, reduction of pollution and treatment, and efficient management of irrigation.<br />
<br />
With sound partnership between the centre, state, municipal and private bodies, the water crisis can be blown over, point out the optimists.<br />
Can we then rise to the occasion and reach for the sodden skies and a fertile earth?<br />

<p>Within six months, the teenager had devised the formula for the gel.</p>
<p>Within a year, he had written up a 40-page business plan, applied for a patent and launched his startup, called <a href="http://headboy.org/">Headbody Industries</a>.  </p>
<p><span>The product idea sounds simple: You slap on the germ-killing lotion and then you don't need to take a bath. </span></p>
<p><span>For people with indoor plumbing this sounds like cool camping gear. But for 2.5 billion people worldwide who do not have access to clean water, DryBath is more of a life-saver than a tool of convenience. </span></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.gsea.org/">Global Student Entrepreneur Awards Program</a>, an international competition that recognizes <span>high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who own a business,</span> thought so, too. <span>In 2011, four years after <span>Marishane</span> hatched the idea for his ground-breaking product, he won the organization's Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year award, along with $10,000 in cash to finance his startup. </span></p>
<p><span><span>Marishane</span><span>, who was studying at the University of Cape Town at the time, </span>beat out 1,600 other student nominees from around the world.   </span></p>
<p>Despite its life-saving benefits, DryBath was initially inspired by <span><span>Marishane</span></span>'s friend who was too lazy to take a bath. The story goes that one day <span>Marishane </span>and some buddies were laying out in the sun when a friend turned to him and said: "Why doesn't someone invent something that you can put on your skin and then you don't have to bathe?" the <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/ludwick_marishane_a_bath_without_water.html">young entrepreneur revealed in a TEDTalk</a>. </p>
<p><span>That's when the light bulb went off.</span></p>
<p>Marishane, who at the time lived in the rural province of Limpopo, had limited resources. So he did most of his research on Google and Wikipedia using only his Internet-connected cell phone.</p>
<p><span>In poor communities, like <span>Marishane's</span> native <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword>, the gel will protect people who often die<span> from easily treatable diseases caused by bacteria that thrive in stagnant water. This water is transferred onto the skin, and get into <span><span>either</span></span> the gut (causing <span><span><span class="st">diarrhea</span></span></span> for example), or into an orifice like the eye (causing <span><span>trachoma, an eye infection that can cause blindness)</span></span>. In wealthier areas, the gel can be applied in a pinch when someone doesn't have time to rinse. The cleansing lotion conserves water in both scenarios.</span></span></p>
<p>Based on his knowledge from living in poor communities, <span>Marishane </span>made the decision to sell DryBath in individual packets, rather than in bulk. In Africa, a person "doesn't buy a box of cigarettes, they buy one cigarette each day, even though it's more expensive," he explained. </p>

Its debut product, the Spa Shower System, surrounds users in a warm cloud of mist and uses up to 70% less water than a traditional shower head. It costs $649.</p><p>Most shower systems, with their rain heads and removable wands, are priced between $100 and $400 <span>at </span><a href="https://www.homedepot.com/b/Search/N-5yc1vZcd03/Ntk-Extended/Ntt-shower+system?Ntx=mode+matchpartialmax&amp;NCNI-5">Home Depot</a>.</p><p><span>"We're introducing a totally new kind of shower experience," said Nebia CEO Philip Winter.</span></p><p>The company counts titans of tech, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google chairman Eric Schmidt, among its investors, and is on a mission to disrupt the way people consume water. </p><p>The Nebia Spa Shower System filters a stream of water through a surface that creates millions of tiny droplets, which in turn covers 10 times the surface area of a traditional shower head, according to the company. By creating more droplets from less water, Nebia promises a more efficient shower experience that doesn't sacrifice water temperature or pressure.</p><p>The system has been in development for three years. And it required about 1,000 people - including Cook and Schmidt - to strip down and take a shower to make sure it worked.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nebia</span></p><p class="caption">Philip Winter, cofounder and CEO of Nebia.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"A thousand people is not an insignificant number. It's not like you can share a link to you app and say, 'Try it at home!'" Winter said. Nebia partnered with local Equinox gyms, as well as Google, Apple, and Stanford University, to set up prototypes in their locker rooms. Nebia's cofounders sat at tables outside where they would interview volunteers about their experience.</p><p>Cook, the company's first angel investor, might be the company's biggest fan.</p><p>"He loved it immediately," Winter said.</p><p>Winter, who previously worked at a startup that made composting toilets for the developing world, said the Nebia Shower System is something you have to experience to believe. The company has a showroom in the back of its San Francisco headquarters where <a href="https://nebia.com/pages/experience-nebia">people can book an appointment time</a> and pop in for a shower. Bath products and towels are provided.</p><p>The $649 price tag, which comes with a one-year warranty, may be prohibitive for most. Winter likens the company's trajectory to that of Tesla, which has introduced more affordable vehicles through the years as the cost of manufacturing them came down. Nebia expects to do the same.</p><p>Customers will recoup part of the cost with use. A person living in New York City who takes a 10-minute shower daily can expect to save about $125 in water and gas heating annually, <a href="https://nebia.com/">according to the website</a>. The savings rise to $177 in San Francisco and $137 in Seattle.</p><p>"Showers have been the same for several decades. There hasn't been any meaningful innovation to speak of for longer than that," Winter said.
