Six wacky jobs won't believe you get paid for!

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>There are over 164,000 miles of highways in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-what-americas-highways-would-look-like-as-a-subway-map-2015-7">National Highway System</a>, and every single inch of this network needs to be periodically inspected for maintenance and repairs. </p><p>Volvo Trucks has teamed up with researchers at Virginia Tech's <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Institute to design a truck that can test more miles of road more efficiently than any of its predecessors. </p><p>Known as SCRIM, the <span>Sideway-force Coefficient Routine Investigation Machine, is a modified <span>Volvo VHD 430 vocational model outfitted with highly specialized instrumentation. It's 2,000-gallon tank gives SCRIM the ability to test 150 miles of highway without refilling.</span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>"The SCRIM uses a special tire to analyze road friction continuously, without locking the tire as other testers do," said<span> Edgar de León Izeppi, senior research associate for VTTI's Center for Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure, in a press release.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"This feature is important because continuous application gives a complete friction profile of the pavement surface and additionally simulates today's anti-lock braking systems better than a locked-wheel skid tester," he continued. </span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Short of taking a car out on a wet road and sliding around, testing how well tires can grip a particular road isn't easy. After spraying water on the road, the special wheel inside SCRIM can test just how much tires will slip and slide across the asphalt. </span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In addition to friction, other data points SCRIM scrubs includes <span>cross-slope, macro-texture, grade, temperature and curvature - all very important information for engineers and traffic planners. </span></span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>SCRIM had to be shipped all the way to the United Kingdom in order to be outfitted with the testing implements, a process that took months, Volvo says. I ask to myself as I crane my neck toward the gray clouds above me. As the seasons transition and weather forecasts shift with reckless abandon, it's becoming more difficult to tell <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/columbia-work-to-play-nylon-jacket-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">whether it's going to rain later</a> during the day.</p><p>That's not good news for your shoes, because if you end up wearing the wrong ones, your feet are trapped in the unholy embrace of wet socks. They're the most expensive of Allbirds' styles, likely due to the water-resistant treatment and sole design. </p><p>Allbirds differentiates these new sneakers from other water-resistant shoes on the market by emphasizing that it uses chemical-free, naturally derived materials to create its water-repellent treatment and water-resistant layer. The company as a whole is geared toward environmentally friendly practices, using materials like sustainably harvested eucalyptus pulp, recycled polyester made from plastic bottles, and carbon-negative EVA foam.</p><p>We tried the new Allbirds Mizzles to test their comfort and claims of water resistance. Our testers include first-time Allbirds wearers and longtime fans. </p><h2>Wool Runner Mizzle review: </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Allbirds</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>I own three different pairs of Allbirds (well, four now!), the original <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/allbirds-wool-runners-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wool Runners</a>, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/allbirds-tree-runner-skipper-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tree Skippers,</a> and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/allbirds-tree-breezer-flats-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tree Breezers</a>. The Wool Runners are still my favorite and the pair I wear the most after two years, but I do have to admit it takes a certain bravery to put them on during cold weather season and risk getting them wet. The softness and coziness of wool is exactly why you'd want to wear them when it rains, which is why I love that Allbirds now has a water-resistant version. </p><p>Since it didn't rain in the time I had to test the Wool Runner Mizzle, I couldn't test the claims of weather resistance directly. However, I did run them under the water of my faucet, with all the expected trepidation of anyone testing a waterproof or water-resistant product for the first time. </p><p>To my relief and happiness, the water slid right off (this effect was also very satisfying to watch). Some droplets stayed on the surface, but as I watched, they merely lingered there rather than absorb into the wool material. I tried ramping up the flow of the water, and the same thing happened, so I feel fairly confident about the material's performance in a real rain shower. <strong>-Connie Chen, reporter</strong></p><p>I've somehow never worn Allbirds before trying out the Mizzle. So while I can't compare the new weather-resistant shoes to the original, I can confirm they are as cozy as I hoped wool shoes would be. I tried the Wool Runner Mizzle and immediately felt as if I had swaddled my feet in a soft, warm blanket.</p><p>The fit was near-perfect (there was not even a hint of a blister, straight out of the box), but with one caveat: My big toes hit <em>just</em> a little too close to the front of the shoe. It's something to keep in mind if you're between sizes, or love super thick socks, and might need extra room. But it's not a total dealbreaker. Anytime there's a new style or color released I know there's an email thread of excitement on its way. I wasn't sure if the shoes would live up to the hype, but after trying the Wool Runner-Up Mizzle I'm officially a convert. </p><p>Beyond the fuzzy exterior that's also somehow water-resistant, the shoes are extremely comfortable right out of the box. The merino wool that lines the interior of the shoe provides a snug, blanket-like feel around my feet, and the bottom of the shoe is soft and squishy, but also supportive. The Runner-Up Mizzles are now my go-to shoe whenever I see a rainy day on my weather app. <strong>- Danny Bakst, content producer </strong></p><p>I have three pairs of Allbirds Runners (both Wool and Tree), and they're always my go-to shoes when the first thing I'm looking for is comfort. So I was a little bummed out when I tried my pair of Runner-Up Mizzles. I know I may get drawn and quartered by the Allbirds loyalists of the world for saying this (hey, I'm generally a big fan, too! I'm just doing my job here), but I found this pair to be uncomfortable. The top of the shoe rubs right up against my ankles, which I think is due to the fact that the opening of the shoe is pretty bulky. This is just my personal experience, and while I know the shoes will hold up to crappy weather (we ran water over them and it beaded right up), I don't think they're the pair I'll go for when I'm commuting to work. - <strong>Sally Kaplan, editor </strong></p><p>I knew Allbirds was onto something when, during a meeting, one of the participants stopped me in mid-speech to tell me how awesome my Wool Runner-Up Mizzle looked. Indeed, it blends the cool high-top silhouette with the fuzzy wool exterior that Allbirds is known for.</p><p>While I haven't had the opportunity to wear them long-term, there are some things that I noticed right away. Right out of the box, the Wool Runner-Up Mizzle slipped onto my feet easily and cushioned them with a soft feeling that's reminiscent of how my bedroom slippers feel.</p><p>But like my colleague Emily, I find some areas to be a bit tight, like the big toe and the top of the feet. My feet also feel like they were incubating, so I'd recommend wearing thinner socks to allow for some breathability (although wool absorbs moisture well) or save these for colder weather. Allbirds now makes water-resistant shoes - here's your first look, plus our verdict

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em; font-size: 15px;">When Lynne Tolley, the great-grand niece of Jack Daniel, applied to be a whiskey taster at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jack-daniel-distillery-pictures-2013-12">Jack Daniel Distillery</a>, she had to go through the same rigorous selection process as everyone else.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">I tried that card and they turned me down because they put me through tests for a whole year," Tolley said. "Then they finally said, 'Yeah, you can taste.' I must have great taste buds because I was selected to taste our premium Single Barrel Whiskey."</span></p>
<p>Thus for the last 20 years, Tolley has held the title of Master Whiskey Taster, one of five people tasked with tasting the distillery's premium whiskey. She is one of around 50 tasters in total. </p>
<p>"I have the best job in the world. I get paid to taste Jack Daniel's every week," Tolley said. </p>
<p>Tolley also runs Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House down the street from the Jack Daniel Distillery. For more than 100 years, Miss Mary Bobo was paid to house and feed guests visiting the distillery. When she died in 1983, the distillery bought the property to preserve it. </p>
<p>"People forget that we are in a dry county here in Lynchburg and that you can't buy alcohol. The first thing they do when they come to Miss Mary Bobo's is order a cocktail. Every day we have one or two [foods] on the menu that has Jack Daniel's whiskey," Tolley said.</p>
<p>We ask Tolley a few questions about getting paid to taste Jack Daniel's<span>:</span></p>
<p><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">How does the testing process work?</strong></p>
<p>"Every Friday we go into a room and there will be three glasses on a table. Each glass has a little cover over so you slide that off and smell the aroma of the whiskey. You have to pick out the whiskey that is unlike the other two. See, one whiskey sample is taken from a different barrel. We are tasting to make sure that our product is consistent year-to-year. So we taste for consistency and quality control."</p>
<p>"Now, if you are tasting Single Barrel like I do it's a little different. You'll go in a room and there may be 50 glasses on the table. It always starts with the aroma of the whiskey. If you smell something that you think is a little different then you are allowed to taste it. Now after it sits on your pallet you are supposed to spit it out and then you have to drink water and move to the next sample. We don't mess around with eating Saltine crackers or anything like that."</p>
<p><strong>Do the samples smell the same after a while?</strong></p>
<p>"You know how when you go to perfume counters at department stores and they'll give you coffee beans to sniff after you've tried different perfumes? The same thing happens with whiskey. My trick is I smell the back of my hand. If you smell your skin, like the skin on the back of your hand, it clears out your nose. So that's my little trick."</p>
<p><strong><strong>As a relative of Jack d</strong>id you have to go through the same testing process as other candidates? </strong></p>
<p>"It was about 20 years ago when I said to the guys at the distillery, 'Guys, I wanna become a taster.' I thought I could maybe get an easier time becoming one because I am a descendant of Jack. It's in my blood. <span>They said to me, 'No, no, no we gotta check you to see if you can be a taster.' So, I tried that card and they turned me down because they put me through tests for a whole year. Then they finally said, 'Yeah, you can taste.' I must have great taste buds because I was selected to taste our premium Single Barrel Whiskey."</span></p>
<p><strong>What do you taste?</strong></p>
<p><span>"I </span><span>think all the tasters look for something different. </span><span>I always look for caramel, vanilla and sort of a toasted oak. There is this nuttiness. It's like the smell if you were cooking with roasted pecans. I always look for vanilla. Did you know you can substitute vanilla for Jack Daniel's when you're cooking? I do that at Miss Mary Bobo's." </span></p>
<p><span><strong>Is there anything special you do before you go in to taste the whiskey?</strong></span></p>
<p><span>"I like to go and taste when im hungry because I feel like I can taste the whiskey better. I also don't wear any perfume that day. I think women are the best tasters because we have the best noses. That's just my personal opinion though. At the distillery it's about 50/50 men and women," Tolley said.</span></p>
<p><strong>What was it like growing up as a descendant of Jack Daniel?</strong></p>
<p>"You know, I have one brother and we grew up here and we never thought anything about it. The distillery wasn't as well known as it was now. It's a big deal now. I went to college in Georgia and I never mentioned my famous uncle. I just thought, 'well who wants to hear about any of that?"</p>
<p><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">Do you get any perks for being a Jack Daniel's taste-tester?</strong></p>
<p>"We do. The first Friday of every month every employee gets a bottle of Jack Daniel's Old No. 7. We also get a commemorative bottle during the holiday season and on 4th of July. Since I am a taster, I usually get a gift that says '<span>Master Whiskey Taster Jack Daniel's Distillery' on it. Those gifts are quite the conversation starter when we go to conventions."</span></p>
