<ul><li><keyword id="11585629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baptist-Christian-Hospital">Baptist Christian Hospital</keyword> has integrated Qure.ai’s <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> solution to read brain CT scans in a matter of seconds.</li><li>About 150 people are affected by strokes in Assam every day and 54,890 on a yearly basis.</li><li>Baptist Christian Hospital has been using the technology since March-April 2021 and has been diagnosing about 100 patients on a monthly basis.</li></ul> Nestled in the foothills of Himalayas, the Baptist Christian Hospital, in the Tezpur town of Assam, decided to move away from its traditional radiology solution in order to provide faster treatment to its patients affected by strokes and concussions. The hospital, which largely caters to the tea plantation workers in and around the town, has integrated Qure.ai’s artificial intelligence solution since then to read the brain CT scan in a matter of seconds. <div type="image" title="A small hospital in a remote corner of Assam is using AI to detect strokes in tea planters" msid="84194124" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Baptist Christian Hospital in Tezpur, Assam&amp;lt;br /&amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Not many are aware, but strokes are one of the <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/health/haemorrhagic-stroke-rate-highest-in-india-s-northeastern-states/story-2A4TFEVpDvE34HAgqMaDLP.html">major causes</a> of death in the Assamese region. About 150 people are affected by strokes in Assam every day and 54,890 on a yearly basis, according to a<a href="https://www.sentinelassam.com/guwahati-city/stroke-affects-54890-every-year-in-assam-gnrc/"> study</a> released by a local hospital GNRC in 2018. One of its previous <a href="https://www.telegraphindia.com/north-east/48-die-of-stroke-daily-in-assam-study/cid/1626782">reports</a> published in 2014 highlighted that 48 people die of these strokes in the state. The situation is definitely a tough one in the region and it is aggravated due to the lack of radiologists — medical practitioners who use medical imaging to diagnose and treat diseases on the scene. According to a Global Healthcare Insights <a href="https://globalhealthi.com/2017/04/20/medical-imaging-india/">report </a>published in 2017, there are about 10,000 practicing radiologists in India and it is not enough. Prashant <keyword id="1967905" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Warrier">Warrier</keyword>, co-founder and chief executive of Qure.ai, tells Business Insider that India has about 15,000 radiologists as of 2021 and they are usually concentrated in the metro or Tier I cities. This leads to people from suburban areas to either travel long distances to go to a healthcare facility or hospitals to rely on third-party radiologists. Both these solutions are not only inconvenient, but also not efficient. Dr. Jemin J Webster of the Baptist Christian Hospital highlights that they used to rely on tele-radiology services that took about two hours to get readings of routine scans and about half-an-hour to one hour to get reading on emergency cases. While the doctors too are self sufficient to handle such delays, but a quick reading can make a huge difference. The matters related to strokes and concussions are highly sensitive, as millions of brain cells are dying per minute. Even a delay of a few minutes can cause body functions like walking or talking to shut down. Therefore, Qure.ai decided to integrate its qER technology in Baptist Christian Hospital, a 130-bed secondary care hospital by non-profit Emmanuel Hospital Association of New Delhi. How does the qER actually work? Warrier expl<keyword id="6355999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai">ai</keyword>ned that there are two parts to their artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled deep learning solution — the gateway and the application programming interface (API). The gateway are the x-ray machines and the computed tomography (CT) scan machines that collect the inputs from the healthcare centres and transfer it to the cloud. The API, then, scans, processes and creates a radiology report based on their algorithm. Notably, the company anonymises all the data before sending it from gateway to API to maintain users’ privacy. Baptist Christian Hospital has been using the technology since March-April 2021 and has been diagnosing about 100 patients on a monthly basis. Dr Webster noted that the technology has enabled them to get the test results much faster. “The report comes through two systems. One our original PACS system, a system through which we see whatever CT images we have done within our hospitals. The analysed reports are uploaded into the system also, and one more good thing is that they have integrated with messaging app Telegram. So whenever a CT for a patient is done, it comes with an alert on Telegram. In that manner, it is like you are pushing a patient for CT scan and by the time they are back, you get an alert on your phone with an analysis on their condition.” <div type="image" title="A small hospital in a remote corner of Assam is using AI to detect strokes in tea planters" msid="84194183" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;AI at Baptist Christian Hospital&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Dr. Pooja Rao, co-founder and head of research and development (R&amp;D) at Qure.ai, emphasised that the data is accurate. The company has trained their deep learning algorithms with a large as well as diverse data bank sourced from research labs. The company also publishes its accuracy rate on a regular basis, peer review publications and keeps updating its technology often. Qure.ai has received US’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Europe’s CE certifications to validate this technology. Qure.ai has been using the same technology, with few variations, to detect tuberculosis and lung infections as well. Even the <keyword id="6356311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health-Organisation">World Health Organisation</keyword> (WHO) has <a href="https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/340255/9789240022676-eng.pdf">validated</a> that Qure.AI’s tuberculosis diagnostic software can replace human specialists in its annual Integrated Tuberculosis Screening Guidelines. It also partnered with British-Swedish pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/astrazeneca-qure-ai-to-bring-ai-solutions-for-early-detection-of-lung-cancer/articleshow/79609309.cms">early detection</a> of lung cancer. The use cases of the technology can be further expanded to diagnose other health issues by training the algorithm, Dr Rao added. AI can essentially aid medical staff Over the last year, the company’s qXR technology is also being used to detect COVID-19 across the world and also carried out operations in remote parts of Maharashtra as well as Jharkhand. CEO Warrier added that Qure.ai’s lung X-Ray system, when coupled with other metrics oxygen saturation, temperature and more, can be used to diagnose COVID-19 in areas where RT-PCR tests are not available. He noted that even In India, the quality of care is much higher in big hospitals like Apollo and others, as they have quality radiologists. The quality of healthcare gets even better in high income countries. “The value [for such AI solutions] for a place like Assam is very different because they don't have a radiologist on duty and for them interpreting that scan is very challenging. You are basically asking somebody who's not a radiologist to interpret the scan and correspondingly act on that patient during surgery, administering a blood thinner or something like that. The value in Assam, or Africa or Southeast Asian countries is tremendous because we can help those non-radiologists interpret x-rays or CT scans without necessarily getting radiologist input, ” he added. A team of researchers led by Professor Alastair Denniston from the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom conducted a study in 2019, to determine whether AI can diagnose illnesses as effectively as healthcare professionals. The study <a href="https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/326460#AI-on-a-par-with-healthcare-professionals">noted</a> that AI correctly diagnoses diseases in 87% of the cases, whereas detection by healthcare professionals yielded an 86% accuracy rate. The specificity for deep learning algorithms was 93%, compared with humans’ at 91%. Qure.ai has raised about $16 million to date from Sequoia Capital India and MassMutual Ventures Southeast Asia. It has marked its presence across 450 sites across 40 countries over the years. The Australian government has suspended all flights from India till May 15, leaving around 9,000 Aussies, including cricketers and former cricketers in IPL, stranded in the country that is reeling under the pandemic with fresh Covid-19 cases between 3.5-4 lakh being reported daily. "CA and the ACA respect the decision of the Australian Government to pause travel from India until at least May 15 and will not seek exemptions," said their joint statement on Tuesday. While three of the <keyword id="88198" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aussie-players">Aussie players</keyword> in IPL  Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson (Royal Challengers Bangalore) and Andrew Tye (Rajasthan Royals)  left for Australia before the government imposed flight ban, the remaining cricketers stayed back. Umpire Paul Reiffel decided to return but could not as his flight via Qatar too were cancelled. On Tuesday, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison backtracked on the possibility of jailing those arriving to Australian shores from India following heavy criticism back home. Through this arrangement, customers will be able to retain cash in their account and use it only when they actually pay for something. <ul><li>As IPL’s bio bubble breaches and two players Varun Chakravarthy, Sandeep Warrier test positive for COVID-19, BCCI has suspended IPL for this season. </li><li>Experts tell us about the impact cancellation of India’s biggest sporting tournament and advertising extravaganza can have on our brands and the media industry.</li></ul>Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the most keenly awaited events in India, has also felt the heat of Coronavirus. Over the last two days, several players from three IPL teams have tested COVID positive. This includes Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier, Delhi Capitals’ (DC) Amit Mishra and now, SRH’s Wriddhiman Saha. After much criticism, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has finally announced today that IPL has been suspended for this season. While the recent spike in COVID cases has brought our country to a grinding halt and forced every sporting activity to be either postponed indefinitely or cancelled, IPL continued, becoming an escape from the grim reality for many. It was acting as a bandaid on our wounds -- temporary yet effective. IPL is also one of the biggest advertising carnivals and this year, reports indicate that more brands have invested in the tournament. According to TAM Sports, average ad volumes during the first 22 matches of IPL 14 grew by 2% compared to IPL 13. Tally of categories grew by 10%, whereas count of advertisers and brands decreased by 3% and 9% respectively in IPL 14 than IPL 13. When brands started buying ad spots on IPL and bidding on the sponsorship deals, the COVID cases in India were going down and the economy was improving. Advertising agencies usually work on their IPL pitches for at least two months and spend many sleepless nights executing their ideas. Media planning and buying agencies also wait for IPL to buy the best deal for their clients. However, the situation is getting severe with each passing day. Given the gravity of the pandemic in India, there has been an ongoing debate on whether IPL should be pulled down. Now, after a few players have tested positive and the bio bubble has been breached, BCCI has decided to suspend IPL. We reached out to experts to understand how cancellation of IPL can impact brands. Vani Gupta Dandia, Founder, CherryPeachPlum Growth said cancellation might add to consumers' anxiety. "I understand there are a lot of us in dire circumstances but canceling IPL doesn't help people get well. It's a welcome distraction from the otherwise grim news we're inundated with. Cancellation will also cause further anxiety and fear - we need some markers of normality. Lives, livelihoods, and mental wellness are all important in equal measure," said she. Lloyd Mathias, Business Strategist and former Marketing Head of PepsiCo, Motorola and HP APAC said, “The continuation of the IPL amidst the pandemic is questionable now, given that the secure bio bubbles have been breached. But even aside from this breach, the continuation points to a certain disregard for the suffering and misery millions of Indians are facing.” A Duff &amp; Phelps’ report had recently said that the value of the IPL Ecosystem was estimated to be impacted by nearly $1 billion only due to cancellation and without capturing the impact of the economic slowdown that might follow. Last year too, the pandemic had made a dent on the league. The IPL Ecosystem’s value plunged by 3.6% to Rs 45,800 crore during season 13 from Rs 47,500 crore IPL 2019. The report further said that this was largely due to Vivo pulling out of the title sponsorship deal, additional costs involved to create a secure bio-bubble environment, lack of gate receipts, etc. The individual franchisees also saw a reduction in their brand values in 2020 compared to 2019, largely due to reduced franchisee-related sponsorship revenue, loss of gate receipts, reduced food and beverage (F&amp;B) revenue, and certain teams’ on-field performances and off-the-field issues. The new sponsor, Dream11, had entered at a steep discount, and the IPL had to take a hit of Rs 218 crores in sponsorship revenues in 2020. However, Mathias reminded us that BCCI insures IPL. “If the IPL does get called off at this stage it will certainly hurt financially, but remember the BCCI is a very rich body, and this financial loss is an insignificant price to pay in comparison to the larger catastrophe all around. Also, insurance may help cover part of the damages, suffered by the teams, the sponsors, and the broadcaster,” said he. Star Sports has roped in 18 sponsors and over 100 advertisers across multiple brand categories and many small businesses have invested a large amount of their marketing budget on IPL this year. BCCI has also gone all out in its bid to host IPL this year. According to media reports, BCCI is slated to earn Rs 3,500 crore in advertising revenue from the 2021 season. Star charged around Rs 8 to 10 lakh for a 10 seconder last year. Star has previously charged brands Rs 25 lakh for 10-second slots during the India vs Pakistan ICC World Cup match and between Rs 16 to 18 lakh for other World Cup matches. In comparison, the IPL ad charges are still reasonable but the rates are among the costliest for a programme in the country. So, how badly will this hurt Indian brands? Karthik Srinivasan, Social Media Expert and Independent Brand Consultant, answered, “I don't think the brands, per se, would be impacted, not at least in terms of branding. They are already hugely affected in terms of demand, and sales, because the 2nd wave has washed over everything else.” Three days before IPL began, the number of positive cases in India had crossed 1,25,89,067, and the death toll stood at 165K -- and it was growing with each passing day. Harish Bijoor, Brand Guru and Founder, Harish Bijoor Consults Inc said that brands would have analysed every situation before the tournament began. Bijoor said, “The pandemic is all about uncertainty. IPL and its fixtures are part of this uncertainty. Yes, brands will have their plans tampered with, especially with IPL money outlays kept in mind. However, the important point is that health comes before everything else. The bubble has burst to an extent. The bubble format of IPL has been breached with yesterday's incident. Brands have to grin and bear it. In reality, nothing is a surprise anymore. Brands have visualised this possibility, and it has been factored into plans for sure.” Vani Gupta Dandia, on the other hand, shared how months of hardwork will go down the drain if IPL is canceled. "After 2020 a lot of pent up demand was expected to manifest in 2021. After a disappointing 2020, advertisers were betting big on IPL. Spots were booked early this year, when there was hope of the COVID pandemic ending in 2021. IPL in particular brings the house together- everyone loves cricket. Annual plans and quarterly targets are constructed around the spurt in demand expected from the advertising spends on IPL. So cancellation at this stage will mean desperate scrambling to rework the media plan, besides losing time." <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Alternative strategy" text="Alternative strategy">Alternative strategy</cmsannotation> Experts we spoke to said whether IPL continues or not, brands should reconsider advertising during what is possibly one of the worst calamities we have faced in recent times. Srinivasan highlighted how ad spend will be a smaller wound but rebuilding reputation might take eons. “The brands continuing to advertise happy, nice things to buy would, at one point, seem utterly insensitive and out of touch. So, in a way, IPL being cancelled is perhaps for the best for these brands, despite the money being invested. After all, reputation is more important than money in the long run, and the brands being presumed to be insensitive and out of touch with the horrendous reality unfolding in our country, is far worse for them,” said Srinivasan. Mathias also said that functional advertising can wait. “It would be wonderful if the IPL uses its reach and financial muscle to amplify and help people. Teams, sponsors, cricket stars can come together and pledge part of their incomes to support this humanitarian disaster. This will also help reduce the valid feeling of the IPL’s tone-deafness, to the misery all around. As BCCI suspends IPL 2021, experts share how it could impact the ad, marketing and the entertainment world

New Delhi, Dec 12 () Global payments technology major Mastercard has joined hands with Federal Bank to provide an additional layer of security for digital transactions.
 Mastercard has entered into a partnership with Federal Bank to offer identity check to the bank's cardholders, it said in an announcement.
 Mastercard Identity Check is a global authentication program that uses the latest authentication standards of EMV 3-D Secure to provide an additional layer of security for digital transactions and facilitate higher approval rates, improving the authentication experience for merchants, issuers and cardholders.
 It provides banks with a secure and user-friendly way to authenticate cardholders without the use of static passwords, increasing approval rates.
 The facility decreases online shopping cart abandonment, reduces fraud and improves conversion rates for e-commerce merchants. Implementation in other regions has shown an increase in digital transaction approvals of nearly 13 per cent.
 "We believe that this new solution will provide a seamless experience and will find instant affinity among our Mastercard cardholders," said Shalini Warrier, chief operating officer, Federal Bank.

UK police arrest 16th person in connection with Manchester attack as security services probe missed warnings

Companies like SAP, General Mills, Snapdeal and Marico are scouting for best talent to strengthen their respective technology competencies, especially in mobility, big data and analytics. 
 
They are aggressively hiring techies from India and abroad. SAP plans to add 1,000 engineers in next one year to its lab in India, its second-largest globally. For this, it will increase the intake of graduates from the country's premier engineering colleges. 
 
Due to shortage of niche talent, the company will look for techies overseas, including Silicon Valley and Europe. 
 
Economic Times reported that about 70% of the German software company's 6,500 employees in India are part of its R&amp;D and product engineering, while 20% are in consulting and implementation and the rest in sales and marketing. 
 
"Hires will be largely in R&amp;D and product engineering. In the past 75% of professionals with experience in SAP technology were hired and only 25% hiring was niche skills. This year the ratio will change to 50:50, between conventional SAP hiring and high-end technology-data scientists, research analysts and architects," Anil Warrier, director and India head of talent acquisition at SAP, told ET. 
 
SAP is looking to both groom talent from within and new hires. Apart from offering stocks to attract talent, the company is banking on other benefits. "SAP offers its employees work across the globe. Here, you can easily work in four or five locations. High percentage of our leadership team is people who have joined us as college graduates," Warrier told the financial daily. 
 
India’s online marketplace Snapdeal wants to double the number of people in its technology team by appointing 1,000 people by the end of this year, including talent from Silicon Valley to build a product and engineering leadership team. 
 
"We will bring in the best of talent in the space of technology as technology is the backbone for runining a big enterprise like ours," Saurabh Nigam, Vice President of HR at Snapdeal, told ET. 
 
Meanwhile, Managing Director at General Mills Mainak Dhar said the company intends to up the manufacturing at its Indian plant for which it was required to have more talent around technology. 
 
Marico is looking for experts in cutting edge technologies to further build its consumer product offerings. “We are looking at talent beyond India especially to build our strength around innovation and R&amp;D," Ashutosh Telang, Marico's chief human resources officer, told financial daily.

The offer, which also envisages a merger between GVT and Telecom Italia's own Brazilian unit Tim Participacoes, outbid a 6.7 billion euros offer unveiled by Spanish telecom group Telefonica on Aug. 5.
However, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-08-28/telecom-italia-offers-9-2-billion-for-gvt-to-rival-telefonica.html" target="_blank">within minutes of Telecom Italia's offer</a>, Spain's Telefonica said it was raising its bid for GV to 7.45 billion euros, Bloomberg reported.
