<ul class="summary-list"><li>Henry Cavill is to star in and executive produce a "Warhammer 40,000" series at Amazon.</li><li>The British actor left Netflix's "The Witcher" series back in October.</li></ul><p>Things are starting to look up for <a href="https://www.insider.com/henry-cavill-was-told-wasnt-lean-enough-for-james-bond-2021-8">Henry Cavill</a>, as he's found his next project after leaving Netflix's "The Witcher" in October, and recently <a href="https://www.insider.com/henry-cavill-confirms-he-will-no-longer-play-superman-2022-12">being dropped as Superman</a> by Warner Bros. </p><p>It's been a tumultuous few months for the star, since it originally looked like he was back as the Man of Steel thanks to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/black-adam-end-credits-explained-2022-10">"Black Adam" post-credits scene</a>, but James Gunn confirmed that the studio's new direction will not involve Cavill reprising the role.</p><p>The star's next project is a "Warhammer 40,000" series for Amazon. <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/12/henry-cavill-star-warhammer-40000-film-tv-franchise-amazon-studios-1235200833/">Deadline</a> reported that the studio has acquired the rights for the franchise, with Cavill on board to star and produce in the science-fiction series, and a feature film is also possible.</p><p>Cavill is an avid "Warhammer 40,000" player and he explained in a statement that it's an honor to get the chance to help bring it to the screen.</p><p>He said: "I have loved 'Warhammer' since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me. The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honor and the responsibility."</p><p>Cavill added: "I couldn't be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon Studios and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh on lifelong dream come true."</p><p>The British actor has always been a self-confessed "Warhammer 40,000" geek, as he previously told "The Graham Norton Show" about his hobby: "It is fun, it sounds ridiculous, but it is fun."</p><p>Amazon acquiring the rights for "Warhammer 40,000" has clearly been in the pipeline for a while, and this news comes as a welcome salve for Cavill after his recent departure from Superman.</p><p>Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said: "'Warhammer 40,000' has captured the imagination of fans of all ages, from all walks of life, and all over the world. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Fantasy figurine retailer <keyword id="3347601" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="games-workshop">Games Workshop</keyword> saw a 70% rise in profits over the <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword>.</li><li>Games Workshop announced it's giving $6,900 bonuses to its employees as a result. </li><li><keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> gave its employees a $1,500 <keyword id="50592" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bonus">bonus</keyword> earlier this month.</li></ul><p>Games Workshop, the UK retailer behind the hugely popular fantasy tabletop game "<keyword id="1347591" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Warhammer">Warhammer</keyword>," has given its staff a huge £5,000 ($6,934) bonus for their work over the pandemic.</p><p>The company announced the bonuses for its 2,600 staff during its annual results call on Wednesday, as reported by <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/28/games-workshop-hands-staff-a-5000-bonus-after-bumper-lockdown-sales.html?">CNBC</a> and <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jul/27/warhammer-maker-games-workshop-hands-staff-5000-bonus-after-lockdown-sales-surge">The Guardian</a>. Meanwhile, its adjusted earnings per share of $0.01 missed estimates by $0.10.</p><p>But investors were encouraged by the toy company's strong growth in its Magic: The Gathering franchise, helping settle <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/hasbro-dilutes-magic-the-gathering-brand-stock-price-bank-america-2023-2">ongoing fears from one Wall Street analyst</a> that its customer base <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-magic-the-gathering-cards-fans-are-upset-hasbro-expensive-2023-2">was suffering from wallet fatigue</a> after Hasbro launched a number of new card sets over the past two years.</p><p>"I'd say Hasbro is in the midst of a turnaround and we're showing healthy indications that the turnaround is taking hold in the first quarter," Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said, adding that Magic: The Gathering saw its revenue jump 16% in the quarter.</p><p>Much of the continued strength in Magic: The Gathering is being driven by content-related mashups of the game with other popular media properties, like Warhammer.</p><p>And another upcoming crossover that Cocks expects to drive continued growth in the franchise is its mashup with Lord of the Rings.</p><p>"Our first one [media crossover] was with a game called Warhammer and we're already on our fourth reprint for that, and then we have a huge one coming up in Q2 with Lord of the Rings, [and] that's already setting records for preorders," he said.</p><p>The strength in Magic: The Gathering is challenging the idea that its core customer base is growing tired of trying to keep up with all of the new releases of card sets.</p><p>"Within its Wizards segment, Hasbro continues to destroy customer goodwill by trying to over-monetize its brands," <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/bac-stock?miRedirects=1">Bank of America</a> analyst <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/hasbro-dilutes-magic-the-gathering-brand-stock-price-bank-america-2023-2">Jason Haas said in a February note.</a></p><p>Late last year, Haas said in a note that after talking to several players, collectors, and local game stores, "the primary concern is that Hasbro has been overproducing Magic cards which has propped up Hasbro's recent [earnings] results but is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/magic-the-gathering-collectors-pay-thousands-cards-compare-investment-to-bitcoin-2018-8?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets&amp;_gl=1*19qkula*_ga*MTkxNzQzNjc2Mi4xNjYxNDU2MDU1*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTY3NTgwMjExNC43MDAuMS4xNjc1ODAyMTQyLjAuMC4w&amp;utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets" rel="">destroying the long-term value of the brand.</a>"</p><p>Insider also spoke with a comic store owner earlier this year and found similar sentiment. </p><p>"There's a lot of wallet fatigue," Brooklyn-based Action City Comics owner Eric LaGaccia <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-magic-the-gathering-cards-fans-are-upset-hasbro-expensive-2023-2">told Insider.</a> "In order to be competitive, you want the latest cards, and the cards you just spent a lot of money on are now obsolete."</p><p>But for now, that wallet fatigue among a certain group of Hasbro's core customers isn't enough to slow down what has become one of its top-selling brands.</p>

But then Tyrion walks past, heading towards the boat, and the guards appear to change their minds.&#xa0;<p>When they come back to the boats, Davos engages in conversation with them once again. A major 'Game of Thrones' set leak has fans psyched about a character's new weapon

At least according to Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke, who offered retired "Starcraft 2" player Ryoo "SeleCT" Kyung Hyun an internship based on his past accomplishments.</p><p>SeleCT stopped playing video games competitively in 2014 but he won more than $80,000 playing "Starcraft 2" and "Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War" before the age of 25. These days he's a <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/dm9fph/hi_select_here_what_have_i_been_doing_how_did_i/">senior in the University of Washington</a>'s computer science program, and he recently posted to Twitter seeking a software engineering internship for the summer of 2020.</p><p>Lütke responded directly, offering SeleCT a place in Shopify's internship program. Lütke said SeleCT's Starcraft career was enough evidence to secure the job, and esports fans celebrated the offer on Twitter and Reddit. Lütke followed up with a response on Reddit, explaining that he had won a "Starcraft" tournament in the late 90s and was a longtime fan of the game.</p><p>"It's insanely hard to become a pro in Starcraft, significantly harder than it is to get a degree. So I feel like this should be highly valuable on a CV. My offer to bring in ex pro players is more general than my offer to select for an internship," <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/dl3o2p/billionaire_shopify_ceo_finds_out_on_twitter_that/f4my8oi/">Lütke wrote on Reddit.</a></p><p>He continued, "Shopify has a history of bringing in people in by alternative proofs of doing something difficult. We've got some chess GMs, Olympians, etc. It's a huge privilege to work with dedicated and driven people like that."</p><p><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/dl3o2p/billionaire_shopify_ceo_finds_out_on_twitter_that/f4my8oi/">Lütke</a> went on to discuss his excitement about the growing esports industry and Shopify's recruitment tactics with fellow posters. This new war game takes just about every fantasy genre ever and smashes it all together in a bloody mess

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Ben Lupo, 31, is one of the most popular broadcasters on Twitch, the Amazon-owned service that lets people live-stream themselves playing video games to an online audience.</strong></li><li><strong>We talked to Lupo over the phone to learn more about how he got to where he is today.</strong></li></ul><p>&#xa0;</p><p>Ben Lupo sat in the basement of his house, in his favorite chair, watching home movies.</p><p>It was around 9 a.m. His father, James, had just passed away a few hours earlier. He had suffered a heart attack while alone in his office at Creighton University, where he'd worked as a professor of psychology for 40 years. He was 68 years old.</p><p>"I basically sat there and bawled my eyes out," Lupo told me on the phone, recalling that morning.</p><p>Lupo said he sat in his chair for over two hours before he did the only thing he knew how to do in that moment.</p><p>"I kicked the stream on, with no alerts, no webcam, no nothing," he said. "I just sat, and I played 'Fortnite,' and I talked. I talked for a little bit, and I cried for a little bit. It was the only thing I knew to do to escape from my own mental black hole."</p><p>Lupo, 31, is one of the most popular broadcasters on Twitch, the Amazon-owned service that lets people live-stream themselves playing video games. On Twitch, where he is known as "DrLupo," the Omaha, Nebraska native has over 2.5 million followers; thousands of people watch his channel at any given moment.</p><p>Lupo says he plays video games on Twitch for around 80 hours a week - a little over 11 hours per day.</p><p>Lupo is also popular among other Twitch streamers, who showed their support on the morning of his father's death along with the thousands of other messages from fans and viewers.</p><p>Twitch is full of smaller, tight-knit communities focused on specific games, but many people watch Lupo regardless of what he's playing, whether it's "Destiny 2" or "Fortnite" or "Call of Duty." Perhaps that's because so many people, through watching his daily game streams, have come to know Lupo for the person he is, and not just the entertainer in front of the camera.</p><p>One of Lupo's biggest supporters is Tyler "Ninja" Blevins, the most popular streamer on Twitch and one of the biggest names in the world of gaming.</p><p>Lupo and Blevins met while playing "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" against each other: Lupo perfectly lobbed a grenade that killed Tyler, who then messaged him afterwards offering to play "duos" together. Lupo called it "the luckiest stroke of my life" - Ninja's massive viewership on Twitch helped Lupo grow his own nascent channel to where it is today, and his real-life friendship with Blevins "feels like family."</p><p>Lupo, similarly, treats his viewers like family. He regularly opens up on camera;&#xa0;when he's not thanking donors and subscribers, he's talking about his life, his schedule that day, his wife Samantha, his three-year-old son, or his exciting work opportunities coming up. Watching his Twitch stream feels less like watching a random gamer play a game, and more like hearing from an old friend.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Lupo grew up playing games with others.&#xa0;As the youngest of four - all boys - his three older brothers turned him onto tabletop games like "Dungeons and Dragons" and "Warhammer 40,000." Lupo even remembers his mother, Regina, playing Tetris with him on his NES every morning before taking him to kindergarten.</p><p>But their father, James, rarely joined in on the fun. He was more into solo activities, like playing solitaire or reading one of the hundreds of science-fiction and fantasy books he collected over the years. And even when he played games, Lupo says he chose single-player titles like "The Sims."</p><p>"He always kind of watched from afar," Lupo said. "He didn't like fast-paced stuff because his brain just wasn't wired that way; gaming was never a thing for him when he was younger."</p><p>Lupo said his father grew to appreciate games, though, especially in his later years and as his son pursued a career on Twitch. On one occasion, Lupo, his father, and a handful of family members all played a game called "Starbound" together - and his father had a blast. "I stood up a server and we all had fun playing it," Lupo said. "It took my dad until he was in his 60s to ever play something with us like that. It was silly and fun, and I do desperately miss that."</p><p>The elder Lupo didn't understand Twitch at first, but gradually came to appreciate it when he saw how many people were watching his son play games like "Fortnite."&#xa0;The day before James passed away, Lupo called his father from a Target store and told him that he'd planned on streaming a phone game that weekend. "Where was this when I was your age?" Lupo's father asked him over the phone. "How did you get so lucky?"</p><p>"I could tell he was super proud of me, and that meant a lot," Lupo said. "There's a big portion of my career where I would've loved to hear what his thoughts about it were."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>In 2007, Lupo was heading over to his friend's duplex to watch a movie: the Star Trek film "The Wrath of Khan," but the Rifftrax version, where audio commentary (from the people who made "Mystery Science Theatre 3000") is played over the movie for comedic effect.<p>When Lupo arrived at the duplex, though, he spotted a woman outside yelling at her car because it wouldn't start.</p><p>This was Samantha.</p><p>One brief meeting and 11 years later, Samantha and Ben are happily married - for eight years now, since 2010.</p><p>"We still make the same jokes, still act the same way, we're still the same people, and I'd be frustrated actually if that ever changed," he said. "Being married to my best friend is still being married to my best friend. But now, she gets to watch the stream, and she's part of the business."</p><p>In addition to her work as a photographer, Samantha also manages Lupo's Twitch channel, fielding inquiries and overseeing the entire "DrLupo" operation. The two also have a son together: three-year-old Charlie.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Charlie has already appeared on Lupo's Twitch stream numerous times, as a cameo and an occasional participant in games like "Fortnite," and Lupo says he's excited to get his son more into video games when he's old enough to appreciate them.<p>"I'm making him play through my generations," Lupo said. "If you stick a kid in front of all of these super-high resolution games with tons of polygons - put him front of 'Fortnite' - he won't appreciate back when it was 8-bit, and all the audio was done on MIDI. It sounded like butt but it was what we had, and we appreciated it! I want him to have an appreciation for the history of how I got to where I am now. He'll play Nintendo's entire lineup before he starts getting too crazy."</p><p>He also said he would have no qualms about Charlie getting into game-streaming - the Lupo family business, perhaps - if that's what his son wanted to do when he's old enough.</p><p>"If he was serious about it, what is there to warn him against? If he's not an idiot, it's easy," Lupo said. "If he's serious about it, and wanted to give it a try once he was of age, and he actually had intent to do it and do something positive with it, then it would be ridiculous of me to say no. Because why would you say no? <p>The government cares a lot about its money, especially when it can be converted into Bitcoin, the digital anonymous currency, and taken off the radar to be sent anywhere without anyone's identity attached to it.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/is-bitcoin-legal-2013-4">The Feds are still figuring out</a> how to address Bitcoin. In the meantime, many marketplaces legitimate and illegitimate alike will gladly take the currency as payment for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoinshop-us-2013-9">everything from socks</a> to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/silk-road-2-2013-11">drugs</a>.</p>
<h2>2. Commercial drones</h2>
<p>Commercial drone use was catapulted to the public's attention with Amazon's surprising announcement that it's been experimenting with package delivery by unmanned aerial vehicle.</p>
<p>But here's the thing - there's no legal framework in the United States for businesses to make use of drones with the government's blessing. The FAA is on record as saying that it will be drawing up rules for such use cases, and when that happens, it'll shake up a number of industries. Obviously the aforementioned package deliveries can be handled much more swiftly and cheaply when there's not a human responsible for getting it to your door, but farmers can use them to dust crops, and companies in Australia are even using them to put out bush fires.</p>
<p>Commercial drone use faces two major hurdles before it becomes part of our lives - winning the public's favor as a safe and easy way to get business done, and figuring out where it fits within FAA regulations.</p>
<h2>3. 3D printing</h2>
<p>Many were raising a stink late last year (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/3d-printer-guns-morality-2012-11">I was one of them</a>) about Defense Distributed, a nonprofit organization committed to designing a functioning gun that one could hypothetically make at home with a 3D printer. It presents something of a problem to lawmakers - how do you make sure guns are being used safely when they can be manufactured in someone's garage without serial numbers or accountability? The city of Philadelphia <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/i-3d-printed-an-ar-15-assault-rifle--and-it-shoots-great-2013-12">has already issued a ban</a> on 3D printed weapons, so look for this ban to become a trend.</p>
<p>But that's not the only legal implication of 3D printing. Given the ability to manifest pretty much any object you can conceive of, 3D printers also have copyright zealots up in arms about potential infringement. <a href="http://www.tested.com/art/makers/452866-how-home-3d-printers-are-disrupting-miniature-gaming/">The famous example here is found in Warhammer 40K</a>, a tabletop wargame played with small figures that are most certainly protected under intellectual property laws. But with a 3D scanner and printer, it becomes a cinch to clone your figures at a fraction of the price you'd pay to buy them at a store. Is this legal or illegal?</p>
<p>These are just three examples of how technology is outpacing the <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword>, and given the current rate at which people are churning out newer and better gadgets to expand our capabilities, lawmakers will continue to have to play catchup.</p>
