A well-marked low-pressure area over the <keyword id="19929177" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bay-of-Bengal" source="keywords">Bay of Bengal</keyword> intensified into a <keyword id="20074966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="depression" source="keywords">depression</keyword> on Tuesday morning as it rolled towards the eastern coast with the likelihood of turning into a severe cyclonic storm, the <keyword id="19933636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IMD" source="keywords">IMD</keyword> said. In its bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards, concentrated into a depression and lay centred at 730 km southeast of Paradip in <keyword id="19897145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Odisha" source="keywords">Odisha</keyword> and 770 km south-southeast of Sagar island in West Bengal around 5.30 am. The depression will further intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 23 and cross north Odisha and southern West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar in the early morning hours of October 25 as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph, it said. Advising fishermen not to venture into the sea from October 23 to 25, the IMD warned that wind speed is likely to reach 60 kilometre per hour (kmph) along and off Odisha-West Bengal coasts and gradually increase thereafter. The storm is likely to bring very heavy rainfall in southern West Bengal districts on October 24 and 25, the IMD said. The weather system will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy downpours at one or two places in the districts of South 24 Parganas, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur and Jhargram. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, Purulia and Bankura districts between October 24 and 25. A deep depression is a more intense stage of a low-pressure system and typically precedes the formation of a cyclonic storm, according to the IMD. The Odisha government has cancelled the leaves of all staff from October 23 to 25 in view of the <keyword id="20969929" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyclone" source="keywords">cyclone</keyword> forecast. In a letter to all the departments, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) DK Singh asked them to remain prepared to tackle the challenges of the impending calamity. As per that, its step-down unit "Ambuja will acquire 46.8 per cent shares of OCL from its current promoters and certain public shareholders", according to a joint statement. The acquisition will be fully funded through internal accruals, it added. The latest acquisition will add 16.6 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) capacity to Adani Cement, which operates through Ambuja Cements in the sector. In June this year, Adani announced the acquisition of Hyderabad-based Penna Cement at an enterprise value of ₹10,422 crore, which added 14 MTPA capacity to the country's second-largest manufacturer. "This timed acquisition marks another significant step forward in Ambuja Cements' accelerated growth journey, increasing <keyword id="21171283" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cement-capacity" source="keywords">cement capacity</keyword> by ~30 MTPA within two years of Ambuja's acquisition," said Karan Adani, Director of Ambuja Cements. By acquiring OCL, Ambuja is poised to reach 100 MTPA cement capacity in FY25, he said, adding, "The acquisition will help to expand Adani Cement's presence in core markets and improve its pan-India market share by 2 per cent." OCL has 5.6 MTPA clinker capacity and 8.5 MTPA cement capacity along with the statutory clearance to increase the clinker capacity by another 6.0 MTPA and cement capacity by another 8.1 MTPA. Addressing a press conference, Karnataka Labour Minister Santosh Lad said, "The Labour Department of Karnataka has decided to impose cess on every transaction on aggregator platforms like Zomato, Dunzo, Swiggy, Zepto, Ola and others such." "The money that will be collected will be used for the welfare fund for gig workers. We are not charging for products or goods that consumers purchase; they will be charged only on transport," he added. The state government has already drafted a bill to protect the rights of platform-based gig workers. As per the draft, the bill intends "to place obligations on the aggregators in relation to social security, occupational health and safety, and transparency." It provides a scope to establish a welfare board and create a welfare fund for the platform-based gig workers in the state. By definition, a gig worker is someone who works short-term or project-based jobs, often as an independent contractor or freelancer, instead of being employed by a single company. Gig workers are part of the gig economy and are often involved in the service sector. As of now, gig work, being a relatively new form of workforce, has no dedicated labour laws. However, some provisions of Indian labour law cover some parts of the gig workspace. The Employment Compensation Act, 1923, mandates that the employer pay compensation for accidents arising out of and in the course of employment. Sarfaraz Khan hits century in maiden Test, carrying India to 344 at lunch against New Zealand

Three international flights of Vistara airline that received <keyword id="19956757" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bomb-threats" source="keywords">bomb threats</keyword> turned out to be hoaxes while one of the aircrafts was diverted to Frankfurt as a precautionary measure, officials said on Saturday. In a statement, a Vistara spokesperson said the three flights operating out of Delhi received security threats on social media on Friday and as per protocol, all the relevant authorities were promptly alerted. The officials said the flights to London, Paris and Hong Kong from the national capital received bomb threats that later turned out to be hoaxes. "Vistara flight UK17 operating from Delhi to London was diverted to Frankfurt as a precautionary measure. The aircraft landed at <keyword id="20230399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Frankfurt-Airport" source="keywords">Frankfurt Airport</keyword> safely and we fully cooperated with the authorities to complete the necessary checks following which, the flight was cleared to conclude the journey," the spokesperson said. The flight later landed at London at around 1140 pm local time on Friday. The airline also said the flight UK21 operating from Delhi to Paris landed safely at the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. The aircraft was taken to the isolation bay for the mandatory security checks and then later cleared to resume operations. According to the airline, the flight UK161 operating from Delhi to Hong Kong landed safely at the Hong Kong International Airport and all security procedures were adhered to. Meanwhile, <keyword id="20002701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Akasa-Air" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Akasa Air" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Akasa Air">Akasa Air</keyword> on Saturday early morning said its flight QP 1366 scheduled to fly from Bengaluru to Mumbai on Friday received a security alert shortly before departure. "Hence as per safety and security procedures, all passengers had to be deplaned as the local authorities followed necessary procedures. We request your understanding as our team on ground did everything possible to reduce inconvenience," the airline said in a post on X. The flight with 189 passengers onboard landed safely at the airport at 1.20 am, an official said, adding that the plane was checked thoroughly but nothing suspicious was found. In the past few days, more than 40 flights operated by the Indian carriers have received bomb threats which later turned out to be hoaxes. The Civil Aviation Ministry plans to put in place strict norms to prevent incidents of hoax bomb threats to airlines, including placing the perpetrators in the no-fly list. Three Vistara flights receive bomb threats; one flight diverted to Frankfurt on Fri

According to an order issued by the Office of Special Relief Commissioner on October 21, schools in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Khurda, Nayagargh and Cuttack districts will remain closed. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted <keyword id="20301827" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="heavy-rainfall" source="keywords">heavy rainfall</keyword> in Odisha in the upcoming week as <keyword id="23553727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cyclone-Dana" source="keywords">Cyclone Dana</keyword> is expected landfall on October 24. "As you are aware, IMD, Bhubaneswar has predicted that a well-marked low-pressure area has been developed over east-central Bay of Bengal at 1130 hours IST of today, the 21st October 2024 which is very likely to move west- northwestwards and intensify into a depression by October 22 morning and into a cyclonic storm by October 23, over east central Bay of Bengal," the order stated. "Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards and reach northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24 morning. It is further very likely to cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island during night of 24th and early morning October 25th, as a severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph," it stated. "Under its impact, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Khordha, Nayagarh and Cuttack districts are likely to be affected with wind action as well as heavy rainfall," Office of Special Relief Commissioner said. "Keeping in view, the schools in the above districts from October 23rd to 25th, shall remain closed as a precautionary measure. It is, therefore, requested to please take necessary action in this regard under intimation to this Department," the Office of Special Relief Commissioner stated in the order. <ul><li>Several sports have been axed from the lineup for the <keyword id="23639445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Commonwealth-Games-2026" source="keywords">Commonwealth Games 2026</keyword>.</li><li>The axed sports include hockey, badminton, wrestling, cricket and shooting.</li><li><keyword id="20499720" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Glasgow" source="keywords">Glasgow</keyword> has revealed a reduced roster of only ten disciplines to maintain the event's financial viability.</li></ul>In a significant setback to India's medal aspirations at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, crucial sports like hockey, badminton, wrestling, cricket, and shooting have been excluded from the 2026 edition by the host city, Glasgow. The host city has revealed a reduced roster of only ten disciplines to maintain the event's financial viability. Table tennis, squash and triathlon have also been axed in a bid to limit the cost and streamline logistics given that only four venues will host the entire showpiece. The total number of events at the Games will be nine fewer compared to the 2022 Birmingham edition. The 23rd edition of the mega-event is scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, marking Glasgow's return as host after 12 years, following the 2014 edition. "The sports programme will include Athletics and Para Athletics (Track &amp; Field), Swimming and Para Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling and Para Track Cycling, Netball, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Boxing, Judo, Bowls and Para Bowls, and 3x3 Basketball and 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball," the Commonwealth Games Federation said in a statement. "The Games will take place across four venues – Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena – including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). Athletes and support staff will be housed in hotel accommodation," it added. The roster is a massive setback to India's medal prospects given that bulk of the country's medals came from the removed disciplines in the past editions. Shooting was never expected to return after being dropped from the Birmingham programme four years ago, owing to logistics. While announcing the Glasgow schedule, the CGF said "Glasgow 2026 will feature a 10-sport programme concentrated across four venues within an eight-mile corridor". This ruled shooting out of the roster as the Barry Buddon centre in Dundee – the venue during the 2014 CWG – is more than 100km away from Glasgow. Glasgow Green and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, which hosted hockey and wrestling in 2014, have been dropped from the list of venues, while Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, where badminton was held that year, will be used only for cycling this time. Aside from the cost, hockey's exclusion could also be down to the fact that the Games are being organised close to the World Cup that is scheduled two weeks later from August 15 to 30 in Wavre, Belgium and Amstelveen, Netherlands The Australian state of Victoria was the original host of the 2026 edition but pulled out last year due to rising costs. Scotland then stepped in to save the Games. Hockey's omission from the Games would be a significant blow for India. The men's team has won three silver and two bronze medals, while the women have also shone, clinching three medals, including a historic gold in the 2002 Games. In badminton, India has racked up an impressive 31 medals – 10 gold, eight silver, and 13 bronze. Notably, the nation was to enter the 2026 edition as defending champions in men's and women's singles, as well as men's doubles. Shooting was a stronghold for India, with a staggering 135 medals to its name. The count included 63 gold, 44 silver, and 28 bronze. The wrestling competition has yielded 114 medals for the nation, including 49 gold, 39 silver, and 26 bronzes. After the cricket's reintroduction in 2022, the Indian women's team claimed a silver. India's CWG medal hopes dented: Cricket, shooting, wrestling axed

<keyword id="20069374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-services" source="keywords">IT services</keyword> firm <keyword id="19924892" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tech-Mahindra" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tech Mahindra" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Tech Mahindra">Tech Mahindra</keyword> on Saturday reported a more than two-fold jump in its consolidated <keyword id="19942166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-profit" source="keywords">net profit</keyword> to Rs 1,250 crore for the July-September quarter, driven by special income from the sale of assets. The Mahindra Group company posted a net profit of Rs 493.9 crore in the year-ago period, according to an exchange filing. Revenue rose by 3.49 per cent to Rs 13,313.2 crore in the second quarter of 2024-25 compared to Rs 12,863.9 crore in the same quarter of 2023-24. "Other income includes gain on sale of property of Rs 4,502 million which comprises of freehold land and its related buildings along with the furniture &amp; fixtures sold for a consideration of Rs 5,350 million, receivable over a period of four years along with interest of 8.2 per cent p.a," the company filing said. Sequentially, net profit rose by 46.81 per cent and revenue by 2.36 per cent. "We continue to progress on our strategic improvement efforts even as the overall IT services industry has remained soft. "We have focused on strengthening client relationships and expanding the partner ecosystem while maintaining a sharp focus on operational excellence through project Fortius, which has resulted in an expansion of margins for the third sequential quarter," Tech Mahindra CEO Mohit Joshi said. The CEO unveiled Project Fortius in April, a three-year plan to achieve a 15 per cent operating margin with a focus on organic growth. "This quarter we see consistent performance around increasing deal wins, <keyword id="19965932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-growth" source="keywords">revenue growth</keyword>, cost optimisation and steady free cash flow generation as we continue our journey towards FY27 stated targets. In line with our capital allocation policy the board has declared an interim dividend of Rs 15 per share," Tech Mahindra CFO Rohit Anand said. The company's TCV (<keyword id="23580531" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Total-Contract-Value" source="keywords">Total Contract Value</keyword>), or net new deal wins, stood at USD 603 million in the second quarter of FY25. Joshi further said the company is on the right path for a long-term sustainable transformation, with its leading indicators moving in the right direction, and its 'Scale at Speed' narrative resonating in the market. "We have invested in strengthening the capabilities in the focus service lines by broadening the leadership and investing in technical specializations. "We continue to invest in strengthening our fresher hiring program, building the right mindset and future skilling and associates, by building capabilities in AI-first and cloud-first skill sets," he told reporters. Investments shall continue in creating and sustaining an outcome-driven learning organisation and cultivating a high-performance culture based on the pillars of simplifying, clarifying, innovating and driving a high-performance orientation, he added. This year could be volatile because we are in the turnaround phase, Joshi said. "I am confident, however, that the platform is being set for a long-term, valuable franchise thanks to a high-calibre and united leadership team and a clearly articulated strategic plan," Joshi said. The Pune-headquartered firm added 6,653 employees during the quarter under review, bringing the total staff count to 1,54,273. Shares of Tech Mahindra settled at Rs 1,688 apiece on the BSE on Friday, down 0.68 per cent from the previous close. Victims are then asked to share their Aadhaar number, PAN, or other personal details via a fraudulent link or over a call. In some cases, they also ask users to complete the process through UPI apps, stealing money from their accounts during the process.
