<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warning: There are massive spoilers ahead for "<keyword id="6631414" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Wonder-Woman-1984">Wonder Woman 1984</keyword>."</li><li><keyword id="483361" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chris-Pine">Chris Pine</keyword> reprises his role as Steve Trevor in the "Wonder Woman" sequel.</li><li>Since trailers for the film dropped, fans have been wondering how the character could return since he was apparently killed in the first installment.</li><li>Still, the sequel uses a clever device to bring Trevor back to help Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) receive closure and move forward.</li></ul><p>When "<a href="http://insider.com/category/wonder-woman-1984">Wonder Woman 1984</a>" trailers teased the return of Diana Prince's first love Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), fans were massively confused. </p><p>How is this possible when Steve sacrificed himself at the end of the first <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword>, set during World War I? And how can Steve still look exactly the same even though 66 years have transpired since the first film?</p><p>Now that "WW84" is in theaters and available to stream on HBO Max domestically, fans have both of those questions answered.</p><p>Director Patty Jenkins told fans at 2019's Comic Con Experience in Brazil that Trevor's return <a href="https://collider.com/how-is-chris-pine-steve-trevor-back-in-wonder-woman-1984/">wouldn't be a gimmick </a>and it seems she's kept her word.</p><h2><strong>Steve Trevor returns in 'WW84' after Diana Prince wishes him into reality using a magic stone</strong></h2><div type="image" title="ww84 chris pine gal gadot steve trevor diana prince" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79956864" hostid="261"></div><p>Wait, really? Yup. That's the big secret.</p><p>Early in the film, a mysterious, but seemingly harmless artifact gets dropped off at the Smithsonian Institute to be inspected by Dr. Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig). </p><p>Diana Prince also happens to work at the Smithsonian as an expert in cultural anthropology and archaeology. The two women look over the mystery three-pronged gemstone that's held in a circular base. Minerva quickly deduces that it's made of citrine, a variety of quartz that's used in fakes throughout history. </p><p>While Minerva initially dismisses its importance - saying it's probably worth nothing more than $75 - Diana notices a Latin inscription on it that tells its beholder they can grant one wish. <a href="https://bleedingcool.com/movies/the-5-biggest-spoilers-from-the-wonder-woman-1984-junior-novelization/"></a></p><p>Overhearing the two, a coworker jokingly touches the stone, wishes for coffee, and the stone glows. When he coincidentally gets one almost immediately, Barbara and Diana joke over what they would use their one wish on. Diana says she knows exactly what she would wish for. </p><p>Without knowing that the stone actually grants anyone who touches it a wish, Diana silently wishes for the return of her former love, Steve Trevor. It's clear from the film's start that while Diana has adjusted well to life after Steve's death, at the end of the day, she still misses her first love. </p><p>Steve reappears into the film about 45 minutes into the sequel, except it's not exactly Steve as we remember him.</p><h2><strong>Steve is brought back in some random man's body</strong></h2><div type="image" title="wonder woman 1984 dc steve trevor diana prince" height="1196" width="1595" msid="79956865" hostid="261"></div><p>While at a party, a man calls out to Diana. While she tries to brush him off, the man recites some of the last things Steve ever said to her moments before he flew to his death in 2017's "Wonder Woman."</p><p>Diana then realizes this is Steve. Although he doesn't look like Steve - the audience can initially see he's clearly another man - he has the consciousness and memories of her former flame.</p><p>Diana tells "Steve" that all she sees is the love of her life and we, the audience, also see the random man as Steve for the duration of the film. Everyone else, however, is likely seeing the man as his actual self.</p><h2><strong>Wait. So what's the deal with this magic gemstone? It's a twist on the monkey paw.</strong></h2><p>Pedro Pascal's character, Max Lord, refers to the stone as "the Dreamstone," which seems like an apt name since it grants wishes.</p><p>Later in the film, Barbara is trying to learn more about the stone. If you pause the film at the right moment, a description on screen tells you the Latin inscription on the stone reads, "Anulo imposito magnum desideri es um invoca." The direct translation is, "On this ring held, cast but one great wish."</p><p>We then learn the stone was brought into existence by someone Diana conveniently refers to as the "God of Lies."</p><p>The Dreamstone is a twist on "<a href="https://americanliterature.com/author/w-w-jacobs/short-story/the-monkeys-paw">The Monkey's Paw</a>," the cautionary short story of receiving three wishes, but receiving consequences for each one as a result.</p><h2><strong>The sequel handled Steve's return pretty perfectly. It had the opportunity to trick the viewer and, instead, was upfront with fans from the start</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="ww84 wonder woman steve trevor" height="1402" width="2500" msid="79956866" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>If you were following the film's production closely, some of the major plot points for the sequel <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/DCEUleaks/comments/c1rr00/plot_and_character_details_for_wonder_woman_1984/">leaked over a year ago from test screenings</a>, including the idea of Steve reappearing in the film because of a granted wish.</p><p>My fear heading into "Wonder Woman 1984" was that Diana would see Steve return, but she would have no idea that he wasn't real. In turn, I feared that the audience would also believe Steve was really back only to have him ripped away at the film's end all over again and feel tricked.</p><p>Instead, I was shocked the sequel was respectful enough of its audience to let the viewer in on what they were doing with Steve right away. Both "Steve" and Diana had a conversation about how it was possible for him to be back and spent time trying to figure out how and why he was in another man's body. And because viewers were clued in pretty early that Steve wasn't going to be sticking around forever, it gave fans realistic expectations for the film's end.</p><p>Anyone who has ever grieved the loss of a loved one could imagine how difficult it would be to possibly learn that that individual was alive again only to later discover they never existed. It would be inextricably painful to mourn that loss all over again. </p><div type="image" title="ww84 steve diana" height="1177" width="2355" msid="79956867" hostid="261"></div><p>When the 2017 film was released, I wrote about how "Wonder Woman" had the guts to do something no Marvel movie did in <a href="https://www.insider.com/wonder-woman-ending-discussed-2017-6">killing its protagonist's love interest</a>. </p><p>At the time, I wasn't convinced the studio would allow Steve to be killed from the series because of the effortless chemistry Gadot and Pine shared on screen and because Steve is a pretty large character in the comics.</p><p>Also, superheroes are usually (at least partially) defined by their romantic interests. Where would Superman be without Lois Lane or Spidey without Mary Jane Watson?</p><p>But instead of using Pine as a crutch, "WW84" used him to help bring Diana some proper closure from his loss. Instead of trying to keep Steve around for a third "Wonder Woman" entry, "Steve" acknowledged it wasn't the right thing to do and that even Diana knew their time together was limited. </p><p>His reappearance in the sequel allowed her to find peace, continue to expand her powers (She can fly now? And turn things invisible? Sure!), and move forward without feeling like an outright gimmick.</p>

We finally know how 'Wonder Woman 1984' was able to bring back fan-favorite Chris Pine and the sequel handled it perfectly

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="6631414" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Wonder-Woman-1984">Wonder Woman 1984</keyword>" will now be released on December 25 simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.</li><li>The sequel will be available to all HBO Max subscribers at no additional cost for a month.</li><li>"It wasn't an easy decision and we never thought we'd have to hold onto the release for such a long time, but COVID rocked all of our worlds," star Gal Gadot wrote on Instagram.</li></ul><p>In an unexpected move, <keyword id="14846" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Warner-Bros-">Warner Bros.</keyword> announced on Wednesday that "<keyword id="30729" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Wonder-woman">Wonder Woman</keyword> 1984" will be released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on December 25.</p><p>It will debut theatrically on December 16 in international markets.</p><p>The film, starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, will be released at no extra cost to HBO Max subscribers for a month, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar said in a release sent to Insider.</p><p>"We are, of course, in an extraordinary moment," Kilar said in a statement. "We see an opportunity to do something firmly focused on the fans: give them the power to choose between going to their local cinema or opening on HBO Max. Super-fans will likely choose both. This incredible <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword> will be available both ways in the US on the exact same day."</p><p>The sequel, which follows Wonder Woman as she faces off against two new villains — Max Lord (Pedro Pascal) and The Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) — has been delayed multiple times since its initial June 2020 release date.</p><p>Kilar said the decision to release the film simultaneously on streaming and in theaters has several benefits, one of which is to provide fans with a choice in how to consume the film while providing exhibitors with an anticipated movie "at a much-needed time."</p><p>Director Patty Jenkins and Gadot addressed the announcement on social media. </p><p>"At some point you have to choose to share any love and joy you have to give, over everything else," <a href="https://twitter.com/PattyJenks/status/1329211121790664704?s=20">Jenkins wrote in a statement on Twitter</a>. "We love our movie as we love our fans, so we truly hope that our film brings a little bit of joy and reprieve to all of you this holiday season."</p><p>Jenkins encouraged fans to see the film in theaters where it may be safe to do so, but to otherwise watch it from "the safety of your home." </p><p>Gadot released a message to her fans on Instagram along with a photo of herself in the sequel to the 2017 movie. </p><p>"It wasn't an easy decision and we never thought we'd have to hold onto the release for such a long time, but COVID rocked all of our worlds," wrote Gadot. "We feel the movie has never been so relevant and we hope that it'll bring some joy, hope, and love to your hearts. 'Wonder Woman 1984' is a special one for me and I can only hope it'll be as special to you too. We've put our hearts and souls into it."</p><p>Fans first spotted a new trailer, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-m2vgoQjIc&amp;ab_channel=WarnerBros.Picturesures">which was quickly set to private</a>, announcing the HBO Max release on Wednesday.</p><p>The first movie was a big hit for WB, crossing more than $822 million worldwide at the box office. "WW84" was a highly-anticipated sequel that likely would have been one of the studio's biggest hits in 2020.</p><p>"We appreciate how patient audiences have been and given the great anticipation around 'Wonder Woman 1984' we are grateful to be able to make this terrifically entertaining movie widely available in these challenging times," said the chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, Toby Emmerich, in a statement. </p><p>Warner Bros. has since released a new trailer with the release announcement.</p><p>"WW84's" streaming release date on HBO Max now gives Disney Plus some competition. In October, Disney announced it was moving its next Pixar movie, "Soul," <a href="https://www.insider.com/pixar-soul-disney-plus-debut-skip-theaters-2020-10">to streaming on December 25</a>. It will not be released in theaters. </p>

'Wonder Woman 1984' will be released in theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on December 25

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="14846" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Warner-Bros-">Warner Bros.</keyword> is releasing all 17 of its 2021 movies simultaneously on <keyword id="7849400" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="HBO-Max">HBO Max</keyword> and in theaters.</li><li>"I don't think it makes sense for WarnerMedia," <keyword id="107172" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Imax">IMAX</keyword> CEO Richard Gelfond told Insider of his reaction to the December 3 news.</li><li>He added that he believes the movies won't perform as well at the box office when released at the same time.</li><li>Gelfond told Insider he and others knew the studio was considering the same date release option, an idea he responded to negatively. </li><li>He was under the impression WB nixed the idea, opting to only release "WW84" simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max.</li><li>Gelfond was surprised to learn the studio reversed course by sending its 2021 movies to streaming.</li><li>He expects to see the box office come around by next summer, which could play a factor in WB potentially reversing course.</li><li>"When other films open like 'Black Widow' in May and if they do really big box offices, I think that could be one of many factors that would cause Warner to reconsider," Gelfond said.</li></ul><p>Warner Bros. announced earlier this month that it will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/warner-bros-movie-2021-debut-hbo-max-theaters-same-day-2020-12">release its entire slate of 2021 movies simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max</a>.</p><p>Though WB has been adamant this decision was made as a one-year move due to the pandemic, the news sent shockwaves through Hollywood. Is this really temporary? What does this mean for creators and theaters? And what about the box office?</p><p>"I just don't think it makes a lot of sense. I don't think it makes sense for WarnerMedia," IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told Insider when asked his thoughts on WB's decision to send 17 film titles straight to its streaming service for a one-month run the same day they're released in theaters.</p><p>"I don't think they're going to maximize the profit on the <keyword id="6356021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movie">movie</keyword>," Gelfond continued. "I don't think it makes sense for exhibition because the movies aren't going to perform as well on day and date releases. It doesn't make sense for IMAX because we're in the blockbuster business, and, by way of reference, 'Wonder Woman [1984]' was filmed in part with IMAX cameras. I thought it was important that that be seen by audiences in IMAX."</p><h2><strong>Gelfond knew Warner Bros. was considering sending more movies to HBO Max apart from '<keyword id="6631414" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Wonder-Woman-1984">Wonder Woman 1984</keyword>,' but he was surprised when they actually moved forward with the decision.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Wonder Woman 1984 Warner Bros" height="2160" width="3840" msid="79746200" hostid="261"></div><p>WB's December 3 announcement to move its 2021 slate came about two weeks after the studio decided to send its highly-anticipated "Wonder Woman" sequel <a href="https://www.insider.com/wonder-woman-1984-hbo-max-theater-release-same-day-2020-11">to HBO Max in addition to theaters on December 25</a>.</p><p>Gelfond told Insider he knew WB was considering sending its 2021 releases to streaming in addition to theaters before the "Wonder Woman: 1984" announcement in late November, but he didn't think they would go through with it.</p><p>"I had been involved in discussions with Warner Bros. for a few months before that announcement and when they had first suggested it to me, I reacted in a very strong negative way because partly... I believe that the box office is going to open up around April," Gelfond said. "And I think it's going to be very strong by the summer." </p><p>Gelfond pointed to the success of <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/11/20/op-ed-will-audiences-return-to-the-movies-they-already-have.html">China and Japan's box offices returning to normal</a>, even with capacity restrictions, in the past few months, saying there's a pent-up demand for the theatrical experience.</p><p>"I understood it during the pandemic, but I didn't understand it in a year," Gelfond added, saying that after discussions with him and others he didn't name that WB agreed to only move forward with sending "WW84" to streaming.</p><p>"I thought that was a measured, appropriate response and I told them that I would support it and I understood it," Gelfond said. "Then, even before 'Wonder Woman' opening, they pivoted. They went back to this one year approach without, as far as I could tell, consulting anyone."</p><p>Many were caught off guard by the announcement, including Gelfond.</p><p>In response, <a href="https://deadline.com/2020/12/amc-responds-to-hbo-max-warner-bros-theatrical-model-2021-suicide-squad-matrix-4-dune-1234650125/">AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron</a> and the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sources-directors-guild-rebukes-warner-bros-in-sharply-worded-letter-criticizing-streaming-plan?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=THR%20Breaking%20News&amp;utm_term=hollywoodreporter_breakingnewsbreakingnews">Directors Guild of America</a> criticized WB's decision. Long-time WB collaborator Christopher Nolan, whose 2020 film "Tenet" was released in theaters, told <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">Entertainment</keyword> Tonight the move was a "bait and switch" where talented stars were being used a "<a href="https://www.etonline.com/christopher-nolan-reflects-on-tenet-release-reacts-to-warner-broshbo-max-deal-exclusive-157414">a loss-leader for the streaming service.</a>" </p><p>"Dune" director Denis Villeneuve, whose WB film is among the titles going to HBO Max next year, <a href="https://variety.com/2020/film/news/dune-denis-villeneuve-blasts-warner-bros-1234851270/">wrote an impassioned essay in Variety</a> describing his disappointment with WB, his fears of piracy, and how the move to streaming may have killed hope for a franchise.</p><h2><strong>Although IMAX is winning in the short-term, </strong><strong>Gelfond said he hopes Warner Bros. "reassess" its strategy for 2021.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="wonder woman 1984 gal gadot suit" height="1192" width="2508" msid="79746208" hostid="261"></div><p>It's not just filmmakers and exhibitors who are losing out. While US audiences will gain the benefit of watching the film from the comfort and safety of their homes, they'll miss out on one key theater experience. </p><p>Though "WW84" will stream in 4K and will support Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision on HBO Max, US fans likely won't see scenes that were filmed in IMAX in the way they were intended to be seen on the big screen when watching from home. In other words, don't expect to see scenes filmed in IMAX in the correct IMAX ratio on your TV. </p><p>Gelfond told Insider they have the technical capability of doing that, but they haven't set that up with HBO Max. He would be surprised if fans were able to see those scenes in the correct way.</p><p>One of the few winners with the "WW84" dual release, in the short-term, is IMAX. The company operates in 82 countries, many of which will play "Wonder Woman: 1984" in theaters where HBO Max isn't available. Currently, HBO Max is <a href="https://help.hbomax.com/Answer/Detail/29">available only in the US and some US territories</a>. It won't roll out in Europe and Latin American countries <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/web-summit-hbo-max-to-expand-into-latin-america-and-europe-by-the-second-half-of-2021-301185785.html">until the second half of 2021</a>.</p><p>"Even though there was a slight benefit for us, long-term I don't think that's how filmmakers and talent want to make movies," Gelfond said of WB's theatrical rollout. "And I don't think that's how audiences want to see them. I think there's still time for Warner to reassess and I hope they do."</p><h2><strong>Warner Bros. could reverse course i</strong><strong>f the box office takes off from rival studios and if we reach herd immunity, but the science says we may not get there until the end of 2021.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="black widow" height="791" width="1420" msid="79746209" hostid="261"></div><p>All eyes were on Disney last week to see if the Mouse would break the theatrical window after WB's surprise decision.</p><p>But during its recent 2020 investor's day, <a href="http://insider.com/category/disney">Disney</a> didn't send its 2021 films straight to its streaming service, <a href="http://insider.com/category/disney-plus">Disney Plus</a>. Instead, the company showed off a robust slate of original movies and TV shows for the streamer in addition to films that will head to theaters. </p><p>The company's next Marvel movie, "Black Widow," was on people's minds as many waited to see if the studio would send it to Disney Plus the same day as its May 7, 2021 theatrical release for a premium price. It didn't happen. Currently, "Black Widow" is only scheduled for a theatrical release.</p><p>Instead, Disney shifted one of its theatrical releases to same day streaming. Its next animated feature, "Raya and the Last Dragon," will be available for Disney Plus subscribers to unlock on March 5 - the same day it's released in theaters - at a yet-to-be-announced premium price. </p><p>After several months of delays, Disney previously made its live-action "Mulan" available to Disney Plus subscribers in September in a similar fashion. Those who paid a $29.99 premium could access the movie two months ahead of a December 4 release to all Disney Plus subscribers at no added cost. </p><div type="image" title="raya and the last dragon" height="1047" width="2500" msid="79746210" hostid="261"></div>Disney's decision to still lead 2021's summer with "Black Widow" shows a confidence that the box office could return to normal at some point next spring or summer.<p>Gelfond said a theatrical hit could make WB reconsider its 2021 decision.</p><p>"When other films open like 'Black Widow' in May and if they do really big box offices, I think that could be one of many factors that would cause Warner to reconsider because [they'd be] leaving that much money on the table," he said.</p><p>"They're smart business people," Gelfond added. "I would think they would think twice about it."</p><p>But in order for movies to make big numbers again, theaters would need to reopen at <a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-announces-most-movie-theaters-outside-new-york-city-can-reopen-october-23">more than 25% capacity</a> and people would need to feel safe to return to theaters, something, Gelfond believes will heavily depend on vaccine herd immunity.</p><p>And that could take awhile.</p><p>As of Friday, the first coronavirus vaccine <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fda-authorizes-pfizer-biontech-coronavirus-vaccine-for-us-emergency-use-2020-12">was approved for emergency use in the US</a>. While the two-dose vaccine, developed by Pfizer and German biotech BioNTech, should begin rolling out to states in days - with the country <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moncef-slaoui-100-million-americans-vaccinated-by-march-2021-2020-12">aiming to vaccinate 100 million people by March</a> - it won't be readily available to everyone right away.</p><p>Healthcare workers, frontline workers, people over 65, and people with preexisting conditions <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-can-i-get-a-coronavirus-vaccine-timeline-2020-11">will have first priority to get the vaccine</a>. By late May, it's possible everyone in the US could have access to a vaccine, but it could still take <a href="https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2020/12/anthony-fauci-offers-a-timeline-for-ending-covid-19-pandemic">several months into the fall and winter 2021 to develop herd immunity</a>.</p><p>Dr. Anthony Fauci told the New York Times in November that if <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-can-i-get-a-coronavirus-vaccine-timeline-2020-11">we can get 75%-80% of the US population vaccinated over the second quarter of 2021</a> that we may have enough herd immunity where we can "approach very much <a href="https://youtu.be/VuelWuYyUPc?t=7207">some degree of normality</a> that is close to where we were before" by next year's end. </p><p>If we're not reaching a "degree of normality" until the end of 2021, as Fauci said, WB's call to release its films simultaneously in the US on HBO Max and theaters through the end of next year may not seem illogical after all.</p><p><em>A Warner Bros. representative did not immediately return Insider's request for comment.</em></p>

Trevor was Wonder Woman's love interest and a military spy during World War I in the first movie. An image released by Warner Bros. with Pine as Trevor is above.</p><p>Director Patty Jenkins also tweeted the photo on Wednesday with the caption, "Welcome to WONDER WOMAN 1984, Steve Trevor! #WW84."</p><p>Trevor died at the end of the first movie after sacrificing himself, and the sequel is set decades after the original, so it remains to be seen how the character will be brought back.</p><p>"Wonder Woman 1984" opens in theaters November 1, 2019. Diana Prince, who is living in Washington D.C., is spending her days secretly helping people who are in peril while longing for Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), her lost love.</p><p>Working at the Smithsonian, Diana befriends archaeologist Barbara Ann Minerva (Kristen Wiig), who is shy, lacks confidence, and is taken by Diana's confidence.</p><p>The plot kicks in quickly when a collection of artifacts that were being sold on the black market is bought in by the FBI. Barbara and Diana discover one in particular, which, according to the ancient writing on it, grants wishes. And that's when things go haywire.</p><p>Both women reveal their deepest wishes to the artifact - for Diana it's to see Steve again; for Barbara, it's to be like Diana - and before you know it Steve appears and Barbara is kicking butt.</p><p>Then the curve ball appears in the form of Max Lord (Pedro Pascal). A charismatic businessman who is part Gordon Gekko, part Donald Trump, who gets Barbara to let him borrow the artifact and then uses it to build an empire that is more powerful than the government. That leads to complete anarchy around the world.</p><p>Now it's time for Wonder Woman to choose: Saving humanity or staying with Steve.</p><div type="image" title="Wonder Woman 1984 Warner Bros" height="2160" width="2880" msid="79745211" hostid="261"></div><h2>Why you should watch: The movie has a strong, emotionally-charged story</h2><p>Jenkins not only directs the movie this time around but also came up with the story and wrote the screenplay. So the pressure was certainly on her to deliver, and she did. Not just with exciting action sequences, but with an emotional story.</p><p>All Diana wants in the world is to be rejoined with Steve, and to be honest, fans like me weren't through with watching those two together. So Jenkins came up with a clever way for them to be together one last time. In fact, a lot of "Wonder Woman 1984" is focused on the relationship between the two.</p><p>Now, that doesn't mean there isn't action. Wonder Woman is riding lightning with her lasso and her powers of invisibility are revealed. But as we know from the countless superhero <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> before this, you can't just have mindless action to draw in an audience.</p><p>The movie very much has a "Superman II" energy to it. The 1980 classic delved deep into the relationship between Superman (Christopher Reeve) and Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), including him eliminating his superpowers to profess his love for her.</p><p>But unlike "Superman II," the villains in "WW84" aren't just fantastic but relatable. Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) and General Zod (Terrence Stamp) are pure evil, and that's it. Max Lord and Barbara (who turns into the villain Cheetah) are layered so by the end we even have a soft spot for them as well.</p><p>Jenkins manages not to lean into the 1980s traps. Though set in a decade we love to go nuts about, there are pretty much zero needle drops of the music of the decade and outside of a fun montage, even the colorful fashion of the era isn't given an unnecessary focus.</p><div type="image" title="wonder woman 1984" height="771" width="1577" msid="79745214" hostid="261"></div><h2>The bottom line: The movie excites but also leaves you feeling good</h2><p>The movie has a two-and-a-half running time, so there's a lot of film here. But with that length, Jenkins is able to really delve into the characters and give each main character their time to shine. </p><p>DC Comics movies have received the knock for being too gritty. But Jenkins has shown with her contributions to the universe that she's going another direction. She knows the power of big blockbusters and is using it to push out positivity and inspiration. 'Wonder Woman 1984' delivers a double punch of romance and excitement

Her back is facing the audience, but we're made to believe it's Wonder Woman because of her dark, wavy hair.</p><p>The woman prevents a falling beam from hitting a baby in a stroller. The girl's mother calls out to her, asking to thank the stranger.</p><p>The woman turns around revealing she's not Diana Prince, but another Themysciran named Asteria.</p><p><strong><div type="image" title="lynda carter asteria" height="1159" width="2009" msid="79958988" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The mother compliments her name and Asteria shares that it's a name from her culture. When asked how she was able to save her daughter, Asteria says, "It's just a simple shift of weight. Takes practice. But I've been doing this a long time." </p><p>Asteria then winks at the camera and departs. The scene then ends, announcing <keyword id="369656" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Lynda-Carter">Lynda Carter</keyword>'s role as Asteria in the film.</p><h2><strong>Lynda Carter played the original Wonder Woman on TV</strong></h2><div type="image" title="wonder woman" height="3000" width="2036" msid="79956869" hostid="261"></div><p>Carter played the heroine for three seasons from 1975 through 1979. The series began on ABC before moving over to CBS for the final two seasons.</p><p>The actress recently recalled that her own daughter fell in love with Gadot's take on the iconic character at <keyword id="14846" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Warner-Bros-">Warner Bros.</keyword>' virtual DC Fandome event back in August.</p><p>"Mom, I finally get it. I finally understand why everyone idolizes you," <a href="https://www.looper.com/239062/the-message-that-original-wonder-woman-lynda-carter-had-for-gal-gadot/?utm_campaign=clip">she said, recalling their conversation.</a></p><p>It's pretty fitting that the film revealed Carter to be Asteria.</p><h2><strong>Asteria is the greatest warrior of the Amazons</strong></h2><div type="image" title="steve trevor diana prince ww84 wonder woman" height="1667" width="2500" msid="79956872" hostid="261"></div><p>Just in case you forgot, Diana (Gal Gadot) mentions Asteria earlier in the film to Steve. She tells him Asteria was the greatest warrior of the Amazons.</p><p>"When mankind enslaved the Amazons, my mother freed us," Diana told Steve. "But someone had to stay behind to hold back the tide of men so the others could escape." </p><p>That's where Asteria came into the picture. </p><p>"My people gave up all of their armor to make her one suit strong enough to take on the whole world," Diana added. "Asteria sacrificed herself for a better day for others."</p><p>Asteria allowed the Amazons to flee to Themyscira, an island that's only inhabited by women that's seen at the start of "Wonder Woman 1984." As Diana talks, we briefly see a flashback only showing Asteria's eyes as men surround her in her gold armor. </p><p>Diana tells Steve that she has searched for her since 1918, but she could only find her armor. She wears it at the film's end to go up against Barbara Minerva, who, at that point, has transformed into Wonder Woman's main foe, Cheetah.</p><h2><strong>Does this character ever show up in the comics? Yes, but it's a different character</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="asteria dc comics" height="807" width="1130" msid="79956873" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Asteria is mentioned twice in the DC Comics. </p><p>The film version doesn't appear to be connected at all to the comic iterations, but just to recount Asteria's first appearance is in 1998's "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NLK980Y/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1kr=1">Elseworld's Finest: Supergirl &amp; Batgirl</a>" issue No. 1 where she's a burgeoning member of the Justice Society superhero group in a parallel universe.</p><p>Asteria later appears in a 2018 one-off comic, "Aquaman/Justice League: Drowned Earth," as a bird that works alongside Wonder Woman.</p><p>In a <a href="https://www.dccomics.com/comics/justice-league-2018/justice-league-11">later "Justice League" issue</a>, Diana says she's named after one of her Amazon sisters who "fought against the Gods."</p><div type="image" title="wonder woman asteria" height="1342" width="2082" msid="79956874" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Don't get too excited. This cameo was likely just a fun moment for fans</strong></h2><p>This year marked the 80th anniversary of Wonder Woman in the comics. "But with the success of the film, that's when it started to represent so much more than I ever thought it would."</p><p>"Wonder Woman" made over $200 million its opening weekend at the box office (another first for a female director), and Jenkins' profile skyrocketed. Before that, she was known best as the director of the gritty indie "Monster," which was the vehicle that earned Charlize Theron her best actress Oscar. But thanks to the success of "Wonder Woman," Jenkins' celebrity status rose to the point where she was a <a href="http://time.com/time-person-of-the-year-2017-patty-jenkins-runner-up/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">runner-up for Time's Person of the Year</a> in 2017.</p><p>Jenkins said that since "Wonder Woman," she's learned that she's perceived as more than a filmmaker. She's an ambassador of the movement to bring more diversity to the stories being told in Hollywood. It's something she said she accepts, but is still trying to keep within the context of moviemaking. For instance, when she had to negotiate her contract with Warner Bros. for the "Wonder Woman" sequel, she knew she had to make a statement, she said.</p><p>Here's how she described it:</p><p style="padding-left: 40px;">"I think when it came to doing a contract I definitely felt a huge amount of responsibility to get at least equal pay with other men making movies that are successful on the same level. There's a quote system in Hollywood so people want to hold you to only incrementally making more. But certainly it has been shown that it's easier for men to get their movies made, so this is kind of statistically what holds women back in job progression in many places. If you can't continue to get little job after little job that builds up to that place, you cannot get equal pay. In this case, the movie was so successful that I said publicly, 'If not me, who?' I want to be getting paid a parallel to other people making really successful films like this. And so I felt that was an important point to hunker in on and was lucky to be supported in it."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>From Jenkins' vantage point, the industry is showing promise in supporting female-focused projects. Since the release of "Wonder Woman," we've finally seen a woman-led Marvel movie with "Captain Marvel," which earned <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=marvel2018a.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over $1 billion at the worldwide box office</a>. And Filmmaker Cathy Yan is currently in production on the big budget DC Comics movie "Birds of Prey," starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.</p><p>"I think the big difference is believing in that point of view being successful," Jenkins said of the industry about female-focused projects since "Wonder Woman" opened. "So the more people start looking for that kind of story to be developed from the start, that's when the big difference comes in."</p><p>And Jenkins is continuing to do her part. Though she admitted she's always been conscious of having her sets be gender and culturally diverse, with "Wonder Woman 1984," she believes the crew is more diverse than the first movie.</p><p><em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/introducing-the-100-people-transforming-business-2019-4"><strong>Read more</strong>: Business Insider's 100 people transforming business.</a></em></p><p>"It's a struggle when you're working at the studio in England to find a really diverse crew," Jenkins said of the first movie. "With this one, we filmed in so many different places - from Washington D.C. to Spain - it was very easy to find an incredibly diverse crew."</p><p>With the edit of "WW84" being the biggest thing on her mind, Jenkins said it's hard to be retrospective at this point. But you can tell she's aware how transformative her contribution has been.</p><p>"I can definitely sit back and see that there's been radical change from the time I signed on to do 'Wonder Woman' to now," she said.
