Volkswagen, the German car manufacturer, has found some solace in India despite being entangled in a global emission scandal. It has also become one of the quickest foreign auto makers to mop out its accumulated losses in India in just seven years, earlier than Ford Motor, General Motors and Honda Motors, which are yet to reach that point even after being in India for more than 15 years. 
 
As per experts, it was the German company’s early decision to export vehicles from India, allowing its factory to continue exporting cars despite weak local sales, which helped the company achieve this feat. Volkswagen got into exporting cars from India in 2013, just within three years of starting making cars in India. 
 "Exports are absolutely supporting this, the exchange rate is also in favour of exports," Andreas Lauermann, MD at <keyword id="159682" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Volkswagen-India">Volkswagen India</keyword>, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/auto/amid-global-woes-india-a-bright-spot-for-automaker-volkswagen/articleshow/52825673.cms">ET</a>. "Otherwise we can be running in losses." 
 
"We have increased our production over the last few years, mainly driven by exports, but now we are expanding the capacity from domestic market perspective," said Lauermann. 
 
India is among the brightest markets for Volkswagen, especially because the company has been marred by a global emission scandal regarding its diesel cars. Around the globe, its seeing a major downsizing, with factories in Argentina, Russia, Mexico and Brazil cutting down on shifts, which has also led to job losses.

India becomes profitable for Volkswagen is in the middle of a global emission scandal

New Delhi, Mar 18 () Volkswagen India on Wednesday said it has launched new SUV T-Roc in the country at an introductory price of Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The model comes with 1.5 litre petrol engine mated to a seven-speed DSG gearbox. The T-Roc embodies all the good qualities of a Volkswagen with its sporty design, functionality, safety, technology and dynamic driving experience, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India Director Steffen Knapp said in a statement. The SUV is a robust product and enhances the company's SUV portfolio in India, he added. The T-Roc comes with a five-star EURO NCAP rating for adult and child occupants. The model is equipped with six-airbags, anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system and reverse camera. Deliveries of the model will begin in mid-April 2020, the company said. Earlier this month, Volkswagen had introduced seven-seater SUV, Tiguan Allspace in the country. MSS ANSANS

In 2019, the company sold close to 368,000 vehicles worldwide, in the U.S. accounting for 78% of all electric car sales. But one company still makes a strong case for being a serious challenger to Tesla's crown: <keyword id="6361865" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="volkswagen">Volkswagen</keyword>. With a multi-billion dollar bet on electric mobility, VW's goal of manufacturing 28 million <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> by 2028 might seem wildly ambitious. But the legacy automaker has a plan set in place for taking control of the EV market - and it just might work.Just five years ago, Volkswagen found itself paying billions of dollars in fines for programming its diesel engines to cheat emissions tests. But as the dust still settles from its "Dieselgate" scandal, Volkswagen is now spending money on more than just repairing its reputation.Volkswagen Group is investing almost $37 billion into its electric car program, the most out of any manufacturer. Over $12 billion will be spent specifically at the company's Volkswagen brand. With this investment, Volkswagen's flagship marque has already projected to produce 1 million EVs annually by 2023. By 2025 they expect a total of 3 million amongst all of Volkswagen Group brands.While this sounds like overpromising from a group that sold only 140,000 plug-in cars last year, Volkswagen already has the tools and manpower at its disposal. The automaker recently converted its Zwickau, Germany plant to solely produce the all-electric Volkswagen ID.3 that will be released in Europe this summer. By 2021 that factory is projected to pump out 330,000 cars a year. EV production is then planned to spread to its Dresden, Germany factory, it's Tennessee plant, and two of its China factories. By 2022, Volkswagen Group will be producing electric vehicles at eight different factories on three different continents.But as impressive as these numbers are, they are still optimistic estimates based on Volkswagen's size and wallet. In terms of actual sales, Tesla still dominates the EV world. The question is, can they continue?First, let's put aside stocks. Tesla's recent valuation of over $100 billion is definitely jaw-dropping. The company even surpassed Volkswagen for the first time. But, Tesla sells a fraction of the cars Volkswagen does and generated only 10% of Volkswagen's revenue in 2019. In addition to its namesake brand, Volkswagen Group has a dozen other profitable product lines, as opposed to Tesla's one that's yet to record an annual profit.Still, what Tesla has accomplished with its limited resources deserves plenty of praise. Its sales last year were more than its previous two years combined. The company now projects to sell 500,000 cars in 2020, a 36% increase over last year. If its sales continue growing at that rate, they could be shipping over 2 million cars a year by 2025!But 2020 might not be so certain for Tesla. First of all, it's year-over-year U.S. numbers are already beginning to slow, with annual revenue down 14.9% from 2018. Fortunately, a number of European countries along with China helped pick up the slack, but the U.S. is still the company's biggest market. And as of January 1st this year, that oh so attractive $7,500 tax credit that comes with buying an electric car has fully expired for the company.In addition, American sales of the Model S and Model X are on a downward trend, and being outsold by luxury competitors in Europe. Now the industry is about to see an influx of potential rivals to the <keyword id="2423677" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="model-3">Model 3</keyword>, the cornerstone to Tesla's success. While Tesla is certainly vamping up it's production capacity, it could find itself having to depend on a declining Chinese auto market to continue its growth.Production wise, Tesla's Fremont factory is capable of pumping out nearly 500,000 cars a year. The now up and running Shanghai plant is said to have a capacity of 150,000 Model 3s and will begin <keyword id="4684024" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Model-y">Model Y</keyword> production mid-2020. But the development of its Berlin factory, a major component to its growth in Europe, has already been challenged by local environmentalists. Meanwhile, where the production of the Roadster, Cybertruck and Semi will happen remains unknown. Although this level of production is admirable for an independent company, can it keep up with a conglomerate already established on multiple continents?So we've heard the numbers, but what exactly can we expect to see on Volkswagen's showroom floors? Well, in addition to the luxury models already released through its Audi and Porsche lines, for mainstream buyers its Volkswagen brand has multiple options planned for the next few years, two being released as soon as 2020. This includes the ID.3 hatchback, exclusively available in Europe, and sold for around $30,000, and the ID Crozz planned for the U.S. in late 2020 and priced at around $40,000 before the $7,500 tax credit still available to Volkswagen EVs. The years to follow will include the ID Roomz SUV, the ID Buzz based on its iconic Microbus, and more!But Tesla has plans of its own to expand its limited lineup. Deliveries for its Model Y SUV begin as soon as this March. However, some analysts worry it could "cannibalize" sales of the already successful Model 3, which they believe is responsible for the drop in sales of the luxury-end Model S and Model X. The Model 3 and Y are similarly-priced, very similar looking, and it will eventually sell for over half the price of Tesla's only other SUV, the Model X. Tesla's upcoming Roadster supercar and Cybertruck pickup certainly have impressive potential, but the company may need a lower-priced entry level car to keep up with someone like Volkswagen who has the pockets to produce cheaper vehicles.Volkswagen's biggest challenge may be marketing. Tesla famously claims not to spend a dime on advertising, but has come to dominate the electric car market through YouTube, social media, with its unmistakable "cool factor".But Volkswagen knows it will have to reach its potential buyers somehow. The automaker is already putting the majority of its marketing efforts into the EV sector. This includes a $2 billion ad campaign promoting zero emissions vehicles. And it's clear other mainstream automakers are taking note. About 45% of all car commercials during this year's Super Bowl were for EVs. Even on a local level, the most difficult area to reach, Volkswagen will match funds for its dealerships' commercials and ad campaigns, supplying up to even 75% of the resources.But as the company's 2015 scandal remains fresh in the heads of many environmentalist car buyers, we'll have to see if America and the rest of the world is buying VW's reformed attitude toward greener cars.While it's fun to marvel at rivalries about to take place between brands like Volkswagen and Tesla, the status of the EV market is less exciting. Electric vehicles accounted for only 2.5% of all global car sales in 2019. These next few years will feature a huge increase in the number of EV models available to buyers, but we could just as easily see a scenario with automakers building a huge surplus of cars with no one to buy them. New Delhi, Mar 4 () Auto maker Volkswagen India on Thursday launched BS VI compliant versions of premium hatchback Polo and mid-sized sedan Vento, priced between Rs 5.82 and Rs 13.29 lakh (ex-showroom).The company has introduced the models with new range of petrol powertrains.The new Polo is powered by MPI and TSI petrol engines mated with both manual and automatic transmissions.The 1 litre MPI versions of the model are priced between Rs 5.82 lakh and Rs 7.8 lakh, while the 1 litre TSI engine trims are tagged at Rs 8.02 and Rs 9.59 lakh, respectively.On the other hand, Vento with manual transmission is priced between Rs 8.86 lakh and Rs 11.99 lakh, while the automatic trims are tagged at Rs 12.09 lakh and Rs 13.29 lakh."Volkswagen is always committed to bring in the best of technology for its customers in India, while being conscious about its carbon footprint," Volkswagen Passengers Cars Director Steffen Knapp said in a statement.In accordance to the Indian government norms, Volkswagen India announced a 100 per cent transformation to a BS VI product portfolio, he added."The carlines continue to be accessible for the Indian customers with no major price difference across the Polo and Vento carlines," Knapp said.Polo and Vento now come with heat insulating glass, which maintains the cabin temperature and thus lowering fuel consumption and enhancing customer comfort while driving, the company said. The company, which posted a whopping 125 percent year-on-year surge in its vehicle sales at 53,721 units in 2022, also sounded hopeful of growing into double-digit this year as well. Similarly, <keyword id="166267" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="volkswagen-group" source="Orion">Volkswagen Group</keyword> sales grew 85.48 per cent year-on-year at 1,01,270 units in the previous calendar year. "Now, we have both models (all-new Slavia sedan and <keyword id="10576650" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="kushaq-suv" source="Orion">Kushaq SUV</keyword>) in the market and can now enjoy having both models for the full year in the market," he said. Solc said that the 7-seater updated SUV Kodiaq will also play a role in terms of the company's growth strategy, particularly when there is a much greater supply now. To a question on Audi, which at a point of time was the undisputed leader in the domestic premium luxury car market, Christian Cahn Von Seelen, Member of the Board for sales, marketing and digital at SAVWPIL said that its growth has been "impressive" in terms of volume in 2022 compared to the year earlier and that was still hampered significantly by the chip supply situations even in Europe. "So the growth of Audi is impressive, and we are definitely planning to continue...So as much (as) I think, I can say we will see loads of new product introductions here on the other side." On the company's EV foray in the Indian market, Solc said it depends on the development of the segment in the country. Late last month, the European car maker Skoda announced its EV roadmap, which includes six electric cars in a phased manner by 2026. "We as a manufacturer and Skoda, we will be ready. And if we see good traction, we are talking about the prognosis that the car market or the EV can go within 5-10 years, up to 20, maybe 30 per cent. We don't know necessarily," he said. "So this could be part, we would like to be also within that range, but depends again, on the response. If we see more manufacturers going, there is an infrastructure built here and there's an acceptance from the customers to buy electric cars, and we will be ready," he said. He said that the company is discussing which models it should bring in the future also to India as an EV. "And if we see the potential in the market, we will bring them as well. So I cannot say necessarily what the percentage will be. But if the market is going towards more than 20 per cent of the electric vehicles of the total market, we would like to penetrate within the EV segment," Solc added. India to become export hub for Skoda Auto from next year, says co-official

New Delhi, Dec 13 () European auto major Volkswagen on Friday said it has partnered ORIX Auto Infrastructure Services for providing car leasing service in India.
 The partnership comprises retail leasing solution, which will offer a range of Volkswagen cars catering to start-up entrepreneurs, MSMEs, salaried individual and corporate professionals, the company said in a statement.
 The monthly lease rental for Volkswagen model range will start at Rs 17,647 and will be offered through the Corporate Business Centre (CBC) present in six metro cities -- Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, it said.
 Gradually, the program will be extended to other CBCs as well in the country, it added.
 The company is offering customers car leasing from a minimum period of two years to a maximum period of four years.
 "With our partnership with ORIX, our customers will have the convenience and flexibility to drive premium mobility at a value for money proposition through a monthly rental," Volkswagen Passenger Cars Director Steffen Knapp said.
 This will enhance financial independence for customers with shorter periods of asset holding and no upfront capital requirement, he added.
 ORIX Auto Infrastructure Services Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sandeep Gambhir said, "We believe this partnership between two leading global brands will fulfil many such dreams by enabling customers to experience Volkswagen premium products through our innovative and curated lease options which would now be available across Volkswagen's Corporate Business Centre (CBC)."
