Volkswagen, the German car manufacturer, has found some solace in India despite being entangled in a global emission scandal. It has also become one of the quickest foreign auto makers to mop out its accumulated losses in India in just seven years, earlier than Ford Motor, General Motors and Honda Motors, which are yet to reach that point even after being in India for more than 15 years. 
 
As per experts, it was the German company’s early decision to export vehicles from India, allowing its factory to continue exporting cars despite weak local sales, which helped the company achieve this feat. Volkswagen got into exporting cars from India in 2013, just within three years of starting making cars in India. 
 "Exports are absolutely supporting this, the exchange rate is also in favour of exports," Andreas Lauermann, MD at <keyword id="159682" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Volkswagen-India">Volkswagen India</keyword>, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/auto/amid-global-woes-india-a-bright-spot-for-automaker-volkswagen/articleshow/52825673.cms">ET</a>. "Otherwise we can be running in losses." 
 
"We have increased our production over the last few years, mainly driven by exports, but now we are expanding the capacity from domestic market perspective," said Lauermann. 
 
India is among the brightest markets for Volkswagen, especially because the company has been marred by a global emission scandal regarding its diesel cars. Around the globe, its seeing a major downsizing, with factories in Argentina, Russia, Mexico and Brazil cutting down on shifts, which has also led to job losses.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India on Tuesday said it will suspend production at its <keyword id="143605" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chakan-plant">Chakan plant</keyword> in Pune for a month from mid-December to mid-January in order to upgrade the facility for new range of products, according to sources. The company -- formerly known as Volkswagen India -- had earlier suspended production for a month from middle of October to mid-November. When contacted, the company spokesperson said it is taking the step to prepare for next generation of products within the INDIA 2.0 project. "Several upgrades are in progress at our facilities to accommodate changes in the production lines for MQB A0 IN platform. We are systematically planning our non-production days to sustainably meet our customer deliveries without any delay," the spokesperson said when asked about the suspension of work at the plant. While the spokesperson did not confirm the period of closure, industry sources confirmed the suspension of production from mid-December to align production in preparation of the new range of products. The Pune-headquartered company operates two production facilities in Pune and Aurangabad, and has regional offices in Mumbai, New Delhi and other locations across the country. In July 2018, the Volkswagen Group announced investments of around EUR 1 billion as part of the India 2.0 project. In January this year, the company opened a new technology centre in Pune to develop vehicles based on the localised MQB-A0-IN subcompact platform, tailored to the requirements of local customers. As part of fresh model introduction strategy in the country, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India plans to drive in a mid-size SUV model which would be sold from both Skoda and Volkswagen sales outlets.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen to suspend ops at Chakan plant for a month

New Delhi, May 13 () Automaker Volkswagen India on Wednesday said it has introduced a comprehensive programme to implement safety and sanitisation standards across its facilities amid coronavirus pandemic. Under the #VWellnessIndia programme, company's 137 sales and 116 service stations will be covered across the country, Volkswagen India said in a statement.Through the programme, the company aims to provide and maintain health, hygiene and sanitisation standards across its facilities, it added.It is aimed at ensuring employee safety and re-building customer confidence and providing peace of mind when a customer decides to visit a Volkswagen dealership or service workshop, the company said."At Volkswagen, safety is in our DNA, which isn't limited to our vehicles but also extends to human well-being. The #VWellnessIndia programme provides our network extensive details on sanitization and contactless measures that need to be implemented for business continuity," Volkswagen Passenger Cars India Director Steffen Knapp said.The company aims to offer customers complete peace of mind and a hassle-free experience while visiting a Volkswagen sales and service facility, he added.The company's measures include hygiene practices, timely sanitisation of the facility and vehicles, thermal scanning, safe distancing, wearing of masks and gloves, placement and usage of hand sanitizers.Besides, virtual training has been imparted across the network, including sales, service and administration teams, it added. Mumbai, Mar 6 () German auto major Volkswagen on Friday launched India-specific 7-seater Tiguan Allspace premium SUV in the domestic market priced at Rs 33.12 lakh (ex-showroom). The new offering from Volkswagen comes with a 2-lt BS-VI-compliant engine. The all-new Tiguan Allspace was showcased at the recently-held Auto Expo in Greater Noida along with other SUVs. The Allspace will compete against other SUVs in the segment including Skoda Kodiaq, Honda CR-V, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra's Alturas G4, among others. "The Tiguan Allspace is one of our most successful carlines globally and, we are extremely delighted to launch the car for our Indian customers. It is the first SUV that is being launched under Volkswagen's SUV offensive strategy and suits the needs of every Indian customer," Steffen Knapp, director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said here. In 2018, the VW Group had announced investments of around Rs 8,000 crore in India till 2021 under India 2.0 project, while giving Czech firm Skoda Auto the responsibility to take the lead to achieve a combined target of 5 per cent market share of the total domestic passenger vehicle segment by 2025. Of this, Volkswagen alone is looking to corner 3 per cent market share as against around 1 per cent at present. The company has merged its three Indian entities-Volkswagen India Pvt. Volkswagen launches Tiguan Allspace, priced at Rs 33.12 lakh in India

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mexico">Mexico</a> is around 12,000 nautical miles away from India but has bridged the distance and is set to become the biggest export market for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+car+industry">Indian carmakers</a> this fiscal. 
 
The Central American country gets one-fifth of all <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=car+exports">cars shipped out of India</a>, becoming the topmost overseas market for India-made cars this year, by importing about 1.3 lakh vehicles. 
 
As per reports, car exports to Mexico will go up by over 50% to 1.32 lakh units in 2015-16, as against 82,000 vehicles for the same period last year. 
 
Economic Times reported <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> alone is expected to ship more than 55,000 cars from India to Mexico and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=general+motors">General Motors</a> will export over 45,000 units of Beat small car, which is sold as Spark in that market. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hyundai">Hyundai</a>'s i10 Grand and Xcent, Ford's Figo and Figo Aspire, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=maruti">Maruti</a> Suzuki's Ciaz are among the other Indian cars headed for Mexico. 
 "Mexico is the most important and largest export market for <keyword id="159682" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Volkswagen-India">Volkswagen India</keyword>. In 2014, we shipped approximately 55,000 cars to Mexico. In 2015, we expect to ship slightly higher number to Mexico," one of the persons associated with the matter told ET. 
 
Despite freight cost plus import duty of 20%, the likes of Volkswagen India and General Motors India have allocated large batches of cars from the country to Mexico to gain from economies of scale and cost advantage in the country that is about 20%-30%. 
 
Gaurav Vangaal, senior analyst, forecasting, at IHS Automotive, told the financial daily the booming demand in Mexico is a blessing in disguise for some carmakers that were unable to utilise their production capacity due to slow demand. 
 
Rakesh Srivastava, senior VP for sales and marketing at Hyundai Motor India, told ET his company plans to raise exports to Mexico by 37% in 2015 and ship over 12,500 cars. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nissan">Nissan</a> is the market leader in Mexico, followed by GM and VW. Mid-size sedans like Nissan Sunny, Volkswagen Vento and Ford Fiesta make up for over 10% of the market at approximately 1.2 lakh units. 
 
Another factor is that Mexico's currency is weakening, making its imports expensive. The Mexican Peso has moved up to 16.26 against the US dollar from 12.65 in 2012.

German automaker <keyword id="6361865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Volkswagen" source="Orion">Volkswagen</keyword> will kick off its electrification journey in India with the launch of its electric car ID.4 later this year as part of its global efforts of mass electrification, a senior company official said on Thursday. The company, which unveiled the ID.4, expects the Indian passenger vehicles market to grow 5-7 per cent this year while it is targeting 10-15 per cent growth for itself. "Our first step to the electrification journey in India begins with the ID.4...," Executive Director Sales International Operations, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Michael Mayer said here at the Volkswagen annual brand conference. He said the ID.4 is being brought in as part of the company's global efforts of mass electrification. It will be launched in the Indian market later this year. Globally, VW is leading in the electrification journey, he said, adding, as part of the company's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement 2030, it is continuing efforts in various spheres, including the development of charging infrastructure that's key to acceptance of EVs, recycling of batteries, digitalisation and connectivity solutions. The company is offering different products from ID.2 to ID.Buzz globally targeting several segments of customers, Mayer said, adding that globally, VW's electric vehicle (EV) sales grew 21 per cent at around 4 lakh units in 2023. "This is not the end of the story. It is our goal to take this success to other markets," Mayer said. However, he added, "This would be a phased approach, wherein we will strengthen our current portfolio on the basis of brand positioning for the market." "India, needless to say, continues to be a key market for Volkswagen. India is a 4 million car market now and is expected to grow 5-7 per cent this year," he asserted. The Indian automotive industry is now ranked third in the world even surpassing Japan, Mayer said, adding, "Who would have thought it ten years back?" He said VW is committed to the Indian market and the company will continue to introduce its premium products over the next few years. Volkswagen Passenger Cars India Brand Director Ashish Gupta said the company's sales grew 8 per cent in 2023. The company had sold around 44,000 units. "Our target this year in 2024 is to increase it by 10-15 per cent," he added. The company will continue to expand its sales and service network to tap opportunities coming from Tier II and Tier III cities. He said the company is targeting to have a presence in 170 cities with 230 sales and pre-owned car touch points along with 150 service centres in 2024. Last year, it had set up 45 sales and service touch points, he said, adding that at present, the company has 193 sales and pre-owned car sales touch points and 145 service centres in 145 cities.
