After facing significant <keyword id="20192095" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flight-disruptions" source="keywords">flight disruptions</keyword> recently, <keyword id="21269688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara-CEO" source="keywords">Vistara CEO</keyword> <keyword id="20128232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinod-Kannan" source="keywords">Vinod Kannan</keyword> on Thursday told the airline staff that the "worst is behind us" and operations have already stabilised. Pilot woes have forced the <keyword id="21105887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group-airline" source="keywords">Tata Group airline</keyword> to temporarily cut down capacity by 10 per cent or 25-30 flights daily. While acknowledging that things should have been planned better, Kannan said it has been a "learning experience". He also said it has been a challenging start to the new financial year and the airline faced significant operational disruption from March 31 to April 2. "The anxiety and frustration felt by our customers was matched in even measure to the pain that all of us felt in seeing our much-loved brand drawing negative commentary from various quarters... I assure you that the worst is behind us, and we have already stabilised our operations, with our on-time performance (OTP) increasing to 89 per cent on 9 April 2024 (second highest among all Indian airlines)," he said in a message to the staff. The full-service carrier has around 6,500 people, including about 1,000 pilots. In the wake of the disruptions, the top management of the airline had held a virtual meeting with the pilots. One of the reasons for the disruptions was also that some section of pilots reporting sick to protest against the new contract that will result in pay revision. According to Kannan, there were a multitude of reasons for the disruptions, including ATC delays, bird hits, and maintenance activities early last month. "We were stretched in our pilot rosters and there was not enough resilience to withstand injects that we would otherwise have weathered. We could and should have planned better, and this has been a learning experience for us which we will review thoroughly," the <keyword id="20018887" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vistara" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Vistara" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> chief said. Most of the cancellations were in the domestic network and the carrier is working on plans for May and beyond. "While the events of the last week may seem like a setback, the hallmark of our organisation has always been that we have bounced back from tough situations ' and emerged stronger. "... I trust each of you to continue to put in all efforts to ensure that we do not let our brand, and our customer, down," Kannan said. As we emerge from this difficult phase, he said it is this commitment to being a customer-oriented airline that will help it bounce back stronger. The airline has also reached out to customers impacted by the cancellations and delays over the affected period. "We have provided the necessary compensation as per the regulatory mandate, and have also offered additional service recovery vouchers for passengers whose flights were significantly delayed," the Vistara chief said. The carrier has 70 aircraft in its fleet and is to operate more than 300 flights daily in the ongoing summer schedule. "Dealing with disappointed customers is never easy but amidst all the chaos, we have received feedback on how some of you went beyond the call of duty to assist our customers to the extent possible," Kannan said and expressed gratitude to the pilots for cooperating and stepping up to support operations.

Thereafter, Vistara aircraft will be operated by Air India and bookings for the routes operated by these planes will be redirected to Air India's website. "Vistara will continue to take bookings and operate flights as usual till 11 November 2024," the release said. The merger of Vistara with Air India was announced in November 2022 and post-completion of the deal, Singapore Airlines will have a 25.1 per cent stake in Air India. Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan said the merger is about offering passengers more choice with a larger fleet and a wider network while elevating the overall travel experience. "Cross-functional teams from Air India and Vistara have been working together for many months to make the transition of aircraft, flying crew, ground-based colleagues and, most importantly, our valued customers, into the new Air India as seamless as possible," Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson said. In a separate release, Air India welcomed the Union Cabinet's approval for the foreign direct investment by Singapore Airlines in the airline. Vistara to operate last flight under its brand on November 11

Full-service carrier <keyword id="2467342" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vistara" source="Orion">Vistara</keyword> will continue to expand and expects to have a total of 70 planes by mid-2024, its chief <keyword id="7656482" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vinod-kannan" source="Orion">Vinod Kannan</keyword> said on Tuesday. The airline, a joint venture between <keyword id="46894" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-sons" source="Orion">Tata Sons</keyword> and Singapore Airlines, reported an operating profit for the first time since its inception in the three months that ended December 2022. Out of the total 70 planes, there will also be 10 A321s and 53 A320 neos, the Vistara CEO said at a briefing. Among the 53 A320 neos, 10 planes will have all economy class and the rest will have three classes. Currently, the airline has a fleet of 53 aircraft. "We will continue to expand... more international routes (will be added)," Kannan said. Without disclosing the exact profit figure in the December quarter, the airline also said it crossed the USD 1 billion revenue mark and remained EBITDA positive in the current fiscal year. Air India's progress has been 'nothing short of stunning': CEO Campbell Wilson

New Delhi, Jan 21 () Some of the 50 aircraft that will join the Vistara's fleet over the next three years will have just economy-class seats and the airline has factored in operational challenges that may arise from having planes with different class configurations, its CEO Leslie Thng said on Tuesday.
"Vistara is at a stage of maturing, which means it is growing in scale, size as well as in creating robust operational processes. We have factored in the operational challenges that may arise from having different fleets and are confident of successfully steering through them," the Vistara CEO told . 
Asked if the airline has decided the routes on which the all-economy aircraft would be deployed, Thng said, "No, we have not yet decided the specific routes, but those few aircraft will be deployed on routes that see weaker demand for front cabins (means business class and premium economy class) or on seasonal leisure routes. This only means offering the right product for the right market."
At present, there are 39 aircraft in Vistara's fleet comprising 19 A320neo aircraft, 13 A320ceo aircraft and seven Boeing B737-800NG aircraft. 
One of the A320neo aircraft in its fleet currently is of all-economy configuration.
Rest of the A320neo aircraft as well as all A320ceo planes have three-class configuration -- business class, premium economy class and economy class.
The Boeing B737 planes have dual class configuration with business and economy classes. 
Thng said that the decision to have some all-economy aircraft in the fleet was taken after careful evaluation of the current market dynamics, i.e. to offer the right product to the market demand. 
However, he asserted, "It is important to note that the three-class cabin configuration is one of Vistara's strongest USPs and we have every intention of offering it on as many routes as possible."
"We are not going to operate our all-economy aircraft under a sub-brand with a different business model," he added.
Vistara has codeshare agreement with various foreign full-service carriers (FSCs) - Lufthansa Airlines, United Airlines, Japan Airlines, British Airways etc.
When asked how he will deal with their passengers if they are taking a connecting Vistara flight in India that has all-economy configuration, he replied, "We do not think that this will impact our codeshare operations."
In response to another question, he stated that Vistara will not be operating all-economy aircraft on any of its international routes. DSP TIR

New Delhi, Feb 19 () Full service carrier <keyword id="2467342" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> plans to offer in-flight broadband service on certain international routes by March-end after <keyword id="8801436" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="inducting-dreamliners">inducting Dreamliners</keyword> and Airbus 321 planes, a senior airline official said on Wednesday. A joint venture between Tatas and <keyword id="6368386" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="singapore-airlines">Singapore Airlines</keyword>, Vistara has tied up with Tata group firm Nelco to offer in-flight connectivity service. Vistara would also be the first domestic carrier to provide in-flight braodband for fliers. Boeing 787 aircraft are known as Dreamliners. The airline would offer access to in-flight connectivity only on Dreamliners and Airbus 321 aircraft on international routes, Vistara Chief Strategy Officer Vinod Kannan told reporters here. The service would also be available for domestic customers when these planes are operated in the Indian airspace. Nelco has partnered with Panasonic Avionics Corporation to start the service. "We have ordered Dreamliners and A321 which will be delivered by February-end or March. We will start their commercial operations on international routes by March-end or April with in-flight service on board. "In the next two weeks, we will sit with Nelco and Panasonic to decide on the price," Kannan said. Vistara has ordered six Dreamliners and ten A321 planes. In-flight broadband service would be made available on all these aircraft. "We will get four Dreamliners and two A321 aircraft this year. By end of 2021, we will be offering in-flight connectivity in 10 aircraft," Kannan said. According to him, a decision on offering the service in domestic flights would also depend on routes where Dreamliners and A321 aircraft would fly. "We will initially look at offering broadband service. We have not decided on offering voice calls," Kannan said. Nelco MD and CEO P J Nath said the capability to provide both broadband and voice services would exist. It would depend on airline partners on the way they would like to package the services, he added. "We are delighted that Nelco is spearheading in providing the long awaited Aero in-flight connectivity services in the country. Vistara is first airline to sign up for this service," Nath said. Panasonic Avionics Corporation Vice President Tom Eskola said passengers would be able to access the service even at a height of 35,000 feet. "We currently cover 99.6 per cent of routes on which aircraft fly. We are also migrating our system to generation 3 from generation 1. Vistara will have access to our generation 3 system when they start operation which will offer high speed broadband service during flight as they get on ground," Eskola said.

Akasa Air has enough capital to induct 72 aircraft thanks to Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s visionary role, says CEO

New Delhi, Dec 27 () Vistara has partnered with Tata group company Nelco for inflight data services, which are expected to be rolled by the full service carrier shortly, according to a senior government official.
 Nearly five years after starting operations, Vistara -- a joint venture between Tatas and Singapore Airlines -- is also likely to be the first domestic carrier to provide inflight connectivity within India.
 Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash said required spectrum has been allocated for the purpose.
 "Vistara has tied up with Nelco and they have taken transponder space from ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation)...they had come to us for spectrum allocation which we have done. And they will be launching these services very shortly," he said.
 When contacted, a Vistara spokesperson said, "we have not finalised this yet," referring to launch of the services.
 An email sent to Nelco seeking comments did not elicit any immediate response and the company's spokespersons were also unavailable.
 While airlines can offer both voice and data connectivity under the 'Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules-2018' notified by the government in December 2018, data connectivity is expected to be offered first, Prakash said.
 "There can also be voice but voice is not happening right now. Still data is as good as voice, because once you have data you can use Over-The-Top (OTT) and make WhatsApp calls," he noted.
 Regarding inflight wi-fi services, Prakash said the tariffs are not regulated by the government.
 "It is for them to decide what tariff they will charge. I suppose it will be an add-on service that the airlines will offer in relation to their competitors but whether they will charge or not charge, is their decision," the Telecom Secretary said.
 Telecom pricing is currently under forbearance, and "tariff is not an issue in this", he added.
 Vistara, in which Tata Sons has 51 per cent stake and the rest is with Singapore Airlines, began commercial services on January 9, 2015. With a fleet of 39 planes, the carrier operates more than 200 flights a day and is working on expanding its overseas presence.
Last month, Nelco said it expects to roll out in-flight data connectivity services by January but did not divulge the airlines it would be partnering with for the offering.
 In March, the company obtained a license from the Department of Telecommunications for providing In-Flight and Maritime Connectivity (IFMC) services.
 "We are hoping to start inflight connectivity services around January timeframe. We will start with data services," Nelco Managing Director and CEO P J Nath had said recently.
 As per the terms and condition of the IFMC license, the services would be activated once the aircraft attains a minimum height of 3,000 metres in Indian airspace to avoid interference with terrestrial mobile networks.
 The IFMC license is granted against an annual fee of Re 1 for a period of 10 years and the permit holder has to pay licence fees and spectrum charges based on revenue earned from services.
 In September, Nelco launched its maritime communications services in the country, and said the offering would enable high-end support to those in sea by providing access to voice, data and video services while travelling on sailing vessels, cruise liners, ships in India, using satellite technology. "We do not rule out going international before the earlier announced time,, Vistara CEO Phee Teik Yeoh told ET.

Vistara, which completes two years of domestic operations on January 9, has maintained that it would like to start flying overseas as early as possible. 
 
In June last year, the government relaxed a 12-year-old rule on Indian airlines flying overseas by scrapping a requirement for them to complete five years of domestic services. It retained the minimum fleet size norm at 20 aircraft. 
 
In a move that possibly signals it is preparing for an international launch, Yeoh said the next aircraft to be inducted will be its first Airbus 320 neo (new engine option) and will come with a changed interior. "Our 14th aircraft that joins in April this year will come with interior changes. 
 
I would not specify the kind of change but it is based on a collection of the data and feedback we got from passengers,” Yeoh said.
