The scientists at the centre have developed indigenous technology to produce protein based medicines like insulin, streptokinase (clot buster) and the hepatitis B vaccine. 
 
Presently India has to depend on patented technology of the foreign countries to produce insulin, streptokinase and hepatitis B etc. With 66 million diabetics and 40 million hepatitis B patients in the country, this will be a major reliever for many. 
 
Pichia is the vector that is currently used in insulin. 
 "Because Pichia is patented, Indian biotech companies have to pay the inventor, which adds to the cost of the vaccine. Thus, we felt the need to develop new expression systems," Dr <keyword id="33921" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jagmohan-singh">Jagmohan Singh</keyword>, chief scientist at IMTECH whose team developed India's first expression vector for therapeutic proteins, told the Economic Times. 
 
Pichia vector is generally licensed for commercial research for $50,000 with annual maintenance fee of $5000 to $30,000. In case the product is commercialized, the fee is $75,000 plus royalty ranging between 3% and 5%. 
 The present cost of hepatitis B vaccine in India ranges between Rs 45 (<keyword id="242973" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute">Serum Institute</keyword>) and Rs 250 per paediatric dose of 10 microgram in 0.5 ml, according to the news report. The cost of adult dose of 20 microgram is nearly double. The normal regimen of vaccination involves three such injections. For insulin, the price varies from Rs 140 to Rs 325 per injection. The slow release variant of insulin called Glargine costs between Rs 410 and Rs 1,475 for a 10 ml vial. 
 "So far we have expressed hepatitis B vaccine at laboratory scale level in fission yeast. Once the production is scaled up, the production cost is estimated to be around Re 1 per dose, while the lowest production cost reported for Pichia-based system is Rs. 4 per dose and the lowest <keyword id="6357388" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MRP">MRP</keyword> in market is Rs 45/- dose. Even this is beyond the reach of people below poverty line. Thus, there is scope to bring the commercial price of hepatitis B vaccine further down. Once the proof-of-concept stage is complete, we will undertake expression of other proteins like insulin, antibodies in fission yeast," <keyword id="263572" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Virendra-Singh">Virendra Singh</keyword>, department of hepatology Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, told the ET.

Briefing political party leaders in Parliament House, Jaishankar said India has spoken to the <keyword id="22306740" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bangladesh-Army" source="keywords">Bangladesh Army</keyword> Chief to ensure the safety of over 10,000 Indian students in that country, the sources said. Replying to questions from various leaders, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, the minister did not rule out the role of foreign governments in the unrest in the country but emphasised that the situation was too fluid, and the government has been keeping a watch on the evolving situation, they said. At the meeting, Gandhi asked if foreign governments might be involved in fuelling the crisis there. Jaishankar said that households and properties belonging to minorities were targeted by protestors in the neighbouring country. Noting that it has been not even 24 hours since Hasina arrived in India, he said she is in a state of shock and the government is giving her time to recover before it speaks to her over various issues, including her future plans, the sources said. The External Affairs Minister is scheduled to make a statement on the issue in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. Various leaders, including Gandhi, conveyed their full cooperation to the government on the issue. YSR Congress leader V Vijaysai Reddy said his party supports the government in the interest of the country. "Briefed an All-Party meeting in Parliament today about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh. Appreciate the unanimous support and understanding that was extended," Jaishankar posted on X after the meeting. Congress leader Karti Chidambaram said the government had briefed an all-party meeting on the situation in Bangladesh. "Congress party is fully with the government as far as national security and national interest are concerned," Chidambaram told PTI. However, he was not present at the meeting. Bangladesh plunged into uncertainty after extraordinary street protests over job quota forced Hasina to quit and flee. The all-party meeting was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister J P Nadda, JD(U) leader and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh 'Lalan', JD(S) leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, DMK leader T R Baalu, SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav, Trinamool leader Sudip Bandypapdhyay, NCP leader Supriya Sule among others. Ahead of the meeting, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut had said that the rulers in India should learn lessons from the developments in Bangladesh. "When democracy faces danger and those in power become dictators wearing a mask of democracy, the people of the country tolerate them for a while and then there is anarchy," Raut said. CPI(M) member P Santosh Kumar said the situation in Bangladesh was very volatile. "We are with the people of Bangladesh, not with Jamaat-e-Islami, military or with Sheikh Hasina. We are with students of Bangladesh. This is the fate of all autocrats," Kumar said. Samajwadi Party member Virendra Singh said the situation in Bangladesh was a message for all countries which do not listen to people's voices. "Similar situations happen in countries where attempts to end democracy and bring dictatorship take place. It is very unfortunate," Singh said. BJP Rajya Sabha member Lahar Singh Siroya said the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are keeping an eye on the whole issue. "They would have been taking necessary steps. Our country is capable of handling the issue," the BJP Rajya Sabha member said. The terrifying <keyword id="146947" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="lightning" source="Orion">lightning</keyword> and thunder phenomenon that <keyword id="6355192" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lucknow" source="Orion">Lucknow</keyword> witnessed in the wee hours of September 11 is the kind never seen before. Although lightning with thunderstorms are not unusual, the residents of Lucknow faced a harrowing night because of high frequency. The Met officials said there was lightning for 11 and half hours intermittently from 7.40 p.m. to 7.10 a.m. However, the India Meteorological Department (<keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword>) does not have data on the number of lightning strikes between these hours and any previous records. Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at IMD Lucknow, said that movement of cloud mass is comparatively slower during monsoon. "Cyclonic circulations over north-west Madhya Pradesh and the monsoon trough was slightly to the south of its normal position due to which there was abundant moisture supply from Bay of Bengal over the state of Uttar Pradesh in the lower troposphere. "At the same time there was an active western disturbance in the middle troposphere which was interacting with low level easterly due to this synoptic setting up this kind of rainfall activities in Uttar Pradesh," he explained. Noted environmentalist Prof Venkatesh Dutta from the Department of Environmental Science at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, said: "Lightning occurred owing to the fact of intense heating of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Such type of extreme weather events undoubtedly reflects the impacts of rising atmospheric temperature and climate change. August was the hottest-ever recorded in Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh, and the heat intensified cloud activities." Virendra Singh Yadav, a retired deputy director of the Geological Survey of India, said: "Lucknow and adjoining areas may also experience an increase in the severity and frequency of these incidents in future. Hence, there is a need for prevention, preparedness and to invest in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) which will save lives, livestock, property and infrastructure. It is a wakeup call to us by nature. "Lightning is of three types. The first is thundercloud or intra-cloud lightning. The second is cloud-to-cloud or Inter-cloud lightning and third is cloud-to-ground lightning (CG). The third type of lightning takes a toll on lives and property, and therefore, is of more concern to us. However, inter-cloud and intra-cloud lightning are also dangerous as they may hit aircrafts. "Its peak power and total energy are very high, with the peak power discharge in the order of a 100 million watts per metre of the channel and the peak channel temperature approaching 30,000 degrees Celsius. Peak currents in a lightning discharge range up to hundreds of kilo amperes (kA) with its typical value being 40 kA." Another scientist said: "Owing to global warming, we are observing the increasing number of hot days in a year which, when combined with rain, leads to occurrence of more intense thunderstorms and lightning of greater intensity."

Moradabad, Apr 20 () The head of a government health centre in the district, who had tested positive for COVID-19, and a 72-year-old man suspected to have contracted coronavirus have died here, officials said on Monday. Both of them were at a quarantine centre in the TMU Hospital in the district and died on Sunday night, the officials said. According to the incharge of the quarantine centre, Virendra Singh, the 35-year-old doctor was involved in treatment of COVID-19 patients and later contracted the infection. He was the head of Tajpur health centre and was admitted to TMU Hospital on April 13, Singh said. He said the other man was admitted to the hospital with chest-related problems on April 17. Moradabad Chief Medical Officer Milind Garg said the test report of the septuagenarian is still awaited. CORR CK

Jaipur, Jan 11 (IANS) Amid the dwindling Covid-19 numbers and the extensive preparations for roll-out of the coronavirus vaccine in India, the medical experts are discussing the million dollar question: which phenomenon will emerge first -- the natural disappearance of the virus or the total vaccination for containing the virus. A total of 16,311 new coronavirus cases have been reported in the last 24 hours in India -- the lowest in around six-and-half months. Also, a total of 161 more fatalities have been reported in India which is the lowest in the last seven-and-half-months, the Union Health Ministry's data showed. In fact, the Covid figures since the last many days are touching a new low in India which signify the reducing impact of the virus. Virendra Singh, a senior medical practitioner quoted the 2002-2004 SARS outbreak and said: "The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) came up in 2002 and made a strong impact in the far East nations. However, slowly, it vanished in 2004 on its own. In many far East countries, its spread was quite strong but its disappearance was also sudden. It was also called as SARS-COV-1, which was more like an elder brother to SARS Covid 2. So 'both brothers' might have some similar features and in this perspective, it can disappear on its own." Speaking in the same reference, Dr. Sudhir Bhandari, principal and controller, SMS Medical College, says the natural evolution of virus could be the strong reason for the dwindling numbers of the covid cases. Virus severity, over the time, goes down. Also people are now following social distancing and are wearing masks which is checking its spread. Thirdly, herd immunity is being generated at large. Over the period of time, it will be evaluated which factors worked the most in this matter," he added. He further added that the virus follows a natural course of history. Quoting the case of Swine Flu, he said: "Swine flu comes out strong every four years. In the last two years, there has been no strong case of swine flu. While most of these viruses disappear on their own, many others mutate and change their nature." The Spanish flu which hit us large over a century back also disappeared after two years. At that time, the medical infrastructure across the world was not so strong. Viruses hence can be seen following a natural cyclic pattern," added Bhandari. Jaipur, May 6 () The practice of nasal rinsing and gargling with saline water has the potential of helping people fight against COVID-19, according to a report.The report in international health journal 'Lung India' published on Tuesday points out the significance of nasal rinsing and gargling with saline water in preventing the contract of the virus in the present scenario when the world is reeling under the COVID-19 pandemic. The report, based on a systematic analysis of articles on nasal rinsing and gargling, says that hypertonic saline (three tea spoons in half litre of water) has the potential of preventing the contract of COVID-19. "This practice may have the potential of add-on therapy in prevention of diseases like COVID-19," Dr Sheetu Singh, one of the authors and a chest specialist at SMS Medical college, Jaipur told reporters here.She said gargling and nasal rinsing may prevent viral diseases entering through nose and throat. "Like hand wash, nose and throat wash may also remove or reduce viral load," she said.Noted pulmonologist Dr Virendra Singh, who co-authored the report, said the practice can saves lives. "The current emphasis is on preventive strategies such as social distancing, wearing mask, and hand washing. The technique of nasopharyngeal wash to prevent the virus from inhabiting and replicating in the nasal and pharyngeal mucosa has been suggested to be useful in reducing symptoms, transmission, and viral shedding in cases of viral acute respiratory tract infections," the report said. It said that hypertonic saline gargles and nasal rinse may also be useful in prevention and care of COVID-19 patients. "The present evidence emphasises the need of randomised controlled trials to evaluate the role and mechanism of nasopharyngeal wash in COVID-19," it said.
