Citing market conditions are sluggish, <keyword id="397813" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Viom-Networks">Viom Networks</keyword> has delayed its Initial Public Offering (IPO) from December this year to March-April 2016. 
 
The board of Telecom tower operator Viom Networks will meet in August and take a final call on the IPO. 
 
Sunil Kanoria, director at Viom, told Economic Times, “Even if the board decides on an IPO, it is unlikely before March 2016 as market conditions are not favourable now." 
 
Industry officials told the financial daily that Viom was mulling an IPO by December this year in a bid to fund growth plans. Viom’s talks to sell controlling stake to American Tower Corp (ATC) had failed due to valuations. 
 
Now, the telecom tower operator was looking to raise a shade over Rs 1,000 crore to fund tower site expansion amid surging carrier demand for data sites and open an exit route for stakeholders keen to cash out. 
 ET reported that <keyword id="6359475" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Teleservices">Tata Teleservices</keyword> has 54% in Viom while Kolkata-based Srei holds 18.5%. The remaining ones are owned by few private equity firms. 
 
Sources told ET that Viom was even pushing for an enterprise value of nearly 12 times its EBITDA, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation &amp; amortisation, a key profitability indicator. 
 
A company executive told ET, “Viom is in no tearing hurry to do the IPO because its internal accruals are strong and its EBITDA is at Rs 2,000 crore annually. But the company needs to expand its tower capacity to meet expected boom in demand.” 
 
Meanwhile, Viom is expecting an additional demand of nearly two lakh data sites over next 18 months as mobile carriers are splurging on 3G networks and Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio Infocomm is due to launch 4G services by December. 
 
Stock market is not buoyant. On Wednesday, market bellwether Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex closed 484 points, or 1.72%, down from its previous close in response to massive plunge in Chinese stock markets.

Viom Networks defers IPO plan to next year over sluggish market

Thirteen <keyword id="44528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="FDI">FDI</keyword> proposals totalling Rs 6,500 crore got clearance from the foreign investment promotion board (FIPB). Telecom tower firm Viom <keyword id="50752" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Networks">Networks</keyword>' Rs 5,900 crore proposal was one of them. 
 
The board cleared the proposal of ATC Asia Pacific Pte to acquire majority stake in Viom Networks involving Rs 5,900 crore. <keyword id="48503" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alstom">Alstom</keyword> Manufacturing India's proposal worth Rs 400 crore and pharma firm Cipla's proposal of Rs 150 crore were cleared by the FIPB, sources said. 
 
The FIPB had 26 FDI proposals on its agenda today. 
 
The inter-ministerial panel FIPB, chaired by Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das, can vet foreign direct investment proposals up to Rs 5,000 crore. 
 
In October last year, American Tower Corporation (ATC) has signed pact to acquire 51 per cent in Viom Networks at total enterprise value of around Rs 21,000 crore, including debt of about Rs 5,800 crore of Viom, a largest foreign direct investment in telecom sector the current fiscal.

FDI proposals totalling Rs 6,500 crore gets cleared by FIPB

In a bid to to lower its debt substantially, Anil Ambani-led <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=reliance+communications">Reliance Communications </a>(RCOM) is looking at selling its stake in tower unit <keyword id="44524" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Infratel">Reliance Infratel</keyword> this week that will mark the complete exit of the company from the telecom tower business in India. 

	"The deal will be announced within a couple of days, and will value Infratel at around Rs 22,000 crore," one of the people said. Last minute details are being worked out.
 

	ET had reported in September that RCOM was in talks with US-based Farallon Capital and Tillman Capital for the sale and that the due diligence process was going on.
 

	Some bidders had evinced interest to buy out RCOM's entire stake, while two others wanted 51 per cent. RCOM insiders said the company would prefer to completely exit the tower business as it needs the funds to reduce its debt of over Rs 38,000 crore.
 

	Standard Chartered and SBI Capital Markets are managing the stake sale process.
 The deal would be the second such development in the tower industry after <keyword id="586673" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="American-Tower-Corporation">American Tower Corporation</keyword> bought controlling stake in Viom Networks in October. Viom, with around 42,000 towers, was valued at around Rs 21,000 crore. 

	While RCOM owns 96 per cent of Reliance Infratel, minority and institutional investors such as George Soros' Quantum (M), NSR Partners, Galleon, HSBC Daisy Investment (Mauritius), Drawbridge Towers and Investment Partners B (Mauritius), hold the rest. The minority partners are expected to exit with RCOM as well.
 RCOM aims to reduce its massive debt by trying to sell its tower and overseas business units, as well as monetise its DTH arm and land holdings. It expects to also raise some funds from trading and sharing its airwaves with <keyword id="1543410" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio-Infocomm">Reliance Jio Infocomm</keyword>. 

	Reliance Infratel, with some 45,000 towers and over 120,000 km of intra- and inter-circle fibre network, trails Indus Towers, ATC-Viom and Bharti Infratel by number of towers.

You would not have heard the name of <keyword id="93210" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hemant-Kanoria">Hemant Kanoria</keyword> too often in life, but this chairman of <keyword id="112945" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SREI-Infrastructure-Finance">SREI Infrastructure Finance</keyword> can boast of having taken several smart business decisions that have benefited him, including making money off loans to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Kingfisher-Airlines-case-is-being-investigated-by-SFIO-confirms-Arun-Jaitley/articleshow/52206980.cms">Kingfisher Airlines</a> or exiting timely from Viom Networks, with profits in his hand. 
 Now, he is all set to sell a stake in Sahaj e-Village, while wanting Alibaba owner <keyword id="424838" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jack-Ma">Jack Ma</keyword> as his partner. "They are in China. They know about the population In India. They would get such an opportunity on a platter," Kanoria told ET in an interview. On the other hand, he added that he is yet to approach anyone from the Alibaba team. 
 
He, however, didn’t shy away from comparing the Chinese ecommerce giant with Sahaj, where rural e-kiosks provide services like micro-insurance, education and utility bill payments. 
 
"It is run by village entrepreneurs. They are partners with us. They develop and run the businesses. Instead of being job seekers, they become job creators," he said. "It is almost the Alibaba of India on a more structured manner, having both physical and technical aspects. Here we have delivery points also. We now have 30,000 centres, catering to about 300 million people." 
 
Sahaj, which is primarily present in East India, is now expanding to several states like Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. 
 
Talking of his business decisions, he can give an advice or two to state-run banks who are doing everything they can to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Vijay-Mallya-will-return-to-India-but-only-if-his-safety-and-freedom-are-ensured/articleshow/52291176.cms">bring Vijay Mallya back to India</a> so that they can recover loans from him. Kanoria was one of the earliest lenders who were able to recover loans from the now defunct <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/UB-says-Kingfisher-Airlines-logo-only-for-aviation-warns-of-legal-challenges/articleshow/51643679.cms">airline</a>, having an additional, almost equal amount to spare. 
 
It was in July 2012 that SREI bought ICICI Bank's entire outstanding exposure of Rs 450 crore in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/To-recover-dues-Kingfisher-Airlines-logo-will-also-go-under-hammer/articleshow/51612220.cms">Kingfisher</a> and shocked everyone. However, the deal was "ringfenced," as in, it was backed with shares of United Spirits, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Heineken-may-ask-Vijay-Mallya-to-step-down-from-United-Breweries-board/articleshow/51444110.cms">liquor firm that Mallya owned</a>. 
 
SREI held on to the shares through its global fund arm India Global Competitive Fund, right to the point when share prices rocketed because of British liquor giant Diageo announcing plans to buy USL's stake. "I think it was April-May 2014, when there was an open offer. We didn't go for the open offer but sold our shares in the market," said Kanoria.

Reliance Jio Infocomm has signed a tower-sharing agreement with Tower Vision, which will enable the telecom unit of Reliance Industries to provide faster and cheaper data and voice services. 
 
“The deal is for sharing 8,400 towers of Tower Vision,” the companies said in a joint statement. 
It is the fifth tower-sharing agreement by Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio. Earlier, the company had tied up with Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Viom Towers and ATC India. 
 
"We are continuing to build wide coverage of high speed 4G networks through a combination of towers that we are constructing on our own and those that we are renting from quality tower infrastructure partners," said Sanjay Mashruwala, managing director at Reliance Jio. 
 
Reliance Jio is looking to lease about 70,000 towers and put up 30,000 of its own as it targets to launch fourth-generation voice and data services in the October-December quarter. 
 
The company owns all-India airwaves in the 2,300 MHz band since May 2010, but it has not rolled out the service yet. But it needs to do so by May 2015, as per the license obligation. Reliance Jio also bought airwaves in the 1,800 MHz band in an auction held in February 2014. 
Reliance Jio's eagerly anticipated data services are likely to bring down data prices. This, in turn, may lead to another tariff war among various service providers.

At-home kits that let patients sample their stool offer an alluring promise: insight into what's going on inside our guts.Here, at the final stop on a highway of nerves that links our brains to our stomachs, are believed to lie the keys to new treatments for everything from digestive diseases like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to mental illnesses like depression. Those treatments are focused on the microbiome, the massive community of bacteria in our guts. If the data from the microbiome can be turned into a useful health product, entrepreneurs and investors believe they could be onto the next big wellness trend, similar to the way genetic insights have been turned into a range of hot consumer products by the likes of 23andMe and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ancestry-ceo-margo-georgiadis-on-launch-of-health-dna-tests-2019-10">Ancestry</a>. But testing poop isn't quite as simple as spitting in a tube for a genetic test. Several startups including uBiome and Arivale tried and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ubiome-bankruptcy-ceases-operations-liquidates-chapter-7-2019-10">failed</a> to create microbiome-based health products. For the average healthy person, knowledge of the kinds of bacteria that live in their gut doesn't offer much in the way of practical use. And the insights, which can cost thousands of dollars per person, can be of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ubiome-poop-testing-startup-problems-science-microbiome-2019-8">highly variable quality</a>.But some investors see the promise of the microbiome as too great to abandon.High-profile venture capitalists including Vinod Khosla, Marc Benioff, and the venture arms of well-known healthcare companies including the Mayo Clinic and Johnson &amp; Johnson are all placing bets on microbiome startups that combine microbiome analysis with digital tracking.Unlike uBiome or Arivale, which targeted the everyday consumer, most of the new startups are narrowly focused on people with chronic diseases. For these people, who live with conditions like diabetes or irritable bowel syndrome, daily tracking is a must, and <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(15)01481-6">custom diets appear to help</a>.So the companies take the insights from the microbiome and combine them with digital monitoring tools to tell people how they're likely to respond to various foods. One goal is coming up with <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(15)01481-6">personalized diets</a> that significanly curb or completely eliminate their symptoms.<h2>Using digital health tools 'for what they were designed for'</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Courtesy Kimon AngelidesKimon Angelides previously founded Livongo, the first digital health startup to go public in three years.</div></div></div>For Kimon Angelides, the cofounder and CEO of one such microbiome company called <a href="https://vivantehealth.com">Vivante Health</a>, the way to digestive health is through our phones.A serial entrepreneur with a PhD in biochemistry, Angelides previously helped start Livongo, a company that uses a suite of digital tools to help people with diabetes manage their condition. This summer, Livongo became the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/livongo-stock-price-digital-health-ipo-2019-7">first digital health startup to go public</a> in three years. It raised more than $350 million in its IPO, and has a market value of about $1.8 billion.Just as Livongo uses phones and computers to help people manage their diabetes symptoms, Vivante wants to use our devices to help people handle a broader class of digestive illnesses. That includes helping to eliminate the symptoms of hard-to-treat conditions like Crohn's and ulcerative colitis."Here we can actually help and use digital health therapeutics for what they were designed for," Angelides, who launched Vivante in 2016, told Business Insider. Like uBiome and Arivale, Vivante requires customers to submit a poop sample as part of its protocol to see whether certain strains of bacteria may be linked with certain digestive diseases. But where uBiome used a simple method to analyze the sample called 16S, Vivante uses a more consistent method known as shotgun analysis, Angelides said.Vivante has raised $8 million from investors including digital health venture firm Rock Health and Johnson &amp; Johnson's venture ecosystem, JLabs. It was recently valued at $27 million, according to Angelides. Overall, the digital health industry has seen $36.3 billion invested since 2011, <a href="https://rockhealth.com/reports/2019-midyear-digital-health-market-update-exits-are-heating-up/">Rock Health says</a>."You can't do anything about digestive health without looking at the microbiome," Angelides said.<h2>The microbiome is a lucrative challenge that companies are lining up to tackle</h2>Besides Vivante, several other startups are also using digital tools to tackle digestive illness, a generally <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/researchers-launch-marijuana-cbd-company-katexco-inflammatory-diseases-2018-10">overlooked disease area</a> with few good treatments. They include <a href="https://www.viome.com/">Viome</a>, which was founded in 2016 and counts Vinod Khosla and Marc Benioff among its backers, and and Mayo Clinic-backed <a href="http://www.daytwo.com/">DayTwo</a>, founded in 2015.Since 2014, 73 microbiome companies across five countries have raised $2.4 billion, according to <a href="https://cbinsights.com/research/microbiome-health-startups-market-map-expert-intelligence/%20">data</a> from the analytics firm CB Insights. While the US is the current market leader for microbiome startups, Canada, France, Israel, and the UK, are each home to at least four recently-founded microbiome companies.Johnson &amp; Johnson's venture ecosystem, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marijuana-drugs-fda-pharma-studying-marijuana-2018-3">JLabs Innovation network</a>, is leading the charge, according to CB Insights. It's backed both Vivante and DayTwo, along with 11 other microbiome startups.Microbiome patents are heating up too: while fewer than 20 microbiome patents were filed in 2013, 140 were filed in 2017, CB Insights says.Big pharma is showing interest in digital approaches to digestive health as well.In August, Lilly, known for making Viagra competitor Cialis and blockbuster depression drug Prozac, launched an open innovation challenge for digital health approaches to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn's and ulcerative colitis. It's so sensitive to small tweaks in diet and exercise, in fact, that <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/7/1/17">some studies have shown that</a> the <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2607/7/1/14">makeup of bacteria in the microbiome can change</a> on a daily basis.To uBiome and Arivale, the constant fluctuation of the microbiome was a problem. Both companies struggled to create sustainable business models and to prove the role the microbiome played in disease.But to Vivante's Angelides and to the team at DayTwo, the microbiome's wavering nature is a big opportunity.Since <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell-host-microbe/pdfExtended/S1931-3128(19)30250-1">each person responds to foods differently</a>, the platforms look at which foods worsen or improve someone's symptoms - what the companies call a food-as-medicine approach.Users track their symptoms alongside the foods they're eating, get paired with a licensed medical professional, and come up with a <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(15)01481-6">personalized diet that's designed to help</a>."Almost every diet I've come across in my life is about saying 'no' to foods," Yonatan Machado, a director of ventures in Israel for Samsung Next, the technology company's venture arm, told Business Insider. But DayTwo isn't like that, he said.Instead, the platform helps him stay healthy by pointing out the right combinations of foods for his microbiome."It's about saying yes to food, but the right kind of food," Machado said. "That to me is [DayTwo's] 'aha' moment."<h2>'The next new wave' of consumer health innovation?</h2>In contrast to previous microbiome startups, Vivante and DayTwo market their tools narrowly to people with chronic conditions. This strategy helps the companies in several key ways, according to Machado and Angelides: it provides a clear benefit to customers, who can use the information they get from the platforms to immediately change what they eat, and it helps the companies bring in revenue while they build up a microbiome database for future uses."DayTwo has managed to find a single use case" - people with diabetes - "that's very valuable," Machado said.For his part, Angelides sees the microbiome as holding the keys to the "next new wave" of health innovation for consumers, after genetics. While DayTwo sells most of its products through health practitioners, Vivante goes through employers. Vivante has roughly 2,000 customers, Angelides said, and plans to start marketing its tools directly to consumers next year. DayTwo has 40,000 customers, Tread Childs, the director of DayTwo's health practitioner program, told Business Insider.For both Angelides and Machado, using Vivante or DayTwo have changed the way they think about food.As someone with IBS, Angelides was constantly trying to figure out which meals or snacks might trigger symptoms like gas and bloating, but he could never spot a pattern until he started tracking things consistently.
