<ul class="summary-list"><li>Most of the 50 billion shoes produced every year end up in landfills.</li><li>A Dutch company, however, says it's figured out a solution.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sneakers-lead-charge-for-sustainability-apparel-2019-8">Shoes have proven difficult to recycle</a>, but one Dutch company thinks it has found the perfect formula to sustainably break down footwear.</p><p>Nearly 50 billion shoes are produced worldwide every year, and almost all of them eventually <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/adidas-sneakers-plastic-bottles-ocean-waste-recycle-pollution-2019-8">find their way into a landfill</a>, Business Insider <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C032oem5eaY&amp;t=303s"><u>previously reported</u></a>. Typical running shoes contain about 40 different parts made from several different materials, including, plastic, rubber, metal, and ethylene-vinyl acetate (foam), among others.</p><p>Mass-produced shoes are typically held together with extremely powerful glue, which makes them very difficult to recycle because the glue can contaminate the other recyclable materials.</p><p>But Danny Pormes, the CEO and founder of FastFeedGrinded, told BI his company has found a way to recycle every part of a shoe's material. The company, through its unconventional methods, is able to process up to 2,500 shoes per hour.</p><p>"We are willing to change the whole shoe industry," FFG CFO Erna Pordes-Redecker, who is also Danny's wife, told BI. "It's very hard, but we're doing it."</p><div type="image" title="Shoe material falling out of a machine at the FastFeetGrinded facility." height="926" width="1826" msid="106237622" hostid="261" sizebytes="40006"></div><p>Danny, an ex-Dutch Marine, told BI he previously won contracts with the Dutch government to provide shoes to the military through his shoe store Runnersworld Hoorn, but about eight years ago, the military asked him to consider a recycling program.</p><p>FFG, located in the Netherlands, collects shoes from the Dutch military, store collection boxes, and manufacturers who pay the company to destroy defective shoes.</p><p>The company then separates the shoes into different types before pushing them through an automated system that uses heat and friction to disassemble them.</p><p>After the shoes are broken down, the materials are separated by type, such as the rubber, which is ground into fine particles, and the fabric, which can be spun to create new shoe laces.</p><div type="image" title="Rubber and foam that has been ground into powder at the FastFeedGrinded factory." height="918" width="1820" msid="106237623" hostid="261" sizebytes="202314"></div><p>Following the request from the Dutch government, the Pormes's started working with Asics to develop new shoes from recycled materials. Asics says that while it can create new shoes from recycled materials, they can't be used for high performance.</p><p>"If we take our highest performance running shoe, making that entirely from circular recycled materials, it won't have the same functional properties still," Asics manager of sustainability Romy Miltenburg told Business Insider.</p><p>Miltenburg said Asics hopes to get to a point where it can manufacture high-performance shoes from recycled materials.</p><p>"Hopefully, it will not be just a cool side project, but something we can really implement into the way we make shoes at large," Miltenburg said.</p><p>In 2022, FFG faced a devastating fire at its first recycling plant that destroyed everything, but the company opened up a new facility in just 10 months.</p><p>"Most of the people, in the beginning, they are laughing," Pordes-Redecker told BI. The plastic is first crushed into flakes before it's heated and spun into polyester used to create the top of the shoe.</p><p>Adidas released the Futurercraft Loop in 2021, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/adidas-recyclable-sneaker-futurecraft-loop-2019-4">a shoe made entirely from recyclable plastics</a> and no glue. The shoes only use a single material and are designed to be recycled into future versions of the same shoe.</p>

Look for underlayment with an ICC of 60 or higher, and request that your contractor use underlayment with that rating if you've hired a professional. </p><h2><strong>Add layers</strong></h2><p>If you're willing to consider a larger renovation project, adding layers of building material will help soundproof your room. </p><p>"Mass is one of the main soundproofing principles," says Chung-Sao. "When a sound wave encounters a wall with a high mass, it can't vibrate the wall and transfer the sound to the other end."<strong> </strong></p><p>The easiest way to do this in a room is adding a second layer of drywall. On the ceiling, textured paint can also help absorb noise. All of these are permanent and labor-intensive projects. These sandals all feature a deep heel cup, longitudinal and transverse arch support, and a comfortable toe grip. These super-lightweight Birkenstocks only cost $45 — but they're just as comfortable as the leather kind

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-vaporfly-shoes-runners-with-other-sponsors-wear-secretly-2020-8">Nike has led the way</a> in creating "super spikes" - track shoes that experts say <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-nike-vaporfly-shoes-are-like-to-wear-2020-1">make runners faster</a>.</li><li>A Puma-sponsored Olympic champion <a href="https://www.insider.com/nike-olympic-running-shoes-bull-karsten-warholm-gold-medal-2021-8">called Nike shoes "bulls---,"</a> but many brands are developing similar tech.</li><li>Here's how "super spike" technology works and why the design benefits sprinters on the track.</li></ul><p>During the Olympic trials in June, US sprinter Sydney McLaughlin broke the world record in the women's 400-meter hurdle event, finishing in less than 52 seconds. Then on Wednesday, McLaughlin broke her own record by almost half a second at the Tokyo <keyword id="6360967" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="olympics">Olympics</keyword>. The next runner to cross the finish line also broke McLaughlin's June record, yet had to settle for silver. </p><p>It was the same story on the men's side: The winner and runner-up of the 400-meter hurdle final both smashed the previous world record. </p><p>All four of these runners, as well as many others this year, were wearing a relatively new type of shoe technology known as super spikes. </p><p>"If we look at the whole landscape, most people are convinced these 'super spikes' are definitely a factor," Laura Healey, a researcher in <keyword id="138873" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Puma">Puma</keyword>'s footwear innovation department, told Insider. </p><p>Super spikes are any <keyword id="444245" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="track-and-field">track and field</keyword> shoes that utilize the combination of a stiff plate and pliable foam to give runners more energy back with each footfall. <keyword id="69300" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="nike">Nike</keyword> debuted the first such spikes in 2019, forcing companies like Adidas, Puma, New Balance, and Saucony to design their own versions.</p><p>These new spikes are changing what's possible on the track, though that's leading some former and current track stars to worry about the integrity of the sport. Here's how super spikes work.</p><h2>Lightweight, resilient foam is the key to energetic efficiency</h2><div type="image" title="Nike ZoomX Dragonfly shoe" height="4480" width="5973" msid="85103982" hostid="261"></div><p>In the past, spikes were designed simply to protect the bottom of a runner's feet and give traction (spikes, in this case, refers to shoes, not the tiny pointed pieces of metal of the same name). They were made to be as light as possible, with almost no foam - "kind of like functional sandals," Geoff Burns, a sport performance researcher at the University of Michigan, told Insider.</p><p>That's because older types of foam were heavy; think of the ethylene vinyl acetate that's used in exercise mats, for example. So every 100 grams of foam meant about a 1% loss in energetic efficiency. But then came new foam formulations like Nike's ZoomX, which uses polyether block amide, or Pebax, foam. Pebax is almost miraculously lightweight. </p><p>"It was mind-blowing, and allowed shoe companies and scientists to rethink their assumptions," Burns said. "What a shoe could do for the body changed."</p><p>The new foam is softer than its predecessors - offering athletes more comfort as it's compressed - and remarkably resilient. After ZoomX foam gets squished, it bounces back to its original shape, returning 85% of the energy that the runner used to compress the foam. (By comparison, ethylene foam gives back between 60% and 70%.)</p><p>"That's why we didn't see super spikes until now," Healey said. "Previously, the foam wasn't resilient enough to merit adding it into the shoe."</p><div type="image" title="Karsten Warholm hurdling at the Tokyo Olympics." height="2158" width="3000" msid="85103984" hostid="261"></div><p>The super spikes' other key component, stiff plates made of carbon fiber or hard plastic, help sprinters run on their toes. Most people run heel-to-toe, striking the ground with the back of their foot then rolling forward to push off with their toes. But that's an energetically costly process that involves slowing down with each step, according to Kyle Barnes, a marathoner and movement-science researcher at Grand Valley State University in Missouri. </p><p>Barnes told Insider that when he tried Nike's ZoomX Dragonflys, a super spike Nike released <a href="https://runningmagazine.ca/sections/gear/everything-we-know-about-nikes-newly-released-plated-spikes/">a year ago</a>, the shoes instead "teeter-tottered" forward, keeping him running solely on his toes and midfeet.</p><p>"Like a glorified version of falling down a hill," he said.</p><h2>Are super spikes fair?</h2><div type="image" title="nike air zoom maxfly" height="4480" width="5973" msid="85103986" hostid="261"></div><p>Since Nike released its first super-spike  prototypes in 2019, runners using the shoes have broken records in the 1,500-meter, 5,000-meter, and 10,000-meter events, <a href="https://www.outsideonline.com/health/running/super-spikes-olympics-2021/">Outside Online reported</a>. Although other brands now utilize similar designs, some athletes are still concerned that Nike shoes confer an unfair advantage. </p><p>After Norwegian sprinter Karsten Warholm won the men's 400-meter hurdle event in Tokyo, he criticized his US opponent Rai Benjamin - who placed second - for wearing Nike Air Zoom Maxfly super spikes. Maxflys have a component that Nike calls a "Zoom Air unit" under the forefoot: a springy, pliable cushion that helps runners conserve more energy per footfall.</p><p>Warholm, who is sponsored by Puma, called the technology "bulls---," comparing the soles to trampolines and saying the shoes take credibility away from the sport. </p><p>Healey said that although Warholm's Puma super spike has a carbon-fiber plate similar to Nike's, Nike's air unit "has a higher energy return than foams, and Nike has patented this tech."</p><p>Nike, meanwhile, told Insider that the same three components - carbon fiber, foam, and air - have all been used in running shoes for decades, both Nike's and others.</p><p>"We're just smarter about how we engineer and assemble them," the company said.</p><p>Usain Bolt, too, has complained about super spikes, though he did not call out Nike specifically. Bolt, who won the men's 100-meter and 200-meter sprints at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympics, said super spikes give current runners an advantage over previous record-holders.</p><div type="image" title="Nike Air Zoom Maxfly" height="4480" width="5973" msid="85103993" hostid="261"></div><p>"It's weird and unfair for a lot of athletes," Bolt <a href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/exclusive-olympics-athletics-advances-spike-technology-are-laughable-unfair-says-2021-07-19/">told Reuters</a>.  </p><p>None of the super spikes in use at the Tokyo Games violate any rules, according to guidelines from World Athletics, the international governing body of track and field.</p><p>Burns said super-spike technology probably matters less for shorter races, including the 400-meter, since energetic efficiency is less of a factor when a race is over in under a minute.</p><p>"Sprinting is constrained by absolute power output," he said.</p><h2>Nike's spikes could be 2% more efficient - but other shoes are in the same ballpark</h2><p>According to Burns, Nike's super spikes are essentially pared down versions of the company's successful <keyword id="8576968" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vaporfly">Vaporfly</keyword> shoe, which have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-vaporfly-shoes-runners-with-other-sponsors-wear-secretly-2020-8">changed the marathon world</a> over the last five years.</p><p>"It's the same basic recipe," he said. "They've taken their lessons from the road shoe and adapted them to the track."</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-vaporfly-shoes-runners-with-other-sponsors-wear-secretly-2020-8">Vaporflys</a> are the road-running versions of super spikes - they also have a stiff plate and resilient foam. A <a href="https://athleticsillustrated.com/wouter-hoogkamer-interview-the-study-that-named-the-nike-vaporfly-4-super-shoe/">Nike-funded</a> study <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40279-017-0811-2">by independent researchers</a> found the shoes confer about 4% more energy efficiency per footfall. Athletes using Vaporflys dominated the Rio Olympics in 2016, as well as every major long-distance road race thereafter.</p><p>Competing companies scrambled to catch up to the Vaporfly tech, then had to do so again after Nike debuted its first super spikes Burns thinks the Olympics' year-long delay bought those competitors time to catch up.</p><p>"Had the Olympics happened last summer, this would've been a joke," he said. </p><div type="image" title="Karsten Warholm Rai Benjamin Tokyo Olympics" height="2723" width="3988" msid="85103996" hostid="261"></div><p>Nike's spikes don't come with a neat number like the Vaporfly's 4% energy savings, since that figure was calculated based on how much oxygen athletes suck in and carbon dioxide they let out. That measure becomes meaningless when runners cross from aerobic exercise - which uses oxygen - into anaerobic work, which doesn't. Almost all sprinting is anaerobic.</p><p>Still, Burns estimated Nike's super spikes might confer about an energy advantage of 1.5% to 2%.</p><p>"When I look at the 1,500-meter result, in the back of my mind I'm thinking two to three seconds faster," he said, adding, "I hate to say it, it's sort of become an arms race."</p><div type="image" title="mens 100m final tokyo" height="2973" width="5946" msid="85104001" hostid="261"></div><p>Nike, for its part, said runners' achievements are never about their shoes alone.</p><p>"Time and again, we've proven in our labs that Nike racing shoes and spikes provide measurable benefits - but ultimately, it's the athletes on the track and on the roads who validate our work," the company said.</p><p>Plenty of athletes are winning medals wearing non-Nike shoes. In the men's 110-meter hurdle race on Thursday, runners wearing Puma, Adidas, and Nike took the the top three spots - in that order. The men's 400-meter winner was wearing Adidas spikes, and the 200-meter winner wore Pumas. When she broke the 400-meter hurdle world record, McLaughlin was wearing New Balance.</p><p>Healey said a lot of new super spikes confer an advantage that's in the same ballpark as Nike's.</p><p>"It doesn't seem to be all Nike shoes on the podium," she said. "We're in a new era of super spikes."</p>

These sandals all feature a deep heel cup, longitudinal and transverse arch support, and a comfortable toe grip. They still mold perfectly to your feet over time, but not quite as distinctly as the leather footbeds do. </span><span></span></p><p><span>Though all the styles are equally as comfortable, my personal favorite is the <a href="https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=EHFxW6yx8Uo&amp;mid=1237&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fshop.nordstrom.com%2Fs%2Fbirkenstock-essentials-arizona-slide-sandal-women%2F4152948" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arizona</a> - mostly for aesthetic reasons. These super lightweight Birkenstocks only cost $40 - but they're just as comfortable as the leather kind

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>The winner of this year's New York marathon, Geoffrey Kamworor, and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eliud-kipchoge-becomes-first-man-to-run-marathon-in-under-2-hours-2019-10">world marathon record holder, Eliud Kipchoge,</a> both <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marathon-champs-wear-nike-vaporfly-4-shoes-controversy-2019-11">wear Nike Vaporfly shoes</a>.</li><li>Research suggests Vaporflys give runners more energetic efficiency because the shoes' foam-and-carbon sole structure ensures less energy is lost with each step.</li><li>One researcher thinks the International Association of Athletics Federations should regulate the thickness of shoes' midsoles to avoid any unfair advantages.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>The winner of the 2019 New York City marathon and the fastest marathoner in the world share a few things in common: They're both from Kenya, they train together, and they wear Nike Vaporfly running shoes.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marathon-champs-wear-nike-vaporfly-4-shoes-controversy-2019-11">Geoffrey Kamworor wore the shoes</a> on November 3, when he finished the New York marathon in 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 13 seconds. Eliud Kipchoge, who holds the world marathon record, donned a Vaporfly prototype last month when he ran <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kenyan-marathoner-broke-2-hour-record-doesnt-count-2019-10">the first sub-2-hour marathon ever</a>.</p><p>In fact, the $250 neon shoes (they come in bright green, pink, and orange) have been involved in nearly every major running milestone for the last three years.</p><p>But some runners and researchers think the footwear confers an unfair advantage. Both independent and Nike-sponsored studies have confirmed that the shoes increase athletes' energetic efficiency by 4% or more, which yields significant dividends in marathon-length distances. The shoes' foam and carbon-fiber sole is designed to ensure that less energy is lost in each footfall.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>"The runner runs the race, but the shoe enables him or her to run it faster for the same effort or ability," George Burns, a kinesiology researcher and pro-runner, told Business Insider in an email. "So for two athletes of equal ability on race day, the one with the shoes is going to beat the one without the shoes."</p><h2>The Nike Vaporfly sole helps runners lose less energy per step</h2><p>Jake Riley, an American runner who finished ninth in the 2019 Chicago marathon, has said the Nike Vaporfly 4% shoes feel like "<a href="https://www.letsrun.com/news/2019/10/lawrence-cherono-sprints-to-2019-chicago-marathon-title-his-2nd-straight-major-win/">running on trampolines</a>."</p><p>The secret is in the sole, which is designed to help runners get the most forward push for each stride - or, in Burns' words, to run faster for the same "energy expenditure." The soles consist of a foam layer and carbon-fiber plate fused together.</p><p>In addition to protecting our legs from the impact of striking the ground, running shoes store and release energy to propel us forward. The midsole acts like a spring, compressing when a runner lands, storing the energy from that foot strike, and expanding again to return that stored energy into the ground to push them forward.</p><p>Not all of that stored energy gets returned with each footfall, though - some dissipates as heat. But the Vaporfly's design minimizes that amount of lost energy, giving the runner more bang for the buck. </p><p>Traditional running shoes generally use ethylene vinyl-acetate foam, which returns about 65% of the energy you put into it, according to Burns. The Vaporfly, by contrast, uses a new type of foam called Pebax, which is about 87% efficient. (The patent is owned by a French chemical company called Arkema.) The addition of the carbon-fiber plate helps the Pebax foam compress and expand quickly.</p><p>"Otherwise it would be like a marshmallow," Burns said.</p><p>Kyle Barnes, a movement scientist who authored a study about the Vaporfly shoes in February, told Business Insider that the carbon-fiber plate is curved under the front of the shoes, which also makes a big difference. That curvature, he said, helps quickly rock a runner from their heels to their toes as they land and push off again.</p><p>"As soon as you put the shoes on, you have this 'Aha!' moment in which you know these are different than anything you've put on before," Barnes said. "I have several pairs."</p><h2>Over 26.2 miles, 4% more efficiency is a lot</h2><p>Barnes' <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30374945">February study</a>, which he conducted independently of Nike, found that the Vaporfly shoes improved an athlete's running economy by 4.2% compared to Adidas Adizero Adios 3 shoes.</p><p><a href="https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2Fs40279-017-0811-2.pdf">Another independent study</a> looked at early <a href="https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=16331&amp;awinaffid=257137&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nike.com%2Ft%2Fvaporfly-4-flyknit-running-shoe-v7G3FB&amp;clickref=1573241283288a7t6ljvmc" rel="nofollow">Vaporfly</a> models in November 2017 and reached the same conclusion: "The prototype shoes lowered the energetic cost of running by 4% on average," the researchers wrote.</p><p>Over marathon-length distances, that 4% can mean a lot - a person running a 2-hour-10-minute marathon would see a 3.5-minute improvement in speed. For athletes like Kamworor and Riley, that could be the difference between setting a world record and falling short.</p><p>The authors of the 2017 study even predicted at the time that "with these shoes, top athletes could run substantially faster and achieve the first sub-2-hour marathon." </p><p>Two years later, that prediction came true.</p><p>In October, Kipchoge completed the Ineos 1:59 Challenge marathon in Vienna - an event arranged specifically for him to attempt a sub-two-hour marathon - in 1 hour, 59 minutes, 40 seconds.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>Kipchoge was wearing a prototype of the Nike Vaporfly, called AlphaFly, that hasn't hit the market yet. His phalanx of pace-setters that kept him on track were also wearing Vaporflys.</p><h2>The Nike Vaporfly has already taken over the marathon world</h2><p>Kipchoge's sub-2-hour marathon didn't set a new world record because of IAAF rules, but he broke the world marathon record in Berlin in 2018 - wearing Vaporflys.</p><p>In September, when Kamworor set the record for fastest half-marathon (58 minutes and 1 second), he was also wearing Vaporflys. </p><p>The shoes have plenty of other fans as well. In 2019, runners wearing Vaporflys claimed <a href="https://www.runningshoesguru.com/2019/11/nike-vaporfly-shoes-claim-31-out-of-36-podiums-in-2019-world-marathon-majors/">31 out of the 36 male and female podium spots</a> in the six biggest marathons around the world. The three medalists in the men's marathon at the 2016 Summer Olympics all wore a Vaporfly prototype.</p><p>In this year's Chicago marathon, the top 10 male finishers were wearing the shoes, too. And female runner Brigid Kosgei, who broke the world record in the 2019 Chicago race with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 4 seconds, wore Vaporflys to accomplish the feat.</p><p>In fact, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/18/sports/marathon-running-nike-vaporfly-shoes.html">according to The New York Times</a>, the five fastest marathon times ever recorded were all achieved by male runners wearing Nike Vaporfly shoes.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>"It's hard to know what we're actually watching in some respects - is it the technology, or the athletes?" Barnes said. "I know you have to be an exceptional human being to come close to these achievements, but the jumps we're seeing is the technology."</p><h2>'Technology doping'</h2><p>The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), which governs most international track and field events, has yet to make any move to ban or regulate the sneakers. Currently, IAAF rules say shoes can't confer an "unfair assistance or advantage" and have to be "reasonably available" to everyone. But the organization doesn't define those standards more specifically.</p><p>Barnes compared the Vaporfly trend to the swimming races at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, in which competitors set 25  world records. That year, 98% of the Olympic field was wearing Speedo's LZR Racer swimsuit, a full-body sleeve of polyurethane designed to mimic shark skin.  </p><p>"They called it 'technology doping,'" Barnes said. "Even non-Speedo athletes had to switch and wear the suit or there was no chance of them competing. We're not quite at that point yet with the Vaporflys, but close."</p><p>In 2009, the International Swimming Federation banned all full-body polyurethane suits, including the LZR.</p><p>But when asked last year whether the <a href="https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=16331&amp;awinaffid=257137&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nike.com%2Ft%2Fvaporfly-4-flyknit-running-shoe-v7G3FB&amp;clickref=1573241283288a6zgihyml" rel="nofollow">Nike Vaporfly 4%</a> shoes confer an advantage, Kamworor said, "I don't think that the shoe is a factor."</p><p>"Provided that you are prepared, that you are training hard, you can run with any kind of shoe. So the shoe is not a disadvantage to other people," he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq2uBXNjTBI">said in a press conference</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>But Burns and Barnes both said they don't think the recent running records, as well as Kipchoge's sub-2-hour marathon, would have been possible in different footwear.</p><p>Nor does Mary Wittenberg, the former New York Road Runners president.</p><p>"I actually think we're going to have asterisks on all the results that are like AV and BV - Before Vaporfly," she told <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/former-nyc-marathon-leader-talks-doping-shoes-and-world-records-11572529203?emailToken=8cc28f204f23f338d1d2cf60f13078edWKny0yc2my+Z3fZ08+JVyWL+iD7ADKO6w2UkJcE46ou96lAyY647phwczntQ5NmSfXfQBQmhajJghEQq3iX4Ap5LO0DoXvWtY18ESwxrBL5TpI6Y0TW7atSmWeLiT3RT&amp;reflink=article_email_share" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a> before the New York marathon.</p><section data-track-content="" data-post-type="post"><h2>Should the IAAF regulate running shoes? </h2><p>Many runners sponsored by other shoe companies would like to see the IAAF lay down additional rules about permissible shoes. Sara Hall, an Asics-sponsored runner and Ryan Hall's wife, <a href="https://www.outsideonline.com/2404817/elite-marathoners-nike-vaporfly-debate">told Outside Online</a> that because of the shoes, "it's hard to really just celebrate performances at face value right now." </p><p>"I think it would help to have some limits, just like other sports have, like swimming, or triathlon, or cycling," she added. "They all have limits of the gear. So I think that would help create more of an even playing field."</p><p>According to Burns, one option for the IAAF could be to limit how thick a shoe's midsole can be - he proposed this in <a href="https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2019/10/18/bjsports-2018-100480.info">an October paper</a>. </p><p>"As we allow that height limit to go greater and greater, more and more of that energy recycling is being done by the shoe, so the performances are less and less human," he said.</p><p>Current Vaporfly models have 1.4 inch-thick soles, whereas midsoles of other racing shoes generally hover around 1 inch, Burns noted. So in his paper, he suggested capping thickness at 1 inch.</p><p>That kind of limit, Burns said, "would define the space on a runner that can be a 'shoe,' and allow companies to innovate within that space."</p><p>But such a rule would disqualify Vaporflys.</p><p>"I think we need to draw a line," Burns said. " If I got to draw the line, I would draw it so as to preserve the performances of the past 40 years at the cost of the last three years."</p></section>

Nike's controversial Vaporfly shoes are helping runners set new records, but some think it's 'technology doping.' Here's how they work.

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></div></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Fishing from a stand-up paddle board can be a wobbly, if not disastrous affair, but <a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bōte's Rackham AeroBōte stand-up paddle board ($1,699)</a> is stable as can be.</li><li>It's also inflatable, so transporting it in your car is a cinch, as is checking it onto a flight</li><li>I tested one out on the grass flats and channels of the Florida Keys while fly fishing, free diving, and lazing, and it's my new favorite fishing SUP (stand-up paddle board).</li></ul><p>Fishing from a stand-up paddle board (or "SUP") can be highly productive: You're stealthier, you don't draw nearly as much water as you would in a skiff (or even most kayaks), which means you're able to work your way into skinnier water, and you're kept high and dry, as opposed to wading.</p><p>But then, it can also be something of a challenge: Wind and swell are often keeping your balance in check, anchoring (or sitting still) is a chore that either requires a lot of paddling or an actual anchor and something to fix it to, and then there's all your gear, which, at any moment, could end up in the drink.</p><p>I've always been cautious when heading out fishing on a SUP. I only bring one fishing rod, a small box of flies, a knife that I keep strapped to me, and maybe I'll bring a water bottle, but only if there's mesh or bungee netting to hold it in place. Otherwise, Keeping tabs on both a water bottle and a fly rod (or balancing them) while trying to paddle gets beyond cumbersome.</p><p>There <em>are</em> DIY/jury-rigging solutions to all of this. A pair of bungee cords linked together can make a strap or two, but you have to wrap them around the underside of the board, which creates drag and costs you speed. It's also not the sturdiest thing in the world. You could drill holes into your board, too, but that takes a degree of expertise (and a time commitment) that many of us don't have. It can also get messy, and ugly.</p><p>So, there I am, down in the Florida Keys, enduring my normal struggles with outfitting a regular SUP for fishing, when a couple showed up in the rental property next door and inflated their <a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bōte Rackham</a> inflatable paddleboard. "What's that?" I asked, cunningly (I knew full well what it was).</p><p>They explained, excitedly, and invited me to try it out. I politely declined, but when they brought out a pitcher of margaritas well before what most of us would deem happy hour (no judgments), I figured I was safe to steal the thing for a while.</p><p>I took it for a quick paddle to see how it handled, and how comfortable I was with bringing two fly rods, snorkeling gear, and a camera out with me, and my apprehensions were quickly assuaged. I found that I could confidently stand right on the rails (edges), rock back and forth, perch on the nose, strap all my gear down securely, and, if a bit of swell or boat wake challenged me, there was the grab rail, ever-ready and shockingly sturdy, considering that it's only resting in two ports on the deck of an inflatable paddleboard.</p><p>I loaded the board with everything I needed (and more) quickly, and surprisingly tidily. (Editor's note: Owen is not, by nature, tidy.)</p><p>Off I went, over the bounding main, as it were.</p><h2>Specs</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></div></div></div></p><p>First of all, at a lengthy 12 feet, 4 inches, this SUP really is bordering on a boat, and nearly as stable as one (much more so than a kayak or canoe). The only way I fell off was by trying to navigate around the lean post, which was a stupid thing to do, frankly. But trial by fire, right?</p><p>Accessorizing the <a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rackham</a> ends only with your imagination. There are D-rings, bungees, and Velcro galore. Conveniently placed handles make portages (and dragging it up the beach) a breeze, while an airplane-ready storage bag cinches the whole thing down so you can take it just about anywhere.</p><p>The non-slip deck is a no-brainer, but I must add that it feels notably pleasant under bare feet, and the optional lean post makes for a surprisingly comfortable full day on the water. The <a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rackham</a> is also cooler- or bucket-ready, so you can take a seat, too. I opted to leave mine on the beach for no good reason at all, other than that I thought I'd want the open deck space. In the end, there was plenty, and it would have not only been nice to have a seat but a place to stash and keep a few drinks and snacks chilled.</p><p>The lean post is also a nice addition to have underway. It stores fishing rods, and, again, helps you take a little load off while you're paddling or poling along.</p><p>The <a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rackham</a> comes with an adjustable three-piece paddle, which is lightweight and quickly stores in a paddle sheath near the bow for getting your hands free quickly, which I loved when spotting a fish. I don't know how many times I've bent down or turned around to drop my paddle only to spook the fish I was stalking with the loud clank of it hitting the rails of a kayak or the deck of a SUP. This feature should not go overlooked.</p><p>Nor should the push pole, which boaters in shallow water use to push along in lieu of a paddle. The brand calls it a "Sandspear" (though keep in mind that it's not included). I'd never thought that a push pole would make all that much sense with a paddleboard, but cruising the sand and grass flats made it pretty clear that I could cover twice as much water with far more stealth than with a paddle. You can also add on a little sheath for the push pole </p><p>So much of the above rings up a cringe-worthy price tag, I know. But keep in mind that boats are far more expensive, and if you want a functional, portable, and comfortable fishing SUP, it's going to cost you one way or another, especially if you're not building it yourself. The advantage here is that it's still the fraction of a flats boat, and you can kit it out as you go along, when and where your budget allows. Stripped down, it's still a fun and fishable board, and you'll enjoy the little improvements you make along the way all that much more.</p><h2>On the water</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></div></div></div></p><p>Getting off of the beach, my first appreciation of the way the <a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rackham AeroBōte</a> is outfitted is the fact that it accommodates both a <a href="http://moosejaw.evyy.net/c/196318/185854/1676?subId1=biip_051519_bote-sup-review&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.moosejaw.com%2Fproduct%2Fbote-sand-spear-8ft-pole_10373395" target="_blank" rel="noopener">push pole</a> (pictured above, sold separately) like any good flats skiff would, <em>and</em> a <a href="http://moosejaw.evyy.net/c/196318/185854/1676?subId1=biip_051519_bote-sup-review&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.moosejaw.com%2Fproduct%2Fbote-axe-cm-pro-three-piece-paddle_10376620" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paddle</a> (included). Often when we're in shallow water, it's much easier and quicker to get where we're going by poling along, rather than paddling. It's also the tool you use to stop the board when you want to hold your position, and there are several points on the board so that you can position yourself based on the wind, tide, and/or fish you're eying.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></div></div></div></p><p>The <a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rackham AeroBōte</a> is also highly customizable. There are plenty of velcro tabs and D-rings around the boat to secure most anything that needs securing. The brand also sells a matching bucket cooler that works well as a seat, or you could fit in your own little hard cooler or bucket just the same.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></div></div></div></p><p>The deck pad is made with a grippy, multi-textured foam which the brand calls BVA, which felt very similar to EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) foam. At any rate, I never slipped once, even when I got a bit of water onboard.</p><p>And yes, I'm comfortably seated here; with a cushion, or better yet with your life jacket on (as it always out to be), the lean post also makes for a great backrest when it comes time to take a load off and give your arm a break from casting. Still, a bucket or cooler might've been nicer. Then again, it was nice having my legs and feet stretched out.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></div></div></div></p><p>Later on in the day, I started spotting lobsters in the grass. Poling along in search of bonefish, whenever I spotted a pair of antennas, I could jab the pole into the sand and slide my mask on with a couple of quick motions, slip into the water, and approach my prey. And, thanks to the silence of the board and a pole to hold me in place instead of a clanging metal anchor, the poor little buggers were none the wiser.</p><p>Sight-fishing for bonefish quickly turned into something of an aqueous easter egg hunt, and before long, I had dinner for myself <em>and </em>the family. By this point, I was really starting to like the <a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rackham</a>, for many obvious reasons. And then some pesky little voice began to pounder into one of my ears: "<em>Would those drunken (if kind) souls who lent it to me ever notice if it went missing?"</em></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></div></div></div></p><p>No, no, I brought it back after all.</p><h2>The bottom line</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></div></div></div></p><p>Sure, a full-sized skiff can accommodate more than one person, and the <a href="https://amzn.to/2VZeh4X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rackham AeroBōte</a> isn't cheap, but if you like to fish, and you live anywhere near a good, calm fishing hole, fresh or salt, there's nothing better for your skinny (or backwater) adventuring.
