The uneasy relations between Rajya Sabha Chairman and <keyword id="19895395" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Opposition" source="keywords">Opposition</keyword> parties once again surfaced on Thursday, as Jagdeep <keyword id="19895818" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dhankhar" source="keywords">Dhankhar</keyword> left the House after heated clashes with TMC leader and some other Opposition MPs who were not permitted to raise the issue of disqualification of <keyword id="2449644" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinesh-Phogat" source="Orion">Vinesh Phogat</keyword> from the Paris Olympics. Trouble started in the morning session when Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge sought to raise the Phogat disqualification issue but Chairman Dhankhar did not allow it. This followed an angry exchange between the Chair and TMC leader Derek O'Brien. "It is an important issue. It is not an issue of a particular individual," Kharge said soon after the listed papers were tabled in the House. He wanted to know "who is behind" the disqualification. However, Dhankhar did not allow Kharge to raise the issue and went ahead with the scheduled Zero Hour listings. In the meantime, Derek O'Brien stood up to raise his point, but could not be heard because of uproar in the House. To this Dhankar cautioned the TMC member, saying "You are shouting at the Chair. Your conduct is ugliest in the House. I condemn your actions. Next time I will show you the door". As uproar continued, Opposition parties staged a walkout. "They (Opposition) think they are all wise. They think they are the only ones whose hearts are bleeding. The entire nation is in pain because of our girl. Entire nation is feeling the pain from the President to the Prime Minister to myself and many more. Everyone is sharing that situation, but to... politicize it is the greatest disrespect to that girl. That girl has a long way to go," Dhankhar said. Leader of the House and BJP president J P Nadda also condemned the behaviour of Opposition members towards the Chair and also accused the Congress party of politicising the Phogat disqualification issue. "Opposition does not have a solid issue to discuss," he said. Nadda emphasised the whole country is behind Phogat and even the Prime Minister has described the wrestler as 'champion of champions'. After Nadda spoke, Dhankhar expressed his anguish on the conduct of Opposition members and left the House saying he was not in a position to remain in the House for the time being. Before leaving the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar said the behaviour of the Opposition members has crossed all limits by creating anarchy in the House and disrespecting the prestige of the Chair. "They are not challenging me. They are challenging the post of the Chairman. And they are challenging the Chair, as they think that the person who is sitting on this Chair is not capable," he said. Dhankhar rued that he did not get the desired support from the House despite making all efforts. "I am not running away from the oath. But what I have seen today, the way a member has behaved, the way the Opposition bench has conducted, I am not finding myself in a position to sit here for sometime," Dhankar said, adding he was leaving the House "with a heavy heart". After Dhankhar left the House, Deputy Chairman Harivansh chaired the Zero Hour proceedings. Dhankhar later chaired the Question Hour. After returning to the Chair, he said when a scene is created in the House and it becomes the epicentre of disruption for the entire nation, then it is a bounden duty to sometimes take a tough decision. "I left my seat to introspect. Having witnessed (the scene)... which I found was unprecedented, and indigestible," Dhankhar said, adding he would be "walking away from the oath" if he does not take tough decisions. The Chairman also informed that he has called a meeting of floor leaders at 1:30 PM to discuss the matter. Uproar over Phogat issue in RS: Opposition walks out, Chairman Dhankhar leaves House briefly

It is disheartening to see the Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, use the Rs. 70.45575 lakhs spent on her as a deflection. This amount is not an asset of the BJP; Phogat is a national asset," the Congress MP said in his letter. Condemning Mandaviya's statement, Tagore urged the government to address the issue with the seriousness it deserves. "We condemn the Minister's insensitive statement and urge the government to address this issue with the seriousness it deserves. Our athletes deserve genuine support, not mere financial figures. We call for the withdrawal of ministers' statements and a more respectful approach to our sportspeople's challenges," he said. This comes after Mandaviya in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday said that Phogat was provided with all possible financial assistance by the Indian government. "As far as her preparations and support are concerned, the Indian government gave her all possible assistance according to her needs. She was provided with Hungary's famous coach Woller Akos and physio Ashwini Patil who were always present with her. For the Olympics, personal assistance, including various sparring partners and strength and conditioning specialists was also provided, including her coach Woller Akos, Wayne Patrick Lombard, a strength and conditioning specialist, Ashwini Jeewan Patil, her physiotherapist, Mayank Singh Garia, a strength and conditioning specialist, Shubham and Arvind, her sparring partners. A total of Rs 70,45,775 was provided to Phogat for the Olympics," the Sports Minister said. Meanwhile, <keyword id="20115485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harish-Salve" source="keywords">Harish Salve</keyword>, senior Advocate, will represent the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing on Friday, regarding the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Paris Olympics. Salve's expertise will be crucial in addressing the legal and procedural aspects of the dispute. Salve, former Solicitor General of India and King's Counsel, confirmed to that he has been engaged by the IOA to represent Phogat at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics final, Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling on Thursday. In an emotional post on X, Phogat expressed her sense of defeat and gratitude, stating, "Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. All the three major parties — Bharatiya Janata Party, Aam Aadmi Party, and Congress — together fielded 24 female candidates, <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/24-in-2020-19-in-2015-more-women-contesting-delhi-assembly-election-year-1639642-2020-01-24">according to India Today.</a> Congress has the highest share of women candidates at 10, followed by AAP which fielded nine candidates and BJP too gave tickets to five. But the parties have just about breached the reservation as recommended in the Women’s reservation Bill 2008. Though the bill hasn’t passed, several parties tried to keep up with its recommendations of reserving 33% of the candidature to women. A bill which sought one-third reservation for women in the lower house of Parliament and all state assemblies — was passed by Rajya Sabha in 2010. This was stalled after it failed to get votes in the Lok Sabha. It has remained in the pending pile ever since. In Lok Sabha Election 2019, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) also promised that they would allocate at least a third of tickets to women. Whereas, BJP and Congress failed to reserve seats for women in both Lok Sabha and state assembly though it was a part of their manifestos. The BJP fielded 12% women whereas Congress fielded 13.1% in the Lok Sabha election held last May.
