Taking a step towards making India a manufacturing hub, <keyword id="168792" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Foxconn-Technology-Group">Foxconn Technology Group</keyword> has started manufacturing smartphones at its new plant in Andhra Pradesh for China's <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> and US phone brand InFocus. Vincent WH Tong, chairman of FIH Mobile, Foxconn's phone manufacturing unit, told ET that the company will ramp up the production capacity of the plant, located in the state's 7,000-acre <keyword id="6361721" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sri-City">Sri City</keyword> special economic zone, and will bring it at par with its manufacturing units in other countries. 

	"It (manufacturing) has just started and is moving as we speak. Actually, compared to our capacities elsewhere, it is not that big a scale. In the long run, we intend to grow the facility further," he said. 
 

	The chairman declined to comment on the quantity of phones being manufactured from the factory for Xiaomi and InFocus. 
 

	ET had reported in its June 24 edition that the Sri City unit - called Rising Star - will make about 10,000 phones a day, which is small compared with Foxconn's much larger units in China. The plant has been set up at an investment of Rs 77 crore. 
 

	Tong said the company is talking to multiple customers to make phones from the same facility, without sharing names of possible clients. 
 

	Chinese smartphone leader Xiaomi has publicly shared its plans to make phones in the country, but India head Manu Jain said the company is still finalising its manufacturing plans, when asked whether it was getting smartphones made from Foxconn's new unit. 
 US-based InFocus started selling its M330 model priced at Rs 9,999 in India in March through an exclusive partnership with <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>. Foxconn, the maker of iPhones and iPads for <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword> and Kindles for <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, plans to create at least a million jobs by setting up 10-12 manufacturing facilities in India by 2020, chairman Terry Gou said during a recent visit.

Foxconn kicks off manufacturing smartphones in its Indian plant

Taiwanese electronics maker <keyword id="168792" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Foxconn-Technology-Group">Foxconn Technology Group</keyword> is looking to invest in Indian startups and is gaining deep insight into Indian startup ecosystem. 
 For this, <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal are helping the Taiwanese electronics maker to scout for the best deals in the <keyword id="2902522" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="indian-startup-market">Indian startup market</keyword>. 
 
Over a dozen Indian startups met Wen-Hsin (Vincent) Tong, Chairman and Director of investments at FIH Mobile Limited, an investment arm of Foxconn, at the New Delhi office of Snapdeal recently, according to two people with direct knowledge of the initiative. 
 
The meetings were designed as fact-finding missions and were set up for Foxconn to gain a deeper insight in one of the world's most dynamic startup hubs. 
 
"(However) they could potentially lead to investments in these ventures," said the sources who briefed Economic Times on the developments. 
 
Though names of the startups were not known but sources told ET that among those present were several mobile-based ventures that offer on-demand services. "All the startups who met (Tong and Bahl) have raised significant amounts of venture capital funding and several of them are already in talks for a new round of equity financing," one of the persons quoted above told the financial daily. 
 
Foxconn, however, declined to confirm the meetings. 
 
"As a matter of company policy, we do not comment on rumours or speculation. As we have stated in the past, we would consider investments in India if they made commercial sense," a Foxconn technology group spokesperson said in an emailed reply to ET's questionnaire. 
 
Snapdeal also declined to comment on the developments. Foxconn's interest comes at a time when several Asian corporate behemoths are looking to invest in consumer-focused technology startups. 
 
Earlier this month ET had reported that Foxconn was one of the frontrunners to invest in Jasper Infotech, which owns and operates Snapdeal.com. 
The Taiwanese manufacturing giant is a contract manufacturer for a number of iconic brands, including Apple, Amazon, Sony and Microsoft. 
 
Strategic investors scouting for investments in India have increased over the last two years. Apart from South Africa's Naspers, which is an investor in India's biggest e-Commerce company Flipkart, others such as SoftBank have promised to invest close to $10 billion in the country.

Snapdeal founders are helping Taiwanese company to get best deals in Indian startups

Taiwanese multinational <keyword id="6380512" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="electronics">electronics</keyword> manufacturing company, <keyword id="6354671" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Foxconn">Foxconn</keyword> and <keyword id="6367820" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Adani-Group">Adani Group</keyword> might come together to establish at least four electronics manufacturing facilities in India, sources told TOI. 

	Earlier this month, top executives of Foxconn have visited Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat to survey possible sites to set up manufacturing plants. 
 

	The Taiwanese company is best known for making Apple devices. 
 Sources in the Karnataka government told TOI that Vincent Tong Wen-Hsin, chairman and director of investments at FIH (Foxconn International Holdings) Mobile, and <keyword id="2920558" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Calvin-Chih">Calvin Chih</keyword>, CEO of the company, had discussed the matter with the government. 

	"It could become a $5-billion investment. They visited some other states too. We are hoping that Karnataka's talent pool and fiscal incentives would make them decide to locate a facility here," a government official, who did not want to be named, told the daily. 
 When contacted, <keyword id="224639" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pranav-Adani">Pranav Adani</keyword>, director in <keyword id="118623" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Adani-Enterprises">Adani Enterprises</keyword> - the flagship company of the Adani Group - and nephew of Adani Group founder <keyword id="111343" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gautam-Adani">Gautam Adani</keyword>, told TOI he had nothing to say. The Ahmedabad-based group is a multinational conglomerate with interests in commodities, logistics, agribusiness and energy. 

	In May, Foxconn group chairman Terry Gou told Reuters that the group was looking to develop 10-12 facilities in India, including factories and data centres by 2020. "A lot of our customers, especially Chinese customers, need us to manufacture ... in India, to make phones, tablets, TVs, as soon as possible," Gou had said. 
 

	A Karnataka government official said: "We are talking to Foxconn almost every week to get them to Karnataka. Under our mega projects policy, we can tailor-make incentives for them."
 

	Foxconn has already started working on a small facility in Andhra Pradesh’s Sri City that is likely to make around 10,000 phones a day, largely for Chinese brand Xiaomi. 
 In China, Foxconn makes phones for a number of global brands, including Apple, <keyword id="11148" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Motorola">Motorola</keyword>, Huawei, <keyword id="6354356" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BlackBerry">BlackBerry</keyword>, and Sony. The company is keen to manufacture in India for Indian and global brands.
