Technology brand OnePlus on Monday announced to further deepen its partnership with <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> with introducing a budget-friendly <keyword id="169786" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-TV">Smart TV</keyword> portfolio. Industry body <keyword id="166814" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Chamber-of-Commerce">Indian Chamber of Commerce</keyword> (ICC) on Friday demanded higher <keyword id="118132" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Interest-subvention">interest subvention</keyword> for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) on loans to boost employment generation in the country. The city-headquartered chamber in its budget demand also called for simplification of personal taxation by lowering tax rates for greater compliance. "The two per cent interest subvention scheme on loans has truly supported Indian MSMEs. We would like to propose that the scheme be further extended with enhanced coverage. We request the government to consider 3-4 per cent interest subvention to the extent of ₹3 crore against the earlier ₹1 crore," ICC president <keyword id="32299" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vikas-Agarwal">Vikas Agarwal</keyword> said. Since a key agenda of the interest subvention scheme for these enterprises is to get them on-board the GST network, the relaxation will help them come under the ambit of the indirect tax regime, he said. Speaking about individual tax, ICC also said it is necessary to reduce the personal tax rates for individuals so that there is a degree of equity and fairness in relation to structuring decisions. Dividend tax should also be capped at 15 per cent down from 20 per cent for resident assesses as well, Agarwal said. While China continues to be the global leader, India had an estimated 158 million devices shipped to the country in 2019. And most of this growth is being driven by Chinese smartphone makers including Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo and Oppo, amongst others. To understand the opportunity that India presents to smartphone makers now, considering the sheer size of the market and an increase in the number of people wanting to own more premium phones, we recently caught up with Vikas Agarwal, General Manager, OnePlus India. Agarwal spoke to us about what has worked in the brand’s favor in the last few years, how it has been able to woo audiences in an already cluttered market and how it wants to grow its offline presence substantially in the next few quarters to find new customers. OnePlus’ India story so far When OnePlus launched in India around five years back, it did not use any high-decibel campaign. Instead, it relied completely on word-of-mouth. Five years since, the strategy has paid off well for the brand, which has now started coming up with campaigns, all of which are made in-house. Globally, Robert Downey Jr. is the face of the brand. In terms of its market share, the brand has managed to capture the lion’s share in the premium segment. Data from the Counterpoint Research revealed that OnePlus was one of the fastest-growing smartphone brands in India in 2019, with around 29% growth in market share. “When we launched in India, we had thought it will take us time to establish ourselves here. We had thought it will take us time to build an interest in the brand but eventually we will have an opportunity as we had entered early. However the success we have received and the response we’ve got from users has been phenomenal and in less than five years we’ve already emerged as the biggest brand in the premium segment. We have also helped the industry grow at a faster pace,” says Agarwal who also shares that globally almost one-third of the brand’s business comes from India, making it the biggest market for the brand. When asked what are the factors that led an otherwise unknown brand to come to India and capture the market the way it did, Agarwal says it is the brand’s focus on customer centricity that helped it crack the code. The brand, shares Agarwal, has always prioritized customer preferences and expectations. “Our focus on the Indian market from the very beginning has helped us grow here. Our business strategy is to focus on releasing only one product every year. We also refrained from diversifying our brand into multiple channels in the beginning. Being present only on online channels helped us grow very efficiently. Our continued focus on engaging with the community and our product obsession is what has led us here today,” he shares. Why OnePlus is focusing on offline expansion For the first three years, the brand was only present online. It was also getting by with minimal marketing. The brand created a loyal following for itself through a referral program and a lot of excitement around the brand was built primarily through word-of-mouth. In the last few years, the brand has also invested on Digital. However, considering the limitation of digital channels, the brand is now looking at expanding its presence offline, to reach out to a newer set of consumers. The brand already has opened 30 stores in top cities. “This year we’re looking our presence to about 100 stores in top 50 cities. We want our offline stores to be destinations where consumers discover our products and know more about the brand. This will also help us in creating awareness and build the consumer’s confidence and trust in us which will eventually translate into loyalty and commitment for the brand,” he explains. He also shares that the brand will cover all Tier I cities and look at some Tier II cities. Why OnePlus continues to shy away from roping in an ad agency So far, most of OnePlus’ campaigns have been executed in-house. Despite working with media agencies, the brand interestingly has never had an ad agency on retainer. When asked why, Agarwal says, “We have a team which is really creative and very passionate about the brand. We usually take our team’s feedback and more often than not, our team’s ideas are quite effective and appealing because they understand the brand better than most of the agencies and partners. We try to explore all opportunities and pick the best ideas.” He also adds that the brand is open to working with an agency in the future but it will also continue to explore ideas from the in-house team. Evolution of OnePlus’ marketing strategy The core of the brand’s marketing strategy is still word-of-mouth, says Agarwal. Initially, the phones could be bought through invites and later the brand moved to digital channels. In recent times, the brand has also started exploring traditional mediums and celebrity associations with an aim of reaching out to a larger audience. “Our core focus remains on our existing community and that is where a majority of our media investments are going. Recently, we organized the OnePlus music festival to give something back to our OnePlus community. While it was a huge success, we are still figuring out if we want to make this an annual event,” he adds. He further states that India is one of the most important markets for the company from a global perspective. “India is our most important market and comes first in terms of our brand strategy. We are probably one of the only brands that always launches its products simultaneously in India. We also prioritize India over other regions, even in terms of supply,” he says. From an investment perspective, OnePlus has the biggest team in India outside of its headquarters. With a current strength of 400 members, the brand plans to scale up to a 1000 member team in the next three years. Agarwal shares that the brand will continue to focus on community-focused initiatives and its recently launched Red Cable Club is a step in that direction.

The brands growth was driven by the launch of <keyword id="6663904" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="OnePlus-7">OnePlus 7</keyword> and OnePlus 7 Pro in the country during the second quarter of 2019, according to <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/oneplus-widens-lead-apple-samsung-oneplus-7-launch-indian-premium-segment-q2-2019/" data-type="tilCustomLink">Counterpoint Research.</a> It is the highest market share that Chinese smartphone maker has ever had in the country. It's also the first time that OnePlus managed to break into the elite club of the 'ultra premium segment'. It has gained a sizeable market share in the category which includes phones that cost upwards of ₹45,000 with the launch of the OnePlus 7 Pro. "OnePlus has more than 60% market share in the ₹30,000 - ₹45,000 segment and with the launch of OnePlus 7 Pro, we have a 26% market share in the ₹45,0000 plus segment. Collectively we have 42% market share overall, with a clear lead in ₹30,000 - ₹45,000 segment," <keyword id="32299" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vikas-Agarwal">Vikas Agarwal</keyword>, the General Manager of <keyword id="2613562" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="OnePlus-India">OnePlus India</keyword> told Business Insider India.

 Samsung slipped to 22% market share in the segment registering an yearly drop in shipments of 16% and now is on par with Apple at 21% market share. The premium sector, as a whole, registered a yearly growth rate of 33% with users have more options in the premium segment than in any other quarter. Regaining the lead from Samsung Samsung has led the premium smartphone segment last quarter after launching the Samsung S10 Plus. The South Korean major tends to rule in the first quarter as it normally launches a flagship device around that time. Sales are generally slow for most premium brands in the first quarter of the year. Samsung is an exception to the trend since it typically launches its premium flagship device right before. "There's always a spike in demand whenever you have a new product launch. It's why the market share changes in the premium segment every quarter," says Agarwal. As Samsung made its phones cheaper, OnePlus launched a phone that was expensive tilting the balance in the segment. "A lot of users have not been using OnePlus despite them wanting to but we do not have a product in the segment with kind of specifications that they're looking for. So, this year we decided to launch an ultra premium product that caters to those users who want to have a more premium experience," explains Agarwal. Diversifying the variants of its device allowed OnePlus to go from zero market share in Q1 2019 to 26% share in the ultra premium segment in a mere three months. Upcoming launches "Currently, we don't see the need to have more premium devices. If you see the overall market, it's still less than 5%. Within this 5%, we now have devices that cater to the top 2% and the next 3%," shares Agarwal. OnePlus has no plans to develop more premium smartphones and no plans to expand into other segments either. "OnePlus has always remained focused on the premium segment because we feel have a better understanding of the market in terms of customer expectations," shared Agarwal. The 'very young company' doesn't have the resources to support multiple product lines. So, even though OnePlus won't be expanding its portfolio with new smartphones — it still has plans to launch new products. "One of the things that we're doing is the Smart TV. We see a huge opportunity in the Smart TV space. Based on the trends that we've observed, a lot of users want to consume entertainment on smart devices," says Agarwal. Despite the launch two devices in the first half of 2019, it's still likely that we're going to see a Diwali launch by OnePlus of upgraded variants of the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro.

OnePlus smartphone sales in India are nearly double that of Apple and Samsung

Featuring a 5.5-inch 1080p Optic AMOLED display, it comes up with a 16MP rear camera, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor along with company's custom OxygenOS. It would be available in two colour variants, Graphite and Soft Gold, and would feature 64GB of in-built storage and NFC connectivity. 
 
Sporting dual nano SIM card support, the smartphone also comes with an offer for its customers who are the subscribers of Idea cellular, offering them 'double data' for 12 months. Other than this, users will also get 12 months of ad-free Saavn pro subscription and accidental damage coverage through the 'OnePlus Care app' powered by Servify.

It’s soon climbing up at no. 2 position in terms of sales and becoming India’s largest home-grown manufacturer of mobile phones, Micromax is keen on selling a 25% stake to a consortium led by Ant <keyword id="6354241" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Financial-Services">Financial Services</keyword> Group, China's leading online financial services company that owns Alipay. As per a news report by The Economic Times, Micromax has been valued at around $4-5 billion (approximatelyRs 24,000-30,000 crore). 
 The ET report states, Alipay, China's top online payment solution company and part of the <keyword id="163405" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba-Group">Alibaba Group</keyword>, is bringing in two to three partners. The proposed deal would see both infusion of capital and exits, partial or total, by existing investors, said the people quoted earlier. An exit will give existing investors significant returns on their investments, sources known to the ET has confirmed. 
 
TA Associates, for instance, currently owns 15% in Micromax, for which it paid around Rs 225 crore five years ago when the company was valued at around Rs 1,500 crore. 
 However, bringing the deal to fruition would partly depend on resolving differences that are said to have cropped up between the company's promoters and its <keyword id="6364480" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chairman">chairman</keyword> Sanjay Kapoor, a former <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword> of Bharti Airtel's Indian business, over the company's future direction. The four founder promoters — Rahul Sharma, Rajesh Agarwal, Sumeet Kumar and Vikas Jain — own a little less than 80% of the company. 
 
A person having knowledge of the deal confirmed that the "new guard", mainly Kapoor, feels that Micromax should focus mainly on online sales, but the promoters differ, noting that 70% of its revenue still comes from offline, or traditional retail channels. "There are also disagreements over the positioning of the phones and technology adoption. Kapoor believes Micromax should increase its average selling price while promoters feel there is still immense potential in the mass market," one of the people aware of the fact told the financial daily. Despite the differences the deal with Ant Financial Services is on track, said the people cited above. 
 
While Alipay and Micromax have declined to comment, the latter, in an emailed statement on behalf of the company, its promoters and the chairman, added that Kapoor continues to be its chairman and an integral part of the company. 
 One of the people aware of the development has said, to compete with market leader <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> and China’s fast growing Xiaomi, the Indian phone makers need something in unique like Alipay to survive the cut-throat competition.

The premium smartphone brand gained momentum in Q3 following the launch of <keyword id="9374259" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="oneplus-nord">OnePlus Nord</keyword> in July at a starting price of Rs 24,999. The launch of OnePlus Nord marked the company's entry into the upper mid-tier smartphone segment in India -- Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000. According to the Counterpoint Research report, OnePlus Nord now stands as the top selling smartphone in this segment. Overall, OnePlus is now the market leader in the affordable premium segment of the smartphone market in India -- Rs 30,000-Rs 45,000. "After a successful Q2 2020, the OnePlus 8 sales drove the brand's success in the affordable premium smartphone segment in India," Vikas Agarwal, General Manager of OnePlus India, told IANS. "This positive growth momentum of the brand was also fueled by OnePlus' strong commitment to the Indian market and the Make in India program, while delivering on offering high-quality products to users across more accessible price segments," Agarwal said. OnePlus commenced its smartphone manufacturing efforts in February 2018. The company said that it is manufacturing the OnePlus Nord as well as the OnePlus 8 series devices in India. In addition, the brand's India R&amp;D team had also played a crucial role in leading the software development efforts for both the OnePlus Nord as well as the OnePlus 8 series, including 5G testing efforts. OnePlus said it has over 5,000 offline stores including partnered stores across India.
