Vijender Singh conquered the amateur boxing arena and now all eyes are set on him once again to see how India’s ace boxer will fair in professional boxing as he makes his debut on Saturday (October 10). 
 
At the moment when anxiety and frenzy is taking over boxing fans in India, Singh is as cool as a cucumber and is just focussing on the game. 
 
In an exclusive interview to Business Insider, Singh, who is in Manchester, said this is the best time of his life and currently he is excited and focussed for his pro-boxing debut. 
 
“I have mixed feelings actually. There is no pressure on me, it’s been a little over a month now that I have been training and I am geared up for my pro debut. There is, of course, a responsibility on me but at present I want to stay focussed as I have been waiting for this moment for quite sometime now,” said 29-year-old Singh. 
 
Singh, who was expected to represent India in 2016 Rio Olympics, had announced his plans to turn professional in June and signed a multi-year promotional agreement with Queensberry Promotions. 
 
When asked what drove him to take the decision, the boxer from Bhiwani said, “I only know boxing and the sport is my life. Apart from boxing, I don’t know anything. I have won every prestigious medal in amateur boxing and in pro also I will leave a mark. I want to perform at a global level and work hard and box hard.” 
 
In his pro debut, Singh will fight England’s Sonny Whiting, who has an overall record of 2-1 in pro boxing and has claimed he will put Singh through hell. 
 
To this, Singh said, “Indian boxers are the best and he will get to see that on Saturday. I just want to wish him good luck and we will see who wins. I am going to box hard.” 
 
Singh has been training under coach Lee Beard along with three others, Jack Catterall, Adrian Gonzalez and Jimmy Kelly. 
 
Talking about challenges he’s been facing in the UK, Singh said it’s been a month only and he is still adjusting. 
 
“Everything is new here. New people, new fellow boxers, new trainers and there is no Indian. There is a sea change. Training is also difficult, language and press conferences are also not so easy. So, I am still adjusting here,” he said. 
 
Singh is working hard to shine out in his pro career and said there was no shortcut to hard work. 
 
The boxing match titled as ‘World War III’ will be telecasted live and exclusive on Sony Six at 10.20 pm IST. 
 
“I am happy that my match will be telecasted and cheers in India will be heard till Manchester,” added Singh. 
 
Asked if he would support other Indian boxers to turn pro, Singh said, “I will definitely support them. If my Indian boxers need anything, I am here for them. I will give my unconditional support and full guidance.” 
 
The set of rules in Amateur are different from pro. In pro-boxing, there is no mercy, among other rules.

 This feat comes after Singh managed to defeat former WBC European champion <keyword id="3394030" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kerry-Hope">Kerry Hope</keyword> in a gruelling 10-round contest to clinch the <keyword id="3540267" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Asia-Pacific-super-middleweight-champion">Asia Pacific super middleweight champion</keyword> in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=delhi&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Delhi </a>last month, which enabled him to enter the rankings. 
 
Additionally, he has also remained unbeaten since turning professional last year, recording seven straight wins. 
 
Singh is a rung below US-based Russian Matt Korobov, who has 26 wins in 27 fights so far and is placed above American star Trevor McCumby, who is also undefeated in the circuit with 22 wins. 
 
Talking to PTI, Singh, who was India’s first <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=olympics&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Olympic</a> and World Championships medal winner said, "It's just the start for me, one day I want to be the No.1 in the world. That's my dream and I am sure I will achieve it.”

Congress announced names of 6 other candidates earlier today with the veteran Sheila Dikshit fighting from the North East Delhi seat, Ajay Maken from New Delhi seat, JP Aggarwal from Chandni Chowk, Arvinder Singh lovely from East Delhi, Mahabal Mishra from West Delhi and Rajesh Lilothia from North West Delhi (SC).

 Vijender Singh is an Indian boxer. He had won the bronze medal in Beijing olympics in 2008. Vijender Singh, born on 29th October 1985, is the current WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight Champion. He won the bronze medal in 2006 Asian games. Vijender Singh has also been awarded with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna - India's highest sporting honour and Padma Shri -- the fourth highest civilian honour.

Ramesh Bidhuri vote share towers over Vijender Singh and Raghav Chadha

<keyword id="11751702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="debutant-lovlina-borgohain">Debutant Lovlina Borgohain</keyword> (69kg) assured India of their first boxing medal at the ongoing Olympic Games when she upstaged former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei to enter the semifinals here on Friday. The 23-year-old Assam boxer prevailed 4-1 to make the last-four where she will square off against reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey, who hammered Anna Lysenko in her quarterfinal bout. Borgohain, a two-time world championship bronze-medallist, displayed tremendous calm in the face of a plucky opponent, who had beaten her in the past. She was aggressive to start with, followed it up with a tremendous counter-attacking game and kept her defence tight in the final three minutes to emerge triumphant. The youngster, who was laid low by COVID-19 last year and missed a training trip to Europe because of it, let out a huge scream after the referee raised her hand, pent up emotions finally getting the better of her. Tokyo Olympics: Lovlina Borgohain assures a boxing medal for India by entering semifinals

One of the important constituencies of the 7 seats of the Delhi union territory, South Delhi attracts the attention of the observers countrywide while the election results are being out. The key candidates in South Delhi Lok Sabha seat are Ramesh Bidhuri of BJP, AAP’s Raghav Chadha and Vijender Singh of the Congress party. The sitting MP from this seat is BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri who is going for reelection from his winning constituency. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Ramesh Bidhuri won this seat by defeating Col. Devinder Sehrawat fielded by the AAP by securing 45.20 percent of votes in this constituency. A total number of 19 candidates are contesting from the South Delhi constituency in 2019 Lok Sabha elections and are now waiting for the results. The number of women candidates fighting from this constituency is 2. Before becoming the MP for the BJP following his victory in the 2014 general elections for the Lok Sabha, Ramesh Bidhuri was a three times MLA from Tughlakabad. Chadha was the national level spokesperson for the AAP who also served as the advisor to the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi. Right from 1989 to 2009, this seat has been a stronghold for the BJP.

Ahead of his swearing-in ceremony today (May 26), Prime Minister-designate <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> visited <keyword id="6362865" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajghat">Rajghat</keyword> and paid homage to the Father of the Nation, <keyword id="6355532" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mahatma-Gandhi">Mahatma Gandhi</keyword>. One look at his long white beard and weak frame, and you could just dismiss <keyword id="3392875" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kaur-Singh">Kaur Singh</keyword> as just another small-time farmer from Punjab. However, this farmer, from Malwa, is the only Indian boxer who has competed against boxing legend <keyword id="84333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Muhammad-Ali">Muhammad Ali</keyword>. 
 
How's that? 
 
The Arjuna awardee Olympian boxed against Ali an exhibition bout in 1980, but has been forgotten now, even as the Rio Olympics are about to begin, and the players could definitely benefit from some motivation. 
 
Kaur Singh, who got the Arjuna Award in 1982 and the Padmashri in 1983, has also recieved the Vishisht Sewa Medal (VSM) in 1988 from the Indian Army. When he was at the peak of his career, he had won the gold medal in the men's heavyweight category for India, in the 1982 Asian Games held inNew Delhi. 
 
However, somewhere along this stupendous journey, he lost his faith in sports, also disallowing his children from taking up sports as a career, maybe because he wanted them to have a safe future, unlike his own. 
 
It was after participating in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984 that ​he hung up his boxing gloves, and now lives in his native village Khanal Khurd in Sangrur, as a farmer tending to his four-acre farm. It's been 34 years that he won the gold medal in the New Delhi Asiad and was promised a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh, but Singh is yet to get the money from the Punjab government. 
 
"This is the biggest drawback behind our failure to get the right talent in sports," he told TNN." "The government needs to stand by sportspersons in their thick and thin," he said. 
 
After he retired from the Army, he returned to his village, where he now eanrs a modest living by farming. Even when he developed a heart condition that needed a stent to be installed in his body, the state government didn't come forward to help the former superstar of Indian boxing. It was the Army that paid the fee for his treatment. "No government ever gave me recognition in the last three decades," he says. 
 It's not only boxing that Singh made his name in. He was given a <keyword id="401558" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sena-Medal">Sena medal</keyword> for his exemplary bravery in the India-Pakistan war in the Barmer sector in Rajasthan. 
 
In his short career, he won six gold medals in the international competitions, including the Asian Games of 1982. 
 
However, he was not always interested in boxing. In fact, it was only after he had joined the army that he came to know of boxing as a sport, taking it up professionally in 1977, competing in the senior national boxing championship held in 1979. He won a gold medal there, in the heavyweight category.

While Vijender Singh remains the only male to have achieved the feat back in the 2008 Beijing Games, women stars MC Mary Kom (London, 2012) and Borgohain (Tokyo, 2021) later added to the overall haul. The six boxers in Paris were handed draws ranging from slippery to difficult on Thursday. Expectations are high from the group and two-time reigning world champion Zareen is at the forefront. The 28-year-old has an uphill task ahead as three of the top medal contenders in the light-flyweight (50kg) division -- China's Wu Yu, Thailand's Chuthamat Raksat and Uzbekistan's Sabina Bobokulov -- are in her half. Zareen opens her campaign against Germany's Maxi Klotzer on Sunday, following which she will meet top-seeded Asian Games and reigning flyweight world champion Wu. If Zareen crosses this hurdle, she may meet either eighth-seeded Asian Games silver medallist Raksat or Bobokulova. Both boxers have defeated the Indian recently. While Raksat got the better of Zareen at the Asian Games last year, Bobokulova beat her at the Strandja Memorial final in February. But the tenacious Hyderabadi would be up for the challenge and if she gets through two rounds, she would become a favourite for gold. The seasoned <keyword id="20499145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amit-Panghal" source="keywords">Amit Panghal</keyword> (51kg) has had a rollercoaster of a ride this Olympic year -- from not being the first choice in his weight class in the national team to making the cut for Paris in the one and only chance he got. Time out from the national team deflated his confidence but he has unfinished business to address, having made a first-round exit in Tokyo. Panghal has received a first-round bye and meets African Games champion, Zambia's Patrick Chinyemba, who had lost to the Indian at the Commonwealth Games, in the round of 16. He faces Asian Games silver medallist Thitisan Panmod of Thailand in the quarterfinals and could potentially meet Rio Olympics and reigning world champion Hassanboy Dusmatov from Uzbekistan or Tokyo bronze-winner Kazakh Saken Bibossinov in the semifinal. The immensely talented Nishant, one of the most consistent performers in the Indian squad, has got the best draw. With a first round bye, the debutant will take on Ecuador's Rodriguez Tenorio in the pre-quarters on Thursday. If Nishant gets past Tenorio, he will meet Mexico's Pan American Games champion Merco Verde in the quarterfinals. He may come up against top seed Sewon Okazawa of Japan in the semifinals. Borgohain will be chasing history, to add to her 69kg bronze. The Assamese boxer, who has bulked up to 75kg, will clash with Norway's Sunniva Hofstad in the first round. However, Borgohain has a tough test waiting for her in the quarterfinal in the form of Chinsese Li Qian, the reigning Asian Games champion and also a two-time Olympic and world medallist. Although Borgohain defeated Qian at the world event last year, she lost in the previous two meetings -- Asian Games and the Czech Grand Prix. A win in the quarters may pit Borgohain against either fifth-seeded world silver medallist Australian Caitlin Parker or Morocco's heavyweight world champion Khadija El-Mardi. Asian Games bronze medallist Preeti Pawar (54kg), competing in her debut Games, will fight with Vietnam's Vo Thi Kim Anh in the first round. A win will take her to the round of 16 where world silver-medallist Yeni Arias of Colombia awaits her. Another debutant Jaismine Lamboria, who has dropped from 60kg to 57kg just ahead of the final qualifier, has got perhaps the most difficult draw. She takes on Tokyo silver-medallist, former world champion Nesthy Petecio of Philippines, in her opening bout. Should she win, Jaismine would be up against France's European Games champion and world bronze winner Amina Zidani. The boxing events at the Paris Games will take place at two venues.
