With the personal intervention of the Chief Minister, officials swung into action and made arrangements to distribute food packets till late last night by venturing into flood affected regions through boats. Chief Minister Naidu also contacted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and apprised them of the present flood crisis and requested them to treat this flood devastation as natural calamity. As per the request of the CM, the central government responded immediately and started deploying 10 NDRF teams, 40 power boats and six helicopters to rescue people from flood affected regions. He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh each to the kin of those who were killed in the rain-related incidents. State IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu said full details on the loss of life and others would be known after reports on damage are received. The government will submit a comprehensive report on the flood damage to the Centre, an official release said. Officials informed the CM that crops in over 1.5 lakh acres suffered damage, as per preliminary estimates The flood-hit areas of Khammam presented a scene of extensive damage as household items were washed away and some items carried away by water were stuck to the gates of houses. Residents of flood-affected areas narrated their woes to state Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, who visited them. Over 7,500 passengers from these trains were brought to the nearest Railway stations in state-run RTC buses on Sunday evening and special trains were arranged to take them to their respective destinations, he added. Full-scale enumeration of the damage would be undertaken after the flood recedes. In the neighbouring West Godavari, 55 villages under three mandals were still facing the flood fury. Vasishta Godavari, a tributary of the perennial river, was in spate, cutting off road communication network. Nine relief camps were continuing in the district where about 2,000 people were provided shelter after they were evacuated from the flood-affected villages, according to a Joint Collector. On river Krishna, the Srisailam reservoir received an inflow of 2.81 lakh cusecs on Tuesday morning of which 63,947 cusecs was discharged downstream. Nagarjuna Sagar received 40,259 cusecs and Pulichintala 27,322 cusecs but discharges from these two projects have not yet begun as they still have a large flood cushion. Flood discharge from Muniyeru rivulet also dropped on Tuesday to about 70,000 cusecs. Though the Prakasam Barrage downstream at Vijayawada received an inflow of 1.29 lakh cusecs, only 1.08 lakh cusecs was being let out into the sea. OTO, on the other hand, would provide the vehicle at ₹2500 EMI for a period of two years. At the end of the tenure the customer can choose to return the vehicle and pay nothing. They can also choose to pay the rest of the amount in installments and retain the vehicle or upgrade it. Chhazed explained that newage customers like to upgrade or change their vehicle every two-three years, therefore returning the vehicle is a handy option for them. Two-wheeler financing company OTO raises $6 million to offer services in 15 Indian cities

Bhubaneswar, May 19 (IANS) With extremely severe cyclone 'Amphan' inching closer towards the Odisha coast, the state government has stepped up efforts for evacuation of people from vulnerable areas. The cyclone, which will make landfall between West Bengal and Bangladesh coast during Wednesday afternoon or evening as a very severe cyclonic storm, has already started triggering rainfall in several parts of Odisha, said H.R. Biswas, Bhubaneswar MeT centre director. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Kumar Jena said the evacuation of people living in low-lying areas, thatched and mud structures in the coastal districts is under progress and it will be completed by 10 pm. "As per information received from districts, over 35,000 people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas and shifted to safe shelters by 3 pm. It is expected to continue till 10 pm today," said Jena. He appealed to the people to cooperate with the administration and move to the cyclone shelters for their safety. A total of 634 multipurpose cyclone and flood shelters and 7,092 other permanent buildings with cumulative capacity to accommodate more than 12 lakh people are kept ready in 12 districts. "In addition to PRI and local administration, we are using local based alert system (LBAS) and self broadcasting system for extending our outreach to people without creating panic among them," said Jena. The SRC said damages to public and private properties is expected in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur and Mayurbhanj districts. There may be total destruction of thatched and kutcha houses, power and communication poles, standing crops and roads, and minor disruption of railways, overhead power lines and signalling systems. In order to meet any eventuality, as many 16 units of National Disaster Response Force, 15 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), 75 teams of Odisha Forest Development Corporation (OFDC) and 217 fire service teams have been deployed in the likely to be affected districts. Three NDRF units, 5 ODRAF units, 17 teams of fire service and 10 OFDC teams are kept on standby to be pressed into service. Besides, additional 2 teams of NDRF from 10th Battalion Vijayawada have been mobilised for the same. Chief secretary Asit Tripathy said four senior officers with vast experience in handling natural calamities have been deputed to different districts to guide the local administration. Earlier, the chief secretary held a meeting with Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba through video conferencing on Tuesday. The issues relating to evacuation of people from vulnerable areas, relief, rescue, storing of essential commodities and immediate restoration of road communication, power connectivity etc were discussed. Meanwhile, several ports in the state have taken precautionary measures to face the cyclonic storm. The ports have cancelled inward movement of all vessels while berths have also been vacated.
