The event is underway from April 7-10th in <keyword id="13486" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vietnam">Vietnam</keyword>’s Ho Chi Minh City.<br />

It’s quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Its moveable exterior panels with the semi-transparent trapezoidal details and long, low silhouette are shaped like that of a Swan.<br />

The seat and the handlebar grips appear to be made of leather.<br />

This is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Yamaha&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Yamaha</a>’s fourth such concept model based on its ‘RUN’ philosophy. It stands for ‘Revolutionary, Unique, Noble’ and this ‘refined dynamism’ philosophy allows the company’s designers to work on experimental designs based on futuristic material.<br />

It’s a striking concept surely, and its ‘wings’ give it the bird-like stance. It’s a piece of Art on wheels.<br />
<br />
The only sore here is that there has been no word whether the concept will even make it to the market. Fingers crossed that it does.<br />

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"The ladies really like Eddie," my stepsister tells me on the way to meet the 71-year-old biker for breakfast somewhere in the Rockies.</span></p>
<p>The man we're about to meet one bright September morning is one of the first members of the legendary outlaw biker outfit called the Iron Horsemen Motorcycle Club (IHMC).</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/2011-national-gang-threat-assessment">FBI calls the Horsemen a "one percent" Outlaw Motorcycle Gang (OMG)</a>, meaning the group has committed to enforce the club's laws with violence and maintain an ongoing criminal enterprise that brings them into "serious conflict with society and the law." The Feds also believe the group actively recruits former Army veterans into its ranks.</p>
<p>While Eddie (which is not his real name) says his days of active club involvement are behind him, he's a biker at heart and only put away his motorcycle <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chopper_(motorcycle)">chopper</a> when it became impossible for him to ride on two wheels anymore. He rides a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tricycle#Motorized_tricycles">three-wheel Chopper "trike"</a> now, and that's how we were first introduced.</p>
<p>I first met Eddie in August 2012 through my stepsister and her fiancé, whom we'll call Doug. Doug owns a mountainside motorcycle shop where Eddie had his trike designed. My stepsister was raised by a senior executive in Palo Alto and was a minor celebrity in the 1970s California drug scene. Somewhere between then and now Eddie "adopted" my stepsister as her "Biker dad," as she explains it.</p>
<p>In the years Doug and my stepsister have known Eddie, nothing he said raised any doubt that the man is who he claims. Doug tells me that week-long parties at Eddie's place with "old-school, patch-bearing motherf------ all hanging out" have only added to his credibility. (Doug noted that patches themselves are never worn at parties like this to avoid conflict among rival groups, but he knew members from previous meetings.)</p>
<p>Eddie is around six-feet tall, covered in tattoos from his neck down, with white hair all over his head and face that creates a striking Santa Clause impression if Santa were a heavy tobacco user and had a slightly nicotine-stained mustache and beard.</p>
<p>He fits the biker persona most would expect, wearing dirty and oil-stained slicks (pants) that repel more water the dirtier they are. "Slicks are also what a lazy-ass biker wears when he doesn't wanna do his laundry," Doug later explains.</p>
<p>And Eddie's armed.</p>

<p>Somewhere in the folds of his clothing and shoes are reputed to be several pistols. "He carries a bunch whenever he leaves the house," Doug tells me. "He says when he gets searched they generally miss one and thats what it's like when you're in hiding for decades."</p>
<p>At first, local respect for privacy kept people from asking why he's in seclusion. Later, when locals began to understand who he was and the reputation he had, nobody wanted to know who would have sent Eddie into hiding in the first place.</p>
<p>I asked him myself while visiting his home. "Cause I put my prick where it didn't belong." Not sure if he's being metaphorical, I ask him: "A woman?"</p>
<p>"Yeah, a woman." He says between mouthfuls of cigar smoke. "She was married to the wrong guy and here I am."</p>

<p>Eddie tells me his story, starting with his time as a <a href="http://www.navy.mil/navydata/personnel/seabees/seabee1.html">Naval Seabee</a> toward the start of the<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> Vietnam Conflict. Halfway through his tour in Okinawa he cross-trained to drive a truck and his mechanically slanted future was set.</span></p>
<p>Following his discharge, Eddie was asked to prospect for the Horsemen, and in 1968 he received his patch when he became one of the first members voted in.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.examiner.com/article/one-percenter-outlaw-bikers-facts-and-fiction">Sharon Smith of the Dallas Motorcycle Lifestyle Examiner</a>, who has lived the biker culture for decades, describes initiation:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">A Prospect must do anything a full patch-holder asks him to do. These tasks can range anywhere from chump duties, to more serious activities. It is not the Prospect's duty to reason why or question anything that is asked. His task is only to prove that there is nothing the brotherhood can't count on him for. The brotherhood must believe this man would throw himself in front of a bullet, to keep another patch-holder safe. It doesn't matter whether he particularly likes the patch-holder. He's not protecting the man; he's protecting the patch and everything it represents. He must not let the patch fall to the ground. Actually, he doesn't wear the patch ... the patch wears him.</p>

<p>But not even the patch could protect Eddie from the jilted husband on his trail for more than 20 years, and he only agreed to this story now because the man is no longer after him.</p>
<p>"He died," Eddie explains exposing a wood-grip pistol in a holster beneath his vest.</p>
<p>"How?" I ask.</p>
<p>"Shot," he says. "Not by me, of course, but life of a one percenter is death or prison," he continues. "I've outlived all my biker enemies and the citizens for that matter," he says referring to those not in a motorcycle club.</p>
<p>As he thinks about this, Eddie pulls out a <a href="http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2010/09/don-gammill-jr/gun-review-kel-tec-p3at-380/">Kel-Tec P3AT .380 pistol</a> from the left front pocket of his slicks. The P3AT is perhaps the lightest and most concealable pistol in the world.</p>
<p>"That is a small pistol," I say, recognizing it. "Not the size of the gun, but where you put the bullet," Eddie replies.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Eddie says he didn't expect to live this long - he just went to his 53rd high school reunion. The years have become precious and he's changing his ways in hopes of sticking around as long as possible.</span></p>
<p>Eddie's not been well, my stepsister tells me. A lady friend took him to Florida for his birthday last year and after consuming a lot of "powders" he'd been hit by health issues.</p>
<p>He takes Crestor for his cholesterol and a bottle sits on the floor by his feet. "I think that has pot in it," he says bending to pick it up. "No," he says dropping it. "BBs." (For one of the less deadly guns sitting about.)</p>

<p>In response to doctor's orders, Eddie recently quit drinking and partying like he had, sticking to the medical marijuana that he gets from Colorado dispensaries.</p>
<p>He has plenty of understanding about selling drugs too. </p>
<p>Eddie explains that one percent OMGs like the Horsemen will set up a drug house fronted by a business or residence. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">If the club can get one production cycle from the drug house and sell its drugs without arrest, it has recovered expenses and turned a minor profit. If the club can escape detection for a second cycle of drug manufacturing and selling, Eddie explains, "That's all profit."</span></p>
<p>"It was all about pot in the beginning," Eddie says. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"But a 50-pound bale of marijuana is about yea big," he says, making a large rectangle with hand gestures. "And pot goes for about $10 a gram."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"Fifty pounds of crank (methamphetamine) is about this big," he says, making a much smaller rectangle with his hands than he made for the equivalent amount of pot. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"Meth costs about 30 cents a gram to make," Eddie says.</span></p>
<p><span>He doesn't need to explain.</span></p>
<p>The reason guys on "<a href="http://www.amctv.com/shows/breaking-bad">Breaking Bad</a>" make so much money is because meth sells for about $25 a quarter gram right now on the mountain where Eddie lives, or $100 a gram. <a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meth/faqs/">PBS reports</a> that it has seen meth sell for up to $330 a gram.</p>

<p>It's something to think about as I notice Eddie's hideout has as much weaponry as a drug house: pistols, bow and arrows, ammunition, knives, swords, a WWI trench knife, and a sawed-off shotgun are strategically strewn about the place.</p>
<p>Taking a photo of his shotgun, Eddie becomes concerned. "Do not show my face or my name," he says again, looking at my stepsister. "This," he says, picking up the sawed-off, "is a 20-year charge."</p>
<p>He debates what law might stick as he explains the age of the weapon and the type of round loaded inside. "At my age I can't afford to do even a nickel," he says, referring to the idea of spending five years in prison.</p>

<p>Eddie reaches down and packs up a homemade pipe designed to hold hash and pot separately but draw them in the same breath. My stepsister and I each have to hold a lighter as Eddie takes a deep drag.</p>
<p>Exhaling and holding the pipe toward me, he says, "This'll knock your dick in the dirt."</p>
<p>I decline and ask to take more pictures. Eddie nods and asks me if I like skulls, explaining there are a case of mammal skulls upstairs and a mannequin called GI Jane that he and visitors dress up in various outfits.</p>

<p>A quick tour upstairs finds another floor of well-organized chaos. Everything from a dozen Polaroid cameras to a 1950s soda machine are wedged between raw timber walls and massive plate glass windows.</p>
<p>GI Jane is there, and a string of photos from a competition where she was the subject are taped over her head to the ceiling.</p>
<p>It seems like a good place for the duo from the History Channel show "<a href="http://www.history.com/shows/american-pickers">American Pickers</a>" to stumble across.</p>
<p>"All of this stuff goes to the club when he dies," my stepsister tells me on the way out. There's a saying that <a href="http://www.examiner.com/article/one-percenter-outlaw-bikers-facts-and-fiction">to get a one-percent patch you have to turn your life</a> over to the club. In Eddie's case he's turning over his death, as well.</p>

<p>Back outside swirling black clouds meet over the neighboring canyons as Eddie explains the trajectory for one of his firing ranges.</p>
<p>He shoots across the street into the neighboring hillside with rifles and points to a dangling piece of metal where he shoots his pistols.</p>
<p>An old Ford tractor sits to the side, its seat beneath a red square awning rigged to keep Eddie out of the sun.</p>
<p>"Those clouds," Eddie says in his gravely voice. "Winds come through these canyons and tear them apart. It was like that when I got the place 40 years ago. This is the Angry Acre, and that's why I bought it."</p>
<p>Opening the door to my stepsister's big blue Oldsmobile I ask Eddie if the woman was worth the running and if he would do it again.</p>
<p><span>"Was it worth it? Hell yeah it was worth it," Eddie says. "And would I do it again? </span><span>You betcha."</span></p>

Here's What Happens When A Seriously Tough Old Biker Goes Into Hiding In The Mountains

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Norman Bour nearly lost everything during the 2008 recession when he was living in California.</li><li>Bour, now 70, and his wife worried about affording retirement in the US and moved abroad in 2019.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Norman Bour, 70, who, along with his wife, left the US for Europe to live abroad in 2019. He writes about his experiences and tips for baby boomers interested in doing the same. The discussion has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>In the early 2000s, I had a good run in the real-estate industry. I was doing mortgages and had a real estate and finance radio show with a partner in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/los-angeles-kid-friendly-city-travel-guide-2024-8">Los Angeles</a>. I was making good money.</p><p>However, everything<strong> </strong>fell during the 2008 recession — I don't know if I could have prepared for such a downturn.</p><p>For many people, if they have a medical problem or financial setback, it takes very little to deplete their savings. It happened to me.</p><p>Over four years, I liquidated my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baby-boomer-financial-independence-retired-age-60-puerto-vallarta-mexico-2024-9">retirement</a> accounts, savings, and investment property, reducing my income from a healthy six figures to a very small amount.</p><p>Like many older people, I found myself a lot closer to homelessness than I cared to admit.</p><p>The ordeal was a real adjustment to my ego because no one likes to think that they're 60 years old and a failure, and that they've lost everything they worked for their entire lives, especially when their peak earning years are behind them.</p><h2 id="713e61bb-b927-4268-9b15-cfc841eecddc"><strong>I had to cut costs to survive</strong></h2><p>Since I was never a consistent saver and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-california-utah-cost-of-living-san-diego-weather-slc-2024-7">California's cost of living</a> was rising, I knew retirement would be a struggle.</p><p>I realized I had to start rebuilding myself to survive for the rest of my life.</p><p>While so many things were outside my control — the economy and my clients — I knew I could control my expenses, where I lived, and my lifestyle.</p><p>I became a minimalist.</p><p>In 2013, after 27 years of marriage, I divorced and went from living in a large four-bedroom house worth $700,000 to renting a room in an Airbnb in Costa Mesa, Orange County, for around $700 a month.</p><p>After the recovery from the recession, I had no interest in getting back into real estate. Instead, I started a video marketing consulting company.</p><p>But Orange County living was still pricey, so I started taking Social Security as early as I could — at age 62 — to supplement my income.</p><h2 id="51d83339-b79b-40bd-9370-81a1cecac7a5"><strong>Leaving the US made the most financial sense</strong></h2><p>Leaving the United States was never on my radar, my dream, or my goal.</p><p>It all happened accidentally when I was invited to speak in Europe as a video marketing consultant in 2016. Over three weeks in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-from-us-uk-germany-europe-not-utopia-travel-2024-8">Europe</a>, I recognized that the cost of living outside the US was far more reasonable.</p><p>That's when the light went on.</p><p>From a financial standpoint, it made sense to move abroad. There was also so much of the world I wanted to experience. I also knew my consulting business was location-independent.</p><div type="image" title="A plaza in Valencia, Spain, in February 2019." height="1324" width="1766" msid="114434663" hostid="261" sizebytes="473388"></div><p>My girlfriend at the time, now wife, and I left the US in February 2019.</p><p>Before we left California, I sold everything I owned through garage sales and also had about $8,000 in savings.</p><p>Additionally, I receive $1,700 a month from Social Security and, at the time, was making another $1,000 a month from consulting and writing. My wife received alimony as well, so she was making around $1,100, giving us a total monthly income of about $3,000.</p><p>Had we continued living in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-of-living-in-california-cities-prices-housing-medical-energy-2023-8">California</a>, it would have felt like living at the poverty level when you added up the costs of rent, insurance, food, a car, gasoline, and all the other expenses. I would have been in a bad financial position.</p><h2 id="b5676436-7999-4e8d-9af5-6334a083c3d7"><strong>We're living cheaply abroad in many countries</strong></h2><p>Over the years, my wife and I have visited and lived together in about 43 countries in South America, Europe, and Asia, including Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain.</p><p>Several factors drive us when choosing where to live, with the weather being the most important. After living in Southern California for 40 years, we are not cold-weather people.</p><p>Another factor is the cost of living. We try to avoid living in expensive places like Copenhagen or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-in-france-ways-life-has-been-better-changes-2024-6">France</a>; otherwise, we would be in the same financial situation as in the US.</p><div type="image" title="Kathleen Plumley standing on a bridge overlooking the sea." height="1382" width="1842" msid="114434666" hostid="261" sizebytes="213678"></div><p>We arrived in Asia in November 2023 after taking a flight from Australia. We've been to Vietnam, Thailand, and Bali and now live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.</p><p>It's a pleasant place to be. We walk a lot, and the temperature is comfortable. We live in a nice, large one-bedroom apartment with a big bathroom, a beautiful balcony, and a lovely view, all for $700 a month.</p><div type="image" title="People walking around the Batu Cave in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia." height="994" width="1766" msid="114434660" hostid="261" sizebytes="301712"></div><p>We came to Malaysia for several reasons. One big reason is that we hadn't been here much before, and also because it is a very affordable country for medical care.</p><p>My wife is going to need cataract surgery, which could cost $4,000 to $6,000 in the US. She can have it done in Malaysia for probably less than $2,000.</p><p>While living abroad, we self-insure. We have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomers-medicare-part-d-prescription-drug-costs-biden-inflation-reduction-2024-2">Medicare</a> but dropped Part B — which covers doctors and prescriptions — since we were paying $170 a month for it and had virtually no chance of using it without a home in the US.</p><h2 id="7e7c2c40-de80-42e6-99ea-2219338297a3"><strong>It was the right decision to move abroad as a boomer</strong></h2><p>I miss certain aspects of the US, like my friends, and familiar comforts, such as visiting an In-N-Out Burger or a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/target-circle-program-not-worth-it-according-to-frequent-shopper-2024-9">Target</a> and easily reading the signage when I walk into a shop.</p><p>But my wife and I are very spiritual and practice gratitude, constantly reminding ourselves how fortunate we are to live this lifestyle.</p><p>We already have the next year planned out: We'll be in Malaysia until December 22, then go back to Bali, where we'll stay at a hotel on the bluff with an ocean view for only $26 a night. We'll spend 60 days in the country, then another 60-day window in a country we've yet to decide on, before heading to Europe.</p><p>In April, we'll fly to Greece to pick up a motorcycle in nearby Romania. For several months, we'll ride through Greece and then take a ferry to Italy to explore southern Italy, Sicily, Malta, and Sardinia.</p><div type="image" title="The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia." height="1382" width="1736" msid="114434669" hostid="261" sizebytes="321030"></div><p>Then it's back to the Balkans for a few months in Eastern Europe, and then we'll probably head back to Asia.</p><p>In the months before leaving the US, I created my blog, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://travelyounger.com/author/storminnorm/">Travel Younger</a><em>.</em> The goal is to teach anyone over 50 how to travel smartly.</p><p>Before I came to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-places-to-go-in-europe-travel-planner-favorite-destinations-2024-10">Europe</a>, I recognized that young people made traveling look so easy. This was quite intimidating as an older person who was not very experienced as a traveler. I said, "I need to learn how to travel like them. I need to learn how to travel younger."</p><p>The blog is not a revenue generator; it's just one way of giving back.</p><p>Many people my age are starting to think outside the box and recognize that they can take their $3,000-a-month income in the US and live nomadically and affordably elsewhere. I want to show them this isn't the world they remember 50 years ago.</p><p>I feel that having new experiences keeps us all mentally young.</p>

I couldn't afford retirement in the US on $3,000 a month, so I moved abroad. I've lived in 43 countries and am happier.

I live on a 27-acre property in Kansas and am fortunate enough to be surrounded by friends and family who support my desire to continue to work.</p><p>My career began at Burson-Marsteller in New York City in 1968 and progressed through several other large PR firms and C-level stints on the corporate side. Thirty years ago, I founded Ink Inc. to go off on my own.</p><p>I still work every day and have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-retiring-early-fire-movement-financial-independence-millionaire-savings-work-2024-5">no immediate plans to retire</a>.</p><h2 id="ad1bc328-7ef3-4ffc-9a76-7da039823498"><strong>I'm still working because I still love my career</strong></h2><p>One of the things that keeps me going is having a competitive nature. Securing media can be a chase, and the chase never gets old. There's a lot of "no" in PR, and if you don't embrace the chase, you're lessening the chances to feel and earn on your client's behalf the satisfaction of succeeding.</p><p>I never really <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-retiring-early-nervous-about-money-2024-5">considered retiring</a> in my 60s when many people typically do. However, when it becomes drudgery, or I find myself bored beyond recovery, which hasn't happened yet, I may.</p><p>I do look forward to turning over the reins of CEO management, which I've been doing gradually for the last year, so I might spend more time on the creative side of the business, including writing and pursuing prospective clients on a personal level. I don't have a set age when I plan to stop working entirely.</p><h2 id="39791f90-c128-4399-8907-5f3a6e7e070e"><strong>I'm not planning on retiring in the classic sense to some golf course</strong></h2><p>Most people experience fatigue, but I've never felt <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/side-hustle-cured-my-burnout-2024-4">burned out</a>. PR is a pressure-filled profession, a little more so at the top. Sometimes, clients, the media, or your employees can drive you a little nuts. I've been doing it for so long that I know these trials come in cycles and have a way of working themselves out with a little skill and patience.</p><p>I'm extremely fortunate that I continue to be in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/probiotic-drinks-gut-health-functional-wellness-cbd-toxic-2024-5">excellent health</a>. I've lost close friends and family to various ailments and remain conscious of my fortuity. I'm committed to exercising and watching my diet. I still work out several times a week. I also keep my mind sharp and am always learning.</p><p>My kids and grandkids are extremely important in my life. Family is the real legacy we leave behind, not some business, successful or not. They live in California and Vietnam, but we share our lives with personal visits several times a year and weekly Zoom calls.</p><h2 id="9268eecb-1e18-4d70-af90-9da55ade3bd9"><strong>My age sometimes surprises people</strong></h2><p>I notice that people underestimate my age due to my demeanor and gait. Maintaining a sense of wonder and humor and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/you-dont-need-to-walk-10000-steps-day-health-benefits-2022-9">literally walking fast</a> so the young ones don't overtake me has been a valuable combination.</p><p>I often get comments about how fast I walk "for my age." This is a term I personally loathe, as if it's predetermined how one is supposed to act, or walk, at a certain point in life.</p><p>I have a passion for everyday life, even its ugly negative sides, and a sense of integrity, where I strive to do the right thing even though it might not always work out. My sense of humor about the absurdities around us is a big part of who I am.</p><p>I'm not typically asked how old I am, but on the rare occasion I'm asked, my response usually surprises the inquirer, which isn't a bad feeling. I believe it has less to do with my physical looks and more with how I present myself. Being active, interested, and having a sense of humor conveys a sense of youth.</p><h2 id="0b2d33ef-cf24-45be-9b87-20601de1b0ce"><strong>I begin my workweek and day with exercise and watching the network morning shows</strong></h2><p>When I step away, I will miss the camaraderie and energy of the office the most.</p><p>Once I'm in the office, which I go to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/turned-down-job-interview-because-of-return-to-office-rto-2023-9">five days a week</a> when I'm home, I scour The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and USA Today, looking for news that might be relevant to our clients or prospective clients.</p><p>I then review my emails and texts before starting my own correspondence and phone calls based on a yellow-pad schedule I've created. I then have internal meetings and Zoom calls with prospects.</p><p>I try to shut the office door no later than 5:30 p.m. or 6 p.m. because <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-work-life-balance-advice-boss-lessons-job-2024-1">work-life balance</a> is important to me. I often travel to meet with clients or prospects, as I believe the personal touch is far more effective than Zoom.</p><p>In my free time, I'm a passionate follower of my alma mater, the Kansas Jayhawks. Another true passion of mine is long-distance motorcycle riding. I've had memorable trips throughout Cuba, Vietnam, Mexico, and almost every corner of the US. The only time he took a plane, to Singapore, he had to borrow it from Air China.</strong></li><li><strong>That invited comments that he was overly reliant on Beijing, which he reportedly did not appreciate.</strong></li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.</a></strong></li></ul><p>Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived for his first-ever state visit to North Korea on Thursday, reportedly to a hero's welcome that included a 21-gun salute and a cheering crowd of thousands.</p><p>He arrived by plane at Pyongyang's Sunan International Airport around noon local time for his two-day summit with Kim, China's state-run <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-06/20/c_138158985.htm">Xinhua news agency reported</a>.</p><p>Kim and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, personally greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, on the tarmac, Xinhua said.</p><p>But the fact that Xi flew to North Korea highlights a difference between the two leaders that some say has embarrassed Kim in the past.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>Though Kim flies domestically by plane - on a 40-year-old, Soviet-made Ilyushin Il-62 plane - he almost always takes a train for his international travels, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kim-takes-train-to-trump-vietnam-summit-likely-to-save-face-with-china-2019-2">even if lengthens his journey by several days</a>.</p><p>The map below shows a 2,000-mile journey he took by train from Pyongyang to Hanoi earlier this year for his second summit with US President Donald Trump.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>The one time Kim traveled out of his country by plane, at least as leader, was to Singapore last June for his first meeting with Trump.</p><p>To do so, he borrowed a Boeing 747 from Air China, which is majority-owned by the Chinese government. He had to borrow a plane because his own one was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-kim-summit-legitimized-notorious-dictator-2018-6">deemed unsafe for the 2,900-mile journey</a>.</p><p>His use of a Chinese plane to his one-on-one meeting with Trump, which China did not attend, invited remarks that he was overly reliant on Beijing.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>Kim did not appreciate those comments, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/24/world/asia/north-korea-kim-jong-un-china-train.html">The New York Times reported</a>.</p><p>When he made his next major train journey, the Times cited Cheng Xiaohe, a North Korea expert at Beijing's Renmin University, on that point.</p><p>Cheng said: "He does not want to show the world his heavy reliance on China by waving his hand in front of China's national flag on a Chinese plane as he did at the Singapore airport."</p><p>"Traveling by train is a forced choice."</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-kim-jong-uns-personal-train-luxurious-and-bulletproof-2018-3">Inside Kim Jong Un's personal train - which is bulletproof, has all-white conference rooms, and its own red carpet ramp</a></em></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><h2>A hero's welcome for Xi</h2><p>Xi's trip to North Korea is the first from a Chinese leader in 14 years, and he was received like a hero.</p><p>According to Xinhua, North Korea held a "grand welcome ceremony" for Xi at the airport, which included a 21-gun salute, the playing of both countries' national anthems, and an army march-past.</p><p>Nearly 10,000 people lined up at the airport, waving flowers, and chanting slogans to welcome the Chinese delegation, Xinhua said.</p><p>Xi then departed the airport in a huge motorcade, which included 21 motorcycles. Upon arriving to downtown Pyongyang, the Chinese leader then rode an open-top car alongside Kim to a central square.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>The state visit comes as both countries' relationships with the US turn increasingly sour.</p><p>Beijing and Washington are locked in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/us-china-trade-war">protracted trade war</a>, which has seen both sides impose hundreds of billions of dollars on each others' exports, and the Trump administration is trying to limit the influence of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/tech-cold-war">Chinese tech around the world</a>.</p><p>North Korea's relationship with the US has also soured since Kim and Trump's February summit in Vietnam ended without an agreement.</p><p>Pyongyang conducted new missile tests last month, which US National Security Advisor John Bolton <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-disagrees-with-abe-north-korean-missile-tests-praises-kim-2019-5">claimed violated UN Security Council resolutions</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>On Wednesday both countries' state media <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/xi-supports-north-koreas-direction-on-issues-ahead-of-visit-2019-6">published an essay</a>, written by Xi himself, that lauded the two countries' friendship and praised North Korea for moving in the "right direction" by trying to resolve political issues on the Korean Peninsula.</p><p>Xi wrote, <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-06/19/c_138155523.htm">according to Xinhua</a>: "I will pay a state visit to the DPRK with good wishes of carrying forward our friendship and writing a new chapter of our relations."</p><p>DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the formal name for North Korea.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/xi-supports-north-koreas-direction-on-issues-ahead-of-visit-2019-6">Chinese President Xi Jinping praises North Korea ahead of his historic 2-day trip to Pyongyang - the first for a Chinese leader in 14 years</a></em></p><p>Kim has been trying to alleviate international sanctions imposed on his regime, but they have remained in place. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a special Zika <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> advisory for 11 Southeast Asian countries.<p><span>"CDC now recommends that pregnant women should consider postponing nonessential travel to these countries because of the uncertain risk of Zika virus infection," the agency said in <a href="http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/zika-virus-southeast-asia">a statement</a>.</span></p><p>The countries on this list are: <strong>Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Philippines, Thailand, East Timor, and Vietnam</strong>.</p><p><span>The Zika virus, which is mainly transmitted&#xa0;by&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/could-genetically-engineered-mosquitos-stop-zika-2016-1">mosquitoes</a><span>, has been spreading around the Americas and parts of Asia over the past year.&#xa0;It's been identified in the mainland&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/news/health-care/article104627676.html">US in Miami, Florida</a><span>. There have been outbreaks in Southeast Asia for a number of years, and, the CDC noted, many residents are likely immune. It's travellers coming from the US that the CDC is concerned about, especially since </span>"recent variations have been observed in the number of cases reported" in the region. (That&#xa0;could be due to multiple factors, including higher awareness of the virus or a more infectious strain.)</p><p>The CDC emphasized that "the level of this risk is unknown and likely lower than in areas where Zika virus is newly introduced and spreading widely."</p><p>Once infected with Zika, only about 20% of people <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/zika/symptoms/index.html">ever show symptoms</a>, which most commonly include fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes.</p><p>One reason Zika is troubling is that&#xa0;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/zika-birth-defects-rate-2016-9">it is a cause of birth defects</a>, including microcephaly - a condition where the baby's head is abnormally small - in babies whose mothers have had Zika. The two hadn't seen each other in seven years.</li><li>Har'el had an unconventional way of shooting the movie, having everything ready on set so when LaBeouf showed up in an emotional state they could film immediately. &#xa0;</li><li>"Honey Boy" opens in theaters on Friday.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Alma Har'el admits there were times when she could see hints of the aggressive person Shia LaBeouf was known for in the tabloids. She wouldn't think much of it, though, as that persona was far from the sensitive actor who loved her first movie, the 2011 documentary "Bombay Beach," which led to them becoming friends and collaborators.&#xa0;</p><p>But by July 2017, after she saw <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2017/07/11/shia-labeouf-arrest-bodycam-footage-savannah/">a video TMZ obtained</a> of an intoxicated LaBeouf shouting expletives at a Savannah, Georgia, police officer and charged with public intoxication (<a href="https://www.tmz.com/2017/07/12/shia-labeouf-arrest-video-black-racist/">later footage showed</a> him shouting racist remarks to a black officer at the police station), she was extremely concerned for her friend.&#xa0;</p><p>"It was like another person that comes out of him," Har'el told Business Insider by phone of LaBeouf. "It's only after he was diagnosed with PTSD that a lot of the anger and aggression that happened in his past make sense."</p><p>Sentenced to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-people-shialabeouf/shia-labeouf-pleads-guilty-to-obstruction-charge-in-july-arrest-idUSKBN1CP02A">community service and one year of probation</a>, LaBeouf was also court-ordered to attend a drug rehab facility. There, through counseling, he was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder stemming from his troubled childhood with his father. He recorded the sessions he was having with his counselors that forced him to look back on his childhood and transcribed them. Perhaps because he's been an actor since age 10, that transcription evolved into a script. Suddenly he was molding his painful past into a story about a child actor named Otis Lort and his relationship with his father, James.</p><p>Soon after, with no notice, Har'el received a script in the mail titled "Stamen," the word for the male fertilizing organ of a flower. It was authored by Otis Lort.&#xa0;</p><p>"And with the script were two photos of Shia with his father when he was a very young kid, which broke my heart," Har'el said. "I saw those photos and I knew I had to make this film."</p><p>Though LaBeouf had given the characters different names, the script told the story of the warts-and-all true relationship he and his father Jeffrey had when the actor was 12 years old and the star of the popular Disney Channel show, "Even Stevens."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>At the time his parents were divorced and LaBeouf was living with his father in a hotel not too far from where "Even Stevens" was shooting. LaBeouf paid his father to be his chaperone. Jeffrey would drive him to and from set every day on his motorcycle and watch over him on set.<p>But back at the hotel LaBeouf had to deal with his father's dark side. There was verbal and physical abuse. Jeffrey - a Vietnam vet and former rodeo clown - was also struggling to stay sober. Though in his eyes he was trying to toughen up his son, in reality he was severely damaging him. (LaBeouf's father has not publicly disputed his son's recollections.)</p><p>This is all laid out in "Honey Boy," in which LaBeouf plays his father, named James in the movie; Noah Jupe ("A Quiet Place") plays 12-year-old Otis; and Lucas Hedges ("Manchester by the Sea") plays 22-year-old Otis.</p><p>Thanks to LaBeouf's deeply personal script, along with Har'el's visually stunning storytelling (which marks her narrative feature debut), the movie "Honey Boy," named for what LaBeouf's dad called him as a kid, has found Oscar buzz due to its honest subject matter.</p><p>But making the movie was far from easy, as Har'el had to be part filmmaker and part therapist.</p><h2>To make the movie, LaBeouf reached out to his father for the first time in seven years</h2><p>Har'el first questioned if it was in LaBeouf's best interest to even be on a film set, as filming was to begin two months after LaBeouf left rehab.</p><p>"There was a lot of doubt both with his therapist and with him and with his mother," Har'el said. "But we all felt after having all these discussions that it was something we want to try to do together."</p><p>Then there was the matter of getting LaBeouf's father on board. There were the legal reasons to get his blessing, but Har'el also wanted LaBeouf to talk to him as part of his rehab.</p><p>"Shia hadn't spoken to him in seven years," Har'el said. "I told him, 'Go out to see him, tell him you want to make the film. Read him the script.'"</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>LaBeouf did just that. He traveled to Costa Rica, where his father lives, and spent a few weeks with him. She said they spent days having conversations, which were recorded and used to flesh out some parts of the story. That included the ending, which was not yet part of the script, and the role of James.<p>"The share scene in AA that Shia does as James, that was written from the recordings of his father when they were talking," Har'el said.</p><p>When LaBeouf and his father got around to reading the script and talking about a potential movie, Har'el said LaBeouf didn't initially say he was going to play the role of his father.</p><p>"He told him that Mel Gibson was going to play him, because his father really loves Mel Gibson," Har'el said. "But later he told him the truth."</p><p>Beside who would play him in the movie, LaBeouf's dad was concerned about one element being perfect: his rodeo clown routine.</p><p>In one scene, James is dressed as a rodeo clown and goes through an act where he stands on his head and a chicken is balanced on his backside. Har'el came to find out that was a routine LaBeouf's father was known for and said he was "very serious about it being authentic."</p><h2>Har'el had an unorthodox way of making the film, as no two takes were ever the same</h2><p>Coming from a documentary background, Har'el took an unorthodox approach to shooting many of the scenes. She would have everything set up for a scene so when LaBeouf was called to set, cameras would start rolling. Cinematographer Natasha Braier ("The Neon Demon") would adjust lighting so it would cover a wide range of the set, giving the actors a huge amount of freedom on each take.</p><p>Har'el did all this partly so the performances didn't feel staged, but also because she was aware of her star's mental state.</p><p>"Shia really was working himself up to very painful moments, and we weren't going to then say, 'Can you stand here and wait, we need to tweak the lights,'" Har'el said.</p><p>It's <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2019/11/honey-boy-cinematographer-natasha-braier-shia-labeouf-therapy-acting-process-1202186644/">been reported</a> that LaBeouf did most of his scenes in one take. Har'el said for very tough scenes there were two takes but that most of the time there were actually eight to 12 takes per scene.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>"A lot of times no take would be like the other," she explained. "People on the set would ask, 'How are you going to cut that? He did something there and he did something else there. You only have one take of that.' But because of having filmed documentaries and being a cinematographer and editor myself, I have a way of cutting those things. I see the cut. Some moments in the movie are cut between six or seven takes."</p><p>Regardless how it was done, the emotion being captured was clearly evident. Har'el said for some scenes it wasn't just the actors crying, but her and other crew members behind the camera as well.</p><p>"It was so raw and so real," she said.</p><h2>LaBeouf cried while watching his father see the movie</h2><p>After wowing audiences at its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Amazon Studios quickly snatched up the rights for a <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/amazon-closing-a-deal-shia-labeoufs-honey-boy-1179478">reported $5 million</a>.</p><p>Since then, the movie has become a critical darling (<a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/honey_boy">96% on Rotten Tomatoes</a>) and has made LaBeouf the latest Hollywood comeback story.</p><p>But beyond all that, "Honey Boy" has reconnected LaBeouf and his father.</p><p>Har'el said before Sundance, LaBeouf sent a steaming link of the movie to his father to watch on his computer. His father watched it and set up a video chat camera so that LaBeouf on his computer could see his father's face as he watched the movie.</p><p>"Shia sent me a photo of both of them doing this," she said. "Shia was crying watching his father looking at his screen."</p><p>And what did his dad think of the movie?</p><p>"I think his dad was really happy with it," Har'el said. "It was really hard for him to see it. He felt sometimes that wasn't him, and sometimes he felt we really captured him. It wasn't smooth sailing. He was really happy it was made and sent me a lot of loving messages on Facebook afterwards."</p><p>"I'm sure it was really hard," she continued.
