<ul class="summary-list"><li>Before he was the vice president-elect or a senator, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-vice-president-jd-vance-career-facts-2024-7">JD Vance</a> was a venture capitalist.</li><li>He maintains ownership stakes in several funds, according to his disclosure forms.</li></ul><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-results-congress-historic-firsts-2024-11">JD Vance</a> is a man of many careers: attorney, author, senator, vice president-elect, and, perhaps less well-known, venture capitalist.For about six years between graduating from law school and becoming a United States senator from Ohio, Vance held various positions in the space before eventually starting his own fund, Narya Capital.Over his career, Vance has been involved in investments across a broad range of business areas. Through Narya, he continues to hold a portfolio of investments in several startups, though he gave up his role as a partner there in 2022 and doesn't actively run or advise any of the companies.<h2 id="4b0a6db6-89d6-4a96-93e8-e561475e4b10">Vance's early VC career</h2>After a brief stint at a now-defunct biotech startup, Vance got a job at his benefactor <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peter-thiel">Peter Thiel's</a> venture fund Mithril Capital.He went on to work as a managing partner at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rise-of-the-rest-steve-case-jd-vance-2018-1">Rise of the Rest</a>, part of Steve Case's Revolution venture firm. The fund's mission is to invest in companies outside major tech hubs — New York, Silicon Valley, Boston — and Vance, whose outsider persona was cemented by his memoir <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-hillbilly-elegy-transformation-trump-vice-president-2024-7">"Hillbilly Elegy"</a>, was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-venture-capital-opioid-nonprofit-tech-record-ohio-senate-2021-8">seen as a perfect fit for the fund</a>.Vance was active in a number of deals for the firm, including leading investments in storage-sharing startup Neighbor, agtech company AppHarvest, and AI outfit Pryon, Rise of the Rest confirmed.<h2 id="114f37cf-0035-49cd-8b40-1bd02d5bdb6c">Vance co-founded Narya Capital in 2019</h2>After two years, Vance broke out on his own, cofounding <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hillbilly-elegy-jd-vance-launches-vc-fund-backed-by-thiel-2020-1">Narya Capital</a> in 2019 with investments from Thiel, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and VC veteran Marc Andreessen.Vance still owns pieces of the funds that he helped advise. According to his vice president and senate disclosure forms, he has a stake in Narya Capital Fund I, Narya Capital Fund II, and Rise of the Rest Seed Fund.His stake in Narya Capital Fund I is worth between $500,001 and $1 million. His holdings through Narya's Capital Fund II and the Rise of the Rest's Seed Fund are smaller, worth as much as $15,000 and $250,000, respectively, according to his disclosure forms.Through all three funds, he holds a portfolio of investments in dozens of startups. He doesn't actively run or advise any of the companies, and gave up his role as a partner in Narya in December 2022 after winning his senate seat, according to disclosure forms.It's not entirely clear which Rise of the Rest companies Vance has a stake in. The fund has two $150 million investment vehicles and did not disclose which portfolio companies are in which fund.Narya, meanwhile, has only completed one fundraise so far — its $120 million Fund I. The fund has a dozen active investments, according to its website, and because Vance has a stake in the fund, he technically owns a stake in each.The companies vary in their mission: One is a gene therapy company founded by Vivek Ramaswamy's brother, while another is a Catholic meditation and prayer app. Thiel, one of Vance's mentors, is listed as a separate investor in many of the companies, per PitchBook.Some are the type of companies that could work with the government.True Anomaly, an aerospace company for which Narya participated in two rounds of funding, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.trueanomaly.space/newsroom/true-anomaly-selected-for-30m-space-systems-command-contract-in-support-of-victus-haze-tactically-responsive-space-mission">won a $30 million government contract</a> from the US Space Force in April. Singapore Airlines will make an additional investment of Rs 3,194.5 crore in Tata Group-owned Air India post-merger of Vistara in November. The merger, announced on November 29, 2022, and set to be completed on November 11, 2024, will result in Singapore Airlines having a 25.1% stake in the enlarged Air India. Full-service carrier Vistara, which started flying on January 9, 2015, is a joint venture between Tatas and Singapore Airlines, where the latter holds a 49% shareholding. Vistara's last flight will take off tomorrow i.e. November 11, 2024. Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group on Friday said its consideration for the merger comprises the 49% interest in Vistara and Rs 20,585 million (Rs 2,058.5 crore) in cash in exchange for a 25.1% equity interest in the enlarged Air India. Post-merger, SIA expects to recognize a non-cash accounting gain of around 1.1 billion Singapore dollars and also start equity accounting for its share of Air India's financial results. According to a release on Friday, the merger includes an agreement for SIA to contribute its share of any funding previously provided by Tata prior to the completion of the merger, together with relevant funding costs up to Rs 5,020 crore that would allow it to maintain a 25.1% stake in Air India. "SIA's additional capital injection is expected to be Rs 31,945 million (equivalent to SGD 498 million), based on Tata's funding to Air India to date. This will occur after the completion of the merger and within November 2024 through subscription to new Air India shares. "Future capital injections will be considered based on Air India's requirements and available funding options," according to the release issued while announcing the airline's financial performance for the six months ended September 2024. The merger of Vistara with Air India will mark a major consolidation in the fast-growing Indian aviation space. SIA said the merged entity will have a significant presence across all key Indian air travel segments, including domestic, international, full-service, and low-cost operations. "This will strengthen SIA's multi-hub strategy, allowing it to continue participating directly in India's large and fast-growing aviation market," it added. Recently, Air India and SIA agreed to significantly expand their codeshare agreement, adding 11 Indian cities and another 40 international destinations to their network.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Cathie Wood's Ark Venture Fund allows retail investors to invest in high-growth startups.</li><li>The fund's net assets have climbed to $69 million, roughly tripling year over year.</li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cathie-wood-profile-ark-invest-etf-rise-success-following-tesla-2021-2">Cathie Wood</a> attracted billions of dollars with her fresh approach to betting on tech stocks, combining bold calls on the future with the ability for investors to buy and sell in an instant.Wood's effort to do something similar for venture capital has delivered investments in many of Silicon Valley's hottest deals. Though its investors will have to wait much longer before they see any returns.Wood's firm Ark Invest debuted a new closed-end interval fund in 2022, allowing investors to throw as little as $500 into a vehicle that invests in private startups. Investors can buy and sell shares in the fund just as they do with stocks, with some restrictions."Our goal here is to provide the best venture portfolio in the world to everyone in the world, not just to the rich and the famous," said Brett Winton, who works closely with Wood as chief futurist at Ark Invest and is an architect of the firm's venture capital strategy.The fund, Ark Venture Fund, has now gathered close to $70 million in assets, some distance from venture giants like Sequoia and Andreessen Horowitz, or even Ark's other funds. ARKK, Wood's most famous fund, has $5.8 billion in assets, down from a peak of $50 billion.Despite its small size, the fund has clinched deals to invest in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-bets-big-on-humanoid-robots-with-figure-ai-2024-2">Figure</a>, a Jeff Bezos-backed startup developing humanoid robots, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-xai-hiring-spree-ai-tutors-2024-10">xAI</a>, an artificial-intelligence firm founded by Elon Musk, and OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT.<div type="image" title="Elon Musk SpaceX" height="2034" width="2712" msid="115254561" hostid="261" sizebytes="675642"></div>It raises the question of why aging startups SpaceX, Epic Games, and Databricks, which have raised billions in funding, bother to include Ark in new rounds. SpaceX is Ark Venture Fund's largest holding, accounting for 13% of the fund's total assets, worth around $9 million.Winton said it's a subject he's frequently addressed in early meetings with founders.First, Ark produces reams of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ark-funds.com/articles">original research</a> on areas of investment. Winton said this research helps the firm win over teams because it demonstrates a grasp of their breakthrough technologies. "It means we can engage in really constructive conversations with them about their strategy," Winton said.Second, because Ark invests in both the private and public markets, it offers relationships with potential customers across the size spectrum of enterprises.Lastly, unlike a traditional venture fund, which has a fixed lifespan to invest the capital and return the profits to the fund's investors, Ark set up its venture fund to continue indefinitely, allowing investors to enter and exit the fund on a periodic basis.This provides flexibility to hold shares of companies after they go public, which can be particularly attractive for founders who are looking for investors with a long-term outlook and a higher tolerance for market volatility.In October, Ark invested at least $250 million into OpenAI's latest round, which pushed the AI startup's valuation to $157 billion.Most of that investment came from a related private venture fund that's only for high-net-worth investors. OpenAI makes up just 5% of the Ark Venture Fund's portfolio, which means it has less than $4 million invested."We would prefer to be able to write larger checks out of the venture fund than we currently can," Winton said.For that to happen, the fund will need to attract more investors.Though the fund is up 36% since its inception date, it's down 3% year to date, according to the website. The fee, 2.75%, is high relative to other interval funds, according to Morningstar, but it doesn't take carried interest or a share of profits.Winton said the fund could accrue assets into the billions of dollars; on a follow-up call, he walked back his comment, saying it's hard to know how big the fund could get."If that happens, then that'll actually become the story of Ark," he said. "Ark kind of changed venture capital."

The prestigious venture firm Sequoia Capital likes to say all its partners invest in every sector. But more than anyone, the growth-stage partner Grady, part of Business Insider's 2024 AI Power List, has led the firm's AI strategy, making bets on companies including OpenAI, Harvey, and Hugging Face. Along with another partner, Sonya Huang, Grady also wrote a public blog post on Sequoia's website inviting AI founders to email them their ideas and pitches directly. <ul class="summary-list"><li>VCs are lobbing cash at the presidential election and key congressional races, FEC data shows.</li><li>While most VCs favored Democrats, a16z's crypto giving dwarfed all other donations.</li></ul>America is bitterly divided over politics, and the tech industry — once portrayed as a liberal bastion — is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-a-distraction-silicon-valley-wants-to-be-over-2024-8">no different.</a> Among the sector's investor class, these disputes typically play out behind closed doors, with checkbooks rather than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-political-divide-twitter-elon-musk-kamala-harris-2024-8">angry social media posts</a>.This election cycle, investors at the top venture capital firms have plowed tens of millions of dollars into the election, both backing their favored political candidates and just cannily promoting commercial interests.Business Insider trawled political donation data released by the Federal Elections Commission to see how employees at VC firms have donated by candidates and political entities as the hotly contested race enters its final phase.The data is limited, focusing only on a subjective grouping of 10 high-profile firms, and cutting off at varying points over the summer. More recent FEC donor data will be released in the days and weeks ahead of the November 5 general election, often the most turbulent time in any cycle.The sheer volume of donations captured in the FEC filings underscores the significance of the tech constituency in the political arena, how the Silicon Valley elite has embraced politics of late, and just how flooded by money modern American politics has become.<h3 id="dd94bff4-8a0b-4fe4-8f40-59db1deb3131">The big spenders</h3>For venture capitalists, talking politics can invite scrutiny — or worse, turn off founders seeking funds for what might be the next big thing. It's part of the reason why many firms won't take positions on political issues or push a candidate on their employees.While that hasn't stopped individual investors from voting with their dollars, many VC firms are quick to point out that donations do not represent the organization's political stance.Except when they do.Andreessen Horowitz, or a16z, is the sole firm in our dataset to make political contributions directly. In this election cycle, it contributed $47 million to groups working to elect blockchain-friendly candidates, including Fairshake, a titanic crypto-industry backed super PAC. The firm is all-in on crypto, investing in Solana and Yuga Labs, and launched a $4.5 billion investment fund focused on this area in 2022.While the names of the firm's founders, Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, also appear on filings for donations to these groups, a16z says on its <a target="_blank" href="https://a16zcrypto.com/posts/article/contributing-to-fairshake-pac/">website</a> that these contributions come from the firm, not the founders personally. Though the distinction a16z draws between itself and its founders might be slightly artificial, given Andreessen and Horowitz created, own, and named the firm after themselves.For all the brouhaha about Andreessen and Horowitz putting <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-vcs-in-silicon-valley-2024-7">millions of dollars</a> behind Trump's latest bid for the White House and Horowitz hedging his bets with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/read-ben-horowitzs-email-a16z-saying-plans-donate-kamala-harris-2024-10">a planned donation to Harris</a>, the data shows the two are a rare breed among venture investors: relatively bipartisan donors.Horowitz sent roughly 59% of his personal political contributions to Republicans and a little under 40% to Democrats, while Andreessen more strongly favored Republicans this election cycle, with 64% of his donations.In the time period covered by the data, a16z even eclipsed Greylock, where outgoing partner and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-billionaires-investors-kamala-harris-mark-cuban-reid-hoffman-2024-8">Democrat megadonor</a> Reid Hoffman has personally pumped nearly $30 million in recorded donations into the presidential election and key congressional races.Investors at Founders Fund, which has backed SpaceX and Palantir, are nearly 100% Republican in donations, though the bulk of contributions came from Keith Rabois, who left the firm in January to rejoin Khosla Ventures. Employees of venerable firm Kleiner Perkins are the opposite, giving almost entirely to Democratic causes, as is the case for Y Combinator, the colossal startup accelerator.Like Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital is largely bipartisan. Unlike a16z, its biggest donors are largely split on party lines. Michael Moritz, who left the firm midway through last year and continues to serve as an advisor to Sequoia Heritage, its wealth management group, gives to Democrats, while Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire donates to Republicans.<h3 id="3ae3c5f1-4f98-4417-8e68-d3e367656034">Number-crunching</h3>When a candidate's campaign or other political entity receives political donations, they must report it either quarterly or monthly to the FEC, along with information about the donors, including the donor's employer. The federal agency processes these filings, before releasing them in a searchable format on its website.The data analyzed for this story cuts off on August 31 for entities that report donations on a monthly basis (including presidential campaigns, national party committees, and some PACs), while the cut-off for entities that report quarterly (including Congressional committees and some PACs) is June 30. (The filing deadline for Q3 data for quarterly filing entities was October 15, but this data isn't yet readily available in full online.)Business Insider selected 10 venture capital firms to focus on, taking into account fund size and cultural and industry significance. The list encompasses employees ranging from general partners and firm founders to marketers and executive assistants.The findings should not be interpreted as an exhaustive accounting of all venture capital investors' donations to date, but as a comparative analysis of how some of the industry's most significant players have approached political giving over the summer as the election heated up.Business Insider divided the recipients into three categories: Democrat-aligned, Republican-aligned, and unaffiliated — a grouping that includes both bipartisan groups like Fairshake and independents like West Virginia senator Joe Manchin, as well as organizations like The Lincoln Project, run by self-described Republicans but in practice supporting Democratic causes.<h3 id="383b71f4-35bb-4d3d-9fd8-a1daae48b9df">Hoffman vs. Horowitz</h3>Hoffman, the top individual donor, has developed a reputation as tech's Democratic Party standard-bearer. In this election cycle, records show his efforts include $2 million to help fund an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/saradorn/2024/01/31/billionaire-reid-hoffman-spent-2-million-on-bidens-new-hampshire-write-in-campaign-fec-records-show/">unusual write-in effort</a> for President Joe Biden in New Hampshire, and millions to joint fundraising committees for Harris after Biden dropped out. Hoffman also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/05/us/politics/nikki-haley-reid-hoffman-donation.html">gave $250,000</a> to a super PAC supporting Nikki Haley, the last major candidate to challenge Trump for the Republican nomination.Most donors more closely resemble Hoffman than Horowitz: clearly partisan, with an overwhelming majority of their donations going to support one party.Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures is another of the biggest donors on the Democratic side of the aisle, with more than $3 million in recorded donations during the time period to recipients including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Harris' presidential campaign. Khosla's giving puts him just above John Doerr, chairman of Kleiner Perkins and architect of cleantech investing, though he hasn't managed funds for the firm in a decade.Sequoia Capital's Doug Leone is one of VC's most prolific GOP-aligned political donors, giving his almost $3.8 million to the National Republican Committee and other causes.The vehicle of choice for many of these donations is via super PACs, a controversial political fundraising tool that can raise unlimited funds — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fec.gov/help-candidates-and-committees/candidate-taking-receipts/contribution-limits/">bypassing FEC limits on donations</a> to candidates and other committees — but cannot directly coordinate with candidates. Asides from Fairshake, some of the biggest super PACs out there favored by VC investors include Future Forward PAC, a tech billionaire-linked Democrat-supporting group, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-trump-america-super-pac-2024-10">America PAC, a right-wing entity founded by Elon Musk</a>.Investors also gave to several joint fundraising committees, which take money for multiple candidates or organizations. They, too, became favored over the years because a joint fundraising committee allows candidates to rake in cash while sharing the costs of fundraising — think website hosting fees, high-end hotels, and catering for splashy Hamptons fundraisers. The most well-loved committees in our dataset were the Harris Victory Fund and Harris Action Fund, the joint fundraising efforts between the Harris campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and state Democratic committees.Reached for comment by Business Insider, none of the named investment firms agreed to make employees available for interviews about their political giving. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I'm an investor at Calibrate Ventures, an early-stage deep-tech <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venture-capital-us-election-data-contributions-2024-10">venture capital</a> firm.The path that led me here was somewhat unconventional. My educational background is in astrophysics, but I've also dabbled in entrepreneurship and worked in consulting.I eventually got my first <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venture-capital-jobs-vc-recruiter-tips-interview-2024-11">VC job</a> when I was 23 years old.Though it took me about a year and a half to land my first VC role after finishing college, I'm still on the younger end of professionals in my industry. My advice for other people hoping to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-job-venture-capital-no-finance-career-2024-10">get into VC</a> is to leverage your network and stay up to date on the industry.<h2 id="45740239-990a-40e5-995f-6a177e376ce5">I realized academia wasn't for me and eventually pivoted to entrepreneurship</h2>During my teen years, I was fascinated with astrophysics. In 2016, I started my undergrad at Brown University, thinking I would go on to get my Ph.D. and become a scientist.However, I realized the academic path wasn't for me when I spent my freshman year summer working with a theoretical research group and trying to code physics formulas. It helped me realize I'm more drawn to roles where I can work directly with people and see tangible results.During my senior year of college, I was interested in entrepreneurship. A friend and I had talked about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-start-and-grow-a-business-founders-advice-2023-1">starting a company</a> one day. We brought in a third friend and did just that in our final year.We launched a mobile app that we spent the year developing. I got us into an accelerator and raised some grant capital. In the fall, we talked to a couple of VCs and even pitched <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-aragon-ai-founder-chose-startup-accelerator-neo-over-ycombinator">Y Combinator</a>. It wasn't a very successful venture, but it was a good learning opportunity.<h2 id="f17d28cb-e025-4dde-a7c0-b13aa110d2e2">I secured my first VC job with the help of recruiters</h2>I started working at EY-Parthenon in September 2020, after I'd graduated, as an associate consultant, assisting <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/private-equity-investment">private equity</a> firms in acquiring software and tech companies. This experience provided a great foundation for thinking more about technical due diligence, tech architecture, and strategy, but moving into investing and venture capital felt like the most exciting path.While I was in that role, recruiters reached out to me. I was surprised at first, but I was excited to make the leap. My background in physics, combined with my finance experience at EY-Parthenon and two summer internships at Goldman, gave me a unique blend of technical and financial expertise that helped propel my career.I worked with recruiters to get my first VC position at a firm called MTech Capital in December 2021. I stayed there for two years, but I still had a passion for physics and aerospace I couldn't explore at the firm, which invested in fintech, insurtech, and healthtech. For instance, while I was primarily focused on fintech in my first VC role, I still sought out deep tech exposure and attended a Space Investor Summit in LA, which allowed me to connect with satellite insurance companies leveraging space observation data.I also recommend leveraging your network — even if it's somebody you went to school with a couple of years ago, ask them if they have anyone they can introduce you to and just pick people's brains by asking questions about their career.If you want to be in this kind of industry, let people know what kinds of opportunities you're looking for. That way, people can let you know if they see a job posting that would be a fit for you. Having mentors through your network can also be helpful for identifying if a career path or role is right for you.I'm committed to staying in VC for the rest of my career. This marks a 42.1 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase in funding value, despite a modest 1.2 per cent rise in deal volume, according to a report by <keyword id="19910824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GlobalData" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="GlobalData" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="GlobalData">GlobalData</keyword>. The uptick in funding underscores investor confidence in India's <keyword id="21354516" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup-landscape" source="keywords">startup landscape</keyword>, even as global market conditions remain cautious. An analysis of GlobalData's Deals Database reveals that during the same period in 2023, India saw 664 VC deals with a disclosed funding value of USD 4.4 billion. Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, commented on the findings and said, "The massive jump in funding value, despite a modest 1.2 per cent growth in deal volume, can be attributed to some of the big-ticket deals announced during the review period. This also proves that even though VC investors remain cautious there is no dearth of money for promising startups." Some of the most notable <keyword id="20948843" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="VC-funding" source="keywords">VC funding</keyword> deals in India during January-July 2024 include USD 665 million raised by Zepto, USD 300 million by Meesho, USD 216 million by PharmEasy, USD 150 million by Radiance, USD 148 million by Kogta Financial, and USD 120 million by Rapido. India continues to stand out as a key player in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region for VC funding, trailing only China. It is also among the top five global markets in terms of both VC deal volume and value. During the January-July 2024 period, India accounted for 7 per cent of the total VC deals announced worldwide, while its share of the disclosed funding value was 4.3 per cent. Bose concluded, "Despite global economic uncertainties, India remains a pivotal market for VC activity, driven by a robust pipeline of promising startups that continue to attract significant capital. This trend reinforces India's position as a critical player in the global venture ecosystem, demonstrating resilience and growth even amid cautious investment sentiment."

First 7 months of FY25 see significant surge in VC funding to India's startups: GlobalData

Business Insider has verified her employment. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I grew up in an entrepreneurial family. My parents work at a family catering restaurant they've run for 30 years. They started a few businesses when I was a child and openly discussed the ups and downs of their businesses' operations.I knew I wanted to do something in business. I thought internships would help me figure out what.I got an internship at a local hedge fund in highschool. I worked there for two summers and one school year.I attended Florida State University and majored in finance. In 2017, my junior year of college, I had a summer financial internship at Thomson Reuters in New York.Those were formative summers for me. Through my exposure as an intern, I learned I liked working with a smaller team, where I had a lot of responsibilities and more creativity, versus a bigger investment house where everyone stays in their lane.I noticed there are ways to move up the corporate ladder at a bigger firm, but maybe not as quickly as at a younger, smaller firm.<h2 id="26c27631-144f-4aad-b290-8f95876eeb4d">Networking helped me land my job in venture capital</h2>At my high school hedge fund internship, I met Maggie Vo, now the managing general partner at Fuel Venture Capital, and got to know her well.I made a point of maintaining the relationship at college. I updated her on my progress and asked about hers.Maggie saw that I was willing to learn quickly and had the work ethic to contribute to the firm. She offered me an internship right after I graduated from college.Connecting with people in venture capital and maintaining those connections is imperative for young people. When you don't have quantitative metrics to prove your worth, industry connections can help. Reaching out meaningfully, even once a quarter, makes relationships warmer.<h2 id="d80906a1-7251-4830-9016-5b91f5bbfaab">Why I chose VC over investment banking and financial services</h2>At the time, I was considering opportunities in investment banking and financial service firms and was fielding full time offers.I chose Fuel because I would work with the investment side and directly with the founders. You don't often get exposure to both sides in a larger firm.When I joined Fuel in 2018, it was a small team of managers with one fund. I could work directly with senior leadership and access all the different parts of the business.It was also a rare opportunity to get into VC early.The typical path into VC starts with working a few years in investment banking, then a few years in a small private equity firm, and then you get a chance at VC. It can take 10 years. The alternative is to get an internship early, prove yourself, and work your way up.These days, there are more early opportunities. Some firms offer entry-level positions within the investment team, but they aren't common. Firms usually want to see that background before coming into VC.<h2 id="3b8bc890-7a6a-4da0-b3cb-bab35ee2a118">I worked my way up from intern to partner in under 7 years</h2>Fuel offered me a full time role three months after I started as an intern at 22. I then worked my way up through several more analyst roles.In the early days, I worked alongside Maggie on the investments team. I tried to absorb as much information as possible from meetings.I was working on decks, putting together due diligence packages on potential portfolio companies, and working on internal processes.I had to work harder since I didn't come to VC from the traditional investment banking path. For the first two years, I immersed myself in the industry, reading as much as possible and listening to industry podcasts.Now, I've done everything from refilling the printer to facilitating successful exits.You need to make yourself indispensable and understand every aspect of the business to thrive. Learning how to communicate effectively with everyone — founders, investors, and colleagues — was especially crucial.One easy, surefire way to move up the ranks is to know what your boss wants and, if possible, meet them there.When I first started as an intern, I also worked directly with Jeff Randsell, Fuel's founding partner. I noticed that he'd spent 25 years working his way up at Merrill Lynch. Because he'd been exposed to that cutthroat environment, I always made sure to be the last person to leave the office. He didn't say this was an expectation, but I hoped he'd recognize my hard work. I think it ultimately contributed to my getting a full time position at Fuel.<h2 id="6b480740-0c25-42a2-9afd-640b460a9dca">I shifted roles and got promoted to partner</h2>An opportunity to move on to operations arose in 2022. I never saw myself in operations because I thought it was a paperwork, back-office role. But it felt like a natural progression in my career, and I still got to work with founders and investors — now I'd understand even more about the business.Coming into the operations side, I had a good macro view of the firm I'd built up in my first four years.In this role, I work with third-party partners, run the audit process, and work directly with the tax and legal teams. I'm also involved in the investment side but with compliance. I even learned how to form a fund from the bottom up.I was promoted to partner,which was very important.<h2 id="d7507795-b2ba-4968-8b0f-430ba4120462">I've put in 110% effort to make it as a woman in VC</h2>With most jobs in finance including VC, there are fewer women at the table. You have to prove yourself and overcome implicit bias when you're a woman or a minority.I account for this by putting in 110% effort and a lot more planning and preparation to ensure I'm viewed as equal to everyone around me.Switching gears and interacting with a stressed founder and then a member of the tax team has been valuable to my career progress. The women I work with are very good at balancing many different things simultaneously. They are also observant and ask hard questions.These skills were especially useful in 2021 when founders went from capital exuberance to more scarcity. Everyone found this challenging.<h2 id="9be33f2f-2918-4b52-9330-3a9e63106dc0">VC means long hours, but it's fulfilling</h2>It's an 80 to 100-hour workweek industry. You have to enjoy the work. If not, it will be miserable.VC has turned out to be a great fit for me, and it's a career path I'm fully committed to.My entire journey has been so fulfilling with Fuel. I've seen founders' growth trajectories and how that's positively impacted all the people they employ and the generational wealth they're creating for their own families.While numbers heavily drive VC, it's also about gut instinct, relationships, and networking. You have to have intuition and move on it. It's not about waiting for direction. While you learn along the way, curiosity, and emotional intelligence are essential at the entry level.

Investments by <keyword id="34499" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-equity" source="Orion">private equity</keyword> (PE) and <keyword id="6357097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital" source="Orion">venture capital</keyword> (VC) funds to homegrown companies declined to $27.9 billion across 697 transactions this year (as of December 20), compared to $47.62 billion across 1,364 deals in 2022, according to a new report. 2023 saw more money being pulled out from the country by private equity players, with overall exits reaching $19.34 billion from 248 companies, in comparison to 233 exits worth $18.45 billion in 2022, according to data from Venture Intelligence and industry body IVCA. Meanwhile, venture <keyword id="989750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capital-funding" source="Orion">capital funding</keyword> for <keyword id="6362513" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups" source="Orion">startups</keyword> declined by 72 per cent this year compared to last year. The new-age companies in the country received $7.5 billion across all stages (as of December 15), compared with $25 billion last year, according to the data. The fall in <keyword id="6357455" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="funding" source="Orion">funding</keyword> this year is chiefly attributed to slow late-stage deals (Series D and above), which more than halved to $3.5 billion from $11.70 billion in 2022. The early-stage funding deals slowed down. The number of deals declined to almost half to 414 rounds from 871 rounds in the year-ago period, according to the report. Growth-stage funding rounds dropped to $1.9 billion via 99 deals, compared with $6.84 billion from 230 deals in 2022. Making a dent in India's startup growth story, the country slipped to fourth position in the global ranking among the highest-funded geographies in 2023, as it recorded lowest funding in five years. After grabbing the third spot globally in 2021 as well as in 2022, India ranked fourth behind the US, the UK and China this year, receiving only $7 billion in total funding (till December 5), according to recent data by global market intelligence platform Tracxn. In the third quarter (Q3) this year, India even slipped to fifth position among the highest-funded countries -- behind the US, the UK, China and France.

PE, VC investments in domestic companies drop to $27.9 bn in 2023

New Delhi, Capital markets regulator Sebi on Monday proposed to provide flexibility to Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), <keyword id="20198292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital-funds" source="keywords">Venture Capital Funds</keyword> (VCFs) and their investors to deal with unliquidated investments of their schemes beyond expiry of tenure. In its consultation paper, the regulator suggested that instead of launching a new liquidation scheme by AIFs, the same scheme itself can be allowed to continue with the unliquidated investments beyond their tenure for a certain period or dissolution period for fully liquidating their unliquidated investments. Additionally, the regulator proposed extending flexibility of the dissolution process to venture capital funds through migration to the <keyword id="19903848" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aif" source="keywords">AIF</keyword> regime. At present, the option to launch liquidation scheme is available only to those schemes of AIFs which are under 'Liquidation Period'-- the period of one year following the expiry of tenure of the scheme for fully liquidating the scheme and not available to VCFs, irrespective of whether their tenure has expired or not. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has sought public comments till February 2 on the proposal. The proposal came after Sebi received representations from participants in the AIF industry highlighting certain tax related issues. They also highlighted that setting up a liquidation scheme and winding up the original AIF scheme is a process involving time, cost, and efforts, which directly or indirectly, would ultimately be paid by investors. In the consultation paper, the regulator suggested that during the liquidation period of an AIF scheme, if the AIF decides to opt for dissolution period, then AIF should obtain positive consent of 75 per cent of investors by value of their investment in the scheme. After obtaining the consent, the AIF should arrange bids for a minimum of 25 per cent of the value of the unliquidated investments. The bids should be arranged for units representing consolidated value of all unliquidated investments of the scheme's investment portfolio. Sebi suggested that investor approval and bid should be obtained by the AIF before the expiry of the Liquidation Period of the scheme. "Liquidation schemes that have already been launched by AIFs shall be grand-fathered," Sebi said. The regulator also suggested one-time flexibility to AIF schemes, whose Liquidation Period has expired or would be expiring within one month from the date of notification in this regard, to deal with unliquidated investment. Also, it has recommended extending flexibility of the dissolution process to venture capital funds through migration to the AIF regime. It further suggested that such migration should be smooth and cost effective. Under the <keyword id="20198293" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vcf-regulations" source="keywords">VCF Regulations</keyword>, VCFs are required to liquidate their investments within three months from the expiry of their tenure, whereas AIF Regulations provide AIFs a Liquidation Period of 12 months for the said purpose. There is no provision in <keyword id="20198294" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vcf" source="keywords">VCF</keyword> Regulations for extension of tenure of VCF scheme. Therefore, any VCF operating beyond their tenure specified in the Private <keyword id="20198291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="placement-memorandum" source="keywords">Placement Memorandum</keyword> (PPM) is in violation of the VCF rules. Accordingly, Sebi suggested a new framework to facilitate VCFs to migrate to AIF Regulations, so that the proposed flexibility of Liquidation Period and the flexibility of dealing with unliquidated investments by opting for dissolution period / process, can be availed by VCFs. Under the proposed regulatory framework for migration of VCFs to AIF Regulations, a sub-category should be created under Category I - VCFs called Migrated VCFs. Such VCFs can migrate themselves within 6 months of the date of Sebi's notification in this regard. Sebi suggested that certain flexibilities under VCF rules should continue to be availed by migrated VCFs and accordingly the migrated VCFs should be exempted from the requirements of minimum investment requirement in AIF, minimum corpus size, maximum number of investors in a scheme, manner of calculation of tenure and audit of terms of PPM. Moreover, certain benefits of AIF Regulations that are not available under VCF rule should be extended to migrated VCFs.
