They were quick to identify that India needed a brand that gave a glimpse of the whole country in the shape of small souvenirs and travel products -- reflecting on its rich heritage and tastes. By integrating desi art into a forgein concept of souvenirs, Chumbak’s main purpose was to instil national pride and celebrate India’s diverse culture and vibrant colours. Officially launched in 2010, the brand has grown exponentially since its inception. It is a family to 150+ employees and has 70 retail stores. It sells home décor items, accessories and apparels. Chumbak on-boarded <keyword id="823990" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sara-Ali-Khan">Sara Ali Khan</keyword> as its first brand ambassador earlier this year to convey how it is now becoming a home and lifestyle brand and dominating offline and online presence. After launching a digital <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/advertising/brands/news/chumbak-launches-their-first-celebrity-brand-campaign-with-sara-ali-khan/articleshow/80586366.cms">campaign </a>with a Bollywood star, the brand is now aiming to increase its turnover by 100%. “We plan to double our turnover by the end of this year, our overall marketing spends are definitely increasing significantly. We are also reaching out to our loyal customer base and building up our digital presence including social media, and we plan to resume our in-store marketing once footfalls are back to pre-pandemic levels. We believe there is a strong overlap between the celebrity’s followership and our potential audience,” said Vasant Nangia CEO, Chumbak. For a brand that has grown purely on word-of-mouth, Chumbak will continue to reach out to its loyal customers base. Nangia said, “For 2021, we’re optimistic about pre-pandemic offline footfalls and hence building our offline business while continuing scaling online on our own as well as third-party platforms. We aim to invest in customer-centricity to allow for optimal journey mappings, repeat and loyalty interventions.” Since the COVID-19-induced lockdown last year, a majority of employees have been working from home. The furniture category moved from being a want to becoming a need. As a result, Chumbak also witnessed an increase in demand for its furniture and home decor. On which category brings in the lion’s share and COVID’s impact on the brand, Nangia said, “Our business is a clean 50:50 between our home and lifestyle ranges. However, given COVID-19 and its impact on our audience, we’ve seen a strong uptick in our home categories. As people spend more and more time in their house, they are developing new hobbies, be it gardening or cooking. Our pots and planters, silverware and crockery range is their preferred choice of purchase.” In 2019, Chumbak opened its 50th store and after COVID-19, it has been focusing on building an omnichannel presence. It is now planning to scale its online reach and partner with more third-party platforms. Nangia said, “In 2019, we opened a store a week landing at a total of 50 new stores so our offline growth trajectory was looking very strong. With the lockdown and store closures, we devoted more time and attention to scaling our online and back-end tech capabilities. We launched omnichannel in October last year which has allowed us to better manage our inventories and last-mile deliveries.” “We have witnessed rapid growth in e-com-enabled digital sales. In terms of revenue from each, it is close to 50:50 between the two channels. As walk-ins in offline continue to inch towards pre-pandemic levels, we’re hoping for a robust growth in next FY metrics,” added Nangia. During the lockdown, Chumbak also launched a new brand identity to stay in tandem with the global design language and trends. Telling us the idea behind this shift, Nangia said, “This change was a part of the shift in the positioning of the brand. We want to be represented as a globally inspired home and lifestyle brand which represents the growth not just the brand but also our customers have had in the last decade. We have received an overwhelming response from our ardent brand lovers and community.” This fiscal, Chumbak will increase its marketing spends, continue to focus on digital marketing and increase its in-store marketing.

<ul><li><keyword id="847170" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chumbak" source="Orion">Chumbak</keyword> to open over 50 retail stores in various cities of India in the next 2-3 years.</li><li>As the company will be opening new stores, it will be hiring more people across the country.</li><li>Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the home-grown brand had to close down around 17 of its offline physical stores located at multiple locations in India.</li></ul>Chumbak, which is a Gurgaon-based home and lifestyle brand, is planning to expand its offline footprint by opening over 50 new stores in various cities of India. The company is looking forward to opening stores in tier 2 cities and states like Jaipur, Tamil Nadu, and Northeastern states. “As things are now getting back to normal, we will also resume our expansion, maybe, in the next quarter or by this financial year, probably by re-expanding our retail stores. We need to go to at least 100 plus stores in the next 2-3 years,” told Vasant Nangia, chief executive officer at Chumbak to Business Insider in an interview. As the company will be opening new stores, it will be hiring more people across the country. “As we open more stores, we will be needing more people as store managers, merchandising staff, product staff and many more. And we will also be filing the small gap that we are left within the digital side as well,” Nangia highlighted. Nangia further told Business Insider that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the home-grown brand had to close down around 17 of its offline physical stores located at multiple locations in India. The number of retail stores came down from 70 to 53, which were majorly located in tier 1 cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. “We went back to the landlords (during COVID-19 lockdown) and had discussions with them. We asked them how do we bear the burden of closure and low traffic. Some landlords of large stores as well were not so understanding, so we were unfortunately forced to close because it wasn’t viable,” Nangia added. However, in the online segment, the company claims that it grew exponentially throughout the pandemic because most of its target audience is online. “For us, it was a big surprise and the only good thing, which kept us going was that the online sales really picked up during the pandemic,” he said further. Nangia also told Business Insider that in the last two years the company has also expanded its product categories by entering the beauty and home-decor space as well. “In the last two years, we have introduced a lot of new product categories to complete our offering and now we believe that it is fully complete in terms of categories,” he said. By Asim Kamal(Eds: SPECIAL) New Delhi, May 4 () The convalescent plasma therapy is no "magic bullet" to deal with coronavirus, and only large-scale controlled trials can ascertain its efficacy as part of the treatment strategy, top medical experts said on Monday, even as several states are considering the use of the therapy to treat critically-ill COVID-19 patients. The therapy involves taking antibodies from the blood of a person who has recovered from COVID-19 and transfusing those antibodies into an active coronavirus patient to help kickstart the immune system to fight the infection.The Health Ministry last week warned against its use, saying that the plasma therapy for treatment of coronavirus patients is at an experimental stage and has the potential to cause life-threatening complications.However, some state governments, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Maharashtra and Delhi have shown keenness for plasma therapy treatment, and the Centre has permitted few states to perform plasma therapy on a limited number of COVID-19 patients. Top medical experts feel it should not be looked upon as something that could make a "huge difference" in the treatment of COVID-19 and only randomised controlled trials can prove its efficacy as an important treatment strategy. Director of AIIMS, Delhi, Randeep Guleria said there have been very few convalescent plasma therapy trials as far as COVID-19 is concerned, and only in very few patients it has shown some benefit. "It is just one part of the treatment strategy. It helps improve the person's own immunity by giving what we call passive immunity because the antibodies in the plasma enter the blood and try to help fight the virus in the afflicted individual. It is not something which will dramatically make a difference," Guleria told . There is no study to suggest that "it is a magic bullet" or it will make a dramatic difference, but it is part of the armamentarium of treatment that physicians have along with other drugs, the senior pulmonologist said. ICMR has already called for a proposal and a large number of institutes have enrolled for the convalescent plasma therapy trials, he said. "Important issue to remember is that not everyone's plasma can be given, you also have to test the blood ----whether it is safe and also has enough antibodies. So, you have to have an antibody testing mechanism which is being done by NIV (National Institute of Virology), Pune, to show that the plasma you are giving has enough antibodies" Guleria said. Research should be done on a multi-pronged treatment strategy and should not be focused on only one strategy, the AIIMS Director said. "You will need to give it to a large number of individuals, more than 200 or 300 people and then analyse the data...We should go ahead in research mode giving it to more people and do a proper well conducted study so as to know one way or the other," Guleria said. Dr Vivek Nangia, Director Pulmonology, MICU and Sleep Disorders, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, said the therapy is only in the experimental stage, but it is promising as there is a clinical knowledge involved, and also some experiments and past experience behind it having been used for SARS and H1N1 epidemics in a limited manner. "Dire circumstances require desperate measures, you need to have an out of the box thinking and this is one of those measures, when nothing else is working you want to try this, there is no harm. It has its pros and cons," he told . Backing Guleria, Nangia also said, "larger randomized placebo-controlled trials are very essential only then we can make it a standard of therapy." These expert views come amid lack of definitive evidence in favour of or against the use of the convalescent plasma therapy.As per reports, a patient who was administered plasma therapy for the first time at a private hospital here was discharged last week after being cured, while the first person to undergo plasma therapy in Maharashtra had died in Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital. Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had said last week that the Delhi government will not stop clinical trials of plasma therapy to treat severally-ill COVID-19 patients as its initial results are good. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday said that with the ICMR nod, SMS hospital in Jaipur will start convalescent plasma therapy on COVID-19 patients from Monday, while Maharashtra, which had started the trials last month after a nod from the ICMR, is considering to continue with it despite the Union health ministry warning. Professor Rajesh Malhotra, Chief Trauma Centre AIIMS, said as of now, there is no concrete evidence of convalescent plasma therapy's usefulness."It essentially relies on the assumption that the body fires up its resistance in the form of chemicals called antibodies to fight the infection and those who have recovered have sufficient numbers in their convalescent plasma to fight the infection," Malhotra said. However, the degree of antibody response that a person throws and the timing are variables, making it difficult to have a predictable standard protocol, he said. It is too early to say if plasma treatment is the only way and it has its own risks also, the AIIMS professor said, adding that at present it is at best an experimental therapy and definitive answers cannot be obtained without large-scale trials.Dr Pankaj Kumar, Head of Critical Care Unit Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, echoed similar views, saying trials till now are too small to clear doubts about the therapy and large-scale trials should be done. "Theoretically speaking it should be helpful because we are taking the antibodies from a person who has had the infection. But it is still experimental... we have to weigh the risks and benefits," he told . Dr Atul Kakar, Vice-Chairman, Department of Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said it is very important to pick the right patient for being the donor as he has to have a very severe infection so that the antibodies are quite high and should be free from other viruses.
