A six-year-old <keyword id="2094" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pune">Pune</keyword> girl suffering from a heart disease wrote a letter to Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> seeking financial help which was promptly granted following which she underwent surgery and is now recovering. 
 <keyword id="3396568" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vaishali-Yadav">Vaishali Yadav</keyword>, hailing from a poor family, suffered from a hole in her heart. Her father, a small-time painter, was unable to afford an expensive heart surgery and had even sold her toys and bicycle to purchase medicines. 
 
Vaishali, a Class II student, then wrote a letter to PM Modi, requesting him to help her by explaining her health condition and her family's financial inability to meet the huge medical expenses. 
 
Within a week, the Prime Minister's Office alerted the Pune district administration, prompting them to help the girl. 
 
The district authorities traced the family's address and rushed the girl to city-based Ruby Hall Clinic where she was successfully operated free of charge on June 2. 
 
"Vaishali had a hole in the heart and after consulting various hospitals, we came to know that the surgery expenses were above Rs three lakh. However, due to our poor economical background and lack of below poverty line (BPL) documents, the surgery was not possible," said Vaishali's uncle Pratap Yadav, who is also a painter. 
 
"A month back, Vaishali was watching TV where she saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi and upon seeing him, she decided to write a letter to him, explaining the financial condition and about her ailment. 
 
"She wrote the letter and attached her school ID card with it and asked me to post it, which I did with an assumption that we would not get any reply. However, within a week, few people from the school, along with some district administration staff, came looking for us and later a meeting was called with Collector," Yadav said. 
 District Collector Sourabh Rao told PTI that they received the correspondence from <keyword id="6365387" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="PMO">PMO</keyword> on May 24 and immediately the family was traced. 
 
"Dr Shrikar Pardeshi, IAS officer and Director in the PMO, personally called me to inform about the letter and asked to help the girl accordingly," he said. 
 
"After coming to know that the girl required medical help, she was admitted to the Ruby Hall Clinic hospital and and was operated free of cost," said Rao. 
 
Dr Sanjay Pathare, Medical Director of Ruby Hall Clinic, said the girl was admitted to the hospital on June 2 and was operated on June 4. 
 
"The girl is fine and healthy now and was discharged yesterday," he said. 
 
Rao said a report of her surgery has been sent to the PMO by his office after she was discharged from the hospital.

Counting of votes got under way Tuesday morning for the three-phase Bihar assembly elections that may herald a new era in state politics, with <keyword id="43771" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Exit-polls">exit polls</keyword> predicting a victory for the RJD-led Grand Alliance. The exercise will decide the electoral fate of over 3,700 candidates who are in the race to win the 243 seats of <keyword id="9334401" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-state-assembly">the state assembly</keyword>. Counting started at 8 am at 55 centres spread across 38 districts amid tight security and precautions to avoid the spread of COVID-19 pandemic during the process. Over 57 per cent of about 7.30 crore electors have exercised their franchise in what is the first major election in the country since the onset of the pandemic. Votes are also being simultaneously counted for the Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha by-poll, which was necessitated by the death of JD(U) MP Baidyanath Mahto. Officials said the trends and results might be delayed a bit this time as the number of polling stations were raised from 72,723 earlier to 1,06,515, an increase of 46.5 per cent, to ensure adherence to social distancing measures in view of the pandemic. A total of 3,733 candidates are in the fray, including 371 women and a transgender. Most exit polls have predicted a rout for the ruling JD(U)-BJP combine and a resounding victory for the Grand Alliance (<keyword id="2838249" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahagathbandhan">Mahagathbandhan</keyword>) led by RJD's 31-year-old chief ministerial candidate <keyword id="6354578" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tejashwi-yadav">Tejashwi Yadav</keyword>. According to Chief Electoral Officer H R Srinavasa, central armed police forces have been deployed at the strong rooms, where the EVMs have been stored since the completion of voting, and the halls where these are being unsealed now. Of the state's 243 assembly constituencies, among the most keenly watched will obviously be Raghopur in Vaishali district from where Tejashwi Yadav is seeking re-election. Raghopur has been in the past represented by his parents Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, both former chief ministers. Nitish Kumar is a member of the state's legislative council and has not contested the assembly election. Tejashwi's elder brother <keyword id="6355331" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="tej-pratap-yadav">Tej Pratap Yadav</keyword> is contesting from Hasanpur in <keyword id="825547" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samastipur-district">Samastipur district</keyword>. Tuesday's counting will also decide the political fate of nearly a dozen of ministers. Bihar might be on the cusp of a major generational shift in politics as it braced for Tuesday's counting of votes for the assembly election, with most pollsters predicting a landslide for the five-party Grand Alliance led by the young RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. Counting will be taken up at 55 centres across 38 districts where the outcome will decide the fate of the Nitish Kumar government that has helmed the state for a decade and half. Most exit polls have predicted a rout for the ruling JD(U)-BJP combine and a resounding victory for the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) led by RJD's 31-year-old chief ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav, who has thrown down the gauntlet at redoubtable Nitish Kumar, the battle-scarred veteran more than twice his age. The Election Commission is making sure that the winds of potential change cause no disruption in the counting process. With much of the NDA's election narrative focusing on RJD's association with "jungle raj", an allusion to the alleged collapsed law and order during the 15 years when Lalu-Rabri ruled the state in succession, the fate of "bahubalis", leaders known for strong arm tactics, will also be keenly watched. Two of the most notorious criminal-turned-politicians- Anant Singh (Mokama) and Reetlal Yadav (Danapur)- are contesting on RJD tickets. A win for the RJD-led coalition will bring a redemption of sorts for Tejashwi Yadav whose leadership abilities were called into question after his party failed to win a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections last year. The NDA had won 39 of the 40 seats and one had gone to the Congress, an RJD ally. It may also revive the fortunes of the three Left parties--The CPI, CPI-M and CPI-ML--which were consigned to near oblivion over the past two decades. The five-party 'Mahagathbandhan' also comprises these three Left parties, which were a force to reckon with in the past. Election officials and district administrations face the daunting task of restraining supporters of political parties from crowding the counting centres amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Prohibitory orders will be be place outside the counting centres to prevent people from gathering in large numbers, officials said. According to Srinivasa, while 19 companies of the central armed police forces will be deployed at strong rooms and the halls where counting will take place, another 59 have been entrusted with maintaining law and order. Each company comprises roughly 100 personnel. Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Jitendra Kumar said Bihar Military Police and local police will also chip in while senior officials will keep a watch through display screens connected to CCTV cameras installed at the counting centres. NEW DELHI: A long and bruising election season will end on Monday with polling in 41 <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> seats that could have a crucial bearing on BJP's final tally. Today also marks the last chance for regional heavyweights Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party to check the saffron advance. 
 The 18 seats in east Uttar Pradesh that go to polls include Varanasi, where BJP’s prime ministerial candidate <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> is locked in a blockbuster battle with Aam Aadmi Party chief <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> and <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>'s local challenger Ajay Rai. 
 
The temple town has turned into a fortress with over 45,000 security personnel being deployed to ensure free and fair polls today. Senior police officers have descended here to personally assess the situation. Central paramilitary forces have been deployed in all the 1,562 polling stations which are also under CCTV coverage. 
 
The election took a bitter turn after BJP accused the DM and returning officer, Pranjal Yadav, of bias and demanded his removal after he controversially refused permision to Modi to hold a rally in the Muslim-dominated locality of Beniabagh. The EC strongly defended the officer but eventually appointed a special observer for the poll, whose result will be keenly watched across India. 
 
Also in the fray today is SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, looking to make a statement in Azamgarh, a constituency with a large number of Yadav and Muslim voters. 
 
Contest in UP could be highly polarized 
 
The contest in UP could be highly polarized with BJP accusing Mulayam of nurturing a “base of terror” — a thinly disguised code for minority appeasement while the SP boss has urged voters to remember all that he has done for them. 
 
BJP is hoping for a strong performance in the closing phase of the election as this will be essential to meet its target of 50 seats in the populous state. By the same measure, it is an opportunity for SP and BSP to work traditional caste equations in order to check Modi fair and square. 
 
In next door Bihar, similar calculations are at work on six seats with estranged allies BJP and Janata Dal (U) holding two seats each. This time JD(U) seems squeezed out of the contest and the clash is between BJP and the RJD-Congress combine. The seats include Gopalganj, the ancestral home of RJD chief Lalu Prasad. 
 
Of the seats in UP, SP holds six seats, followed by BSP with five, BJP with four and Congress with three. In West Bengal, 17 seats go to polls and of these, Trinamool Congress holds 14 seats, while Congress, CPI and Independent have one each. 
 
Stakes are fairly high for Trinamool that has to defend its seats and hopes to gain a few though it must contend with urban constituencies where there is a perceived drift away from it and BJP has emerged a new party of choice for voters. 
 Prominent leaders in the fray in the three stated include Congress's Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary (Behrampur, West Bengal), <keyword id="6356617" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="bjp-leader">BJP leader</keyword> Jagdambika Pal (Domariyaganj), Union minister RPN Singh (Kushi Nagar, both UP) and former minister and RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh (Vaishali, Bihar). 
 
There has been a record turnout of voters, surpassing the previous record in 1984, as 66.27% voting was reported in 502 Lok Sabha seats where polling has been conducted in eight phases that began on April 7. 
 
In West Bengal, prominent TMC candidates in the race are Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Dinesh Trivedi and Saugata Roy besides celebrities like actors Dipak Adhikari (Dev) and Tapas Paul. 
 Trinamool Yuva <keyword id="2540" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="President">president</keyword> Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, is also in the fray.
