Moderna is seeking FDA approval for a 4th COVID-19 vaccine shot for those aged 18 and above

Vijayan said till now, 78.03 per cent of the population above 18 years received the first dose of vaccination, while 30.16 per cent received both doses. The Chief Minister, while addressing the press after a COVID-19 evaluation meeting, said only two per cent of the active cases during September 3-9 in the state required oxygen beds and only one per cent got admitted to ICUs. Vijayan said 93 per cent of people above 45 years received the first dose of vaccine while 50 per cent received the second dose too. "During the period between September 3 to 9, there was an average of 2,42,278 active cases in the state of which only two per cent required oxygen beds and one one per cent got admitted in the ICUs," he said. Vijayan told the media that antigen tests will be conducted only for the purpose of medical treatment in the districts where 80 per cent of the population have been vaccinated with the first dose. "In such districts, RTPCR tests will be used to detect the infection," he said. After analysing the COVID-19 situation, the state government has decided to impose stringent lockdown restrictions in areas where the weekly infection population ratio was above eight per cent. Until today the restrictions were in wards of local self government bodies with WIPR above seven per cent. Kerala today logged 25,010 new COVID-19 cases and 177 deaths, taking the caseload to 43,34,704 and the death toll to 22,303. Health minister Veena George said 1,51,317 samples were tested in the last 24 hours and the test positivity rate was 16.53 per cent. Kerala to complete vaccination of all above 18 years by September 30: CM

<ul><li>A new study by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) recommends doling out vaccines to everyone above the age of 18 years from April 15.</li><li>Estimates show that it would still take another six to seven to vaccinate the whole country at a rate of 2.5 million doses a day.</li><li>Keeping the second wave of infections in check won’t only reduce the number of active cases but also reduce the impact of a potential third COVID-19 wave.</li></ul>In April, India began to vaccinate everyone above the age of 45 years but that still leaves a large chunk of its population out of the loop. Even if the country was to open up its vaccination programme to everyone above the age of 18 years from April 15, it would still hypothetically take another six to seven months to vaccinate the whole country. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) ran a study with numbers of the best case scenario with 2.5 million vaccine doses being administered daily. Their research shows that India needs to speed up its vaccination drive across the country if it hopes to come out ahead of the second wave of infections. In the last 24 hours, India has recorded a whopping 104,000 new COVID-19 cases, which is higher than ever before. The last biggest surge was on 17 September 2020 when 97,894 infections were recorded in the span of a single day. According to TCS and NITIE, keeping the second wave of infections in check won’t only reduce the number of active cases but also reduce the impact of a potential third COVID-19 wave. The need to cover more of the Indian population The Indian government began the roll out of its massive vaccination drive on January 16, this year. So far, it has managed to distribute around 7.9 million doses of the vaccine for its 1.21 billion strong population. It should also be kept in mind that COVID-19 vaccinations are a double-dose exercise. So many of the patients, especially those above the age of 60 and 45 who were only just initiated into the programme, are yet to receive their second dose. TCS and NITIE recommend that India should prioritise and accelerate the vaccination for the 130 districts, which were identified as ‘red zones’ during the first wave of the pandemic. “Once the vaccination is opened up for everyone above 18 years, around 230 million people — assuming 80% coverage — need to be vaccinated at the rate of 2.5 million per day across these 130 districts,” said the report. Moreover, the drug maker believes that the vaccine will be effective against the new mutations. “The Plasmid DNA platform also allows generating new constructs quickly to deal with mutations in the virus, such as those already occurring,” the company said in an exchange filing. The company plans to manufacture 10-12 crore doses of ZyCoV-D annually and is expected to be made available in September in India. The company also plans to seek approval for the two-dose regimen of the vaccine. Bharat Biotech's intranasal Covid vaccine approved by govt, to be available on CO-WIN

The government of India has made a major policy change allowing everyone above the age of 18 to get a jab of the COVID-19 vaccine from May 1, as India opens up the third phase of the world’s largest vaccination drive. To improve the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine, the government has allowed states to directly buy them from the manufacturers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a Press Information Bureau statement, said that the “government has been working hard from over a year to ensure that maximum number of Indians are able to get the vaccine in the shortest possible of (sic) time.” Vaccine makers can sell half of their production directly to the state governments and in the open market at a pre-declared price. The decision on setting the age limit in the distribution of the vaccine has been left to the respective state governments. The second wave of COVID-19 infections has been a lot severe in India. The total number of infections in India has crossed 15 million. Latest data showed that for the last five days in a row, there have been at least 200,000 people contracting the virus daily. The official death toll due to COVID-19 in India is 1,78,769, but many fear that it could be a lot higher. India’s health infrastructure has been way too short of what was needed to tackle the pandemic with minimal fatality. As the world’s largest vaccine maker, there was hope that India would be able to beat the lack of health facilities with timely jabs for a large chunk of the population. However, the Narendra Modi administration has come under severe criticism for its handling of the COVID-19 crisis, particularly, the second wave and the slow pace of vaccinations is one of the reasons.
