"The Board of Control for <keyword id="1521" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cricket">Cricket</keyword> in India (BCCI) and vivo Mobile India Pvt Ltd have decided to suspend their partnership for <keyword id="6354831" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-premier-league">Indian Premier League</keyword> in 2020," the press release stated. Vivo won the IPL title sponsorship rights for five years from 2018 to 2022 for a reported sum of Rs 2190 crore, approximately Rs 440 crore per annum. The two parties are now working out a plan in which Vivo might come back for a fresh three-year period starting 2021 on revised terms. However, a top BCCI official offered a different view. "Here we are talking about diplomatic tensions and you expect that after November, when IPL ends and before the next IPL starts in April 2021, there would be no anti-China sentiment? Are we serious?" a veteran BCCI official told on conditions of anonymity. The anti-China sentiment in the country peaked after the violent face off between the Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh. India lost 20 soldiers in the clash, while China also acknowledged unspecified casualties. The stand-off at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) caused outrage across India with several calls for boycott of Chinese companies and products. The BCCI is now likely to float a tender for new IPL title sponsors as mandated by its constitution. The glitzy T20 league starts on September 19 in the UAE, forced out of India due to the rising COVID-19 cases. The new development is in stark contrast to what came out of Sunday's IPL's Governing Council meeting, where it was decided that Vivo, along with all other sponsors, will remain on board. This was after BCCI had announced in June that all sponsorship deals pertaining to IPL will be reviewed in the aftermath of the clash at the Galwan Valley. However, after Sunday's meeting, there was a huge backlash on social media about BCCI holding on to Vivo. Both parties then began thrashing out an amicable separation plan, at least for this season. However, the end of this deal could spell losses for the franchises as they get a substantial share from the sponsorship pool. Half of the annual Vivo sponsorship money is distributed equally among eight franchises which comes to Rs 27.5 crore. "As of now, it will be very difficult for the BCCI to match the sponsorship amount at such short notice. Therefore both BCCI and the franchises should be prepared to lose out on some money -- BCCI more but each franchise from Vivo's exit will potentially lose 15 crore," the official said. "This year will be difficult for everyone but the show must go on," the official said. Gionee already had the rights for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and now with RCB, they have also signed up Kohli as the main sports brand ambassador. 
 
"Cricket and Bollywood are two religions in India. Today, a visibility in the IPL is as important for a company as it is to be there during Diwali," Arvind Vohra, the head of Gionee in India, told TOI.

As per reports, Gionee will be spending around Rs 75 crore on cricket in India this year, for front jersey for KKR and RCB. "Out of around 60 matches to be played in the IPL, we have now been assured of a visibility in at least 28 outings," Vohra said. 
 
Oppo, which is also seeing India as a major market, will be spending even more, having signed a 5-year contract for being <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/oppo-mobiles-becomes-the-new-sponsor-of-men-in-blue/articleshow/57518520.cms">the official sponsor </a>of the Man in Blue. Although there have been no official statements, BCCI sources estimate it to be Rs 1,079 crore.

In 2016, the title sponsor of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Premier+League&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">IPL</a> is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vivo+Electronics&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Vivo Electronics</a>. That means the league is now officially known as the <keyword id="215177" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Vivo">Vivo</keyword> <keyword id="6354831" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indian-Premier-League">Indian Premier League</keyword>. Just like the IPL, the history of IPL’s title sponsorship is also muddled in a bit of controversy, confusion and drama. 
 
Back in 2008, DLF, Indian's biggest real estate company, paid a hefty sum of Rs. 200 Crores (around $36.25 million), to own the title rights for the first five years of the tournament. However, after the given period, DLF decided not to renew its contract. This forced <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BCCI&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">BCCI</a> to issue a new tender, with a base price of Rs. 300 Crores. 
 
This was also the time when the match fixing scandal struck hard, and there was widespread skepticism about the future of the tournament. 
 
In the 2013 season of the IPL, Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and S Sreesanth were arrested over charges of spot- fixing. 
 
There were allegations that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Chennai+Super+Kings+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Chennai Super Kings </a>team principle Gurunath Meiyappan and <keyword id="13802" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rajasthan-Royals">Rajasthan Royals</keyword> co-owner Raj Kundra were involved in betting. 
 
The BCCI banned the three cricketers for life, CSK and Rajasthan Royals were banned from the tournament for two years and Meiyappan and Kundra, were banned for life. 
 
Anyway, Pepsi struck a new title sponsorship deal in 2012. The amount was almost double the original title sponsorship deal <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=DLF&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">DLF</a> signed back in 2008, and everybody was happy. Officials were positive that despite all the negative colours IPL had been painted in, the league will endure. 
 
The deal was clinched for a solid Rs 396.8 Crores (around $71.77 million) for the next five years (2013-17). <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Airtel&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Airtel</a>, India’s largest telecom company also bid Rs. 316 Crores (around $57.27 million), but was obviously outbid. 
 
However, in 2015, the beverage giant pulled out from a five-year deal that was to end in 2017. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=PepsiCo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">PepsiCo</a>'s decision to end its deal with IPL was reportedly caused by the spot-fixing scandal which shook the game in 2013. 
 
In 2016, mobile company Vivo replaced <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=PepsiCo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">PepsiCo</a> as the title sponsor of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Premier+League&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Premier League </a>(IPL), and the game continues.

IPL Sponsorships – How it changed
hands and the drama associated with it

This <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> season is going to belong to mobile handset makers, who will hog the most airtime during the matches on official broadcaster Sony. Mobile brands like Oppo, Vivo, Lava, Micromax and LYF are not only going to advertise a lot during the T20 league matches, but are also sponsors of six out of the eight playing teams. Other than this, another brand Intex also owns a team. 
 
Oppo has signed up as the presenting sponsor this year, which means that it would take 240 seconds per match, the highest ever time slot in the IPL. Similarly, the other two presenting sponsors -Vodafone and Amazon - have taken 210 seconds per match. 
 
Like this year’s mobile brands, the last season of the IPL belonged to the ecommerce majors like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon, CarDekho, Car-Trade, Paytm, Shopclues and Myntra, who brought around 23% of the total ad revenues for the broadcaster. 
 
"This year, the handset category is making up around 20% of our advertising revenues, the highest among all categories," says Rohit Gupta, president of Sony Pictures Networks. 
 
The reason why smartphone makers have overtook e-commerce companies is that the losses of some of the leading ecommerce players grew significantly over the past one year, forcing most of them to cut down on advertising costs. 
 
As per media planners, this IPL would give Sony around Rs 1,200 crore from sponsorship and advertising, as compared to just under Rs 1,000 crore in the last season of IPL.

Mobile handset makers to pay Sony around 20% of IPL ad revenue

Mobile company <keyword id="215177" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vivo">Vivo</keyword> today replaced <keyword id="54572" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="PepsiCo">PepsiCo</keyword> as the title sponsor of the high-profile Indian Premier League, a change necessitated by the beverage giant's sudden pullout from a five-year deal that was to end in 2017. 
 "The <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> title sponsorship right has been assigned to M/S Vivo mobiles. Vivo is to give the Bank Guarantee in next ten days," the <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> said in a statement announcing decisions taken at its all-powerful working committee meeting. 
 
PepsiCo's decision to end its deal with IPL was reportedly caused by the spot-fixing scandal which shook the game in 2013. 
 
Although the company did not come on record to specify the reasons but it was reported that PepsiCo felt the spot- fixing scandal had brought the IPL in disrepute. 
 
In the 2013 season of the IPL, Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and S Sreesanth were arrested over charges of spot- fixing. This was followed by allegations that Chennai Super Kings team principle Gurunath Meiyappan, and Raj Kundra, co- owner of Rajasthan Royals, were involved in betting.

 Among other decisions taken at today's meeting, <keyword id="69300" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="nike">Nike</keyword> was retained as the apparel sponsor of the Indian cricket team.

<ul><li>India is a critical market for <keyword id="215177" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vivo">Vivo</keyword> which plans to open around 600 stores in the next one year.</li><li>It is also soon coming up with a design center in the country which will also design <keyword id="6354775" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smartphones">smartphones</keyword> in the country.</li><li><keyword id="6574292" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nipun-Marya">Nipun Marya</keyword>, Director Brand strategy, vivo India tells us about how the brand is expanding its presence in India and making sure it gives its consumers the best experience.</li></ul>2020 has been a year when technology played a huge role in our lives. It helped us keep ourselves sane while living under a lockdown. It therefore became a year when smartphone almost became a lifeline for many of us. From consuming to creating content on our phones to even children attending virtual classes, our smartphones became a way of keeping us connected with the world. It is therefore not surprising when surveys told us that the smartphone market in India bounced back after the slump during the lockdown period. Data from Canalys showed that smartphone shipments in India recovered in Q3 2020, with a growth of 8% to 50 million units. The report revealed this was an all-time record for smartphone shipments in a single quarter in India. This year, after the worsening of relations between India and China, vivo pulled out of the Indian Premier League 2020 title sponsorship. However, this minor blip did not really lead to a decrease in the brand’s popularity. Nipun Marya, Director Brand strategy, vivo India tells us that the brand has seen a good bounce-back and has seen an increase of 25% during the festive season this year. The Canalys report also revealed that Vivo stood third in terms of smartphone shipments in India, growing 19% to ship 8.8 million smartphones. We spoke to Marya about the year gone by and brand’s growth strategy for the coming year. The impact of 2020 Despite it being a difficult year, the smartphone maker saw a good resurgence in demand in the unlock phase. The fact that smartphones became such an intrinsic parts of our life has helped the segment bounce back. Speaking about how the year has been so far, Marya said, “While we’re still not completely out of the pandemic situation, there’s encouraging news coming in of the vaccine and things have slowly started looking brighter. The good thing about the smartphone industry is that it has helped a lot of people, whether it was for entertainment or being connected with our friends and family, or working and in some cases, even education. Smartphones have really come to everyone’s rescue and helped us maintain our sanity during thes tough times. We are seeing that the industry has seen a reasonably good recovery when it comes to sales. And we are seeing good growth, about 25% over last year during the festive season.” However, considering the first few months were a complete lockdown, the brand has had to recalibrate its sales target this year. Speaking about how the industry has been performing, he said, “Overall at an industry level for the calendar year, I think there’ll be single digit de-growth this year. I don't think we’ll be able to match the 2019 levels, forget about growing. Accordingly, we’ve also readjusted our targets. So let’s see how November and December fair, because post December, we will get a clearer picture.” Vivo’s India story Vivo had entered India's smartphone market in 2012 with the launch the Vivo X1. Since then, Vivo has seen good growth in the country. It currently has a manufacturing facility in Greater Noida which employs around 10,000 people and has the capacity to produce over 3 crore smartphones annually. Marya also shared that whatever the brand is currently selling in India is made in India. “As far as smartphones are concerned, whatever we’re selling in India is being manufactured here. There’s nothing that we’re importing as finished good and selling in the market, he shared. On whether the brand has plans of further expanding its manufacturing capability in the country, Marya said, “Right now, our manufacturing unit is sufficient but going ahead, if more expansion is needed, we’ll certainly invest and expand more. We are very clear that we will continue to expand our mass manufacturing footprint here but we also don't want to be in a situation where we have excess capacity lying unutilized,” he added. Expanding offline presence At the start of the year, before the pandemic hit the market, the brand had plans of aggressively expanding its offline presence in India. However, despite the lockdown impacting some of its plans, the brand is still serious about setting up shop. For Vivo, offline is a very important channel, a bulk of our sales come from offline. We are also very clear that when it comes to offline, there is both quantity and quality of experience which consumers look forward to. Exclusive and experience stores really provide a differentiated brand experience. We are still very much looking forward to opening up more exclusive stores in the coming few months.” On how many stores they plan to open up in the next few months, Marya shared, “Currently we have around 450 stores. We are planning to open up more than hundred exclusive stores within the next 1 year.” Vivo’s marketing and its next phase of growth Vivo came out with its Diwali campaign recently which was all about spreading the message of joy and hope. The brand also launched a new product and promoted it aggressively. It also bought ad spots during the IPL. On whether its increased its spends this year, Marya said, “I won’t be able to comment whether we’ve increased or decreased our spends. But, like last year, this year too we have been aggressive in terms of marketing. We've done our spots in IPL which is a fairly expensive property. Therefore, whatever is required, as far as the business is concerned, we’ve gone full hog and supported the business and the brand.” Marya is also confident that like most other sectors, the next wave of growth for the brand will come from smaller cities. “Whatever sector you talk about, non-metros are leading growth and that's also true in the case of Vivo. Metros still remain in absolute terms the largest market, but in terms of growth percentage, it is certainly coming from non metros and that remains true for us,” he said. So will the brand look at expanding its offline presence in smaller towns? “Where we will open our next stores will depend on the business and market requirement. Till date, the 450 stores we’ve opened have been in both metros and non-metros,” he shared. For Vivo, in the global scheme of things, India continues to be a critical market and Marya shares that the brand will continue investing in the country to make sure it gives its consumers the best experience. In fact, it plans to set-up an <keyword id="230531" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Industrial-Design-Centre">industrial design centre</keyword> in India to not only develop devices locally but also design the phones in the country. “We are manufacturing all our phones here but after the centre comes up, we will also design the phones in India. Its an extremely important market for the brand and how importantly we take the market can very well be seen from the kind of investments we have done here so far,” said Marya.

The study reveals that defending champions Mumbai Indians emerged as the favourite team at the onset of the IPL, followed by RCB and CSK. E-Commerce brands were the biggest spenders before and during the IPL, with VIVO and Amazon Prime at the top of the recall hierarchy given their high media spends on the tournament. This was followed by the Durables &amp; Automobile sectors. Food delivery brands like Swiggy also enjoyed a high recall. The frequency of ordering remained high with close to 80% of respondents having ordered food online at least once during the match time. Dream11 was the highest recalled main sponsor, followed by Byju’s and PhonePe. An increase in the number of fantasy gaming apps was observed during the IPL, however, the majority i.e., three-fourths used it for playing fantasy cricket only. The overall impressions went up by 15% in the 1st week of the IPL which dropped back to similar levels during the last week of the IPL. Almost all the top brands saw an increased association with Personal and Collective benefits. Automobile brands such as Hyundai, Renault and Kia witnessed an increased loyalty conversion. Durable brands such as Voltas, Signify (Philips) and Havells also managed to increase loyalty conversions. The research was commissioned between April 2, 2021 to May 7, 2021, during the first leg of IPL 2021. The study encompasses 4500 online respondents across 10 cities in India, which gives a deeper understanding of how a larger-than-life platform like the IPL helps move mind measures. YouGov’s Cube philosophy (people, time and variables) coupled with Havas’ Meaningful Brands framework resulted in this customized quantitative structured questionnaire for an agile, real-time solution, allowing advertisers to track the impact on brand health parameters such as recall, familiarity and perception. HI-CRICKET 2021 not only enables brands to further bolster their meaningful connections with consumers but also identifies the most meaningful campaigns during IPL this year. This study establishes a direct co-relation between brand metrics and a high-impact and high-visible property like the IPL.
