The satta markets in Churu (Rajasthan) and Mumbai have predicted that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/up-exit-poll-voters-mesmerised-by-modi-bjp-likely-to-cross-magic-number/articleshow/57558736.cms">BJP will win</a> the <keyword id="6357713" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> elections, while <keyword id="6354953" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Punjab">Punjab</keyword> will get to see a tie between <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> and the <keyword id="6354944" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword>, with both getting the same number of seats. 
 As per the underground betting market in Churu, <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> will win 190-193 seats in UP, while SP-Congress alliance would follow with 125-128, leaving <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/BSP">BSP</a> a miserable with 65-67 seats. As per the Mumbai betting market, however, 198-201 seats would be won by BJP, 119-122 by SP-Congress and 62-64 by <keyword id="6355170" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSP">BSP</keyword>.

However, both betting markets feel the same about <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/punjab-exit-poll-aap-will-open-its-account-with-majority/articleshow/57558575.cms">Punjab results</a>, with both predicting AAP and Congress finishing with a tie after securing 53-55 seats each, leaving <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/bjp-sad-alliance-sweeps-chandigarh-civic-polls/articleshow/56082365.cms">BJPSAD</a> with just 6-7 seats. 
 
"The municipal elections in Maharastra cleared the uncertainty. It showed that despite demonetisation, people are voting for the BJP, which is expected to maintain this trend in UP," a Churu-based bookie told TOI.

Lok Sabha Elections 2019 : polling dates for UP

In run up to Uttar Pradesh polls in 2017, work on <keyword id="3429848" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-varanasi-bullet-train">Delhi-Varanasi bullet train</keyword> has been accelerated and it might just take two hours 40 minutes to cover a distance of 782 kilometres. 
 
This is a part of PM Narendra Modi’s strategy to depict a pro-development image in UP as the holy city of Varanasi is also his constituency. 
 
Meanwhile, the Delhi-Varanasi bullet train will pass through Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow and Sultanpur. 
 
A Spanish firm is conducting feasibility study of the high-speed rail corridor and is expected to submit its final report in November. 
Meanwhile, the project will be built at a tune of Rs 43,000 crore. 
 
However, an official told TOI the final cost will be worked out only after detailed field study of the finally chosen alignment. The possibility of operating double-decker high speed trains on this section is also being explored by the consultant.

The ongoing election for the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament, has had an unintended consequence. The country's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, is fast running out of beer. Ironically, Uttar Pradesh has the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-witnessed-38-surge-in-alcohol-consumption-in-seven-years-and-it-isnt-going-to-slow-study/articleshow/69249088.cms?utm_source=contentofinterest&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=cppst" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">highest number of alcohol drinkers</a> in the country. In January 2019, chief minister Yogi Adityanath <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/politics/uttar-pradesh-government-to-impose-0-5-gau-kalyan-cess-for-cow-protection-1843661.htm" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">imposed a 0.5% cess on alcohol</a> to fund the state's cow protection programme. Every time there is a change in taxation, the retail price changes, and so does the label on the product. Every brand has to get an approval for these changes from the excise department before releasing the product into the market. "Every April, new policy gets into force. Every time you get into it, there is a delay of about a month because they re-register all the labels. The files go up and down. It's an annual process which is really painful. But everybody knows about it, so they keep extra stock for these incidences. This year that process has got further delayed," the owner of a renowned national chain of bars told Business Insider on the condition of anonymity. High UP in the air The approval process is common to every state in India, but the delay is the longest in Uttar Pradesh (UP), according to him. In UP, the delay has been thrice as long this time as the excise department officials were busy with election duties, delaying approvals on new labels . So, if you walk into a bar or a wine shop anywhere in Uttar Pradesh today, very few brands are available, and most of them strong beers. This is an additional blow for bar owners because most people in India who drink at bars prefer milder beers.  This is a cumulative effect of a price hike, supply crunch in beer as a whole, and the non-availability of mild beer brands. "The new gau raksha (cow protection) tax is ₹5 per bottle of beer. It is quite severe considering beer is 95% water," he added. In India, beer consumed outside home is three and a half times more than the beer consumed at home. Perishing stocks What is worse for suppliers in the state, nearly 100,ooo litres of expired beer was destroyed in April. The stock was worth ₹3 crore (about $440,000). "Beer is the only perishable liquor. By law, you have to quarantine it and the excise guys come and destroy it," he added. The wait to bring new stocks to shelves could be longer as excise officials will only get back to their usual drill after the election, the results of which will be announced on May 23. If you are in UP, you are likely to get more stressed finding the beer of your choice before you get happy high. An Indian state is fast running out of beer due to the ongoing election

As the counting of the votes began on Thursday morning, the Bharatiya Janata Party was seen leading in the early trends in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur while the <keyword id="6354944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party" source="Orion">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> made an early headway in Punjab. As per the early trends in Uttar Pradesh, the saffron party was leading on 155 seats while Samajwadi Party was ahead on 97. The <keyword id="6356515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bahujan-Samaj-Party" source="Orion">Bahujan Samaj Party</keyword> didn't seem to woo the voters, as it was leading on only 6 seats. The Congress party continued to show its dismal performance and was leading on only 4 seats. The Assembly polls for 403 seats spread over 75 districts were held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7. More than 3.75 lakh voters exercised their franchise using ballot papers. The state's Chief Electoral Officer Ajay Kumar Shukla said that 84 counting centres had been set up across Uttar Pradesh. In Goa, the <keyword id="43771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exit-polls" source="Orion">exit polls</keyword> had tipped a keen contest between the ruling <keyword id="14666" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bjp" source="Orion">BJP</keyword> and the Congress and Goa Forward alliance, with neither being able to reach the magic figure of 21 in a 40-member state Assembly. However, the trends showed the grand-old party -- Congress -- ahead of its arch-rival BJP while the much-hyped AAP, as per the early trends, didn't seem to impress the electorate at all as it was not leading on any seat. Nearly 79 per cent voters cast ballots in the February 14 polls in Goa. In Punjab, the multi-cornered electoral battle is probably heading for a comfortable victory for the AAP as the early trends gave an edge to the Bhagwant Mann-led party over the ruling Congress. The Shiromani Akali Dal was coming as the third party. The exit polls had predicted a landslide victory for the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. A total of 1,304 candidates, including 93 women and two transgenders, are in the fray. The state recorded a voter turnout of 71.95 per cent, the lowest percentage compared to the voting percentage in three previous Assembly polls. In Manipur, as per the early trends, the saffron party is heading for a landslide victory. According to the election officials, around 89.3 per cent of the 20,48,169-strong electorate cast their votes in the two-phase election to the 60-member Manipur Assembly on February 28 and March 5. This year's voting percentage was higher than the 2017 and 2012 Assembly elections, when 86.4 per cent and 79.5 per cent electorate had exercised their franchise respectively. In Uttarakhand, even as the BJP is leading in the early trends, it is still hard to predict the results as the Congress party is not much behind. The new-entrant AAP, like Goa, has failed to make any impact on the voters so far. Early Trends: BJP leads in UP, Uttarakhand & Manipur; AAP in Punjab; Cong in Goa

<ul><li>Actors of an erstwhile era, Shatrugan Sinha and Poonam Sinha, are fighting for rival parties.</li><li>However, the husband and wife duo campaign for each other in respective constituencies.</li><li>This is not the first time in India that a married couple has shared a roof but not the same political affiliation.</li></ul>The Indian Parliament is full of colour. Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam Sinha are Bollywood stars of a bygone era, with over 300 films to their credit according to IMDB. In the ongoing Parliamentary elections, they represent two rival parties, the Indian National Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) respectively. The two parties are fighting each other in one of the country's most crucial states, Uttar Pradesh. Both parties tried to stitch a coalition to beat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi but the plans have not come to fruition yet. But that hasn't stopped the actors-turned-politicians from campaigning for each other. Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha had <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/shatrughan-sinha-defends-backing-wife-at-samajwadi-rally-says-it-was-his-duty-as-a-husband-2026047" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">campaigned for his wife in Lucknow</a>. His wife, Poonam, is going against a local heavyweight, and a national BJP stalwart past his prime, Rajnath Singh, who is also the serving union minister for Home Affairs. Lucknow is the capital of the country's most populous state, UP, and voting is underway. This was much after the coalition's talks with Congress, to outnumber the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, failed. However, that did not stop her from joining the SP, while her 72-year old husband <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/lok-sabha-elections-2019-pm-narendra-modi-is-my-friend-but-shatrughan-sinha-on-why-he-left-bjp-2021047" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">had already left the BJP to join the Congress</a> party on April 10. Confused much? The protagonists are not. Shatrughan Sinha, the Parliamentarian from Patna Sahib constituency in Bihar for the last ten years, left the BJP after the party decided to dump and nominate union minister for law and information technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad, from the seat. So he broke up from the party, which he was part of for 27 years, and joined the Congress at the behest of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, founded by Laloo Prasad Yadav, which is in alliance with Congress in another state, Bihar. Now, read the story again a few times. A whiteboard and a marker may come in handy in explaining the musical chairs that the Indian election can be, at times. Most often than not, both parties and candidates put the ability to win a seat ahead of ideology and, even, conflict of interest. This is not the first time that a husband and wife have shared the same roof but not the same political affiliation. <a href="https://www.rediff.com/news/column/why-j-b-kripalani-needs-to-be-remembered/20181124.htm" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Jivatram Bhagwandas Kripalani</a> was a long-time follower of Mahatma Gandhi, a Congress party member and a educationist in his own right. Meanwhile, his wife Sucheta Kripalani remained in the party served as Union minister in various portfolios, and became the first lady chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1963.
