These are the apps that you must have in your phones

Going by logic, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/bjps-victory-in-uttar-pradesh-just-established-five-socio-politicalfacts/articleshow/57606253.cms">demonetization</a> of November 8 last year by the government that resulted in taking off 86% currency from circulation would result in reduced economic transactions. And you won’t need a degree in economics from <keyword id="97117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-University">Harvard University</keyword> or too much of hard work to understand that lesser economic transaction translates into a<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/bjps-victory-in-uttar-pradesh-just-established-five-socio-politicalfacts/articleshow/57606253.cms"> lower GDP</a>. The critics had argued that this move by Modi-led government would result in a major crisis among the unorganized sector and domestic output, as both are cash-driven. The ruling party had explained that this measure was necessary to cleanse the system from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/bjps-victory-in-uttar-pradesh-just-established-five-socio-politicalfacts/articleshow/57606253.cms">black money</a> and move into a digital economy (that came later).

If this surprise wasn’t enough, yesterday’s stellar performance of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/bjps-victory-in-uttar-pradesh-just-established-five-socio-politicalfacts/articleshow/57606253.cms">BJP in the UP</a> state election was another shock. When political analysts thought <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> may lose vote share in the Indian heartland because of too many migrant labourers whose job was at stake, all credits to demonetization, the party pulled out a mega show. 
 
So is it true that demonetisation has actually paved way to victory for BJP both in GDP and elections? Well, a one word answer to these would be NO! But let’s start with analysis. 
 
 
 
What happened to the GDP count? 
Let’s not make our self ‘<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/bjps-victory-in-uttar-pradesh-just-established-five-socio-politicalfacts/articleshow/57606253.cms">anti-national</a>’ by saying the numbers of GDP by CSO were false. Rather let’s put some logic. 
Firstly this GDP indicates that it’s higher by 7% in FY17, when pitted against Q3 of FY16. The government has taken into account the earlier higher Q3 of FY16 as the qGDP has been revised downward by 0.3 percentage points. In no way, this GDP is the comparison between this quarter and the last. 
 Secondly we need to analyse the profits of <keyword id="6384972" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rabi">Rabi</keyword> crop and Kharif crop. Crops sown in October- November would be harvested in March and April and this is Rabi crop. Whereas, Kharif crop is the one grown in June-July and harvested in September. The crop of Q3 FY17 was the one planted in June last year. A heavy monsoon last year has yielded an amazing harvest, which resulted in a major agro output and thereby increasing the GDP. To know the actual effect of demonetization, we would need to wait till rabi crop is harvested in mid this year. 
 
Also the methodology to calculate GDP trends is quite unique as the past numbers are counted and an estimate is done. At a time, when the RBI is still trying to find how many notes are being printed and fed into circulation, it’s impossible to figure out ACTUAL numbers. The organized sectors didn’t feel much impact of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/bjps-victory-in-uttar-pradesh-just-established-five-socio-politicalfacts/articleshow/57606253.cms">GDP because those are mostly digitized</a>. Thus it is well understood that the informal sectors would never be able to gauge the losses it experienced because of demonetization. 
 
 
 
What happened to the election results? 
It’s not essential to find out how much black money was cleansed from the system. As an unwritten norm, rural voters outnumbered urban ones by leaps and bounds. And this is where BJP played well. Instead of driving the point home on black money, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/bjps-victory-in-uttar-pradesh-just-established-five-socio-politicalfacts/articleshow/57606253.cms">BJP has made the masses understand</a> that rich people have suffered a lot. The labourer waiting in the bank line to return old notes was made to believe by various instruments of democracy that the rich people have been stripped off their wealth. I remember, when returning home at a Noida locality where plenty of flats are being made, the driver of the cab smirked and said, the empty flats in this region won’t be sold for next 3 years because rich people have no money left. Modi has amazingly played the hero who has stopped black marketers, filthy rich and unaccounted money hoarders in one go. And to appreciate this stance, audience clap and voters do the needful.

victory? It actually did but in a twisted way

Marketing trends are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/6-things-every-small-business-owner-should-invest-in/articleshow/48917823.cms">crucial to any business’ success</a> and as the world is becoming more interactive, certain trends have been left by the wayside. BTL (Below the Line) and TTL (Through the Line) have definitely had their time under the sun, but there are some companies that want to get back to the traditional method of ATL, which is ‘Above the line’. 
 
For those who are unfamiliar with this concept, it is essentially the art of introducing a non-interactive advertisement. In other words, a <a href="http://www.revenuebuilderblog.com/2013/10/atl-btl-ttl-marketing.html">method of advertising that does not rely on customer interaction</a>. Some of the most popular examples of ATL include, Television Advertisements, Vertical Banners and Newsprint/Ads. 
 
There are several startup companies listed on the <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.urbanclap.urbanclap&amp;hl=en">Urban Clap</a>, and even home service companies that have managed to bring back ATL, but we are only going to list five of the most popular lot. 
 
Machine Zone 
This America-based company has developed several free mobile games, including the ever popular “Game of War: Fire Age”, which has taken Android, Apple, and Amazon’s Kindle by the storm. It recently purchased the old Facebook Headquarters in Palo Alto and since the launch of Game of War, they became one of the top 5 game apps across all stores. The company has utilized ATL advertising by producing several television commercials, all of which have gone viral in one way or the other. This form of ATL advertising has brought Machine Zone a considerable amount of success and there is plenty of reason to believe it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. 
 
LetGo 
If you have been on the internet any time in the last 20 years, you know that Craigslist and eBay have long been the major contenders in the online classifieds ring. It seems that there is no way to topple them as many have tried but LetGo has come pretty close. Having <a href="http://fortune.com/2015/09/03/letgo-ebay-funding/">raised more than one hundred million dollars in funding</a>, the Barcelona-based startup, co-founded by Alec Oxenford, has created an application that allows individuals to simply take pictures of their potential merchandise and post them online with little or no effort. While this is definitely an improvement over the eBay method, they might not have gotten quite as far as they have without their outstanding television commercials that provide a very humorous twist on online buying/selling. 
 
Palantir Technologies 
This private American Software company specializes in the fine art of data analysis. In the beginning, having been founded in 2004, Palantir’s first clients were federal agencies, which mean that advertising was not entirely necessary. Now it has expanded to several other industries, both the financial and healthcare industries. This alone has made it more and more necessary for the company to branch out and make use of ATL forms of advertising. 
 
Domo 
What we have here is a form of Business Intelligence, or BI, essentially delivering a service to companies that allow them to change the way that they run their business. In other words, you have a company that provides all of the benefits of information technology and business data without the involvement of IT. If you have ever tried to run any sort of company, then you know just how difficult it can be to involve an IT department and you are quite aware of the expense involved. Domo, which translates to ‘Thank you’ in Japanese has long been providing outstanding services, and their ATL advertising model has helped them to bring in more business is an industry that failed to deliver actual value for decades. 
 
KingsIsle Entertainment 
Anyone who happens to be in the video gaming scene <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidewalt/2012/12/06/kingsisle-entertainments-path-to-video-game-victory/">knows what KingsIsle is</a>, and they know that it was formed in February of 2005 which makes it just over five years old. Some of the company recruits include Tom Hall, the Co-Founder of ID Software and J. Todd Coleman of Wolfpack Studios. The idea behind KingsIsle is to create family friendly games, one of which is the ever popular Wizard 101. These games allow children to enter the MMORPG scene without exposing them to the toxic player based that they would normally find in such a community. One of the most interesting things about this game s that it does use ATL advertising which is unusual for a game that relies so heavily on the interaction of the players. The form of ATL used here is television advertising which typically involves testimonials given by current players, those being both the children and parents that play together. While other companies might stick with TTL for this type of product, KingsIsle has definitely found a way to leverage ATL and bring in new business.

#StartupAlert: 5 startups that revived ATL marketing trends

Companies and startups are ready to raid engineering and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=B-school+">B-school</a> campuses across India this placement season, adding to the fierce war for talent already raging between large e-Commerce companies and established old-world recruiters. 
 
The startups which are looking for fresh talents include ShopClues, LocalOye, Urban-Clap, PropTiger, Indus Insights, MyRefers, CodeNation, Embibe, Jombay, Lybrate and ShadowFax. 
 
Moreover, a survey of 11 startups suggests they will step up overall <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=campus+hiring+">campus hiring</a> to 770 students from the Class of 2016 compared with only 250 that they hired from the last batch. 
 
Bulk of this hiring will be across top engineering colleges and B-schools, including Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management. 
 
Don’t be disappointed if you are not studying in the above mentioned institutes as a handful will also recruit at leading undergraduate colleges including Shri Ram College of Commerce, Lady Shri Ram College and St Stephen's, and design schools such as National Institute of Design and National Institute of Fashion Technology. 
 
Now comes the most interesting part- salary! Average salaries offered by these startups range between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 18 lakh at engineering colleges and B-schools, say campus sources. Prop-Tiger, for instance, is paying upwards of Rs 15 lakh plus benefits at tech schools; CodeNation will pay around Rs 24 lakh. 
 
At least three of these startups — Lybrate, LocalOye and ShadowFax — are first-timers on campus while others, at the very least, are doubling last year's numbers. In some cases, hiring targets are going up five-fold or even 16-fold compared with last year. 
 
The strategies behind the hiring are discussed below: 
1. Depending on the kind of institutes, students are being hired for a variety of roles: from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=software+development+engineers">software development engineers</a>; core management &amp; data scientists; product, operations and marketing; merchant acquisition and servicing, to human resource management, product and graphic designers and even entrepreneurs in residence. Sanjay Mehta, a Mumbai-based angel investor who participated in and led 11 angel deals in 2015, says the reason why startups are so gung-ho about <keyword id="511161" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="campus-hiring">campus hiring</keyword> is because they want to put this talent to work on cutting-edge technology and new delivery models. Not surprisingly, several institutes where placements have started, including Birla Institute of Technology &amp; Science-Pilani and <keyword id="75110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="NITs">NITs</keyword>, are seeing these startups go head-to-head with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=traditional+recruiters+">traditional recruiters</a> to hire talent. At other B-schools and <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> where pre-placement offers (PPOs) have started flowing in, it is again the startups that are leading the pack. 
 
2. Much high in numbers: The numbers speak for themselves. If ShopClues is revising its hiring intake from around 100 last year to 180-250 this time, realty portal PropTiger is doubling its target to 50. Even five-month-old B2B (business-to-business) hyperlocal delivery startup ShadowFax, which raised $300,000 from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Snapdeal">Snapdeal</a>'s founders and others in August followed by a $8.5-million Series A round by Fidelity's proprietary investment arm Eight Roads Ventures barely a month later, is looking to hire from IITs, <keyword id="46923" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIMs">IIMs</keyword> and other leading management institutes for its technology, data science and operations teams. 
 
3. Tapping more institutes: In the process, these companies are reaching out to many more institutes this year. "If there is a campus that attracts bright minds of the country, we want to be there. This includes other engineering colleges as well as top colleges in economics and commerce," says Saurabh Sharma, founder &amp; chief executive officer of Indus Insights. The Big Data firm made 40 offers last year, mostly at the top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras). This year, it plans to make 100-plus, including at NITs (Trichy, Warangal, etc), SRCC, LSR, Christ College and Indian School of Business. 
 Similarly, Delhi-based mobile services marketplace UrbanClap, which hired 30 business development and operations specialists from <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> last year, is extending its reach to several new institutes, including <keyword id="6431668" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Delhi">IIT-Delhi</keyword> and IIM-Ahmedabad as it gears up to take on 80-100 this year. 
 
Salaries apart, the other drawing factors include the opportunity to work on challenging problems. "We don't have any glass ceilings. Freshers could be running entire teams within six months of joining," says Aditi Avasthi, founder and CEO, Embibe. "Students are opting for startups aggressively as some of the roles offered by them are quite challenging and inclined with their aspirations," sums up Rahul Katyal, placement manager at IIT-Bombay.

At various points the violence has spilled into Israel, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey.It's the contemporary Middle East's defining event, and one of the deadliest wars of the 21st century.But Syria and the surrounding region were a far different place on March 16, 2011, when Reuters' Beirut bureau <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/15/AR2011031504576.html">filed a brief report headlined</a> "Rare political protest held in Syria, witnesses say."On January 14, 2011, popular protests had unseated Tunisian dictator Zine el Abdin ben Ali, who ruled the country since 1989. Less than a month later, on February 11, Hosni Mubarak's three decades in power in Egypt came to a rapid and dramatic close after less than a month of popular protest. On March 17, the UN Security Council <a href="http://www.un.org/press/en/2011/sc10200.doc.htm">voted to authorize military action</a> to protect civilians and enforce a no-fly zone in Libya, a decision that led to Muammar Gaddafi's ouster the following August.The day of that Reuters report, it seemed like just about anything was possible in the Middle East - even in Syria, where the Assad regime maintained one of the region's strictest police states. The topic: "Is American Conservatism hostile to women?"When we shuffle into the standing space reserved for the press, the room is full and the the C-Span cameras are already rolling. On the right is Ann Coulter, conservative author, political commentator, and vocal supporter of Trump, joined by Dr. Carol Swain, a conservative Vanderbilt professor who <a href="https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/01/19/uproar-over-vanderbilt-professors-anti-muslim-column">caused an uproar</a> when she penned an allegedly <a href="http://www.tennessean.com/story/opinion/contributors/2015/01/15/charlie-hebdo-attacks-prove-critics-right-islam/21809599/">anti-Islam newspaper column</a>. On the left is Sally Kohn, a liberal political commentator who's ranked the 35th most influential LGBT person in the media (though she insists she's not the 35th gayest - she's much higher on that measure). Next to her is Dr. Janus Adams, a progressive author and the founder of BackPax children's media.Smiling in the middle is Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker, the moderator, who assures us that she'll be as neutral as Switzerland. The debate begins, and the panelists have hardly finished their opening statements when the conversation veers immediately toward abortion. The conservatives invoke the horrors of murderous abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell while the liberals beseech the government to keep its hands out from between a woman's legs. It isn't immediately clear who is winning the political argument. The crowd is young, urban and diverse - the liberal burns get louder cheers than the conservative ones.But Coulter is probably the funniest. She dominates much of the conversation, arms gesticulating wildly, sipping from an enormous Starbucks cup that may or may not actually contain coffee. Unable to properly manage the panelists, she cuts in occasionally with her own views, prompting an audience member to shout, "What happened to Switzerland?""I'm taking a break from Switzerland!" she cries.And they've barely even started on Trump.Coulter reminds us she was one of the first to throw her support behind the controversial businessman. She praises his penchant for political incorrectness and reminds us that he insults everyone - black or white, male or female, gay or straight, disabled or non-disabled. He's developed a "platonic ideal of non-discrimination."Kohn, meanwhile, doesn't want to tell her seven-year-old that she shouldn't talk like President Trump. Trump doesn't discriminate - unless you're Mexican or Muslim. Over the next hour and a half, we hit guns, Black Lives Matter, abortion some more, immigration, Libya. Hillary Clinton and her emails are fiercely decried, Donald Trump and his wall and his Muslim ban are forcefully shouted down. I think to myself that it's probably sexist to call it a catfight - but at times, there's really no other word for it.The audience is getting rowdier. I'm standing near the bar, where I can observe the steady stream of drinks fueling some spectators' unsolicited participation in the debate. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Mark Wilson/Getty ImagesDonald Trump.</div></div></div>Then, the conversation takes an interesting turn when Coulter compares Black Lives Matter founder Al Sharpton to former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke. It's unfair, she says, that Trump has had to denounce Duke, who he has never met, "117 times" - and Duke's speeches have never led to anyone's death. Hillary, on the other hand, has not had to denounce Sharpton, whose speeches have prompted riots and even deaths. The audience erupts - did Coulter just defend the Ku Klux Klan? - but, like Trump, she doesn't walk back on her controversial statement. She defends it until the debate moves somewhere else.Later, when we <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ann-coulter-donald-trump-vice-president-2016-7">interview her</a>, she doubles down on her comment."I'm drawing the conclusion... that when Al Sharpton gives a rally you have people die, get mugged, have their cameras smashed, be robbed. That never happens at a David Duke event or I'd promise you, I'd know about it," she said. "I think I'm being very clear. David Duke gives a speech. Al Sharpton gives a speech, people die. That's what I'm saying. Those are facts."She has a few other tidbits for us as well: Israel should be placed as a buffer between the US and Mexico. Kohn, who we spoke with before the event, is calm, patient, and - to the chagrin of Coulter's brand of conservatism - politically correct. In lots of political debates, there are moments of sunshiney goodwill and agreement between the arguing parties. Think of this year's Republican debates, when the war of words between Donald Trump and Jeb Bush could only be halted by the reminder that, yes, everyone on the stage would be a better president than Hillary Clinton.But this time? Not really. Swain tells Kohn that she likes her and thinks she has the best intentions - but Hillary Clinton still hates America. No one will admit that the other side's presidential candidate really has the country's interests at heart. I'm a millenial. I can't remember a time when American politics weren't incredibly polarized. But this debate seemed to me like a pretty good representation of how each side has trouble hearing anything the other is saying. At the very end, a somewhat subdued Parker asks us to cheer for who we think will win in November. The responses are eerily similar to the candidates themselves. I went to see Ann Coulter debate Sally Kohn on Trump in New York City - and it was nuts

Steel magnate Andrew Carnegie once said that he who dies leaving behind many millions will "pass away unwept, unhonored and unsung." That philosophy took root in much of the last century, with major philanthropists giving vast fortunes in their later years to libraries, museums, hospitals and other institutions devoted to the public good.
But donors today aren't taking any chances. They are flexing philanthropic muscle at a younger age than their predecessors. At many top business schools, students are integrating the practice of <keyword id="6495681" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Philanthropy">philanthropy</keyword> into education early on, and donors are often beginning to share substantial wealth long before accumulating the full measure of it.
Of the five biggest philanthropic gestures of 2012, three came from couples under the age of 40, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. A party in New York earlier this month celebrated philanthropic heroes Trump and Clinton -- Eric Trump (third child of Donald and Ivana Trump) and Chelsea Clinton (daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton) -- who were among the 20 donors under 40 honored at the New York Observer's First Annual Young Philanthropy Event.
Are business and philanthropy joining forces earlier than before because technology is trumpeting socially conscious causes into people's consciousness at a younger age? Or have the sins of Wall Street in recent years forced business to take on a more altruistic hue in order to prove to customers -- and other stakeholders -- that business can be beneficent as well as profitable?
"Business is almost trying to rebrand itself," says Wharton marketing professor <a href="https://marketing.wharton.upenn.edu/profile/204/">Americus Reed</a>. "I am seeing, institutionally and in terms of overall values individually with the students, that the whole Wall Street crisis caused business schools to reevaluate their own priorities and tell a different story. It's okay to make money -- but also, give back. You don't go to Wharton, get a job on Wall Street, then go to work at a hedge fund and retire at 40. That whole M.O. (modus operandi) is out the window."
Melissa Berman, president and CEO of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, says that in the work they do, "we see that donors are not waiting to get to retirement age to start thinking about philanthropy, but are making it a much more meaningful part of their lives earlier than previous generations." For younger donors, it's not only about giving money. "I think there is a growing sense that the solutions to social problems are going to come from active engagement with nonprofits -- from contributing expertise, knowledge and networking. The question is, what else you can do besides write a check or write a check that clears after you're dead?"
Wharton management professor <a href="https://mgmt.wharton.upenn.edu/profile/1366/">Michael Useem</a> sees many factors behind the trend toward giving back, including the example set by the enormous transfer of wealth -- tens of billions of dollars -- by investor Warren Buffett and Microsoft founder <keyword id="45830" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bill-Gates">Bill Gates</keyword> to their foundations. "Their two acts have really been like thunder claps out there in terms of shaking up a world that would not normally have thought about giving away money at that level," he says. "The size of those two gifts and the impact has been just huge. And so the question is, how can you do something that might be, for you, equally consequential?"
Berman sees broader societal changes giving philanthropy a larger presence in business school. "I think that the last financial crisis as well as the Occupy Wall Street movement and Occupy around the world raised the issue of income inequality. Many people, including [those] who are not progressive at all, began to think about what that means to free enterprise."
Whatever the driver, some say the concept of giving has become core to identity. Notes Reed: "Students are saying, 'I want to be a captain of industry, but I don't want to be out there just chasing materialistic objects. I need something deeper. I need self actualization in addition to the usual metrics of success in business.'"
Philanthropy Goes to School
Many institutions these days are exposing students to social impact and philanthropy. If learning by doing teaches best, a group of students in a University of Pennsylvania urban studies class dabbled at a decidedly professional level in 2010 when they were entrusted with $100,000 -- in real money -- to give away. The funds came from the Ft. Worth, Tex.-based Once Upon A Time Foundation, which made similar grants to 12 other colleges. It allowed the class to undertake the same due diligence required of foundation and corporate-giving officers, and have real-life debates over issues like accountability and mission.
In 2011, Doris Buffett, older sister of Warren, created the Learning by Giving Foundation, which offers $10,000 grants to undergraduate courses across the U.S. to re-gift. The program perpetuates two classes of beneficiaries -- the students, who are inculcated in philanthropy by going through the process, and the end-use charities.
Dozens of MBA and undergraduate business programs now offer philanthropy studies, either as part of course work or in distinct degree programs. Thirty-five courses involving philanthropy are offered in the U.S., according to the Aspen Institute Center for Business Education. These include "Strategic Philanthropy" at Stanford, "Philanthropic Foundations" at Yale and a host of courses on marketing, ethics and organizational dynamics that integrate philanthropy into a multidisciplinary approach with public policy or other departments.
The education sector has just gotten its first freestanding school of philanthropy. Indiana University is now offering a bachelor's, master's and PhD in philanthropic studies, with the first diplomas to be handed out next month. This school -- which was started in 2012, but built on a program that began developing in 1987 -- has been renamed the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, in recognition of the pharmaceutical family's long patronage of philanthropic studies.
"If the attitude stayed, 'We're all about making money,' then business schools would be ignoring the other part of what their students are going to be out doing when they are finished with school," says Eileen R. Heisman, president and CEO of the National Philanthropic Trust, a suburban Philadelphia <keyword id="6351" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="charity">charity</keyword> and donor-advised fund with $1.7 billion under management. Graduates may land in the corporate-giving department of a bank, for instance, and need to understand the evolution that has taken place in those offices in the past decade from simply making grants to the local orchestra or museum to aligning giving with corporate goals -- a bank supporting programs of business literacy, for instance.
"Corporate giving has become more of a strategic function, which means it is to be directed by the company's interests and not by the personal preferences of top management," says Useem. "In that sense, corporate giving has become a more disciplined function. It's probably a good idea to have some course work that prepares students for that."
Some in-school strategies have attracted attention for their creativity. Wharton management professor <a href="https://mgmt.wharton.upenn.edu/profile/1323/">Adam Grant</a> took a page from Donald Trump's TV show "The Apprentice," leading a series of philanthropy charettes for MBA, undergraduate and law students and challenging them to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation through raffles, auctions of signed items from athletes, donations from restaurants and the like. The immersion experiences have spread to other colleges, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars, and Grant -- author of a new book titled, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Give-Take-Revolutionary-Approach-Success/dp/0670026557/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1366749632&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=give+and+take">Give and Take: A Revolutionary approach to Success</a> -- has said these moments are among the most gratifying of his professional life.
"From the perspective of positive organizational scholarship, experiential activities like the Make-A-Wish challenge may enable students to develop, express, and sustain prosocial identities as giving, caring, helpful, or compassionate individuals," he wrote in a paper reflecting on the program. "The activities open up pathways for connecting with potential beneficiaries in need, mobilizing collective efforts to help these beneficiaries, and embedding these efforts in a visible, domain-specific role that translates the abstract notions of caring and compassion into more vivid, tangible behavioral acts."
"I think it was pretty powerful," says Guy Viner, 21, a Wharton junior whose team raised $12,000 last spring to send a 17-year-old Hodgkin's Lymphoma patient to the Summer Olympics in London. "It brings it down to a practical level. We tried to tell [the patient's] story to as many people as we could. He liked eating Butterfingers, so we sold Butterfingers outside of [local restaurant] Smokey Joe's."
Heisman, who is also a lecturer in Wharton's Graduate Leadership Program, says students are skilled at bringing entrepreneurial ideas to philanthropy. But even those well prepared in class can be surprised by the conditions on the ground. "They are sometimes shocked, because they are not used to seeing organizations without resources at their fingertips," she says. "In B2B and B2C, you can borrow money; the flow of money is familiar to them. In nonprofits, you don't produce a widget; you offer a social good, and the people who need it don't have the money to buy it. Social capital is so different from private capital. It's really startling to them."
But not all philanthropic ventures are traditional nonprofit charities. Katherina M. Rosqueta, founding executive director of Penn's Center for High Impact Philanthropy, points to the promise of hybrid models -- such as for-profit companies with a social purpose -- that offer "the best of what the financial capital markets can bring, and move beyond grants to create social change."
Others concur. One of the things schools could be doing a better job of is clearly communicating to students the full range of philanthropic routes -- "to say to them, 'A lot of you want purpose and to make a contribution with your work. Here are some role models,'" says management professor <a href="https://mgmt.wharton.upenn.edu/profile/1333/">Katherine Klein</a>, vice-dean of Wharton's Social Impact Initiative. "Maybe you have a traditional career and serve on nonprofit boards, or a non-traditional career in special enterprise, or, maybe you go into impact investing, or maybe you are an innovator within a large, established company that doesn't have a social mission. There are many ways to do this."
"I think it's about philanthropy in the broadest sense," says <a href="https://lgst.wharton.upenn.edu/profile/1141/">Diana C. Robertson</a>, Wharton professor of legal studies and business ethics. "It's giving back, it's being a good citizen, understanding what your reputation is within a community, your school, your workplace, your neighborhood. Our students are really interested in this."
Is Philanthropy Increasing?
The fact that philanthropy is diversifying into these hybrid models might make its full impact harder to measure. The numbers show that philanthropy has hovered between about 1.8% and 2.3% of GDP, according to the Congressional Research Service and other sources. That would mean the enormous gifts made by Gates and Buffett have not released a torrent of largess that has changed the scale and impact of philanthropy.
"Middle-income people give a huge amount of money, and I don't know that it really speaks to them," says Heisman. "It's like a movie star who has five houses and a castle in France. It doesn't mean anything to me."
It's not surprising that philanthropy has not gone up as a percentage of GDP, says Kim Meredith, executive director of the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, since most giving -- 71% -- comes from individuals. "I think you see these levels of consistency, and that is because for Middle America and lower-income America, their income has not gone up, and they are the people giving the gifts," she says.
Moreover, adds the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors' Berman, "if you think about the amount of wealth lost in the last economic downturn [along] with persistently high unemployment, the fact that giving has not plummeted is just remarkable."
On the other hand, in the few short years since Buffett and Gates made their "Giving Pledge" public in 2010, 105 billionaires have signed on. Bloomberg LP founder Michael R. Bloomberg, Oracle Corp. co-founder Larry Ellison, Huntsman Corp. founder Jon Huntsman and wife Karen, film entrepreneur George Lucas, investor Ronald O. Perelman, Facebook chairman Mark Zuckerberg and others have now committed to giving away the majority of their fortunes before or at their deaths, so the full force of the effort has yet to be felt. 
Some of these billionaires are choosing to channel their gifts though their own foundations or community foundations, which means that true impact waits until distributions find their way to causes. Andrew Carnegie might approve. The scale of this transfer of wealth dwarfs his generosity. At his death in 1919, he had given away about $350 million -- $4.7 billion, adjusted for inflation. Gates and Buffett together have given 10 times that amount, or just over $45 billion.
New Generation Wants Proof
What is keeping philanthropy from budging beyond 2.5% of GDP? It's not decreased awareness. Social media makes it easier than ever to learn about disaster and famine -- or endowment and building campaigns at one's alma mater. Fidelity launched a widget this month that allows clients to initiate grants from donor advised funds directly to the Red Cross, Boston Symphony Orchestra and other recipients without having to leave that charity's website. More information than ever is accessible about best practices in philanthropy and a potential recipient's worthiness.
Even so, more research is needed. What individual and institutional donors "care about that is still missing from the market is information around effectiveness, because nobody wants to waste their money," says Rosqueta. "You want to feel confident that your money is going to make a difference. That is exactly the problem our center was established to address. Until people have confidence that their money is having an impact, you're not going to see the increase in philanthropy that people would hope for."
The next generation will likely bring its zeal for metrics to giving. Measuring impact is more important to donors between the ages of 21 and 40 than it was to previous generations, according to a 2013 survey by <a href="http://www.gvsu.edu/jcp/frey-foundation-chair-for-family-foundations-and-philanthropy-119.htm">the Frey Chair for Family Philanthropy program at the Johnson Center for Philanthropy</a> in Grand Rapids, and consulting firm <a href="http://2164.net/">21/64</a>. The stakes are huge: The study notes that an estimated $41 trillion in bequests will be transferred into the hands of post-Baby Boom generations in the first half of the 21st century.
It's no wonder then that the increased discussion of philanthropy in business schools is bubbling up from the students. "You meet with them, and they have all kinds of ideas about things they would like to do and they would like the school to do," says Robertson. "I'd like to think our students are becoming more aware of the world and are resolved to making it a better place."
"I think we're in incredibly good hands," suggests Heisman. "I don't have one worry going forward. Young people are smart, they're engaged and they are passionate. I think they need to be employed and get experience putting their ideas to use."
Says Klein: "It has struck me that when I was growing up, we didn't have very many business leaders as heroes -- there wasn't a Gates or a Jobs people knew about. When I was in my 20s, those who wanted a professional degree and wanted to change the world and weren't sure how that would happen went to law school. Today, if you want to change the world but aren't sure how, you're more likely to consider business school."
