How many times have you stared at your (sometimes overflowing) wardrobe in horror and yelled “I have nothing to wear”? Speaking for myself when I say this: way too many times. Have I bailed on plans for this reason? Also yes. Slikk promises to deliver clothes in just 60 minutes in <keyword id="19895037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="keywords">Bengaluru</keyword>, where it already operates.<br /><br />Today’s <keyword id="20246469" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GenZ" source="keywords">GenZ</keyword> and young millennials are highly impulsive shoppers, making them a key target group for <keyword id="23077981" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fast-fashion-brands" source="keywords">fast fashion brands</keyword>, says founder <keyword id="23077987" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="akshay-gulati" source="keywords">Akshay Gulati</keyword>.<br /><br />Their impulsiveness is fueled by the constant influx of new trends and designs, alongside faster delivery options. Slikk aims to address this by offering fresh collections from emerging fast fashion brands every week, along with a <keyword id="23077983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="60-minute-delivery" source="keywords">60-minute delivery</keyword> window, providing a unique shopping experience compared to traditional fashion platforms, he adds. <em>He did not have to call us out like that.<br />    <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="112681980" title="Online vendors generated 15.8 million jobs in India: e-commerce report" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div></em>Anyways, I wasted no time in downloading the app and picking out some pieces of clothing. While the sizing charts weren’t as detailed as I would’ve liked and there weren’t too many options to choose from, it seemed to do the job — considering the <keyword id="19913824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup" source="keywords">startup</keyword> began operating only recently.<br /><br />But what really caught my attention was that not only did Slikk offer a 7-day return, it also had a “Try and Buy” option. Here, the user would have to pay Rs 50 in addition to the standard delivery fee and Slikk’s delivery executive would wait for 10 minutes at your doorstep so you could try on the products and return what wasn’t to your liking immediately. Pretty neat, no?<br /><br />However, my love affair with Slikk ended sourly almost as soon as it began. After I’d added some pieces of clothing, selected the “Try and Buy” option and applied the first-timer discount coupon, it wouldn’t let me make the payment.<br /><br />I tried selecting both — the Cash on Delivery and Online Payment modes — several times. But the page wouldn’t budge. I even tried using the website, in case there was a glitch with the app, but that didn’t work either.<br /><br />While I was a little disappointed, the experience gave me the impression that Slikk needs a little more time to optimise its user interface and maybe collaborate with more brands before I can start relying on it as a chronic last-minute shopper.<br /><br />Meanwhile, reports suggest that Slikk has already raised $300K in its pre-seed round led by <keyword id="23077985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Better-Capital" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Better Capital" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Better Capital">Better Capital</keyword>, with participation from <keyword id="23077986" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Untitled-Ventures" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Untitled Ventures" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Untitled Ventures">Untitled Ventures</keyword>. A Silicon Valley veteran is turning his eyes towards construction. Specifically, remodeling bathrooms. </p><p>Roger Dickey, the founder and chief executive of Made Renovation, has already founded three other startups, and invested in more than 60. His first, Dope Wars, was a criminally minded Facebook game that was sold to Zynga, where it became Mafia Wars. His second, Gigster, was a company that provided software and tech consulting to large corporations. His third, Untitled Labs, launched last year. It is a "search lab," and plans to incubate consumer-focused companies in a variety of verticals. </p><p>Dickey left Gigster in January of last year, a year and a half after the company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gigster-20-million-redpoint-ventures-marc-benioff-michael-jordan-2017-8">raised $20 million in new funding</a> from investors including Redpoint Ventures, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, actor-turned-investor Ashton Kutcher, and the basketball legend Michael Jordan.</p><p>Made Renovations, his newest venture, just announced that it has raised $9 million in seed funding in a round led by Base10 Partners, with funding from from Felicis Ventures and Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. The startup has also launched a retail showroom on San Francisco's Chestnut Street.  </p><p>Made Renovations launched a website in May of 2019, and a month later, was starting to remodel bathrooms. It's not a typical general contractor: Made Renovation's direct employees don't swing any hammers. Instead, the company markets, designs, and buys materials for contractors, and then hires contractors to do multiple jobs at once. </p><p>"We think of contractors as our true customers," Dickey told Business Insider. </p><p>Dickey's original inspiration for the business came from the scarcity of qualified contractors in San Francisco, especially those who would be willing to work on jobs as small as a bathroom. By offering contractors a queue of potential bathroom remodels, Made Renovations is able to give them constant and easily repeatable work. Contractors also save money on sales and marketing costs and effort. </p><p>This means that Made Renovations pays lower prices than a one-off remodel, some of which are then passed on to the consumer. The company claims to be 20-30% cheaper for consumers than a typical one-off remodel. </p><p>The company's design team prioritized ease of construction and elegant, but affordable design. By reusing as many materials as possible, storing the rest in their East Bay warehouse, the company can lower costly material waste. Dickey said that his designers would "geek out" when figuring out how to make beautiful bathroom designs more affordable. They would then make 3D renderings of potential designs and advertise them on social platforms. The designs that got the most engagement were the designs that the company decided to actually build. </p><p>Dickey said that the company will likely expand to another city this year where "supply and demand are out of whack and where price per square foot for construction is skyrocketing," like it's experience in San Francisco. He thinks that this market will only expand as building costs rise and there just aren't enough general contractors to satisfy demand.</p><p>As for moving past the bathroom? Dickey said that they might do so in a few years, but that the next most obvious target, the kitchen, is much more complicated, more variable, and has a slightly smaller market.  </p><p>"Bathrooms are a 2.4 million (renovations) a year and $20 billion market in the US. This Saturday, Washington and company will be in Queens</span></span>&#xa0;sandwiched between indietronica band Miami Horror and reggae artist Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley.</p><p>At a festival featuring Kanye West, Chance the Rapper, and The Weeknd - three of the hottest names in music right now - this may sound blasphemous: If there's one performance&#xa0;you hear&#xa0;the entire weekend, and I would venture to say&#xa0;this year,&#xa0;make it Washington's.</p><h2>Here's why.</h2>

He's doing another, like a stop-motion animated kind of comedy sort of like '<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432283/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_7">Fantastic Mr. Fox,</a>'" Murray said. "And it's a Japanese story and I'm playing a dog. I'm very excited."</p><p>Other Anderson regulars who will lend their voices include Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, and Bob Balaban. Bryan Cranston is also attached to the film.</p><p>Though "Fantastic Mr. Fox" didn't make any huge noise at the box office, making <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=fantasticmrfox.htm">over $46 million worldwide</a>, for a movie that was entirely in stop-motion it's still an impressive take. At least <a href="https://www.insider.com/every-disney-live-action-remake">a dozen more are reported to be in the works</a>.</p><p>Why does Disney keep remaking so many of its animated classics?</p><p>The majority of them are lucrative cash cows.</p><p>Similar to the studio's well-oiled Marvel Cinematic Universe, the live-action and CGI remakes provide Disney with a cushion to offset any potential box-office upsets in any given fiscal quarter. Four of them have crossed $1 billion at theaters, while another two crossed $700 million.</p><p><div type="image" title="how much disney live action remakes have made at the box office chart" height="3145" width="1667" msid="75748417" hostid="261"></div></p><p>We also have Johnny Depp and 2016's "The Jungle Book" to thank for the influx of remakes. But before we get to that, it's important to remember we could have had a resurgence of Disney remakes years ago.</p><h2>An influx of Disney remakes could have taken over theaters 20 years ago</h2><p>Before Disney's animated reimaginings became commonplace, the studio remade three <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> in the '90s: "The Jungle Book," "101 Dalmatians," and "102 Dalmatians."</p><p>They just weren't much to brag about.</p><p><div type="image" title="jungle book 102 dalmatians" height="600" width="1200" msid="75748419" hostid="261"></div></p><p>1994's "Jungle Book" grossed $43.2 million worldwide. Though "101 Dalmatians" brought in $320.7 million worldwide, its sequel, released four years later, didn't break $200 million at the box office. These weren't exactly sure-fire hits, and, <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1057637_jungle_book" target="_blank" rel="noopener">aside from "The Jungle Book,"</a> critical reviews of the films were negative. (The two "Dalmatians" sit at <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1074108_101_dalmatians" target="_blank" rel="noopener">42%</a> and <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/102_dalmatians" target="_blank" rel="noopener">31%</a> on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively.)</p><p>Disney didn't attempt another live-action adaptation of a classic until 2010 with Johnny Depp in "Alice in Wonderland."</p><h2>Why the Disney remake train finally took off: Big stars, good reviews, and box-office wins</h2><p>The difference this time around? Depp was already a part of Disney's very popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, which at that point had released a trilogy of films. Depp's presence as the Mad Hatter helped the film <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt1014759/?ref_=bo_se_r_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cross $1 billion worldwide</a>. Again, <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1221547_alice_in_wonderland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the reviews weren't great</a>, but the film achieved what the three previous remakes hadn't by being a runaway success.</p><p><div type="image" title="alice in wonderland" height="869" width="1521" msid="75748420" hostid="261"></div></p><p>It was the most money a Disney live-action adaptation had made at that point. The success of the next remakes was critical to making sure "Alice's" box-office intake wasn't a fluke because of Depp's stardom at the time and to prove there was an audience who wanted these films.</p><p>Disney's next three releases were "Maleficent" (2014), "Cinderella" (2015), and "The Jungle Book" (2016). While the latter two, more or less, delivered pretty straight-forward adaptations of the originals, "Maleficent" offered something different by telling 1959's "Sleeping Beauty" from the perspective of the villainess.</p><p>That original spin on the fairy-tale, along with a convincing performance from Angelina Jolie, helped "Maleficent" <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt1587310/?ref_=bo_se_r_1">take in $758 million</a>. "Cinderella" made a bit less with <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt1661199/?ref_=bo_se_r_1">$542 million worldwide</a>, but it was the <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/cinderella_2013">best-reviewed live-action adaptation at that point by both critics and audiences</a>. Then came "The Jungle Book."</p><p><div type="image" title="maleficent cinderella jungle book" height="600" width="1200" msid="75748422" hostid="261"></div></p><p>After the '94 release didn't perform as well, the new adaptation demolished box-office expectations. <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-jungle-book-climbs-883622">Great reviews</a> and word of mouth helped the film <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/18/arts/jungle-book-tops-box-office.html">overperform by roughly 40% opening weekend</a>. Some even c<a href="https://whatculture.com/film/8-reasons-the-jungle-book-remake-is-better-than-the-animation">called it</a><a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_jungle_book_2016"> better than the original</a> 1967 movie. By the end of its theatrical run, "The Jungle Book" <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt3040964/?ref_=bo_se_r_3">took in over $966 million</a>.</p><p>The film's success was important to Disney for a few reasons.</p><p>It cemented the studio could continue rolling out more re-imaginings of its classics and aim to re-do some of its more popular titles. Up until this point, Disney was arguably remaking B-level classics at best.</p><p>Yes, "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," and "The Jungle Book" were all recognizable intellectual property, but they weren't the studio's A-list material <a href="https://www.imdb.com/list/ls003384750/">from the Disney Renaissance</a>. Those are the string of movies released between 1989 and 1999 that are considered some of Disney's top-tier titles. It includes the likes of "The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin," "Mulan," and "The Little Mermaid." All five of these movies have either been released since 2017 or are set for a theatrical release.</p><p><div type="image" title="disney live action remakes" height="600" width="1200" msid="75748423" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The "Jungle Book's" success was especially important because it suggested Disney could move forward with a "Lion King" remake. The 2016 film used an <a href="https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2483113/what-disney-learned-from-jungle-book-that-really-helped-on-the-lion-king" target="_blank" rel="noopener">early version of the technology that would be used to create Favreau's 2019 "Lion King" film</a>.</p><p>If "The Jungle Book" didn't perform well, we probably wouldn't have a new "Lion King," or at least not in the way it was delivered to us. Favreau was named as director of "The Lion King" <a href="https://thewaltdisneycompany.com/disney-jon-favreau-the-lion-king/">remake in September 2016</a>.</p><h2><strong>Why these remakes are important to the company: They're sure-fire wins that allow the company to take risks on new potential franchises.</strong></h2><p>Remaking Disney classics is an easy way for the company to print money at the box office. They're <a href="https://screencraft.org/2013/11/22/four-quadrant-film-10-essential-elements/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">four-quadrant films</a>, meaning they're films that appeal to men and women below and above 25. Disney was able to deliver something nostalgic for fans of the originals while offering something new for young children, many of whom may be children of fans who grew up with the originals.</p><p><div type="image" title="nala simba lion king 2019 1994 " height="1272" width="1190" msid="75748425" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Before its streaming service, Disney Plus, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disney-plus-has-10-million-sign-ups-since-launch-subscribers-2019-11">launched in November 2019</a>, Disney limited how often some of the original animated films were in circulation. Unless you have some of the classics on VHS or on DVD/Blu-ray — if it was even released in that format — then you may not have had access to it.</p><p>The outpouring of successful Disney remakes and Marvel movies have also allowed the studio to try out more original — and perhaps, risky — properties. </p><p>If Disney wants to make "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-wrinkle-in-time-review-strong-message-for-kids-but-doesnt-deliver-2018-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A Wrinkle in Time</a>" and it <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/a-wrinkle-time-why-it-has-underperformed-at-box-office-1094032" target="_blank" rel="noopener">doesn't perform as well as hoped</a>, you can bet that it will be flanked by the likes of at least one big Disney win so any loss is less visible. In this case, "Black Panther" debuted right before it (<a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt1825683/?ref_=bo_se_r_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$1.3 billion worldwide</a>) and "Avengers: Infinity War" (<a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt4154756/?ref_=bo_se_r_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$2 billion worldwide</a>) came out a month after it. "A Wrinkle in Time" grossed <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl3229582849/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$132.7 million worldwide</a>. It was the studio's <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/lone-loser-disneys-big-quarter-wrinkle-time-220638977.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">only miss in its Q2 2018 earnings report</a>.</p><p>Another example is 2015's "<a href="http://insider.com/category/tomorrowland">Tomorrowland</a>," starring George Clooney, which was wedged between "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (<a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt2395427/?ref_=bo_se_r_1">$1.4 billion worldwide</a>) and Pixar's "Inside Out" (<a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt2096673/?ref_=bo_se_r_1">$857.6 million worldwide</a>). The Clooney vehicle, directed by Brad Bird ("The Incredibles"), was supposed to kick off a franchise, but wound up making <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt1964418/?ref_=bo_se_r_1">$209 million worldwide</a>. The film's budget was estimated at $190 million.</p><p><div type="image" title="tomorrowland5jpg" height="2160" width="4096" msid="75748426" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Bird addressed Hollywood's penchant for leaning towards sequels and safe franchises directly after "Tomorrowland" flopped.</p><p>"Every studio should, like an allowance, allow themselves a certain number of franchise things, and then as an investment in the future, try these risky things that are unproven. Why Disney keeps remaking so many of its animated movies

However, when it comes to counting its commercial successes in the recent past, only Bollywood duds like Humshakals, Khamoshiyan, Mr. X and Bombay Velvet come to mind.<br />

But now, their dry spell is about to end, as in a path-breaking development, <a>Star India has initiated a three-year deal with Karan Johar. As per the deal, Johar’s Dharma Productions and Fox Star Studios will co-produce and distribute not one or two, but 9 films. </a><br />

Commenting on this strategic partnership, Uday Shankar, CEO, Star India said,“The Indian film industry is an important market for us and this strategic partnership offers us an excellent opportunity to fundamentally change the content quality paradigm. This venture is the natural step in our progression to create entertaining and eclectic content for a global audience and to grow the business through game-changing innovation in content, marketing and distribution."<br />

He said,“Movies for me have always been a blend of artistic and commercial resources. <keyword id="62161" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dharma-Productions">Dharma Productions</keyword> has always endeavoured to attain the highest form of celluloid excellence and entertain simultaneously. I am glad we have found a partner in Star India and Fox Star Studios for a visionary 9 films alliance.”<br />

So, what new would Karan Johar and Fox Star Studios offer to Indian audiences? It would bring movies from some of Bollywood’s most promising directors that would have Bollywood superstars.<br />

<strong>Shuddhi:</strong> Karan Johar recently announced the star cast of the movie, which had been announced long time back. With Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the leading roles, this movie is to be directed by <em>Agneepath</em>-fame Karan Malhotra.<br />

<strong>Shaandaar:</strong> Shahid Kapoor would be seen opposite Alia Bhatt, in what is being called India’s first destination wedding film. The movie would be directed by Vikas Bahl<em> of Queen</em> fame.<br />

<strong>An Untitled Superhero Film: </strong>Starring heartthrobs Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, this movie is to be directed by Ayan Mukherji, who shares an amazing bond with the actor, having been directed in <em>Wake Up Sid</em> and <em>Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani</em>.<br />

<strong>Kalank: </strong>To be directed by <em>2 States</em> director Abhishek Varman, this movie would be based on Indian partition, and was a dream project of late producer Yash Johar, who himself had been through the ordeals of the partition.<br />

<strong>Ae Dil Hai Mushkil: </strong>Starring Aishwarya Rai, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in Karan Johar’s next directorial venture, this movie is awaited for a lot of reasons, one of them being Aishwarya’s first project with Karan Johar.<br />

5 Movies that will change Fox Star’s fortune in India; thanks to Karan Johar

<p class="p1"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Disney / Pixar</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The first reaction test audiences had to "Monsters, Inc." wasn't the bottomless sense of wonder drummed up by most Pixar movies: </span><span class="s1">It was boredom. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><span>"I thought, </span><em>Oh, a film about monsters who scare kids for a living. <em>That</em><em> hook should be enough to make people</em><span> <em>engaged," </em></span></em>director </span><span class="s1">Pete Docter told Tech Insider<em>.</em> "</span><span class="s1"><span><span>After about fifteen minutes, people began checking their watches and asking what is this movie about."</span></span></span></p><p class="p1">And so it was back to the drawing board. Docter, a Pixar veteran since 1989, had long been wrapped up in his work at the upstart California animation studio. His life took a sharp turn around this time, however, when he had his first child. As he found himself focusing on something other than work, he recognized a vital parallel in his movie.</p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">"I knew I still wanted to do work and that was very important, but I wanted to be with my son, so that really became the heart of what that film is about," Docter said.</span></p><p class="p1">"Monster's, Inc." (2001) became the story of Sully, the king of scares in a corporation of monsters, discovering his softer side as he's forced to protect a girl named Boo.</p><p class="p1">The director points to this as the change that saved the movie - and the final product was good enough to collect high box office sales and an impressive 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.</p><p class="p1">That deep emotional core, often based on real life, is present in Pixar movies ranging from "Toy Story" (1995) to "Inside Out" (2015). It is what makes the movies so engaging for all ages  <span>- </span>and what allows them to tackle such complex and adult concepts as loss, sadness, and compassion.</p><h2 class="p1">The deeper meaning</h2><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Pixar understands that the most important stories resonate with people because they appeal to some core truth about being alive - regardless of whether those stories are seen through the eyes of monsters, clownfish, robots, or cars.<br /></span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Disney / Pixar</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The company's first feature, "Toy Story," taught kids the virtues of cooperation over pridefulness. Only after Woody teams up with Buzz Lightyear does he realize that being the favorite toy isn't as important as the solidarity offered by friendship. </span><span class="s2"><a href="https://www.quora.com/Toy-Story-1995-movie">Early screenings</a></span><span class="s1"> of the film, packed with zip-lipped children, proved the studio was on to something.</span></p><p class="p1">In the early 2000s, Pixar writer and director Andrew Stanton says he was inspired to craft a story <a href="http://news.moviefone.com/2013/05/30/finding-nemo-trivia-25-things-you-didnt-know/">after feeling like he was being overprotective</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> of his son. </span><span>From that parental concern came the 2003 mega-hit "Finding Nemo," in which a worrywart clownfish showed parents the dark side of helicoptering.</span></p><p class="p1"><span>Fearless kids saw in that panic-stricken journey how their actions can affect adults. Independence is liberating, we learn, but you need to have some compassion while you find it.</span></p><p class="p1">In 2007, Pixar released "Ratatouille." Remy, the rat who inhabits the hat of a young culinary hopeful, fulfills his dream of becoming an accomplished French chef. It's an unlikely achievement - going from food scraps to fine dining - but one that, as the movie's villainous food critic Anton Ego reminds us, shouldn't be all that surprising. <span>"Not everyone can become a great artist," a softening Ego says at the end of the film, "but a great artist can come from anywhere."</span></p><p class="p1"><span><span>Two years later, Pixar gave audiences "UP," in which a curmudgeon named Carl, never having realized the dream he and his ex-wife had of living in Paradise Falls, finally gets the chance with Russell, a young Wilderness Explorer. </span><span>Perhaps Pixar's most fantastical film, "UP" reminds audiences that holding resentment stops us from growing as people. A friend may not be the same as a spouse, but living a life of solitude surrounded by enemies is hardly any better.</span></span></p><p class="p1"><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Pixar</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Pixar's latest venture, "Inside Out," was also directed by Docter. In it he </span></span>mirrored two personal experiences - his childhood move from Minnesota to Denmark, and his daughter's slide from goofball kid to angsty pre-teen. Bringing those stories together literally inside the mind of an 11-year-old, personifying her emotions, only gave Docter more room to explore those themes.</p><p class="p1">Indeed, Riley seems like a normal 11-year-old who's sad that her family is moving. Not until everything goes wrong, and her constant need to be happy comes into focus, do we realize what the film is arguing: In order to keep our brains healthy, we need to respect our emotions, even the bad ones.</p><p class="p1">"I've had a lot of people say, 'My son had a lot of problems talking about how he feels, but watching your film kind of unlocked something,'" Docter says. "Which is pretty cool." </p><p class="p1">It is through this focus on complex characters solving real problems that Pixar elicits such a strong emotional response.</p><p class="p1">"The main character is like a surrogate for you, the audience member," Docter says. "They're learning and discovering information at the same time you are, so that by the time the film ends, you feel like you've gone on the same emotional journey the character has."</p><h2 class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Leaving an impact</span></h2><p class="p1">Like all of the best stories, Pixar movies can help shape people in positive and lasting ways.</p><p class="p1">"I think that's one of the nice things about Pixar movies," child psychologist Omar Gudino says. "They really deal with something that might be considered darker in tone or more adult in subject matter in a way that's really accessible."</p><p class="p1"><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25695201">Research is finding</a> that when children between 3 and 5 years old watch movies, they come away with impressions about the natural state of the world. Even if those young viewers can't understand or describe everything happening in the movies, they still perceive complex emotions.</p><p class="p1">The way that those emotions are portrayed can have dramatic effects on development<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">A </span><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17178927">2007 study</a>, for example,<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> found that preschoolers from the US and Taiwan tended to see happiness differently depending on how it was portrayed in storybooks. To American kids, happiness looked like excitement. To the Taiwanese kids, it more resembled calm.</span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">As children mature into adolescence, they gain the ability to put themselves inside characters' heads, and they begin judging the character's actions and values against their own.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">  </span></span>Whether we carry these lessons into adulthood typically comes down to how much films get us talking, Gudino says.</p><p class="embed-spacer"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Colin Stokes, a father of two, adheres to the philosophy that movies supplement the other aspects of traditional child-rearing.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">  </span>"Like so many things in parenting," says Stokes, who gave a <a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/colin_stokes_how_movies_teach_manhood?language=en">TEDx lecture in 2013</a> lamenting the predictability of most kids' movies, "you're creating a consistent set of values that you demonstrate by your actions more than you are doing something to have an effect."</p><p class="embed-spacer"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Pixaar</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p class="p1">Even after two decades, Pixar is only beginning to acknowledge the impact it leaves on audiences.</p><p class="p1">Historically, Pixar's greatest critics have taken issue with the studio's lack of female and culturally diverse characters, a decision that has struck some as odd given how progressive the studios have been in other storytelling domains. </p><p class="p1">Jim Morris, president of Pixar Animation Studios, doesn't deny the problem. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Certainly we want the movies to be appealing to a wide audience. That's why we make 'em," he says. But he also concedes Pixar hasn't taken "as good advantage of opportunities we did have to create a level of diversity in the films."</span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Today, the company is taking measures to improve diversity. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">One strategy the studio has started using to gauge gender equity in its films is line-by-line analyses of dialogue "to see how male and female characters are represented in the films," Morris says.</span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Inside Out" could be a good omen: In addition to Riley being female, both main characters inside her head, Joy and Sadness, are voiced by female actors. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Morris also points to an upcoming project centering on the Mexican holiday, <em>Día de los Muertos. </em>Still untitled, little information has been released on the film, but if it reaches theaters, it would be Pixar's first feature to celebrate a minority culture.  </span></p><p class="p1">Then there are the stories that are simply fun to tell.</p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Later this year, Pixar will release "The Good Dinosaur," a film <a href="http://www.pixar.com/about/Upcoming">that asks</a> "What if the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs missed Earth entirely?" From there it follows a fearful apatosaurus named Arlo on a journey with a human friend in which Arlo must confront his fears. That may sound like a wild plot, but audiences should feel confident come November that the story they'll watch will, in some way, ring true.</span></p><p class="p1">"When you get right down to the core of it, they're not grandiose ideas," Morris says.
