These two elements undoubtedly have the power to make or break the game. In the recently released <keyword id="20254730" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="until-dawn" source="keywords">Until Dawn</keyword> remake, the developers manage to create an atmosphere that leaves you on the edge of your seat. <br /><br />The snow-capped forests, eerie background score, and gorgeous yet bone-chilling landscapes are all brought to life in the remake that was released for the PlayStation 5 recently.<br /><br />I started playing the game on a Friday night and by Sunday, I had wrapped up the adventure. Until Dawn is a short and (not so) sweet ride, that can easily be played over a fun gaming weekend. The game, as mentioned already, is a remake of the original game that came out back in 2015.<br /><br /><h2>Compared to the previous Until Dawn…</h2><br />So, when you look at the game through the lens of somebody who has played the original, you will find that this is a massive visual upgrade. The game looks stunning and captures more details when compared to the original. However, it also has some hiccups.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="3" msid="115010801" hostid="261" sizebytes="1242232"></div><br />The controls, for instance, still feel a bit wonky and there is no option for the characters to sprint. There will be times when you will want to pass by an area quickly but that just won’t be possible.<br /><br />The story, is also exactly what we experienced years back and there are no changes there.<br /><br />The gameplay too, remains the same. However, there is one difference - there is a redesigned process for finding totems. In Until Dawn, you could quickly flip a totem and see a vision of a character’s fate. Now, the interaction is more complex—you must move the totem in multiple directions before a light reveals the vision. This new method turns a once-simple task into a somewhat frustrating one, slowing down gameplay and adding needless complexity.<br /><br /><h2>If you haven’t played the previous Until Dawn…<br /></h2><br />However, if you haven’t played the 2015 masterpiece, <strong>there’s a lot for you in store.</strong><br /><br />The game follows the story of a group of friends who reunite a year after a tragedy. Each one of them has their own characteristics, which keep changing based on the choices you make. The game has a butterfly effect - meaning every action will influence the ending. There are different endings that you can get hence if you feel you want to do things differently, you can easily try the game again. <br /><br />The story is quite intriguing and moves at a fast pace at the beginning, gets slightly slow in the middle but eventually gains momentum. If you watch a lot of horror/thriller films, there might be a few elements that you can guess, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be losing out on anything.<br /><br />The setting, as mentioned already, is quite eerie as well as fun if you enjoy a good scare. There are a couple of jump-scares as well and they are quite good. Despite the scare factor, the game features some gorgeous locations that are a visual treat. <br /><br />The game features some amazing sound effects that will at times make you think that a jump scare is in store even if nothing happens.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="4" msid="115010809" hostid="261" sizebytes="682660"></div><br /><h2>Verdict<br /></h2><br />The Until Dawn remake offers an immersive horror experience with stunning visuals and a haunting atmosphere that will keep you on edge. The improved graphics breathe new life into the eerie landscapes, and the sound design adds an extra layer of suspense. <br /><br />However, some aspects, like the clunky controls and the new, more tedious totem mechanic, might at times detract from the experience. While returning players may not find much novelty in the story or gameplay, newcomers will appreciate the chilling plot and multiple endings that offer replayability. Overall, it is a solid choice for a weekend horror binge.<br />

Until Dawn PS5 review: Same same but different

<p>Even if you don't recognize Scoot McNairy's name, you almost certainly recognize his face.</p><p>The 46-year-old actor has shared the screen with Hollywood greats like Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck and has been directed by auteurs like Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher. He's popped up in Oscar winners ("Argo," "12 Years a Slave"), superhero movies ("Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice"), and your favorite prestige TV series ("True Detective," "Narcos: Mexico," "Halt and Catch Fire"). </p><p>McNairy is "that guy" — and that's the way he likes it.</p><p>"I feel like the further down you are on the call sheet, the more of a character you can play," he tells Business Insider.</p><p>It might feel like McNairy is everywhere these days — he currently stars opposite James McAvoy in Universal's horror remake <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/speak-no-evil-remake-vs-original-scoot-mcnairy-2024-9">"Speak No Evil,"</a> and will be seen next in "Nightbitch" with Amy Adams, out this December — but there was a time when he worried he'd never work again. </p><p>It was a big enough fear twelve years ago that McNairy left Hollywood entirely and headed back to his native Texas to wait out a professional dry spell.</p><p>"Essentially, I quit," McNairy explains. At the time, he had two breakthrough roles in the can — "Killing Them Softly," opposite Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, and James Gandolfini, and "Argo" — but neither had been released yet, meaning more offers weren't yet rolling in as a result. In the long wait to get noticed, he was running out of money.</p><p>"I didn't want to go back to doing commercials at that time. I'd been doing it for a decade," he says. "I wanted something new."</p><p>That meant decamping to Texas, where he planned to get licensed and become a contractor while figuring out his next move.</p><p>Eventually, "Argo" was released and went on to win an Oscar, and McNairy did, of course, work again. His next role after that dry period, in the Guy Pearce and Robert Patison dystopian Western "The Rover," was the first part he'd ever been offered without auditioning first. He found out about the "Argo" Oscar win while filming "The Rover" in the Australian Outback.</p><div type="image" title="Alix West Lefler, Scoot McNairy, and Mackenzie Davis in &quot;Speak No Evil&quot; (2024)" height="5504" width="8256" msid="113915192" hostid="261" sizebytes="5779588"></div><p>More than a decade later and with an even longer list of credits to his name, that period of professional uncertainty still informs McNairy's worldview. "I feel like I'm <em>still</em> trying to break through," he says.</p><p>"It's this weird feeling that all actors get, and I think a lot of artists get," he continues. "You truly do feel like you're never going to work again because you've seen it happen where people just kind of stop working."</p><p>While moderately terrifying, that attitude can also be freeing, and McNairy has used it to take big swings and fully immerse himself in his work. Because when every role might be your last, you might as well push yourself outside your comfort zone.</p><p>For the latest interview in BI's<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/role-play-series"> "Role Play" series</a>, McNairy discusses working with Quentin Tarantino, how his partner Sosie Bacon helped him completely rework his performance as Amy Adams' husband in "Nightbitch," and why he didn't really mind that no one was watching "Halt and Catch Fire."</p><h2 id="12f8d0b9-3c82-4e31-b9d2-53db14a3887b">On having an 'eye-opening experience' with fame and why he won't read reviews</h2><div type="image" title="Scoot McNairy in &quot;Killiing Them Softly&quot;" height="800" width="1067" msid="113915179" hostid="261" sizebytes="18052"></div><p><strong>You had been working consistently for awhile before your breakthrough performances in "Killing Them Softly" and "Argo," both of which came out in 2012, and you did a ton of press for both. What did it feel like to suddenly get that recognition?</strong></p><p>It's funny you mentioned that. I stopped reading reviews after "Midnight Kiss." I had a review that was probably positive, but there was something in it that took me aback.</p><p>Since then I vowed, from 2008 on, to just focus on the work and never read your reviews. It's sort of irrelevant what other people think about you. Just keep your head down and focus on the work and don't change what you're doing based on other people's opinions. And so I sort of stuck with that.</p><p>I don't know what was really said about me on that project during that time.</p><p><strong>You still don't read reviews even now, just as a rule?</strong></p><p>No. My partner, the amazing and lovely and talented Sosie [Bacon], she just told me [about "Speak No Evil"], "The reviews are really good, and you would be very happy." But she doesn't read them to me. She looks through all of them, but she doesn't read them to me.</p><p>And of course no one's going to tell you, "You were awful in the movie, and everyone's saying it." They just don't say anything, so you don't hear that.</p><p><strong>Did becoming more recognizable after 2012 — becoming "that guy," in a way — change your lifestyle at all? Did it change your state of mind?</strong></p><p>No, and I thought it would. I really did. I think that that was a big eye-opening experience for me. It felt like, "Oh, if I could just have these things or accomplish these things, I would feel different or feel better." And I think right around that time, probably in the release of "Argo" and "Killing Them Softly" and all those things, I didn't. I felt the same.</p><h2 id="8fc26057-7d29-4520-b818-5a4b8f5c490c">On Quentin Tarantino's obscure film taste and how his partner helped him retool his 'Nightbitch' performance</h2><div type="image" title="Scoot McNairy making a scared expression in &quot;Nightbitch.&quot;" height="1134" width="1512" msid="113915177" hostid="261" sizebytes="29582"></div><p><strong>You have a small part in "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood." You've </strong><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://collider.com/once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-interview-scoot-mcnairy/"><strong>mentioned</strong></a><strong> in the past that Quentin Tarantino has a really unique on-set style. What exactly was particular about working with him?</strong></p><p>He's just super entertaining. Everyone in the film business loves movies. It's why we all work in this industry.</p><p>But to see someone who loves films more than anybody on the whole set, knows more about films and storytelling and the business and the history than anyone else on set, it's like a crash course or a masterclass of every subject you could take on film.</p><p>I was really quiet on that set. I was just watching him and listening to him and sort of a little bit mesmerized by the encyclopedia that he could just turn up at any moment. He was dropping people's names that had two lines and a guest star role in a TV show from the '70s. It was just incredible how knowledgeable he is, but also how talented he is, and such a great filmmaker.</p><p>I was over the moon to get that job. I mean, I'd have held Quentin Tarantino's coffee if he'd have just let me be around set and listened to him talk. </p><p>I remember the auditioning process. I sent in a tape, and all the feedback I got was, "Wow, he really, really likes it, but he's got somebody else in mind for the role." All good. I never thought I was going to get the part to begin with. And then it wasn't until two weeks before I shot that they called and said, "Hey, they're booking you." And I was, "What? What? No way." And then I didn't really meet Quentin until the day I got to work.</p><p><strong>Would you want to reunite with Quentin?</strong></p><p>If Quentin would have me on anything that he's doing, he'd say, "Jump," and I'd say, "How high?"</p><p><strong>I saw "Nightbitch" at TIFF and I was surprised by your character. He was much more nuanced than I expected given the trailer, which felt a little bit more humorous than the movie actually was. Have you seen the </strong><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=918prRymA-U"><strong>trailer</strong></a><strong>?</strong></p><p>I have seen the trailer, yeah. But it's hard for me, because I'd seen the film before I saw the trailer, so it was hard for me to separate. I was like, "Oh, well, those are clips from the movie." But I did hear that from a couple people that the trailer could be misleading.</p><p><strong>Was it a delicate balancing act for you to both develop your character and make him feel like a real relatable guy while also holding the space for Amy to own this movie?</strong></p><p>I've seen almost every single one of Amy's movies. I've been watching her since the day I moved to California. She's a phenomenal, ferocious — feral, I should say — actor. It was intimidating at first to work with her, but she's so approachable and so kind and such a giving actor that all that went away after the first couple days.</p><div type="image" title="Sosie Bacon and Scoot McNairy" height="683" width="911" msid="113915183" hostid="261" sizebytes="48846"></div><p>But in regards to my part in that film, I have to give a lot of credit to obviously Mari [Heller], the filmmaker, who I had extensive conversations with about parenthood and relationships and children, as well as with Amy. I got so much insight from them as mothers on their experiences.</p><p>But I have to give a lot of credit to my lovely, amazing partner Sosie, who really broke down why all this is so infuriating for a mom or a woman. She helped me with being kind with the character, being aloof with the character, being genuine with the character, but also teeing up Amy for these certain scenes or certain lines where you can say something that just makes a mom go, "Oh, how <em>could</em> you?"</p><p>And those things, as a man, you can't see the humor in it as much. I had a different approach to this character, and Sosie sat me down and was like, "No, no, no, no. I'm telling you, you need to pay attention to <em>these</em> things." I think that led to the performance being the way that it was.</p><h2 id="70a751bf-3b68-4f5e-a4b5-4a88209055f7">On why he wasn't bothered that no one watched 'Halt and Catch Fire' and why he loves character acting</h2><div type="image" title="Scoot McNairy in &quot;Halt and Catch Fire&quot;" height="2832" width="3776" msid="113915187" hostid="261" sizebytes="426672"></div><p><strong>"Halt and Catch Fire" is one of the most underrated shows of all time. Did it ever frustrate you that it didn't get more recognition when it was airing?</strong></p><p>No, no. Look, I loved [creators] Chris Rogers and Chris Cantwell. They were two or three years younger than me. They're incredibly smart. I loved these guys. I loved working with them. I loved the show so much.</p><p>People were like, "No one's watching." Our ratings were down so low that we were like the lowest-rated show to ever get picked up for another season. And I knew the ratings were bad, but there was a sense on set too that's like, "Well, let's try this, or let's do that. No one's watching. We can have some more freedom with it."</p><p>But no. That part of it's out of my control — the box office, the general public. It's so out of my control. I hope that it turns out great, but I don't give it a lot of thought or a lot of time.</p><p><strong>You've spoken in the past about being unsure which path you wanted to take with your career: character actor or leading man. Was there ever a time that you felt particularly at that crossroads? Kind of like, "If I had taken that role or done that audition or turned down this thing, my career would've been completely different"?</strong></p><p>That's a great question, and I don't know. We'll never know. I know that what's best for me, or what I was going after, is I love being number two or three on the call sheet. I love it.</p><p>That being said, leading man roles, I've done some, I love them, all based on what that story is or what that lead character is doing. </p><p>But I like playing number three or four just because you have a little bit more room to stretch a character, make them a little bit more outlandish, push the envelope a little bit more. Like in "12 Years a Slave," I really threw that character at the wall, and I couldn't believe that it stuck. I couldn't believe that they liked it and they wanted it.</p><p>A lot of these auditions I went into earlier, I never thought I would get them. I had a long period of time of the studio saying no to me. When a filmmaker wanted me, the studio would be like, "No, bring this to somebody else." That went on for a really long time.</p><p>So around this time period, I started throwing stuff at the wall. That role in "Killing Them Softly," I was just messing around and playing. And then they wanted a callback, and I was like, "I have no idea what I did! I never thought I was going to come back for this."</p><p>Those types of characters and character acting are definitely something I'd much more lean into, and I'm hoping in the future to get deeper character roles that allow me to really challenge myself and stretch myself to more uncomfortable places. Because it's really comfortable knowing you can lay something down in an audition with the thought of, "I'm never going to get it anyways. No one's ever going to see this. Who cares?"</p><p>But to do it on something that you know that people <em>are</em> going to see can take you outside of your comfort zone. And I like to be outside of my comfort zone. The following year would bring "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/captain-america-civil-war-movie-commentary-facts-2016-9">Captain America: Civil War,</a>" "Deadpool" and "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice." The superhero movie was in high gear, and showing no signs of slowing down.</p><p>But Spielberg's point was that nothing is forever in the movie business. These cycles, Spielberg said, "have a finite time in popular culture." And the maker of "E.T.," "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/jurassic-park-cast-then-and-now-2018-6">Jurassic Park</a>" and "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/steven-spielberg-jaws-shocked-hit-shark-looked-dumb-2023-2">Jaws</a>" might know a thing or two about the ebbs and flows of pop-culture taste.</p><p>As 2023 draws to a close, no one is sounding the death knell of the superhero movie. The Walt Disney Co.'s <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3-details-to-know-2023-4">"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"</a> made $845.6 million worldwide and Sony's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-trailer-tom-holland-reference-2023-4">"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse"</a> ($691 million) was one of the most acclaimed films of the year. Marvel is still mightier than any other brand in the business.</p><p>But more than ever before, there are chinks in the armor of the superhero movie. Its dominance in popular culture is no longer quite so assured. A cycle may be turning, and a new one dawning.</p><p>For the first time in more than two decades, the top three movies at the box office didn't include one sequel or remake: "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/all-upcoming-movies-mattel-toys-barbie-2023-7">Barbie</a>," "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-mario-bros-first-video-game-movie-highst-gross-billion-2023-5">The Super Mario Bros. Movie</a>" and "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oppenheimer-fact-vs-fiction-what-the-movie-got-right-wrong-2023-7">Oppenheimer</a>." The last time that happened was 2001, when "Harry Potter and the<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/details-missed-harry-potter-and-the-sorcerers-stone-2020-9"> Sorcerer's Stone</a>," "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/fun-facts-shrek-movie-2019-2">Shrek</a>" and "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/monsters-inc-cool-and-unique-details-you-never-saw">Monsters, Inc.</a>" topped the box office.</p><p>No, it's not exactly a lineup of originality like, say, 1973, when "The Exorcist, "The Sting" and "American Graffiti" led all movies in ticket sales. "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/barbie-movie-2023-fun-facts-details-2023-7">Barbie</a>" and "The Super Mario Bros.," based on some of the most familiar brands in the world, will generate spinoffs and sequels of their own.</p><p>But it's hard not to sense a shift in moviegoing, one that might have reverberations for years to come for Hollywood.</p><p>"There's an inflection point in 2023," says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore. " <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/barbenheimer-barbie-oppenheimer-double-feature-3f2cebb6720fb79b8584976f9e97eca0">Barbenheimer</a> is just one part of that story. Audiences, they want to be challenged. I think the tried and true is not necessarily working."</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barbie-movie-could-recoup-huge-marketing-spend-opening-weekend-2023-7">Greta Gerwig's "Barbie,"</a> from Warner Bros., was the year's runaway hit, with more than $1.4 billion in ticket sales worldwide. It was a blockbuster like none seen before: an anarchic comedy that set a string of records for a movie directed by a woman.</p><p>Nearly as unprecedented was the success of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barbie-oppenheimer-same-release-date-reason-christopher-nolan-superstitious-2023-12">Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer,"</a> a three-hour drama that nearly grossed $1 billion. As different as it and "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barbie-movie-set-win-barbenheimer-box-office-battle-with-oppenheimer-2023-7">Barbie</a>" were, they were each <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/barbie-oppenheimer-barbenheimer-box-office-d07dce60b4726b2c168c228e1a405c70">original feats of cinema</a> and personal statements by its directors.</p><p>At the same time, the Walt Disney Co.'s Marvel, a hit-making machine like none other in movie history, faltered like never before. "The Marvels" <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/marvels-box-office-disney-brie-larson-392f34978d96a5a2bca5e32717d888e8">marked a new low for the Marvel Cinematic Universe</a>, collecting $200 million globally. DC Studios, in the midst of a revamp, saw disappointing results for "The Flash" and "Blue Beetle" before watching <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/box-office-aquaman-b11c243a659b1b7ad826d5a8298c5855#:~:text=Including%20international%20estimates%20at%20%2480,of%20its%20box%20office%20internationally.">"Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" sink to a $28.1 million debut.</a></p><div type="image" title="A photo of Jason Mamoa as Aquaman" height="2160" width="3840" msid="106459658" hostid="261" sizebytes="254178"></div><p>Both Marvel and DC have already made moves to right their ships. Bob Iger, Disney's chief executive, has called turning around Marvel his top priority. He said the superhero studio has suffered greatly from too many films and series leading to "diluted quality." The James Gunn, Peter Safran-led DC, meanwhile, won't officially launch until 2025 with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/james-gunn-superman-legacy-cast-2023-7">"Superman Legacy."</a></p><p>In the meantime, something else will have to fill the void. That was a theme in 2023, too, when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/hollywood-strike-sag-aftra-wga-writers-actors-1960-2023-7">the writers and actors strikes</a> marred release plans and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/fall-2023-movies-tv-affected-sag-wga-strikes">forced the delay of several films</a> including Warner's "Dune: Part Two," Sony's next "Ghostbusters" movie and MGM's "Challengers."</p><p>Those disruptions will continue in 2024. Analysts aren't expecting a banner year for Hollywood in part because films like the next "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/how-tom-cruise-mission-impossible-dead-reckoning-stunts-2023-8">Mission: Impossible</a>" film and the "Spider-Verse" sequel, both delayed by the strikes, won't make their original dates.</p><p>Overall ticket sales in U.S. and Canadian theaters for 2023 are expected to reach about $9 billion, according to Comscore, an improvement of about 20% from 2022. The industry is still trying to regain its pre-pandemic footing, when ticket sales regularly surpassed $11 billion. Output of wide-releases in 2023 (88) still trailed those in 2019 (108) by 18.5%.</p><p>Hollywood is still coaxing moviegoers back to theaters — something "Barbie," "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/oppenheimer-ending-explained-by-director-christopher-nolan-2023-7">Oppenheimer</a>" and "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-mario-bros-movie-smashes-records-top-animated-film-opening-2023-4">Mario</a>" went a long way to helping.</p><div type="image" title="A photo of Gabrielle Roitman, Kayla Seffing, Maddy Hiller and Casey Myer posing in front of an Oppenheimer poster." height="3624" width="5135" msid="106459659" hostid="261" sizebytes="1308546"></div><p>"It reinforced something that we've known for 100 years in the business: People like going to the shared experience out of the home," says Jeffrey Goldstein, distribution chief for Warner Bros. "They love being entertained. Movies are a good financial proposition and can bring in a mass audience."</p><p>"It probably started with '<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/super-mario-bros-movie-cast-dressed-like-characters-red-carpet-2023-4">Mario</a>' last April," adds Goldstein. "I think that showed audiences again that theaters are a fun place to be to. And it showed studios and content creators: Up your game."</p><p>If 2023 is any guide, hits will come from increasingly unpredictable places.</p><p>That was the case with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/taylor-swift-eras-tour-movie-vs-real-life-best-worst-scenes-2023-10">"Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,"</a> a film released just two months after Swift's recorded concerts in <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-eras-concert-films-a284a04596c6b71b3de7a9bcf9c83b7b">a first-of-its-kind distribution deal with AMC Theatres</a>. It grossed $250 million worldwide, and was followed by the similarly released "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/beyonce-renaissance-world-tour-movie-premiere-best-photos-lizzo-2023-11">another No. 1 debut.</a></p><p>More surprising was "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sound-of-freedom-deemed-box-office-hit-liberals-have-doubts-2023-7">Sound of Freedom</a>," a $15 million film from the independent Angel Studios, which matched Swift with $250 million worldwide. It was released with a unique "pay it forward" program that allowed people to donate tickets.</p><p>Going into 2023, no one was betting "Sound of Freedom" would outgross "The Marvels" or that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/five-nights-at-freddys-cast-vs-video-game-characters-photos-2023-10">"Five Nights at Freddy's"</a> would have a bigger opening weekend than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/indiana-jones-dial-of-destiny-harrison-ford-emotional-evolution-2023-7">"Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny."</a></p><div type="image" title="A photo of Teyonah Parris playing Captain Monica Rambeau in The Marvels." height="1716" width="3299" msid="106459660" hostid="261" sizebytes="77980"></div><p>"There are going to be examples of big-budget, traditional blockbusters that do well," says Dergarabedian. "But for every one of those, there have been two that failed. An audience that's finding a lot of interesting material on streaming is becoming more open to films like '<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/godzilla-minus-one-us-release-date-watch-tickets-2023-11">Godzilla Minus One</a>,' <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-india-4d04b6d032cabfc91b6d0beb6642c1ef">Indian cinema</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/box-office-hayao-miyazaki-boy-heron-godzilla-81158fbde74556aa7add3be4f594f4c6">Japanese anime</a>. There's a shift in audience taste and studios need to get a handle on this."</p><p>That poses as much of a challenge as an opportunity to studios. If more-of-the-same no longer has quite the same appeal for moviegoers, an industry that for years has depended on sequels, prequels, reboots and remakes to make up the bulk of its profits may require new creativity.</p><p>The Western didn't vanish all at once. After two decades of ubiquity, it began going out of style in the 1960s. And the Western, of course, continues to be rich territory for filmmakers. This year, 81-year-old <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/martin-scorsese-set-real-life-killers-of-the-flower-moon-2023-10">Martin Scorsese</a> made his first Western in "Killers of the Flower Moon," the three-hour-plus $200 million epic from Apple Studios.</p><p>The superhero movie, likewise, won't ever die. But its heyday might have reached its <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/0a72e05fc40e406ca07079abc2249a7c">endgame.</a></p>

The movie industry is at an 'inflection point' going into 2024

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="442750" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Zack-Snyder">Zack Snyder</keyword>'s new zombie-heist movie, "<keyword id="7697955" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Army-of-the-Dead">Army of the Dead</keyword>," is set to arrive on <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> on May 21.</li><li>The director said there were scenes he cut from the movie that were "too much."</li><li>This included a <keyword id="794509" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="zombie">zombie</keyword> male stripper with "a huge penis with a bite taken out of it."</li></ul><p>Zack Snyder says there was a scene in his new zombie action movie, "Army of the Dead," that was cut because it pushed the boundaries too far, even for him.</p><p>In an interview with <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/zack-snyder-interview-daughter-justice-league-extended-cut-8btrztrp2">The Sunday Times</a>, Snyder was asked whether he had to remove any scenes from the coming Netflix movie, which is rated R, because they contained moments that might cross a line. The answer was yes.</p><p>"We had a sequence where one of the male strippers had a huge penis with a bite taken out of it," Snyder said. "We thought that was too much."</p><p><a href="https://sg.news.yahoo.com/zack-snyder-army-of-the-dead-trailer-dave-bautista-justice-league-netflix-162252102.html">Snyder has previously said he got carte blanche</a> with this movie, so it is unlikely we'll ever get a <a href="https://www.insider.com/zack-snyder-justice-league-cut-removes-cringeworthy-scenes-women">Snyder cut</a> of this film featuring the zombie male strippers in all their glory.</p><p>While viewers won't get to see zombie strippers with chewed-up penises, there should be plenty of other zombie action to entice audiences, including an undead tiger.</p><p>The zombified tiger, named Valentine, was actually based on one of Carole Baskin's tigers, and the visual-effects team even spent a week at Baskin's sanctuary studying the creature. This all happened before "Tiger King" aired, as <a href="https://www.insider.com/army-of-the-dead-zombie-tiger-carole-baskin-tiger-2021-4">Deborah Snyder explained</a> during a recent "Army of the Dead" Justice Con panel.</p><p>"I remember Marcus [Taormina], our visual-effects supervisor, spent like a week down there. And we were like, 'Well, at least you got out alive!'" she said.</p><p>"We didn't even know at the time, and I remember watching it. It wasn't until later and Marcus goes, 'You know where Valentine came from, right?'"</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/zack-snyder-army-of-the-dead-trailer-netflix-2021-4">The trailer</a>, released in April, featured Valentine heavily - so you can bet the big undead cat will be getting a lot of screen time come the full release of the movie in select theaters on May 14 and then on Netflix on May 21.</p><p>The movie follows a group of mercenaries heading into a zombie-filled Las Vegas in an effort to pull off one hell of a heist.</p><p>Starring Dave Bautista, this will be Zack Snyder's return to the zombie genre, having made his directorial debut in 2004 with "Dawn of the Dead," the remake of George A. Romero's 1978 movie. He told The Times that his new zombie picture would again follow the sensibilities of Romero, the godfather of zombie movies.</p><p>"George Romero said it was all social commentary," he said. "And we felt obliged to do that with this movie. Editorialize a little bit and zombie movies are a great place to talk about us as a people. Ours is a monster movie where the monster is us. It is a social movie more than a science movie - the science is pretty iffy!"</p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Veteran TV actor Walton Goggins gets some time on the big screen this weekend as he plays the villain in "Tomb Raider."</strong></li><li><strong>He talked to Business Insider about coming up with the right tone for the character.</strong></li><li><strong>He also teased his next big TV role, playing Jack Vincennes in the series adaptation of James Ellroy's "L.A. Confidential."</strong></li><li><strong>And we chatted about his Oscar win in 2002.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Walton Goggins is one of those actors you can't help but root for.</br></p><p>From his breakout performance in the 2000s FX hit "The Shield," to his Emmy-nominated work on "Justified," to his recent string of impressive performances in Quentin Tarantino movies ("Django Unchained" and "The Hateful Eight"), he's done it all over his 28-year career. But only recently has he gotten cast in the high-profile projects he deserves (upcoming ones include "Ant-Man and The Wasp" and a TV series on the popular James Ellroy book "L.A. Confidential").</p><p>Goggins also plays the villain in "Tomb Raider" (in theaters Friday) opposite Alicia Vikander in the title role. In a movie that tries very hard to show its hero Lara Croft is not a superhero but instead an ordinary person doing extraordinary things, Goggins used that real-world template to craft Mathias Vogel. Vogel is the leader of the expedition to locate a hidden tomb on a mysterious island who, after seven years of searching, has gone a little mad and is obsessed with finding the tomb so he can return to his family.</p><p>Business Insider talked to Goggins about crafting this grounded character, preparing to take on the role of Jack Vincennes in the "L.A. Confidential" TV version, and the night he won an Oscar.</p><p><strong>Jason Guerrasio: First off, Mathias Vogel - he's a relatable villain.&#xa0;</strong></p><p><strong>Walton Goggins:</strong> You know what, I'll take that. Okay.<br>&#xa0;<br><strong>Guerrasio: Because if I was on an island for seven years just blowing up rocks I would probably lose it too.</strong></br></br></p><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> I think so. If you really take a walk in his shoes - that he's a father and the day he left his family he kissed them all on the cheek and said he would be back in a year - you understand him. Desperate people do desperate things and that was my only way into him.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: I feel you could have done this role two ways: Play him really crazy and do a scenery-chewing performance or do what you did - make him more grounded.&#xa0;</strong><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> You know I had a lengthy discussion with Roar Uthaug, our director, on a Skype call and I said, "If you want me to be a part of this story I think this is how I can help you tell it." It was in a grounded way. And I thought Alicia was going to do the same thing and Roar wanted to tell a similar story so we were all on the same page. To take it out of the realm of superpowers because Lara Croft doesn't have them. With everything I've been fortunate enough to do that's always been a part of my experience, be truthful to who these characters are. Even how grandiose Lee Russell was in "Vice Principals," he's still a person in the world with deep pain. That's what interested me.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Was the "Tomb Raider" role also attractive because it's basically a one-off in the franchise? You don't have to be stuck with a character for years. You can get in and out.&#xa0;</strong></p><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> Huh, no one has asked me that. If I was offered a character in a franchise in a meaningful way I would have done that, for sure. But I don't think about those things. For this, this is a complete journey for this character and that's really satisfying.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Is your character also a one-off in "Ant-Man and The Wasp?"</strong></p><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> I don't know man, you got to see the movie. [<em>Laughs</em>] We'll see what happens.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: Have you ever auditioned for a major Marvel or DC character that would have locked you into a franchise? Have you gone down that road yet?</strong><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> No. Not beyond what I've participated so far. I look at it like this, honestly, I've been in television for 15 years and however long it takes to tell the story that's how long it takes. For "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286486/?ref_=nv_sr_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Shield,</a>" I don't think [creator] Shawn Ryan had any idea that it would go seven years. But the story goes until the time when it doesn't need to anymore. And that's how we all felt about "Justified" too. So whether it's sequels or franchise, if you're doing it from an authentic place and it rings true then I'm up for it.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Has it been crazy to watch the evolution of television from back on "The Shield" to how it is now? A lot of talent believe it's more rewarding to do TV these days more than movies. That wasn't the case when you started out. Has that been weird to see how things have shifted?</strong></p><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> With TV it's just rewarding because in a serialized story things can play out over a very long time so the opportunities to really explore nuances are there. It's very rewarding right now, but I feel that way about movies. The way they wanted to tell Lara Croft in this "Tomb Raider" movie is very refreshing and different. And this is possible because of what's coming out of TV now, each impact the other.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: You've bounced back and forth from movies and TV for a long time.</strong><br>&#xa0;<br><strong>Goggins:</strong> A long time.&#xa0;</br></br></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: Did things change in the offers you were getting when you starred in back-to-back Tarantino movies?</strong><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> Yeah. Most people who have worked with Quentin you measure your life in "before Quentin Tarantino" and "after Quentin Tarantino." But for me it's never been more complicated than to be good at telling stories. The cherry on top, though, is working with filmmakers like Quentin.<br>&#xa0;<br><strong>Guerrasio: Will we see you in the next Tarantino movie?</strong></br></br></p><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> Buddy, I don't know who you are talking about right now. [<em>Laughs</em>] Tarantino who? No. He's very private in his process and I respect that. We'll see. Maybe.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: But you've done two movies in with him, are you at the point where you can text him and just say hi or do you just wait and see if you're called on again?</strong></p><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> It's not something that you ever expect to happen again. When you get that call, that golden ticket, you just jump on the ride.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Can you talk a little about playing Jack Vincennes in the upcoming TV version of "L.A. Confidential?"</strong></p><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> I can tell you that it isn't a remake <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119488/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">of the movie</a> (in which Kevin Spacey played Vincennes). It is a telling of James Ellroy's novel and I'm really excited about it.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: I'm actually reading the book again right now. There's so much to the Jack character that was not explored in the movie.</strong></p><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> That's how I feel. I'm just reading Ellroy for the first time now.&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: It's a quick read, right? You just fly through his books.</strong></p><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> Yeah. And the story behind how he found his voice for "L.A. Confidential," from what I was told, is he was told to cut a third of the book and he couldn't do that so we went back to page one and just began cutting words and sentences and did it through the whole book and it became this rapid, quick-fire read. I'm just blown away by it.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: It dawned on me the other day, you are an Oscar winner. You won in 2002 for a short film you starred and produced, "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0222675/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_53" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Accountant,</a>" right?</strong><p><strong>Goggins:</strong> It was myself and my two partners, Ray McKinnon and Lisa Blount, who has since passed away. And in the short film category you can only put two names down for the award, so it was Ray and Lisa, but we all did it together so we all decided we'd walk up on stage. And we timed our speech so we all could talk in 30 seconds and not piss anyone off. It came from the heart and it <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0ES5okUM2E&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=1m59s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brought the house down</a>. And that's hard to do after Sidney Poitier just got his lifetime achievement award. <p><em>Michell Smith tells this story:</em> Prior to his return to Apple, it was obvious that the company was in trouble. Larry Ellison had floated the idea of a hostile takeover of the company, but it seemed to some of us Apple watchers that then-CEO Gil Amelio's turnaround plan might work.</p>
<p>I wrote an impassioned email to Steve at Pixar, pleading with him to find something else to do with his time. "Please," I implored him, "<a href="http://www.quora.com/Steve-Jobs/What-are-the-best-stories-about-people-randomly-meeting-Steve-Jobs/answer/Michell-Smith">don't come back to Apple, you'll ruin it</a>."</p>

<p>Jack Heringer was a childhood friend of Jobs from early 1960s, but they parted company when they went to different middle schools. Then, in 1976, they met in a store: <br /><br />He showed up, recognized me and called me over. "Aren't you Jack Heringer from grammar school?" he asked. And, in that millisecond, my life's single most regretful experience occurred. I replied, " Yes that's me...and WHO ARE YOU?" I pretended I didn't remember him at all.</p>
<p>I have been kicking myself forever since!!!!!!!!!</p>
<h3>Jobs met this woman who was smoking at dinner and did not like it one bit.</h3>
<p><em>William Matthies and five others had dinner with Jobs in the early 1980s in New York:</em> Dinner was over and while we waited for desert, Ann lit up a cigarette (remember this was the early '80's in NYC), holding it away and blowing smoke away from the rest of us at the table. Steve, who was seated next to Ann, gave no indication that this bothered him. He simply went on talking animatedly as he had all dinner.</p>
<p>At one point Ann put her lit cigarette in an ashtray the opposite side of Steve. He never looked at it but must have seen her put it down because without so much as a glance toward her or the cigarette, without breaking from whatever topic he was currently holding forth on at that moment, he reached across her, <a href="http://www.quora.com/Steve-Jobs/What-are-the-best-stories-about-people-randomly-meeting-Steve-Jobs/answer/William-Matthies">picked the cigarette up from the ashtray, and dropped it in her half full water glass</a>.</p>
<p>I can still see the stunned looks on everyone's face except Steve who continued to educate the rest of us on...I have no idea.</p>

<p>Roy Pereira bumped into Jobs while doing the groceries:</p>
<p>I bumped into Steve at the Palo Alto Whole Foods near both of our homes.  He was in front of me in line paying for his groceries. It was the express checkout and he was wearing his traditional black turtle-neck. This was back in the early 2000s.</p>
<p>Here was a very wealthy, smart guy <a href="http://www.quora.com/Steve-Jobs/What-are-the-best-stories-about-people-randomly-meeting-Steve-Jobs/answer/Roy-Pereira">arguing with the cashier about what the correct change was</a> for his purchase. He was demanding that he got another quarter ($0.25) for his change. This discussion went on for several minutes and held up the line so much that everyone behind him (including us) were getting annoyed.</p>
<h3>The time Jobs got excited by Excel in 1985.</h3>
<p><em>Randall Edwards met Jobs at an IT conference:</em> I had to get back to work so I headed out of the hotel into a nearby hotel where my car was parked.  I pressed the button for the elevator, the doors opened and there was ... Steve Jobs!</p>
<p>I told him how much I enjoyed his presentation and shook his hand. He asked me what I did and I told him I was an IT Consultant. <a href="http://www.quora.com/Steve-Jobs/What-are-the-best-stories-about-people-randomly-meeting-Steve-Jobs/answer/Randall-Edwards">He told me about this amazing software that Microsoft was working on called "Excel"</a>.  It is going to be phenomenal and that I should check it out. I told him I would.</p>

I introduced myself and mentioned that a couple of the engineers were ex-Apple people. ...</p>
<p>For the next half an hour he went on to rant pretty much non-stop... about the arrogance of Apple (!!!), the quality of their products, and anything unsavory you could think of. There were a lot of 'you Apple people' in there. I tried to break in and mention that we weren't really related to Apple (except  the demo was running on a Mac Powerbook) but there was no stopping him.</p>
<p>"<a href="http://www.quora.com/Steve-Jobs/What-are-the-best-stories-about-people-randomly-meeting-Steve-Jobs/answer/Ramin-Firoozye">Boy, what a dick</a>," I remember thinking. It went on and on.</p>
<p>… Then he comes back in. I was sitting down. He gets in front of the whiteboard and starts drawing notes. For the next I-don't-know-how-long he mapped out precisely how the product could be rolled out, the strategy for taking it to market, how it should be positioned, what other parts would be needed to fill in the gaps, all the way down to the features that should be taken out or added. It was the most amazing, useful, spot-on, and entertaining display of product management erudition I'd ever seen. He completely understood the product, the space, and what it could be used for.</p>
<h3>The day Jobs visited a rival electronics store across the street from Apple in 2007</h3>
<p><em>Mark Young remembers Jobs' appearance at the Helio store in 2007, located in Palo Alto across street from the Apple Store. Jobs had poked his head in once and the store staff did not recognize him:</em> Two weeks later, the same manager was inside the store giving a demo of the amazing Helio smartphone to some prospective customers when he was interrupted by someone at the door. It was the same guy in the black turtleneck and blue jeans. <p>Then the call was transferred to a guy named "Tim". I'm still not sure what Tim's last name was... is it even possible that it was Tim Cook? I don't know what Tim's history is at Apple.</p>
<h3>The day Jobs ate unrecognized at an Indian restaurant.</h3>
<p><em>Anurag Wadehra was at the restaurant:</em> So, it was with great amusement, we watched Steve raise his hand several times to attract the attention of the waiter, who summarily ignored him. As the only white guy in the restaurant, we thought he would be instantly recognized and served with special attention. Instead, <a href="http://www.quora.com/Steve-Jobs/What-are-the-best-stories-about-people-randomly-meeting-Steve-Jobs/answer/Anurag-Wadehra">he had the worst table in the house</a>. A bored waiter passed plastic menu cards at his family without giving a second glance. Eventually, he did get served with the mass efficiency of an overworked staff. And, no one bothered him during his dinner either.</p>
<p>My wife and I observed in awe as Steve and his family enjoyed a quiet meal in the riotous, inexpensive place in the heart of Silicon Valley. It dawned on us that no one in the restaurant had recognized Steve in his low key attire and a stubble. At the end, when no one came to his table to present the check, Steve rose up, dropped a few cash notes on the table and walked out, as the server wiped his table.</p>
<p>Just then, the manager walked by, and I asked him, "Did you know that was Steve Jobs?". He smiled and gave me the Indian head shake - a cross between yes and no. To this day, I don't know what he meant.</p>

I had also worked at Sun Microsystems as a contract recruiter. In September of that year, Steve invited me to his offices on Deer Creek Road in Palo Alto for an informal interview. He was 45 minutes late. So now our cafe staff are company employees and when the engineers have to work late we can have the cafe stay open. Now we have vegetarian options and more variety. With better food people stay on campus and interact with each other more."</p>
<h3>The day Jobs was nearly killed in the parking lot at Apple.</h3>

He may or may not have held up his hand, winced, then smiled and waved as those of us who may or may not have been Apple employees in the car looked on in complete shock, too terrified to wave back. He may or may not have jogged out of harm's way at that point, while we may or may not have just sat there, stunned.  We may or may not have switched drivers for the rest of our training week out there.</p>
<h3>This couple asked Jobs to settle a bet over how the Macintosh was named.</h3>
<p><em>Bill Sheppard's wife had long maintained the name came from a contest for school students:</em> We approached Steve and asked if he could settle a marital dispute for us.  Without any hint of a smile he responded "if I can have one of your children" (which didn't come across at all creepy, though I see as I write this that it could be interpreted that way).  We offered the dog (he wasn't interested), then my wife told the story of the naming contest.  Steve said that Apple had a large marketing department to do things like pick names for their computers, and <a href="http://www.quora.com/Steve-Jobs/What-are-the-best-stories-about-people-randomly-meeting-Steve-Jobs/answer/Bill-Sheppard">it was absurd to think they'd leave that to fifth graders</a>.</p>
