India's refurbished smartphone market witnesses accelerated growth

Revenues of organised <keyword id="21758362" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gold-jewellery-retailers" source="keywords">gold jewellery retailers</keyword> are expected to surge by 22-25% this fiscal year, driven by the sharp reduction in import duties on <keyword id="18712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold" source="Orion">gold</keyword> in the July Budget, according to a <keyword id="20874793" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRISIL-report" source="keywords">CRISIL report</keyword>. A recent analysis by CRISIL Ratings, which examined 58 gold jewellery retailers representing a third of the <keyword id="21165181" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="organised-sector" source="keywords">organised sector</keyword>'s revenues, indicates that the sector will benefit from improved <keyword id="19900859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="working-capital" source="keywords">working capital</keyword> management. Although many retailers plan significant store expansions--estimated at 12-14% of existing stores--lower gold prices will reduce inventory costs, providing working capital relief. The organised jewellery sector, which accounts for just over a third of the overall market, is poised for a stronger financial performance compared to its unorganised counterpart. The steep reduction in <keyword id="20069572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="import-duty" source="keywords">import duty</keyword> has come at a crucial time for the industry, as retailers prepare for the festive and marriage seasons. Following the price decline, volumes are expected to grow by 3-5% this fiscal year, reversing earlier projections of stagnant demand. Gold prices had been steadily rising since February 2024, which had subdued consumer demand and led to revenue growth driven solely by higher realisations rather than increased sales volumes. Himank Sharma, Director at CRISIL Ratings, highlighted the timely impact of the duty cut and said, "The duty cuts to their decadal lows have come at an opportune time for the gold jewellery retailers as they start stocking for the festive and marriage seasons from the latter half of August." He added, "However, the inventory losses on the existing stock due to the price cuts will be partially mitigated by the reduced spends on marketing and discounts, as demand revives. All said <keyword id="19957745" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profitability" source="keywords">profitability</keyword> will see a marginal dip on-year to 7.1-7.2%." Despite the pressure on profitability, retailers' cash flows will improve due to higher revenues, enabling them to pursue expansion plans. Store expansions, expected to increase by 12-14%, will require higher inventory levels. However, the lower input costs resulting from reduced gold prices will balance out the additional working capital requirements. Gaurav Arora, Associate Director at CRISIL Ratings, added, "Gold jewellery retailers will maintain comfortable financial metrics this fiscal, with total outside liabilities to tangible net worth (TOL/TNW) and interest coverage ratios remaining around 1.0 and 9 times, respectively. These will be moderately better than our earlier expectations, keeping credit profiles stable." As the festive season approaches, gold prices remain around 17% higher than last year's average, which is expected to sustain demand and further drive revenues in the second half of the fiscal year. However, potential volatility in gold prices, changes in government regulations, and shifts in consumer sentiment will need to be closely monitored. The combination of reduced prices, increased demand, and improved working capital management is expected to keep the financial outlook for gold jewellery retailers positive, despite the slight dip in profitability. The reduced duty has caused retail gold prices to fall by Rs 4,500-5,000 per 10 grams, leading to increased demand for gold jewellery. The growth projection, 500-600 basis points higher than earlier estimates of 17-19%, is fuelled by higher volumes as more consumers are enticed by the lower prices.

Chatterjee, however, said in the first quarter of this fiscal for players in the sector from QSR and fine dining to casual dining, things have not been very good as 'revenge eating' had diminished, while food inflation coupled with competition from cheaper unorganised players also played a part. Asked about the company's expansion plans, he said,"We are looking at controlled, profitable growth, intentionally done with a geographical expansion of not cannibalising the existing stores." Flagship brand Mainland China, its variant Asia Kitchen by Mainland China will be the main growth drivers along with the new one, Episode One, he added. Last fiscal, he said the company opened four restaurants and similarly another three to four are expected subject to availability of space in time. The signs of recovery in the real estate industry are expected to support aggregate <keyword id="386349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="household-income" source="Orion">household income</keyword> considering it is the second-largest employer in India after <keyword id="6355165" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="agriculture" source="Orion">agriculture</keyword>, says a report by ICICI Securities. The sector generates a variety of jobs including for construction workers and other informal jobs for masons, plumbers, concrete workers, electricians, carpenters, painters, drivers, helpers, loaders, etc. For every square foot that’s built, it helps generate income anywhere between ₹2,000-6,000, depending on the type of building — ranging from basic to high-rise luxury skyscrapers. “Incremental value additions done to the builder-finished construction by end-users can go up to several thousand rupees per square foot depending upon the taste and capability of the end-user,” ICICI Securities says. <div type="image" title="Real estate report 2" msid="98390920" hostid="261" sizebytes="52976"></div> How much does construction pay? The <keyword id="6462448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="construction-sector" source="Orion">construction sector</keyword> is also a better paymaster than agriculture, the report adds. The average income of a construction worker in rural India as per the Labour Bureau statistics is around ₹500-600 per day. In urban areas, it gets higher. “Anecdotal evidence for larger cities indicates the wages are at least 30-40% higher for construction workers with higher skills and experience,” the report says. Another group of professions to benefit from real estate development are mortgage lenders, material suppliers, contractors, architects, designers, engineers, lawyers, real estate brokers, etc. In addition, allied sectors involved in labour-intensive manufacturing activity in the unorganised segment — such as furniture, ceramics, glassware, lightings and other decorative products – also benefit from an upcycle in real estate. Large-scale organised manufacturing like cement, steel, ceramics, plywood, paints, adhesives, etc are also beneficiaries. “Household real estate investment cycle is rising after a decade of stagnation during which its share in gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) dipped from 37% in FY12 to 25% in 2021. The cyclical recovery in residential real estate will boost income growth of related stakeholders mentioned above. Workers involved in the leisure segment, which again is dominated by the unorganised segment, are also likely to see buoyant income growth,” said the report. However, the report mentions that agriculture wages remain a key risk to aggregate income growth, given its large weight within the aggregate workforce. And the prospects of it will depend on how monsoon and agriculture output pans out in FY24. <div type="image" title="real 3" msid="98390948" hostid="261" sizebytes="48628"></div> Wage bills to rise all across ICICI Securities also says that the aggregate wage bill of the private corporate sector has been expanding more than the nominal GDP growth over the past decade. “The trend is likely to continue in FY24 going by recent salary surveys and hiring trends in the formal segment although IT services, with its large weight, is expected to lag,” the report said. According to a survey by Aon, salaries in India are expected to go up by 10.3% in 2023, in spite of concerns around economic volatility. This could be in response to a high attrition rate of 21.4% in 2022. In 2022, the actual salary increase was slightly higher at 10.6%. The projected salary increase for India is the highest among major world economies like China, US and UK, Aon said. Recovery in real estate sector likely to boost household income, says ICICI Securities

<keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> has finally passed the bill mandating 26 weeks of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/maternity-leave">paid maternity leave</a> for women working in the organised sector. Earlier, the tenure was of 12 weeks. 
 
The move will be benefiting about 1.8 million women, working in establishments employing 10 or more people. However, this entitlement will be valid for only up to first two children. In case of a third child, the entitlement would remain for 12 weeks. 
 
It was in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Maternity-benefit-act-amendment-bill-in-rajya-sabha/articleshow/53613481.cms">August last year</a> that the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was passed by the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Rajya-sabha-passes-Maternity-Bill-amendment/articleshow/53666268.cms">Rajya Sabha</a>. Now, India stands third in terms of the number of weeks for maternity leave after Canada (50 weeks) and Norway (44 weeks).

In case of a woman employee legally adopting a child below three months of age and a biological mother who uses her egg to have a surrogate child, there would be 12 weeks of maternity leave. 
 Other than the leave benefit, the Bill also mandates every establishment with 50 or more employees to provide <keyword id="815457" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="crche-facilities">crèche facilities</keyword> within a prescribed distance of the office premises. 
 
The new mothers would be allowed four crèche visits in a day, including her interval for rest.

Indian Govt okays 26 weeks paid maternity leave, mandatory crèches for firms with over 50 people

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is going to address the unorganised sector in his Budget 2016-17. 
 
The Indian government is planning to come out with a national social security card scheme, which is going to benefit nearly 40 crore unorganised workers in the country, accounting for nearly 89% of the total workforce. 
 
Under the scheme, the beneficiaries would be able to avail social security schemes such as Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana, the Atal Pension Yojana, the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, etc under one platform. 
 
This comes under the backdrop of the government’s promise to the workers as they are threatening to go on a day-long demonstration on March 10 against the "anti-labour" policies of the BJP-led NDA government. 
 
The labour ministry has proposed Rs. 1,350 crore for this fiscal to register and issue national social security card to workers. 
 
"The labour ministry will implement and monitor the roll-out of the national social security card across the country because of its outreach to unorganised workers and our past experience of implementing the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana," an official told ET. 
 
The IT ministry was not in the favour of a single card system as citing duplication of work as the government is already in discussions to link welfare schemes with the Aadhaar card.

 An urban consumer in India spends 20.3% of the monthly spend on milk and milk products, according to a survey by the National Sample Survey Organisation released in 2012. Milk is a staple and there is big money to be made in the segment. And yet, dairy companies spend only 1-2% of sales on advertisements, compared to online marketplace Flipkart, which <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/advertising/at-30-of-annual-revenues-flipkart-spends-thrice-as-much-on-ads-as-hul/articleshow/66611156.cms">reportedly</a> spends over 30% of its revenue. While Hindustan Unilever spends about 10% of its sales. “An effective advertisement of soap can win new consumers and additional revenues of ₹20 per new consumer per month whereas an advertisement of dairy brand can win revenues of ₹1,000 per new consumer per month,” an <keyword id="7442614" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Securities-report">ICICI Securities report</keyword> explained. This would also explain why dairy companies do not offer any freebies to consumers and any discounts to distributors are negligible. However, on the down side, the same stickiness in consumer preference also makes it difficult for new entrants to capture customers from established players. The good news is a lot of people are yet to move from buying milk from unorganised neighborhood vendors to picking up branded milk and related products off the shelves. The Indian dairy sector is expected to grow at about 15% compounded annual growth rate, according to ICICI Securities, and there is possibility of steady shift of consumers from unorganised sector to organised sector. The fact that this growth does not need high promotional expenses is an added advantage for newer companies.

With virtually no footfalls, many jewellers mighthave to even shut down their shops, the All India Gem &amp;Jewellery Domestic Council said."Considering the crisis situation, the domestic gem &amp;jewellery sector seeks immediate relief measures to enable thetrade to function smoothly," chairman of the council AnanthaPadmanabhan said in a statement.March, being the last month of the financial year,there are also many due dates of payments for businesses inthe sector, it said."We have sent a recommendation to the prime ministerstating our concern... and we have received a prompt andfavourable response from the PMO," Padmanabhan said.The council also urged the government for deferringthe GST return and extending the time limit for filing it."We have also sought reduction in customs duty to 4per cent. Coronavirus: Gem & jewellery sector seeks prompt govt relief

New Delhi, Feb 18 () Rating agency Ind-Ra has revised the outlook on India's textile sector to negative from stable for 2020-21 as weak domestic demand growth, threat of cheap imports and dwindling incentives and exports are likely to keep volumes muted. Ind-Ra expects withdrawal of incentives under the merchandise exports from India scheme (MEIS) to affect export players of made-ups (home textiles) and garments. "Exporters are likely to remain uncompetitive against counterparts in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey and Vietnam, due to further delays in the implementation of Rebate of State and Centre levy of Taxes. All these factors would lead to margin pressures for exporters in FY21," India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) said. However, it expects key raw material prices to remain low in 2020-21, after a correction in 2019-20, contributing to a modest recovery in margins, stable working capital requirements and steady cash flows.Ind-Ra also anticipates cotton prices to stabilise with improved cotton supply and an inventory build-up in the next fiscal. "The industry adjusting to a low dealer inventory is becoming the new normal. Easing of the GST implementation issues might only provide modest support to demand growth, unless liquidity improves. Liquidity remains chocked, with lack of bank funding and sluggish end-consumer demand," it said.The rating agency estimates yarn production for 2020-21 to remain muted, with lack of visibility on wholesale demand. It also remains negative on the commodity segment and expects a marginal improvement in capacity utilisation in spinning mills under the cotton yarn segment. Sector consolidation will continue in 2020-21, while the mid and small commodity players continuing to struggle. According to Ind-Ra, domestic textile exporters are likely to witness reduced demand on the back of a weak Chinese demand, accompanied by declined cost competitiveness, leading to lower production volumes in 2020-21. However, the rating agency expects regulatory support in form of GST refunds for spinning chains and availability of input tax credit from units operating in the unorganised sector or composition scheme, to improve liquidity in the value chain. The Morbi ceramic industry in Gujarat will receive an estimated investment of ₹15 billion in 2019, with plans to establish 50 new wall tiles manufacturing plants. The world's third largest ceramic industry is banking on India's love for gaudy tiles

New Delhi, Feb 1 () With an aim to strengthen the pension fund regulatory body's regulating role, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday proposed amendments in the PFRDA Act and forming of pension trusts by employees other than government.
Presenting the Union Budget 2020-21, the minister also proposed separating the role of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority of India (PFRDA) from that of trust for government employees.
"Regulating role of PFRDAI requires strengthening. Necessary amendments would be carried out in Pension Fund Regulatory Development Authority of India Act that will also facilitate separation of NPS trust for government employees from PFRDAI," Sitharaman said in her Budget speech in Parliament.
The Pension Fund Regulatory &amp; Development Authority Act was passed in September, 2013 and came to effect from February, 2014.
This would also enable establishment of a pension trust by the employees other than government, the minister said. 
"I am confident that this will motivate citizens to plan for their old age," she added.
Further, to help easy mobility while in jobs, she said the government wishes to infuse into the universal pension coverage with auto enrolment.
"Also, we wish to place such mechanisms which can enable inter-operability and provide safeguards for the accumulated corpus," she said.
The PFRDA regulates the National Pension System (NPS), subscribed by employees of central and state governments as well as by employees of private sector organizations those in unorganised sectors.
It also administers Atal Pension Yojana (APY), which mainly caters to the unorganised sector and low income groups.
As of November 9, 2019, the overall number of NPS and APY subscribers in the country crossed 3.12 crore with Asset under Management (AUM) of over Rs 3.85 lakh crore, as per the PFRDA data. KPM MKJ
