<ul class="summary-list"><li>Banksy said his new exhibition is in Glasgow because of its iconic Duke of Wellington statue.</li><li>Glaswegians have been placing cones on the statue's head for the past 40 years.</li></ul><p>The artist Banksy recently announced his first solo exhibition in 14 years is being held in <a href="https://www.insider.com/scotland-travel-mistakes-american-tourists-make-to-avoid-2022-7">my home city of Glasgow, Scotland</a>. </p><p>The exhibition, titled <a href="https://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/event/2/banksy-cut-and-run" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Cut and Run,"</a> opened on Sunday and will take place until August 28 at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA). </p><p>The reason Banksy chose Glasgow is pretty simple: He adores the iconic Duke of Wellington statue that stands outside GoMA just as much as us locals do.</p><p>The statue of Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington and former prime minister of the UK, was erected in 1844, according to <a href="https://www.scotsman.com/arts-and-culture/scots-monuments-glasgow-duke-of-wellington-statue-1557896" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Scotsman</a>. But the reason the statue is so famous isn't about Wellesley at all; it's all thanks to the rebellious sense of humor of Glaswegians, who have been placing a cone on top of the statue's head for the past 40 years. </p><div type="image" title="duke of wellington glasgow" height="1512" width="2016" msid="101141662" hostid="261" sizebytes="321374"></div><p>In a sign welcoming guests to his new exhibit, Banksy said the statue is his "favorite work of art in the UK" because of the cone, <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-65914456" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC News reports.</a></p><p>"Despite the best efforts of the council and the police, every time one is removed another takes its place," he said, the publication added.</p><h2>I can confirm that the statue is iconic and beloved by Glaswegians</h2><p>As someone who was born and raised in Glasgow, the Duke of Wellington statue — which I've always simply referred to as "the cone statue" — has been a constant in my life. </p><p>I can't remember a time when the statue didn't have its cone, and throughout the years, Glaswegians have found new and hilarious ways to reinvent our favorite landmark. At Christmastime, it's not uncommon for men dressed as Santa Claus to climb on the statue for a photo-op, as <a href="https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/homenews/19800318.santa-claus-mounts-glasgows-duke-wellington-statue/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Herald</a> reported in 2021.</p><p>The statue is seen as a symbol of the city, and you are unlikely to enter a tourist or art shop without seeing a postcard, coaster, fridge magnet, or painting without the statue on it. There is even a <a href="https://www.citycentremuraltrail.co.uk/murals/muralabout/52" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mural in the city</a> with a caricatured version of the statue alongside the phrase "Are you Dancin?" in reference to Scotland's <a href="https://www.insider.com/scottish-traditions-i-grew-up-with-that-americans-find-surprising-2022-1">famous ceilidh dancing</a>. </p><div type="image" title="glasgow mural" height="1512" width="2016" msid="101141663" hostid="261" sizebytes="542980"></div><p>And the landmark can hold a lot of meaning to those who no longer live in the city. </p><p>Ashton Burger, an American who spent an exchange semester in Glasgow in the spring of 2018, told me she got a tattoo of the cone when she returned to Scotland for a vacation earlier this year.</p><p>Burger said she studied abroad at the University of Strathclyde after a difficult period in her life — her father had passed away in June 2017. She said her semester in Glasgow "could not have come at a better time," and she met some of her best friends in the city.</p><div type="image" title="ashton cone tattoo" height="2274" width="3024" msid="101141664" hostid="261" sizebytes="280722"></div><p>"I knew I wanted to get a tattoo representing Glasgow while actually in the city. The traffic cone was the perfect idea," she said.</p><p>"It's so specifically Glasgow and it's absolutely one of my favorite things about the city. I look at my tattoo and am immediately reminded of how much Glasgow means to me and how much my experience there helped me when I most needed it," she added.</p><p>Burger's story reminded me that the cone is more than just a fun punch line. For some, it's a symbol of how special Glasgow is to them. And it reminds me how proud I am to be from this city.</p><p>I can only hope the Banksy exhibition will inspire more people to visit and learn about Glasgow.</p>

The phenomena could happen again, which is probably the reason why <keyword id="1943359" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="University-of-Strathclyde-Glasgow">University of Strathclyde Glasgow</keyword> has taken upon them and are introducing a programme to tackle asteroids and <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="space">space</keyword> <keyword id="44114" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="debris">debris</keyword>.<br />

The university has invited world-leading scientists who will take upon the task of deflecting asteroids and manipulating space debris. Called the Stardust programme – it aims to protect the planet and space assets from catastrophic impacts from these roaming space rocks. The university has taken the first step to find the postgraduate researchers for the Stardust initiative. They will train the new scientists, engineers and policy-makers from a pool of 100 qualified applicants.<br />
<br /> Big names such as Prof. <keyword id="1943358" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bruce-Conway">Bruce Conway</keyword>, an expert on space trajectory optimisation from the <keyword id="174662" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="University-of-Illinois">University of Illinois</keyword> and Prof. Hiroshi Yamakawa, from <keyword id="492144" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kyoto-University">Kyoto University</keyword>, expert on manipulation of asteroids and space debris will give their two cents during the week of activities at the university. The Stardust network will employ and train 11 post-graduate and 4 post-doctorate researchers over 4 years, including 2 PhD students (Research Assistants) and 1 post-doctorate Research Fellow at Strathclyde.<br />

All of them with one and only one aim, to deflect and manage space debris better. This is a good initiative taken up by the university that might help save lives and earths infrastructure in the future.<br />

Now A Space Program To Tackle Asteroids

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>There are only two weeks to go until Britons vote in the General Election and polls show that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/the-oddest-questions-included-in-the-general-election-polls-2015-4">Britain's main stream political parties are neck and neck in the polls</a>.</p><p>Meanwhile, according to the latest poll by <a href="http://www.highfliers.co.uk/">High Fliers Research</a>, the political party British students intend to vote for swing wildly depending on where they are taught. </p><p>The research, which involved surveying <a href="http://www.highfliers.co.uk/download/2015/student_politics/SPReport15.pdf">13,039 final year students at 30 UK universities, showed that David Cameron's Conservatives are the most popular party</a> at 14 out of the 30 universities. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Christine Dawood was told comms with the Titan sub were often patchy, The New York Times reported.</li><li>Dawood said she was "looking out on the ocean" in case the sub resurfaced after it lost contact. </li></ul><p>Communication between OceanGate's Titan sub and its mothership was often patchy, <a href="https://www.insider.com/titanic-submersible-shazahda-dawood-suleman-christine-stepped-back-rubiks-cube-2023-6">Christine Dawood</a> said she was told, per <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/02/us/titan-submersible-passengers.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>. </p><p>Dawood, whose husband, Shahzada, and 19-year-old son, Suleman, died on the sub, told the newspaper that comms failures were common after teams lost contact between the Polar Prince and the Titan. </p><p>She said that OceanGate told her that the expedition would be aborted and that the Titan would drop weights so it could resurface if it couldn't reestablish communication after an hour.</p><p>"I was also looking out on the ocean, in case I could maybe see them surfacing," she told the newspaper. <br /><br /><a href="https://www.insider.com/who-is-shahzada-dawood-pakistani-millionaire-son-suleman-titanic-sub-2023-6">Shahzada and Suleman Dawood</a> were among the five passengers on OceanGate's sub that imploded on an expedition to the Titanic's wreckage. </p><p>Shahzada was a 48-year-old multimillionaire who came from one of Pakistan's wealthiest families. He was a <a href="https://twitter.com/britishasiantst/status/1672145240122064896?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">member of the British Asian Trust</a>, a charity that the British royal family started. </p><p>Suleman was studying at Strathclyde University in Glasgow. A statement from the university <a href="https://www.strath.ac.uk/whystrathclyde/news/2023/statementfromourprincipal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said it was</a> "<a href="https://www.strath.ac.uk/whystrathclyde/news/2023/statementfromourprincipal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">profoundly saddened</a>" to learn of the deaths. <br /><br />Christine Dawood <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-66009436" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told BBC News</a> last week that she'd planned to go on the expedition with her husband, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/titanic-submersible-shazahda-dawood-suleman-christine-stepped-back-rubiks-cube-2023-6">let her son take her place</a> "because he really wanted to go." She was still on the Polar Prince with the crew when the US Coast Guard announced that it had found debris from the Titan. </p><p>Her 17-year-old daughter, Alina Dawood, was also on the Polar Prince on the day of the dive. The Times reported that OceanGate waived a rule to allow her to join. </p><p>The Titan sub was reported missing on June 18, and the US Coast Guard said four days later that the passengers all died after its teams found debris from the submersible on the ocean floor.</p><p>The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, which is investigating the Polar Prince, <a href="https://www.tsb.gc.ca/eng/medias-media/communiques/marine/2023/m23a0169-20230628.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said this week </a>that it had sent the ship's voyage-data recorder to a lab in Ottawa for analysis. </p><p>OceanGate didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider made outside normal working hours. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Suleman Dawood brought a Rubik's cube onto the Titan in an effort to break a world record, per <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66015851">the BBC</a>.</li><li>His mother, Christine Dawood, said the 19-year-old was a big fan of the puzzle and could solve it in 12 seconds.</li></ul><p>Suleman Dawood, the 19-year-old onboard <a href="https://www.insider.com/titan-missing-submersible-photos-interior-exterior-dock-launch-2023-6">the Titan</a>, brought a Rubik's cube with him because he wanted to try and break a world record, his mother Christine Dawood told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66015851" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the BBC</a>. </p><p>"He said, 'I'm going to solve the Rubik's cube 3,700 meters below sea at the Titanic,'" his mother said.</p><p>The teenager, who was a <a href="https://www.strath.ac.uk/whystrathclyde/news/2023/statementfromourprincipal/">student at the University of Strathclyde</a> in Glasgow, the UK, contacted the Guinness World Records about his efforts before the expedition, she said.</p><p>She added that his father, Shahzada Dawood — one of Pakistan's richest men — even brought a camera along to record his son's world record attempt.</p><p>The teenager was a big fan of the puzzle and carried it everywhere he went, Christine told the BBC. He was so adept at it that he could solve it in 12 seconds.</p><p>A Guinness World Records spokesperson confirmed to Insider that the organization did receive an application from Suleman earlier this year, with a new record title suggestion for "the deepest Rubik's Cube solved."</p><p>"We were saddened by the events of last week and send our condolences to Suleman Dawood's mother Christine and all those affected," the representative added.</p><p>Christine and her daughter, Alina Dawood, were onboard <a href="https://www.insider.com/investigators-probe-polar-prince-ship-carried-titan-submersible-oceangate-titanic-2023-6">the Polar Prince</a>, the Titan's support ship, when the submersible first <a href="https://www.insider.com/missing-titanic-tourist-sub-everything-we-know-so-far-2023-6">lost contact</a>.</p><p>"I didn't comprehend at that moment what it meant  — and then it just went downhill from there," she told the BBC.</p><p>Christine added that both she and her daughter will try to learn how to solve the Rubik's cube puzzle in honor of Suleman.</p><p><em>June 27, 2023: This article has been updated to include comments from the Guinness World Records.</em></p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I currently live in Glasgow, Scotland, but have also spent time in London and the US.</li><li>I've made friends in the most unlikely of places, including recently, on a random city bench.</li></ul><p>These days, I seem to make friends wherever I go, but this wasn't always the case.</p><p>I grew up in a small town outside <a href="https://www.insider.com/scotland-travel-mistakes-american-tourists-make-to-avoid-2022-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Glasgow, Scotland</a>, where I had my <a href="https://www.insider.com/identical-twins-what-not-to-say-2022-2#dont-ask-if-you-are-identical-why-is-your-sister-taller-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">twin sister</a>, Aimee, by my side for most of my childhood and adolescence. I didn't have to try very hard to make friends, because I was always with my sister. Meeting strangers is something I never had to do on my own.</p><p>But that changed when I became an adult, and I didn't have Aimee to lean on. A couple of years into my degree at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, I had the opportunity to spend a <a href="https://www.insider.com/we-compared-our-us-study-abroad-experiences-2022-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">four-month exchange semester in Pennsylvania</a>, where I knew nobody. Then, after graduating in 2018, I packed up my life and <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-that-surprised-me-moved-from-scotland-to-london-2022-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">moved to London</a> for work, where I also didn't know a soul. These experiences helped break me out of my comfort zone, particularly when it came to befriending strangers.</p><p>I <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-and-worst-things-about-living-in-scotland-uk-2023-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">moved back to Glasgow</a> in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And even though I'm now in a city where many of my childhood friends reside, I've continued to use the skills I've learned to meet new people. Here are some of the most important things I've learned about befriending strangers, whether in a foreign city or in your hometown.</p><h2>You have to treat it the same way you'd treat dating</h2><p>I've made friends in some of the most unlikely places, from a rock-climbing course in Pennsylvania to a concert in Scotland.</p><p>And the most important lesson I've learned is that you should treat making friends the same way you would treat dating. You have to be open to meeting people where you'd least expect to. And then when you do meet them, it's about taking a leap of faith and having an open mind. </p><p>Last summer, I met a woman named Anshu while sitting on a bench in George Square in Glasgow. We were both reading our respective books, when a woman approached us and asked if we wanted free ice cream. We politely declined.</p><div type="image" title="Mikhaila and Anshu" height="1280" width="960" msid="98234059" hostid="261" sizebytes="71898"></div><p>After the woman left, Anshu turned to me. </p><p>"Does that usually happen in Glasgow?" she asked.</p><p>I laughed and told her no — but rather than stop the conversation there, I asked how long she had been in Glasgow. Anshu told me she's from India, and had just moved to Glasgow after previously relocating to London in 2019. That's all the information I required to give her my phone number, and I told her to let me know if she wanted to meet up sometime.</p><p>When I walked home, it dawned on me that I might have come across rather forward. What if she thought I was weird? What if she never texted?</p><p>I didn't have to worry though, as Anshu texted me a couple of days later. After meeting up a couple of times, I introduced her to my friend group. Now, we're very close, and we spend our weekends meeting up in coffee shops, bars, or at each other's apartments. None of our friends can imagine not having her around. </p><div type="image" title="mikhaila friends" height="1024" width="768" msid="98234061" hostid="261" sizebytes="52032"></div><h2>Everyone should live with strangers at least once in their life</h2><p>Of course, I understand that befriending strangers on a random city bench doesn't work for everyone. One alternative suggestion I have is to live with strangers in a shared apartment, which was helpful for me when I lived away from home. </p><p>The first time I lived with strangers was during my semester abroad in 2016. I became fast friends with my roommates, as well as the other people who lived on my floor — many of whom I still keep in contact with to this day. </p><p>When I moved to London a few years later, living alone was an expense I couldn't afford. But due to the positive experience I had in the US, I had an open mind when it came to having roommates.</p><p>I ended up finding a room to rent in Shoreditch, East London, on <a href="https://www.spareroom.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpareRoom</a>, where I lived with two women who were a similar age to me. We got along extremely well, and I found myself spending more and more time with them after work and over the weekends. </p><div type="image" title="mikhaila" height="960" width="720" msid="98234064" hostid="261" sizebytes="34550"></div><p>Although I decided to leave London due to the pandemic, we still stay in touch. One of my former roommates, Cécile, has even come to visit me in Scotland, and we still speak on the phone regularly. </p><h2>Join a local club, or if there are no clubs in your area, create one</h2><p>Equally, I can understand if living with strangers is not your thing, or if you've heard too many <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/these-ultimate-roommate-horror-stories-will-convince-you-to-live-alone-2018-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">roommate horror stories </a>that make you want to live alone forever. </p><p>But even if you don't have roommates, that doesn't mean you can't get to know your neighbors. </p><p>I moved in with my partner in an apartment in Glasgow last year, and this year we relocated to another apartment just outside the city center. We've been here for a few weeks now, and I loved it instantly. The only thing that could make it better, I decided, is if I could make friends with my neighbors. </p><p>Luckily, there's already a Facebook group for residents of my building, so I used that to ask if anyone would be interested in joining a book group. There were at least a dozen responses from people of all ages and backgrounds. </p><p>We had our first meeting last week, so it's too early to tell if anyone from the group will become a lifelong friend. But sometimes, that's not even the point. It's about having the ability to put yourself out there — so that when the right person comes along, you won't be afraid to make the first move. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>The <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>'s central <keyword id="6355272" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bank">bank</keyword> wants workers to return to the office 1 day a week from September.</strong></li><li>Its deputy governor says the decision has been made following consultation with staff.</li><li>Return-to-work plans vary in finance, with some big banks insisting workers return 5 days a week.</li></ul><p>The Bank of England has shed light on its <keyword id="10501397" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hybrid-working">hybrid working</keyword> plans. </p><p>The British central bank says that come September 2021 it will expect the majority of its 4,000 employees to return to the office at least one day a week, according to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jul/05/bank-of-england-to-ask-staff-to-work-in-office-one-day-a-week">The Guardian</a>.</p><p>The announcement comes the day after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced plans to lift all coronavirus restrictions in the UK by July 19th. </p><p>Joanna Place, the central bank's deputy governor and chief operating officer, said the decision had been made following consultation with staff at the bank, and that 250 "digital ninjas" had been recruited to help employees make the transition. </p><p>Eventually, the bank plans to see staff return up to four days a week, but Place accepted that this will take some time. </p><p>The approach differs from others in the banking sector, which has yet to reach a broad consensus.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-junior-bankers-return-office-new-york-salt-lake-rotation-2021-7">Goldman Sachs</a> and JP Morgan at one end, want staff to spend the majority of their time in the office once COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deutsche-bank-ceo-graduates-work-office-5-days-tina-lee-2021-6">Deutsche Bank's UK CEO meanwhile says that despite adopting flexible working</a>, she wants graduate bankers to be in the office five days a week. </p><p>At the other end of the scale, Nationwide, a UK building society, has said that it will allow its 13,000 staff to work from wherever they do their best work.  </p><p>According to the latest figures from the<a href="https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/employmentandemployeetypes/articles/businessandindividualattitudestowardsthefutureofhomeworkinguk/apriltomay2021"> Office of National Statistics</a>, 28% of British businesses were not sure whether they intended to permanently increase homeworking long-term. </p><p>Evidence differs over the extent to which employees want to return to the office after restrictions end. </p><p>In March 2021<a href="https://www.strath.ac.uk/whystrathclyde/news/studyrevealsmostemployeeswanttokeepworkingfromhome/"> preliminary results</a> from a UK-wide survey by Glasgow's University of Strathclyde showed 78% of over 3,000 respondents said they would prefer to be in the office two days or less - 31% didn't want to return at all.  </p><p>It's likely that employees' desires may differ depending on their own personal circumstances and experience during the pandemic. </p>

<p>And the results are kind of magical.</p>
<p>Glasgow architecture students Angus Ritchie and Daniel Tyler <a href="http://www.ross-campbell.co.uk/#0">designed and constructed the cube</a> so it would not disturb the stunning landscape at<span> Trossachs National Park</span>.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>The project was commissioned by the Scottish Scenic Routes Initiative with a $7,000 budget.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">According to <a href="http://www.fastcodesign.com/3031866/invisible-cabin-reflects-scottish-parks-raw-beauty?partner=rss#1">Co.Design</a>, the</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">University of Strathclyde </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">students</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> constructed the cube from birch ply, stainless steel, and hardwood, and uses low-tech mirrors to stay nearly invisible. The lookout includes a platform, open </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">entryway, and bench seating inside, providing for an awesome vantage point.</span></p>

Students Created An 'Invisible' Lookout In A Scottish National Park

In an August YouGov poll, support for the "Yes" vote was 46%, 2 points higher than November levels.</p><p>The slump in support has defied the expectations of many politicians who speculated that a vote for Brexit would spell the end of the UK.</p><p>Some, including ex-PM David Cameron, argued that a Leave vote would cause a surge in support for independence north of the border, where the majority of people voted to remain in the EU.</p><p>Cameron said there was a "<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jun/08/david-cameron-raises-risk-scotland-leaving-uk-after-brexit">deeply patriotic</a>" case for voting to remain in the EU because leaving would strengthen the ruling Scottish National Party's argument that Scotland's interests would be better served out of the union.</p><p>First Minister Nicola Sturgeon <a href="http://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/nicola-sturgeon-brexit-could-lead-to-scottish-independence-1-4303548">is now pushing for a second referendum, on the basis that Brexit will inevitably bolster the "Yes" vote </a>- but polls are moving in the opposite direction. So what's happening?</p><p>Professor John Curtice is one of the country's leading pollsters and a professor of <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> at the University of Strathclyde. He told Business Insider that the number of Scots who aren't fully decided on the independence issue is growing - but importantly, most of them lean towards remaining part of the union. </p><p>"Before the June referendum, around 90% of people said they would vote the same way in a second independence referendum as they did in the first," Curtice said. "That figure is now much closer to 80%."</p><p>That "churn" is moving in both directions and appears to be favouring the "No" side.</p><p>"The problem for the pro-independence side is that somewhere between a quarter and a third of people who voted Yes in September 2014 voted Leave in June 2016," Curtice said.</p><p>"While some people might have switched from No to Yes in the wake of Brexit, as the SNP anticipated, there was also a risk that some people would switch from Yes to No - for them, the prospect of being in a UK outside the EU becomes much more attractive than a Scotland intent on remaining inside the EU," he said.</p><p>In other words, a significant number of Yes <em>and</em> Leave voters are deciding it's more important to be outside the EU than it is to be part of an independent Scotland. The poll shows that 36% of Leave voters said they would vote Yes in August but the latest poll shows that figure has fallen to 29%.</p><p>"Brexit certainly hasn't proven to be advantageous for the "Yes" side," Curtice said. "Sturgeon's apparent assumption was that Brexit would shape the apples off the tree in her direction. A leading pollster told us why Brexit is killing the chances of Scottish independence

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://pictures.reuters.com/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&amp;VBID=2C0FCI5AXNRZ4&amp;SMLS=1&amp;RW=1440&amp;RH=718#/SearchResult&amp;VBID=2C0FCI5AXNRZ4&amp;SMLS=1&amp;RW=1440&amp;RH=718&amp;PN=1&amp;POPUPPN=1&amp;POPUPIID=2C0FQEYR7CF1">REUTERS/Srdjan Zivulovic</a></span></p><p class="caption">The think tank is predicting a wave of migration to Scotland.</p></div><p></p></div></div>A "hard Brexit" could cost Scotland up to 80,000 jobs, reduce GDP by £8 billion, and cut average pay by £2,000 ($2,542) a year, <a href="https://www.sbs.strath.ac.uk/economics/fraser/20161006/Long-term-Economic-Implications-of-Brexit.pdf">according to a new study by a Scottish think tank.</a></p><p>But despite the gloomy outlook, the think tank is predicting a wave of migration into Scotland post-Brexit because the impact will be even worse in the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>.</p><p><a href="https://www.sbs.strath.ac.uk/feeds/news.aspx?id=1057">The Fraser of Allander Institute at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow,</a> modelled the likely impacts of various Brexit scenarios over a 10-year horizon, looking at the Norway model, the Swiss model, and the World Trade Organisation (WTO) model, better known as a "hard Brexit."</p><p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/liam-fox-mp-hard-brexit-hint-article-50-theresa-may-conservative-party-conference-2016-9">A "hard Brexit" is looking increasingly likely,</a> with leading Conservative politicians and the Prime Minister all <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/home-secretary-amber-rudd-speech-2016-10">hardening their rhetoric over recent weeks.</a> The government has been signaling that control over immigration is its top priority in the wake of the June 23 referendum, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/theresa-may-government-signals-no-special-post-brexit-deals-for-financial-services-2016-10">even if that creates pain for the economy.</a></p><p>The most severe scenario is the WTO model, where Britain cuts off all ties from the European Union and simply trades internationally through WTO rule. The Fraser of Allander Institute found that under this model Scottish GDP is expected to be 5% lower, real wages 7% lower, and employment down by 3%.</p><p>But all three of the models result in net loss to GDP, wages, and employment. Member of Scottish Parliament Joan McAlpine writes in the paper's introduction: "Whatever the model that the UK Government settles on, this report paints a grim picture of Scotland's economy ten years after Brexit."</p><p>Despite the seeming doom and gloom for Scotland, the think tank found that the expected impact on GDP for the UK is actually likely to be worse than in Scotland if Britain plumps for a "hard Brexit."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Fraser of Allander Institute at the University of Strathclyde</span></p><p class="caption">The relative impact of various 'hard Brexit' scenarios on Scottish and the rest of the UK GDP</p></div><p></p></div></div>The above chart shows that in whatever "hard Brexit" scenario is considered - simple trade under WTO rules, WTO-trade plus reinvestment of EU savings into the economy, and the WTO-trade and reinvestment plus trading tariffs from other nations - GDP suffers in both Scotland and the UK 10 years out. And in each case, in impact is worse on the rest of the UK than it is in Scotland.</p><p>The report goes so far as to say: "To a degree, this acts to cushion the impacts on the Scottish economy as the shock induces net migration into Scotland from rUK (the rest of the UK)."</p><p>Perhaps the biggest blow to the UK economy could come from the likely loss of passporting rights if Britain plumps for a "hard Brexit." Passporting rights allow finance firms to operate across Europe from offices in the UK. <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/britain-and-the-city-of-london-could-lose-eu-passport-rights-2016-9">5,500 UK companies rely on the rights, with a combined turnover of £9 billion.</a> Collectively, financial services contributes £65 billion to the UK economy.</p><p>Here is a summary of the key impacts from each model the Fraser of Allander Institute looked at. First, the Norway model, where Britain retains membership of the European Economic Area (EEA), keeps access of the European single market, is outside of EU trade deals with the rest of the world, has to contribute to the EU and keeps freedom of movement:</p><ul><li>Scottish GDP expected to be 2-3% lower than would otherwise be the case - equivalent to GDP being £3-5 billion lower in 2015-16 terms;</li><li>Real wages expected to be 3-4% lower than would otherwise be the case; for someone on average full-time earnings in Scotland, this would be equivalent to a reduction of £800-£1,200 per year.</li><li>A 1-2% reduction in employment level, equivalent to the loss of around 30,000 jobs in the optimistic scenario.</li></ul><p>Next up is the Swiss model, where Britain is a member of the European Free Trade Association but not the EEA, has some access to the single market through bilateral agreements, keeps paying into the EU, and keeps freedom of movement:</p><ul><li>GDP expected to be 3-4% lower than would otherwise be the case in the long term (equivalent to £4-6 billion in 2015-16 terms.)</li><li>Real wages expected to be around 5-6% (£1,200-£1,600 per year) lower than would otherwise be the case and exports 6-8% lower;</li><li>Employment projected to fall by 1-2%.</li></ul><p>Finally, the WTO or "hard Brexit" model, where Britain cuts off all ties to the EU and simply trades with member states through WTO rules:</p><ul><li>GDP is expected to be over 5% (£8bn in 2015-16 terms) lower than would otherwise be the case and exports over 11% lower;</li><li>Real wages are expected to be 7% lower, equivalent to a reduction of around £2,000 per year;</li><li>The number of people employed is 3% lower (around 80,000 jobs.)</li></ul><p>The Fraser of Allander Institute used a "Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) framework" to come up with these estimates - a technical economic modelling approach widely used by governments and organisations around the world including the Scottish Government, The UK Treasury, and the World Trade Organisation.</p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/joseph-stiglitz-rates-janet-yellens-performance-fed-chair-qe-wealth-inequality-inflation-hawks-2016-9">Nobel prize-winning economist Stiglitz rates Yellen's performance as Fed chair</a></h3>        <div>            <div>        <div class="ooyala-video-player" data-video-autoplay="false" data-video-id="VucDkxNjE66X74L1OOrOS0f69DVt3jLC" data-player-variable="ooyalapopvideo" id="ooyalaplayer_popvideo" style="width:1280px;height:720px"></div>        </div>        </div>            </div>
