<ul><li>The <keyword id="63618" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Management">Indian Institute of Management</keyword> (IIM), Calcutta, on Thursday, signed two Memorandum of Understanding with <keyword id="663053" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carleton-University">Carleton University</keyword>, Canada and Montpellier Business School, France. </li><li>The move initiated under the Student Exchange Programme (STEP). </li><li>The five-year long pact with Carleton University will foster research programmes and collaborations. </li><li>To make India a ‘hub of higher education, the government will infuse ₹400 crores to build world class institutions in India.</li></ul>The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta signed agreements with two international universities — Carleton University of Canada and Montpellier Business School in France, the university said in a press release. The MoUs will initiate a Student Exchange Programme (STEP) which will focus on boosting teaching, research, and cultural understanding. “STEP is an integral part of <keyword id="78512" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-Calcutta">IIM Calcutta</keyword>’s internationalization efforts. It is aimed at providing IIM Calcutta students an opportunity to have learning experience from international environment,” Professor Prashant Mishra, Dean, New Initiatives and External Relations said. The five-year long agreement with Carleton University will foster research, collaboration, executive training and capacity building with scholarship programmes. “It is the intent of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta to establish precise academic and financial arrangements, and to support, as appropriate, the exchange of personnel between Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and Carleton University,” the university noted. The association between Montpellier Business School and Indian Institute of Management Calcutta will cater to postgraduate and doctoral students, along with teachers and research aspirants. As a part of this, the university will introduce joint executive development programmes, joint research programmes, joint conferences and workshops. “This helps them sharpen their practical skills, equips them with the ability to work in culturally diverse teams and contributes largely to their personal and professional development,” Mishra added. IIM Calcutta to exchange students with universities in France and Canada

In its absence, would humans and other mammals have eventually duked it out with <keyword id="48647" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="T-rex">T. rex</keyword> and triceratops?The answer is probably not, according to <a href="https://nlcontent.springernature.com/d-redirect/TIDP884212X68DDEBD680B546AA9FEC12817DCB8D09YI4/?url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.nature.com%2farticles%2fs41467-021-23754-0&amp;linksource=https%3a%2f%2fnemo-mail-monkey-live.springernature.app%2f15589138%2fpressReleases%2f%5bdossier-id%5d%3feditorialDomain%3dhttps%253A%252F%252Fpress.springernature.com%26publicationDomain%3dhttps%253A%252F%252Fdx.doi.org.org">a study</a> published Tuesday.That research found that six major groups of dinosaurs were slowly going extinct over the 10 million years prior to the crash. The impact's consequences - mile-high tsunamis, raging fires, and a choking cloud of thick dust and sulfur that blotted out the sun - were merely a nail in the dinosaurs' coffin."The meteorite is seen as a coup de grâce for dinosaurs, which finished them off," Fabien Condamine, a research scientist at the University of Montpellier in France who co-authored the new study, told Insider.Condamine and his collaborators suggest that a period of global cooling may have contributed to a decline in the overall number of dinosaur species, which then made it impossible for the animals to recover after the cataclysmic event."Many paleontologists think dinosaurs would have continued to live if the <keyword id="6549794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="asteroid">asteroid</keyword> did not hit Earth. Our study brings new information for this question, and it seems that dinosaurs were not in good shape before the impact," Condamine said.<h2>Dinosaurs were already on their way out</h2><div type="image" title="T. rex" height="3378" width="3000" msid="83972364" hostid="261"></div>The researchers behind the new study looked at 1,600 <keyword id="6377866" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fossils">fossils</keyword> from 247 dinosaur species that lived during the late Cretaceous period - from about 100 million to 66 million years ago. That group includes two-legged carnivores like the T. rex, triceratops, and duck-billed dinosaurs.The team grouped them into six large families, then analyzed how the diversity of species in those families changed over time. The results show that across all six groups, the number of species started to gradually decline 76 million years ago, prior to the space-rock impact. "We do not find that dinosaur diversity was high and diversifying toward the end of the Cretaceous, as previously thought," Condamine said.His isn't the first group of scientists to suggest that dinosaurs actually went extinct gradually. A <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/113/18/5036">2016 study</a> found that as species of dinosaurs that had been around on Earth a while went extinct, no newer species replaced them. Although <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.201195">questions lingered</a> as to whether that conclusion was simply the product of an incomplete fossil record, this new study shows that older species did indeed have higher extinction rates than younger ones.<h2>An herbivore monopoly</h2><div type="image" title="Arctic dinosaur hadrosaur" height="450" width="600" msid="83972366" hostid="261"></div>In the late Cretaceous period, the planet began to cool: Starting 80 million years ago, global temperatures dropped by about 13 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius).Given that dinosaurs relied on the temperature of their environment to regulate their body heat, Condamine said, that change in climate might have played a role in their extinction rates."Warm periods favored dinosaur diversification whereas cooler periods led to enhanced extinctions," the study authors wrote. Another possible explanation for the dinosaurs' decline is a change in the number of herbivore species in the ecosystem. Hadrosaurs, or duck-billed herbivores, seem to have dominated between 76 million and 66 million years ago - out-competing their fellow leaf-eaters like triceratops and the clubbed-tailed, armored ankylosaurs. That contributed to the decline of those other herbivores."Removing herbivores can make the entire ecosystems more prone to extinction cascades," Condamine said.
