Developers like <a href="https://twitter.com/KentInPublic" target="_blank">Kent Hudson.</a> Last month, Hudson released "<a href="http://www.thenovelistgame.com/" target="_blank">The Novelist,</a>" his first game as an indie game designer. Business Insider sat down with Hudson to discuss the game at length. 
"The Novelist" doesn't have the big action set pieces or cinematic cutscenes used to tell stories in most games. Instead, the player drives the story directly through gameplay.
The game puts players in control of a nigh-invisible, "Paranormal Activity"-like entity (see: character above) haunting a house on the coast of Oregon. As the game begins, a novelist and his wife and son move into the home for the summer.
The novelist, Dan Kaplan, is struggling to complete his second book. Meanwhile, his marriage is going through a rough patch and his son is having trouble in school, both socially and with his work. Basically, it's not a good time for the Kaplan family.
Of course, none of this is told to the player outright. Instead, the player has to sneak up on the Kaplans to "uncover memories" via possession and find clues laid around the house. Letters to and from family, diary entries, and the son's crayon drawings slowly reveal what each of the family members are thinking about and what they want in life.

Things get interesting when you know what each character really wants. That's because the player can influence the Kaplans' lives by telling Dan what do to while he sleeps. The only problem: you can't make everyone happy in every situation.
In fact, the game only lets players make one character happy in any given situation. Whether it's giving Dan time to work on his book, taking the Kaplans' son to an amusement park or going for a hike on a trail Dan's wife picked out, the options available to the player are almost all mutually exclusive. 
If you're careful about finding out each character's wants, you can try to find ways to compromise between them. While you still can't make more than one person happy, compromises let you keep one of the others from being unhappy.
That's an important distinction to make. Each character has a "happiness score" based on the player's decisions. Fulfilling a want adds to that score, finding a compromise maintains it, and ignoring a character's wants lowers it.
That score affects the ending of the game. In my play through, I tried to give Dan time to work on his novel but kept worrying about the state of his marriage and the lack of attention his son was getting, so most of my suggestions focused on improving those aspects of his life. 
In the end, his book was a failure (ending his career as an author) but his marriage became stronger than ever and his son grew up to become a famous graphic novelist. 
Apparently, I care about family more than having a successful career. But others will have different priorities, and those priorities can play out through eight different endings that range from everyone being happy to the Kaplans falling into ruin.

After nearly two years in development, the game is receiving <a href="http://www.thenovelistgame.com/" target="_blank">praise from critics</a> and coverage from major gaming publications liking <a href="http://www.polygon.com/2013/12/11/5201512/the-novelist-review-compromise" target="_blank">Polygon</a>, <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/games/the_novelist/b/pc/archive/2013/12/13/the-novelist-review-game-informer.aspx" target="_blank">Game Informer</a>, and <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/the-novelist-review/1900-6415591/" target="_blank">GameSpot</a>.
While Hudson has spent more than a decade as a game designer - with big games like "Bioshock 2" and "Thief: Deadly Shadows" under his belt - making a game by himself still proved to be a challenge.
To make the game, Hudson employed <a href="http://unity3d.com/" target="_blank">Unity</a>, a game engine favored by a number of independent game developers for its ease of use and incredibly active and helpful community. He isn't a programmer, so to put together the game's logic he used <a href="http://www.detoxstudios.com/" target="_blank">uScript</a>, an add-on for Unity that lets game developers connect bits of logic visually rather than using thousands of lines of code.
According to Hudson, it took him about a week to become familiar with Unity. That's lucky, because figuring out what he was going to make in the first place took months.
When he first left his job at 2K Games after becoming fed-up with the avoidance of experimentation in traditional studio-based game development, Hudson thought he was going to start his indie career by making a simple game for the iPad. After a few false starts, he decided to tackle to problem of giving players "agency" in the stories they play through in <keyword id="25195" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="video-games">video games</keyword>.
Tired of games where the story happens around the player in cutscenes <a href="http://youtu.be/fK4OvaTWFTE?t=4m55s" target="_blank">instead of being driven</a> by their decisions during gameplay, Hudson came up with a concept a lot like "The Novelist" but with eight characters, each fitting a distinct stereotype - novelist, painter, old millionaire, etc. But that proved to be far too complex to tackle by himself.
"There would have been far too many permutations of the story to keep track of during writing," Hudson told me over coffee. "And with that many characters, it's hard to make the player care about the wants of any individual."
So he stripped it down to a far simpler group: the nuclear family, by many standards the building block of social interaction and community.
"That made the system behind the gameplay much easier to work with, because with only three characters it became a balanced equation: one character would be happy in any given situation, one character could remain neutral, and one character would become unhappy."
Many of the struggles faced by the game's titular character are reflections of Hudson's own problems and anxieties. After all, there isn't a huge gap between what goes into writing a book and writing the story for a game. In fact, at one point the player finds a bunch of inspirational and self-deprecating post-it notes in front of Dan's typewriter - Hudson says that those are actual notes he had at his desk that he wrote into the game when he was struck with a bout of writer's block.
Of course, not every scenario is inspired by Hudson's life. For instance, he's not a father. To create a realistic-feeling family dynamic, he surveyed friends who are parents and spoke to their kids about what it's like to be a parent and a six-year-old kid.
The result is a game that truly captures the emotional ups and downs of finding balance in one's life, whether it's between work and family or even between one's spouse and one's child.
While it's not heavy on action - the primary game mode requires the player to find creative ways to keep out of the Kaplans' sight, though there's also a mode that lets non-gamers simply wander about the house freely to experience the story without worrying about hiding - the game offers satisfaction by showing that their decisions really matter, just as in real life.
For the price of a trip to the movies - <a href="http://www.thenovelistgame.com/" target="_blank">$14.99 on Hudson's site</a>, available on PC and Mac - "The Novelist" provides 2-4 hours of gameplay per playthrough. While I'm not sure if I'm going to go through it again any time soon (simply because the choices I made were all gut reactions, making the story feel like my own), completionists will enjoy playing through the game to see the different endings.
Bottom line: For gamers who enjoy piecing together an emotional story, "The Novelist" is one of 2013's must-buys.

 Right now, users can only play the single player version of the game but there are plans to launch a multiplayer version soon. The mobile game was developed by Threye Military Games in collaboration with IAF, using Unity 3D's Cinemachine. It is available for download in both Android and iOS play stores. The game also has an option for users to apply and appear for recruitment into the IAF from within the app itself. This isn't the only game that the IAF has launched in the country to get more of the youth to engage with aerial operations of the Indian Armed Forces.

So far, the game has over a million downloads in the Google Play Store, with a rating of 4.4 stars. First impressions When you first log into this new game, it kicks off with a tutorial on the basics of flying a plane. The graphics aren't phenomenal, but for a flight simulator the navigation works well.

 You start off by getting the plane off the tarmac. Once you're in the air, you can adjust your flight height by pivoting the smartphone upwards or downwards. Moving the phone to one side or the other changes the direction in which the plane is flying.

 If you only want to look around and not actually move, you can use your finger to swipe across the screen and check your surroundings. There are three different camera modes to choose from, as you play the game.

 After you've learnt to navigate, the game takes you into armament training where you learn to use your plan's gun system to take down enemy combatants in air. As a player, you have to navigate as you shoot down other aircraft, using the toggle on the right.

 The final part of the game is knowing how to land a plane. And once you know the three main components, you can start on the 10 single player missions that the game has available — including natural disaster event, surgical strike, base defence and futuristic weapons.

The Indian Air Force launched a 3D mobile game to give aspirants a taste of the action

It may arrive sooner than expected, however, thanks to one enterprising programmer. 28-year-old developer <a href="http://shek.it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Abhishek Singh</a> has recreated the entire first level from Nintendo's "Super Mario Bros." for Microsoft HoloLens using Unity3D. The coder, a graduate from NYU's Tisch school, took his creation to Central Park in New York City to demonstrate how it works. Clad in a homemade Mario costume, Singh recorded himself walking down a pathway in the park, jumping on any Goombas and Koopa Troopas that crossed his path. The life-sized game even features the Fire Flower, which allowed Singh to launch fireballs by gesturing with his hands where he wanted them to go. We'll talk about why <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> is having this moment shortly, but first, here are some of the other notable takeaways from the IPO stampede: <ul><li>Old Timers: The youngest of the companies planning to go public — <keyword id="1711444" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Snowflake">Snowflake</keyword> — is eight years old. <keyword id="190609" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="asana">Asana</keyword> and Jfrog were each founded in 2008, making them veritable geezers in the tech IPO world, where the <a href="https://site.warrington.ufl.edu/ritter/files/2020/02/IPOs2019Age.pdf">median age of an IPO company is seven years</a>. (And if<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/palantir-said-to-ready-s1-filing-as-soon-as-monday-2020-8"> Palantir's S-1 drops this week, as expected</a>, the average age of this batch will skew even older, given that Palantir was founded way back in 2003!)</li><li>Red ink: An average 10.5-year-old human is able to read chapter books, control fine motor skills, and is losing the last of their baby teeth. For these soon-to-be-public companies of the same average age, the only consistent trait seems to be a propensity for losing money. None of the companies that filed S-1s are profitable; Three of the companies — Asana, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jfrog-devops-board-members-possible-ipo-2020-4">Jfrog</a> and Unity — have never posted an annual profit in all their years of existence. And in the cases of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/asana-productivity-filed-s1-to-go-public-via-direct-listing-2020-8">Asana</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snowflake-cloud-spending-amazon-web-services-microsoft-google-2020-8">Snowflake</a>, the losses are growing.</li><li>Direct Listings make an appearance: Four of the five companies are doing the old-fashioned IPO. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-difference-between-a-direct-listing-and-an-ipo-2019-6">Only Asana is opting to go public through a direct listing</a>. That may seem like a poor showing for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/slack-direct-listing-process-likely-wont-be-copied-widely-2019-6">the much-hyped direct listing approach,</a> until you consider that there have only ever been two other tech direct listings (Spotify and Slack, in 2018 and 2019, respectively). </li><li>VC scorecard: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snowflake-ipo-investors-venture-capital-execs-2020-8">Sequoia Capital has significant stakes in 2 of the 5 companies</a> (Snowlake and Unity) and Sapphire Ventures has roughly 9% stakes in Jfrog and Sumo. Other VC and PE firms with sizeable stakes in the various companies include Benchmark, Accel, Founders Fund, and Silver Lake Partners.</li></ul><h2>So why are all the IPOs in <keyword id="3024128" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="enterprise-tech">Enterprise Tech</keyword> anyway?</h2>We talked to Business Insider Deputy Editor Matt Weinberger, who oversees the enterprise tech desk.<h4>Five of the S1 filings yesterday were enterprise tech companies. Is this a sign that consumer tech doesn't have any successful startups, or is there something special about enterprise tech right now?</h4>Matt: There's a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/satya-nadella-empathy-cloud-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-6">recent quote from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella that keeps getting passed around</a>: "We have seen two years' worth of digital transformation in two months." Which is to say, every company everywhere is suddenly under pressure to modernize their IT infrastructure — retailers are leaning harder on e-commerce than ever before, doctors need ways to consult patients remotely, and corporations need to make sure that newly-remote employees can access all their apps and data from wherever they are. (Or, as an <a href="https://twitter.com/AzzaIsmaili/status/1263705606340386818?s=20">oft-repeated joke on Twitter goes</a>: Who's driving your digital transformation? The CEO, the CIO, or COVID-19?) This means that it's the right time for enterprise- and developer-focused startups to shine. Snowflake, for example, helps companies store their cloud data in a way that makes it easier to analyze. Asana is a project management tool that's risen to prominence in the WFH world. JFrog is a popular tool to help developers deliver more code, more quickly, while Sumo Logic helps IT departments analyze their data. Even Unity, which makes software to help developers build games that can be more easily brought from PC to console to smartphone and back, is likely benefiting from how much more people are playing video games now that they're largely stuck at home.All of which is a long way of saying that a lot of these companies seem to be in the right place at the right time.<div type="image" title="Apex Legends" height="1080" width="1920" msid="77750804" hostid="261"></div><h4>But wait, none of these companies are profitable. I thought enterprise tech was supposed to be the part of the tech industry that actually makes money? </h4>Matt: Yeah, that's the other thing. For companies like Snowflake, the lack of profitability makes a certain degree of sense: Like Uber, Dropbox, and even Facebook before it, Snowflake is in growth mode, meaning that it's spending a lot of money to develop its product and acquire customers now so it can be even bigger later. Asana and Unity, however, are a little older than Snowflake, and show fewer signs of that hypergrowth — though they do both show year-over-year revenue growth. It's hard to know what exactly to make of that, but it's not clear when or if either will reach profitability. Anyway, when was the last time that profitability was a prerequisite for an IPO? (No, I'm seriously asking. I can't remember the last time a major tech company was profitable at the time it listed. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atlassian-files-for-ipo-2015-11">Maybe Atlassian in 2015?</a>) <h4>Sumo Logic, one of the companies going public, has a customer case study in its S1 about Jfrog, another company going public. Is there an interdependence risk here, in which a slowdown at one company starts a chain reaction that takes other companies down too?</h4>Matt: It's hard to say, honestly. There are always a few caveats when developer-focused startups talk about customers: JFrog, Sumo Logic, and pretty much every other startup of their ilk offer a free tier of service, or at least a free trial. This is a key part of the sales strategy — it means that they can spread by word of mouth, as developers who like a service can get their friends and colleagues to sign up, as well, eventually pushing a company into ponying up for a paid account with more features.This approach, however, means that when companies like JFrog boast about having Microsoft, Amazon, or Netflix as customers, it's hard to know what that means. Is it just one team or division running the software? Or is it the whole company? It's not always clear, except in rare cases where a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twilio-calls-its-28-million-revenue-pie-from-whatsapp-just-gravy-2016-6">single customer accounts for so much revenue that they have to disclose</a> it to investors.The other piece is that a lot of customers, particularly the largest ones, don't always like speaking in depth about which technologies they use, or to what extent. The result is that a lot of the attention then falls on relatively smaller customers — like we see with Sumo Logic and JFrog — who are more willing to dive deep on how exactly they're using the product. The Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) division is hiring a bunch of gaming experts to work on a new social smartphone game, according to recent job postings. The process appears to be in the early stages as ATAP is looking for a creative director as well as lead backend and mobile games engineers to "propose, design, and implement services to help manage large amounts of user data for multiplayer gaming."Google doesn't specify the game's title or premise, but says in one listing that it needs a creative director, familiar with the Unity3D game development tool, who will be "responsible for all aspect's of the game's design," including generating "concepts, storyboards, sketches, design documents, and other artifacts as needed to communicate the design vision" and working with the product manager to design all game mechanics.The ATAP division prides itself on moving quickly (and killing projects liberally), so no there's no guarantee that this game will see the light of day. But for now, ATAP is billing the endeavor to hopefuls as creating "the future of mobile entertainment" and wants developers with 8+ years of experience to build a "cross-platform, shared server development framework" to support "large social engagement through shared gameplay." ATAP itself saw a big change earlier this year when <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/regina-dugan-moves-from-google-to-facebook-2016-4">Facebook poached its leader, Regina Dugan</a>. Dan Kaufman, who, like Dugan, <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/tech/darpas-dan-kaufman-how-the-governments-willy-116321104484.html">worked at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency</a> before coming to Google, took over in her wake. <h2>'Game dev at Google?'</h2>Gaming isn't an area Google has generally cared about in the past, but it may be smarting from the spin-off of Niantic Labs, which created the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/pokemon-go-niantic-john-hanke-interview-2016-7">hugely popular mobile game Pokémon Go.</a> Niantic launched within Google back in 2010 and created a game based on Google mapping data called Ingress, but Niantic split off in late 2015 after the company's Alphabet reorganization. Less than a year later, Niantic's first non-Google affiliated game, Pokémon Go, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/data-shows-pokemon-go-is-not-a-fad-2016-8">went ballistic. </a><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Reuters/Mark Kauzlarich</div></div></div>Interestingly, job postings for ATAP's new game don't mention augmented reality (Pokémon Go is considered one of the first widely popular AR games) or working with Tango, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lenovo-phab2-pro-project-tango-phone-google-2016-6?op=0">Google's 3D mapping tool</a> meant to give any phone AR capabilities, which originally launched in ATAP.Outside of Ingress, Google hasn't otherwise created any break-out standalone games, and has instead focused on making platforms like Android, Chrome, and more recently, the Daydream virtual reality OS, for other developers to create their own games on.As one ATAP software engineer puts it on his LinkedIn page:"Game dev at Google? Who would have thought this existed? It does, and that's what I'm doing."Meanwhile, ATAP's other known projects include Jacquard, which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-project-jacquard-partners-with-cintas-2016-6">makes smart fabric</a>, Soli, which <a href="https://atap.google.com/soli/">uses radar for touchless gesture control</a>, and Spotlight Stories, which creates short VR films. Ara, its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-project-ara-update-2016-5">modular phone concept,</a> and the aforementioned Tango recently "graduated" from the lab. But what's just as crucial is making sure the skills you do have are in demand.
IT recruiting firm <a href="http://www.mondo.com/">Mondo</a> combed through its database to track down the most valuable skills and positions in tech. There are a few noteworthy changes from last year's data, Mondo says, such as a greater interest in designers for augmented reality platforms.
Salaries across the IT industry have also risen by about 10 percent on average, according to Mondo's Regional Director of Recruiting Tom Cirri. At the same time, Cirri notes that hires are expected to offer more skills. For example, a database developer might have earned less in 2013, but is now expected to have experience with more types of database providers.
Here's a breakdown of the most valuable skills in the industry broken down by average annual salary, from lowest to highest.
